[001] - 4tH compiler 3.4e-pre9 (Development)
  by HanSoft (http://freshmeat.net/users/hansoft/)
  Mon, Nov 15th 2004 04:02

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries

About: 4tH is a Forth compiler with a little difference. Instead of the
standard Forth engine it features a conventional compiler. 4tH is a very
small compiler that can create bytecode, C-embeddable bytecode, standalone
executables, but also works fine as a scripting language. It supports over
85% of the ANS Forth CORE wordset and features conditional compilation,
pipes, files, assertions, forward declarations, recursion, include files,
etc. It comes with an RPN calculator, line editor, compiler, decompiler,
C-source generators, and a virtual machine.

Changes: The compiler has been optimized for both size and speed. Some
programs and library members were rewritten.

  Mon, Nov 15th 2004 20:03

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games

About: 5ball is similar to klines, but bigger (and meant for at least
1024x768 screen res.). It includes many options such as different board
size, number of different colors, undo, different themes, etc. The object
is to make a line of 5 like- color balls which will eliminate them from the
grid. Score as much as you can before the grid fills. 3 new balls are
placed randomly on the grid each time you move without making a line.

Changes: A matching theme for a screen resolution of 800x600 was added.
Older themes with "animation" were removed. Code related to "animation"
was removed. The documentation was updated.

  Mon, Nov 15th 2004 12:28

Education
Software Development :: Documentation
System :: Systems Administration

About: The Advanced Bash Scripting Guide is both a reference and a
tutorial on shell scripting. This comprehensive book (the equivalent of
about 612 print pages) covers almost every aspect of shell scripting. It
contains 300 profusely commented illustrative examples (including such
goodies as an anti-spammer script), and a number of tables. Not just a
shell scripting tutorial, this book also provides an introduction to basic
programming techniques, such as sorting and recursion. It is well suited
for either individual study or classroom use.

Changes: Many small corrections and bugfixes were made throughout the
book. Much new material was added, including a couple of new example
scripts. More info on new features of Bash 3 was added. The "Localization"
appendix was heavily edited.

About: aspell-da is an aspell dictionary for spell-checking Danish texts.
It is based on "Den store danske ordliste" (The Comprehensive Danish
Dictionary).

Changes: This release adds some words and removes some misspellings. This
is a special release to compensate for strange behaviour in
OpenOffice.org/Myspell. OpenOffice.org requires that all the words that
make up a compound word carry the compound word flag. This means that
practically all the words should carry the compound word flag, and not
only the words that are valid as the first half of a compound word. Now

[027] - DSPAM 3.2.2
  by Nuclear Elephant (http://freshmeat.net/users/jzdziarski/)
  Mon, Nov 15th 2004 06:27

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Internet
Text Processing :: Filters

About: DSPAM is a server-side statistical anti-spam agent for Unix email
servers. It masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and
effectively filters spam using a combination of de-obfuscation techniques,
specialized algorithms, and statistical analysis. The result is an
administratively maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam tool. DSPAM has
yielded real-world success rates beyond 99.9% accuracy with less than a
0.01% chance of false positives.

Changes: The following bugs have been fixed: signature encoding can cause
segfault in sqlite_drv; signature scan segfaults when scanning some
messages; tokens from lines 2+ of multi-line headers are ignored;
chi-square cutoff is identical to default token value; source address
tracking is disabled by legacy #ifdef's; using SignatureLocation=headers
no longer works with forwarded attachments; dspam.conf default permissions
are executable; LocalMX tag doesn't work in dspam.conf; source address
tracking doesn't work with TOE; optOut preference does not work.

  by Andrew Mihal (http://freshmeat.net/users/mihal/)
  Mon, Nov 15th 2004 01:53

Multimedia :: Graphics

About: Enblend is a postprocessing tool for creating panoramic images.
After you align image features using a program like Hugin, there are often
photometric problems that lead to ugly seams in the final composite.
Enblend blends away these seams using a multiresolution spline. This
technique gives good results on both low spatial frequency objects (sky
and clouds) and high spatial frequency objects (trees and houses).

Changes: This release fixes several issues since the last release,
including primary-colored spot artifacts, unwanted interactive TIFF
warnings, and problems with very large panoramas.

Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: libkdtree++ is a C++ template container implementation of
k-dimensional space sorting, using a kd-tree. It sports a theoretically
unlimited number of dimensions, and can store any data structure. Provided
the data structure, it provides operator[0 - k-1] to access the individual
dimensional components (arrays, std::vector already do) and a std::less
implementation for the type of dimensional components. It has support for
custom allocators, implements iterators, and provides standard find as
well as range queries. It has amortised O(lg n) time (O(n lg n) worst
case) on most operations (insert/erase/find optimised) and worst-case O(n)
space, and also provides a means to rebalance and thus optimise the tree.

About: Moodle is a learning management system for producing Internet-based
course Web sites. It is written in PHP and is easy to install and use on
Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, SunOS, BSD, and Netware 6. It has been designed
to support modern pedagogies based on social constructionist theory, and
includes activity modules such as forums, chats, resources, journals,
quizzes, surveys, choices, workshops, glossaries, lessons, and
assignments. It has been translated into over 40 languages, with more on
the way, and supports the popular SCORM standard for content packaging.
Moodle offers a free alternative to commercial software such as WebCT or
Blackboard, and is being used by a growing number of universities,
schools, and independent teachers for distance education or to supplement
face-to-face teaching.

Changes: A number of bugs were fixed in this version, including some
potentially serious security issues. Email generated by the system now
threads nicely in mail clients, and a new PAM module was added for
authentication. All sites using older versions are advised to upgrade.

  by Adam Bernstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/numbr6/)
  Mon, Nov 15th 2004 10:04

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Editors

About: mpgedit is an MPEG 1 layer 1/2/3 (MP3), MPEG 2, and MPEG 2.5 audio
file editor that is capable of processing both Constant Bit Rate (CBR) and
Variable Bit Rate (VBR) encoded files. mpgedit can cut an input MPEG file
into one or more output files, as well as join one or more input MPEG
files into a single output file. Since no decoding or encoding occurs
during editing, there is no audio quality loss when editing with mpgedit.
mpgedit features command line, curses-based, and graphical interfaces. The
curses and graphical versions feature an interactive playback mode for fast
selection and verification of edit begin and end times.

Changes: This release fixes several serious buffer overrun errors and NULL
pointer use problems responsible for frequent crashes of xmpgedit when
editing MP3 files encoded at very low bit rates (less than 96kbps), or
MPEG2/MPEG2.5 encoded files with the PCM file viewer open. User interface
responsiveness has been improved when stopping audio playback of
MPEG2/MPEG2.5 encoded files in xmpgedit and mpgedit running in interactive
curses mode.

[093] - Smart Statistics 2.1
  by Adamus Capuano (http://freshmeat.net/users/AdamusCapuano/)
  Mon, Nov 15th 2004 16:31

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Page Counters

About: Smart Statistics is a PHP script that installs on your site and
provides human readable statistics for a Web site. This script is very
different than regular statistics and logging scripts, both in purpose and
in scale. Most statistics scripts and log analyzers offer a huge amount of
information, but one rarely can find some relevant information in what
they provide, so that one can use it in order to improve their site.
Instead of complex statistics, Smart Statistics looks at the site the same
way a person might look: by pages or sections.

Changes: This release adds page visits evolution by period: days, months,
and years. A cleanup function has been added.

[100] - System Garden Habitat 0.99.0
  by Nigel Stuckey (http://freshmeat.net/users/Stuckey/)
  Mon, Nov 15th 2004 11:31

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: Habitat is a performance management system which captures, stores,
and visualises table-based time series data. Monitor probes exist for
Linux and Solaris with Windows coming soon. It has a command line
interface, a fast GUI client for graphical visualisation, and a simple
format for extending data capture in the agent. It is written in C with
Gtk and can access data from its peers directly, by file sharing, or with
the use of a separate central archiving repository (harvest) to scale to
installations of significant size.

Changes: The Beta program has started. Peer to peer direct machine
connections were implemented. Most local storage methods were deprecated
and replaced with a new unified, modular system (ringstore). Many
components were reimplemented for efficiency and consistency. Improvements
were made to the GUI with new icons, more logical layout, and CSV reading.
A full complement of manpages was written.

[101] - The Comprehensive Danish Dictionary 1.4.45
  by Jacob Sparre Andersen (http://freshmeat.net/users/sparre/)
  Mon, Nov 15th 2004 16:30

About: The Comprehensive Danish Dictionary is a word list for spell
checking of Danish texts.

Now
(practically) only the letters of the alphabet do not carry the compound
word flag.

[102] - The Hoard Scalable Memory Allocator 3.1
  by Emery Berger (http://freshmeat.net/users/emeryberger/)
  Mon, Nov 15th 2004 10:08

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Operating System
Utilities

About: Hoard is a scalable memory allocator (malloc replacement) for
multithreaded applications. Hoard can dramatically improve your
application's performance on multiprocessor machines. No changes to your
source are necessary; just link it in. Hoard scales linearly up to at
least 14 processors. The supported platforms include Linux, Solaris, and
Windows NT/2000/XP.

Changes: Several performance optimizations and a minor bugfix for
non-Windows platforms (the bug is obscure and rare, but updating to this
version is recommended if you are using the 3.x series). This release
compiles cleanly for the SunWorks C compiler, which produces surprisingly
bad code for Hoard (it does not handle templates well), GNU C is strongly
recommended for Solaris platforms. Performance improvements are
substantial, even for single-threaded code.
