[001] - AKFQuiz 3.0.1
  by Andreas K. Foerster (http://freshmeat.net/users/AKFoerster/)
  Thu, Nov 18th 2004 10:47

Education

About: The AKFQuiz package lets you easily make your own quiz games or
learning exercises. These can be used either with crtquiz on the text
console or with diaquiz in a GUI environment. A CGI-variant can be
installed on a Web server to offer exercises via the Web. Or you can use
mkquiz, which generates an HTML file for to use with the JavaScript
akfquiz2.js. Those can then be published with any Web-space provider.

Changes: Bugfixes, improved handling of HTML code in input files, features
for psycho test, improved usability, and packages for Windows and FreeDOS
(both just partly supported).

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents

About: Animail is a multiserver POP3/APOP/IMAP4 (with or without SSL) mail
retrieval utility. It features an advanced filtering system based on
blacklisting, whitelisting, or a combination of both. It is possible to
send an autoresponse which prompts people to reply and add themselves to
the 'autoaccept' file. It also allows filters based on regular expressions
which match against the email headers. (If a message is filtered, only the
header is downloaded, not the entire body.) Combining external filtering
programs (e.g. SpamAssassin or Bogofilter) as message post-download
plugins is also easily acomplished, thus extending filtering capabilities
in an unlimited way. Available delivery options include mailbox, maildir,
local SMTP, and pipe to a command.

Changes: When using kdialog to notify of new messages, this release won't
notify when there are no new messages. Also, it won't try to reconnect to
delete downloaded messages (after a network error) if no messages were
downloaded.

  Thu, Nov 18th 2004 02:51

Communications :: Chat
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Message Boards

About: AudienceConnect is a revenue-generating Python CGI solution for
independent content providers. Requests for dynamic content are routed
through PayPal. Previews of that content are generated as static HTML for
search engines to harvest. Self-publishers can upload and publish
remotely, or the editorial CGI can be used to view and publish
submissions. Demo site content is plain text, but AudienceConnect can be
extended to deliver any digital content: sound files, image files, etc.
Installation is very simple; no database technologies are used. The
related modules are completely independent and require only access to
Python 1.5.2 in your cgi-bin.

Changes: SeguinCGIToolkit contains the current AudienceConnect Python CGI
templates as well as a generally useful version of its common library and
constants file.

[011] - CyberNeko HTML Parser 0.9.4
  by Andy Clark (http://freshmeat.net/users/andyc2/)
  Thu, Nov 18th 2004 02:24

Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: NekoHTML is a simple HTML scanner and tag balancer that enables
Java application programmers to parse HTML documents and access the
information using standard XML interfaces. The parser can scan HTML files
and "fix up" many common mistakes that human (and computer) authors make
in writing HTML documents. NekoHTML is written using the Xerces Native
Interface (XNI) that is the foundation of the Xerces2 implementation. This
enables application programmers to use the NekoHTML parser with existing
XNI tools without modification or rewriting code.

Changes: This release added features for stripping CDATA delimiters from
script and style tags, made augmentations, bugfixes, and performance
enhancements, and fixed some tag balancing issues.

[013] - Diplojuge 2beta-1
  by greg (http://freshmeat.net/users/platipus/)
  Thu, Nov 18th 2004 23:09

Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy

About: Diplojuge is a toolkit that can automate all of the actions of a
judge in the Diplomacy game. Contrary to certain existing programs, the
tools are simple and usable on the command line. The most important
software is the adjucator. It reads the map, the positions of the pawns
and centers, and the orders, and it prints the outcomes on standard
output. This can make it possible to easily solve the orders on standard
and electronic Diplomacy games. There are also tools to draw maps with
resulting positions and to allot countries to players.

Changes: This version fixes a bug in the pion.can_support method (which
has been mostly rewritten). It adds adjustment support, messages
translation for orders, retreats, and adjustments, and an English
translation. It also fixes a bug in is_accessible that prevented the
advanced map from working.

[014] - EditiX 2.1

  Thu, Nov 18th 2004 11:11

Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)
Text Processing :: Markup :: DocBook
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML

About: EditiX is a cross-platform and multi-purpose XML/XSLT editor, which
helps Web authors and programmers use XML and XML-related technologies,
such as XSLT, FO, and XSD schemas. It provides a lot of functionality
within a refined IDE, which guides the user with intelligent entry
helpers, and has real-time XPath location and syntax error detection. It
allows the user to apply an XSLT or FO transformation, and shows the
result in a separate view. It includes default templates for XML, DTD,
XHTML, XSLT, XSD, XML RelaxNG, SVG, MathML, and XML FO.

Changes: This release includes a powerful content assistant for DTD and
Relax NG (working with cardinality and ordered and non-ordered lists). The
error line is shown when validating by Relax NG. Also, a schema can be
generated by a document. The parsing error message is maximized inside the
status bar. The XSLT editor, XML data source, or XSLT result can be
maximized inside a docking environment. There's HTML 4 output preview for
XSLT usage, and much more.

[015] - Emergence 0.9
  by Jonathan Brown (http://freshmeat.net/users/jbrown9000/)
  Thu, Nov 18th 2004 02:29

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: Emergence is a network arcade game that can be played over a LAN
for free, or over the Internet if a key is purchased. Each player controls
a spacecraft that can rotate, thrust in the direction it is currently
facing, and slow down. The maps consist largely of walls that damage a
craft's shield. Each craft has a railgun mounted on its underside, and
more ammo and other weapons can be picked up. Maps can also contain
teleporters, gravity wells, speedup ramps, friction areas, doors, and
switches.

Changes: Server discovery was implemented, performance was improved, and
the sound effect volume now attenuates with the distance from the source.
Speedup ramps are now rate limited to 1 Hz. Attached weapons no longer
trigger speedup ramps. Bullet teleportation was disabled. Server
daemonizing was fixed, and the server now accepts arguments for script
execution, map loading, and the maximum number of players. Attached
weapons now work properly in demo startup. F1 can now be pressed to bring
up control help.

[016] - FnFX 0.3
  by Timo Hoenig (http://freshmeat.net/users/thoenig/)
  Thu, Nov 18th 2004 11:29

Utilities

About: FnFX enables owners of Toshiba laptops to change the LCD
brightness, control the internal fan and use the special keys on their
keyboard (Fn-x combinations, hot-keys) under Linux. The internal
functions will give the possibility to map the Fn-Keys to functions like
volume up/down, mute, suspend to disk, suspend to ram and switch
LCD/CRT/TV-out. These functions heavily depend on the system and/or kernel
configuration. You will need at least a kernel (v2.4.x, v2.5.x, v2.6.x)
with ACPI and Toshiba support. See documentation for details.

Changes: Polling of the ACPI interface is now more efficient. The default
brightness can be set at the startup of fnfxd. New internal commands:
toggle Bluetooth and toggle CPU. Some minor fixes and documentation
updates.

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: Nail is a mail user agent derived from Berkeley Mail. It provides
the functionality of the System V and POSIX mailx commands. Additional
features include support for MIME, IMAP (including caching and
disconnected use), POP3, SMTP, S/MIME, international character sets,
maildir folders, message threading, powerful search methods, scoring, and
a Bayesian junk mail filter. Nail can be used as a mail batch language in
nearly the same way as it is used interactively. It can thus act as a
mailbox filter, can fetch mail from remote accounts, and can send files as
attachments.

Changes: When the 'write' command was used to save an attachment, the
output file was not properly closed since version 11.14. Since writes are
buffered, the data was not complete until nail was quit. This release also
fixes issues with the encoding and decoding of MIME header fields, the
pipe-type/subtype mechanism, an S/MIME verification problem that occurred
in conjunction with IMAP or POP3, writing to /dev/null on Solaris, and
inhibits the creation of Message-IDs if an incomplete From address is

[054] - OSSP uuid 1.1.1
  by Ralf S. Engelschall (http://freshmeat.net/users/rse/)
  Thu, Nov 18th 2004 10:54

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Operating System

About: OSSP uuid is an ISO-C and Perl API and corresponding CLI for the
generation of DCE 1.1 and ISO/IEC 11578:1996 compliant Universally Unique
Identifiers (UUIDs). It supports DCE 1.1 variant UUIDs of version 1 (time
and node based), version 3 (name based), and version 4 (random number
based). UUIDs are 128 bit numbers which are intended to have a high
likelihood of uniqueness over space and time and are computationally
difficult to guess. They are globally unique identifiers which can be
locally generated without contacting a global registration authority.

Changes: The FreeBSD libc uuid_create(3) related workaround has been
applied to the Perl bindings under FreeBSD 6.0-CURRENT. Processing of the
Autoconf option --with-perl has been added in case no Perl is available at
all.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: PhpPeanuts is an OOP framework for developing Web-based business
applications in PHP. It dynamically generates a fully functional Web-based
user interface from application domain objects. This allows developers to
get early customer feedback to clarify specifications and reduce project
risk. It is based on a business component model with framework-based
persistency, and offers high-level user interface components for
searching, sorting, dialogs, and tabs. It features ultra rapid
prototyping, automatic form generation and validation, unit testing, and
extensive customization support.

Changes: HorizontalTablePart was added, which shows one peanut per column
instead of per row. Polymorphic persistence and support for Global Filters
by SearchPage were added. Null values can now be stored for number, date,
time, and timestamp datatypes. The E_NOTICE which was triggered from the
framework was eliminated.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Editors
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: Quod Libet is an audio player that lets you use all features
available in the ID3 and Ogg Vorbis tagging standards. It supports
arbitrary tag names and multiple values per tag, and is aware of the more
obscure tags such as 'version', 'conductor', or 'discnumber'. Playlists
are constructed by searching your audio library's tags, either by a text
search or a simple regular expression-based query syntax. It also supports
editing tags, including editing many files at once even if they are
different audio formats.

Changes: A new ALSA backend (using libao/pyao) is available and is the
default audio backend. Many new tag editing options were added, such as
tag-by-filename or rename-by-tag, as well as a context menu for common
tagging operations. VorbisGain tags are understood and honored. Album
covers can be loaded from ID3 APIC tags. Several bugs leading to library

[072] - Simplebackup 1.4.1 (Stable)
  by Miguel Angelo (http://freshmeat.net/users/miguelangelo/)
  Thu, Nov 18th 2004 19:58

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Simplebackup builds simple backups of directories. It reads a
configuration file, one per backup directory, then builds a compressed
file from the directory and places it in another location. The target
location can be a network-mapped drive in Windows, an NFS-mounted drive in
Unix, another hard disk, a tape drive (Unix only), or an FTP server.

Changes: This version fixes a bug that could cause a simplebackup crash
during the FTP backup if the FTP server blocks the connection right
before the backup file upload. This was corrected in the function
sum_all_backups(). Several small problems in FTP backups that could occur
if simplebackup was running under the Windows operating system were
fixed. Now the message that reports "Disconnecting from FTP server" will
only appear if it actually managed to connect in the first place.

  Thu, Nov 18th 2004 13:53

Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

About: Walker is a Python script that updates entire Web sites. It matches

added locally. The default deletion of files and directories can be
overridden on the command line. Walker allows you to update your entire
site by going online and then running one command in a terminal. It also

About: XINS is a technology used to define, create, and invoke remote
APIs. XINS is specification-oriented. When API specifications are written
(in XML), XINS will transform them to HTML-based documentation and Java
code for both the client-side and the server-side. The communication is
based on HTTP. XINS competes with the complex SOAP technology. Main design
goals include simplicity, scalability, and testability. XINS is not only a
specification technology, but also an application development framework.
It offers transaction logging, unique log documentation, and active code
generation.

Changes: This release adds French log messages, adds unit tests, updates
some libraries, adds initial support for XML Namespaces, and improves the
performance of the XINS call result parser.

Security

About: Yet Another antiVirus Recipe is a procmail that helps to filter
out a lot of the most common e-mail worms. It detects worms with base-64
signatures (such as Klez, Hybris, and BugBear), HTML IFRAME exploits,
CLSID hidden extension exploits, -XML code base exploits, executable
extensions (bat, pif, vbs, vba, scr, lnk, com, and exe), and macros for
doc, dot, xls, and xla files. It also detects most Nigerian scam
e-mails.

Changes: Several new signatures were added for Bagle.zip, Bagle.cpl,
NetSky.AD, NetSky.L, NetSky.Q, and Blackmal.C. NetSky.L (Moodown) is a
variable virus and the procmail trap is still on trial.

About: ZIG is a portable, game-oriented client-server networking and
execution framework written in C++. It can be used together with other
engines or libraries that supply graphics, game physics, etc. in order to
implement a full multiplayer game engine. Its goal is to provide an
easy-to-use yet powerful game networking engine so that game developers
won't feel the need to write networking engines from scratch using
low-level APIs such as sockets.

Changes: This release introduces minor API changes. There are 20 bugfixes
and feature enhancements, including fixes for memory leaks and internal
enhancements to allow the handling of large reliable messages (up to
32Kb) and UDP packets (up to 64Kb).
