[001] - AFD 1.2.21
by Holger Kiehl (http://freshmeat.net/users/hkiehl/)

Communications
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
System :: Systems Administration
About: AFD is a program to automatically distribute files either locally
or to remote hosts. The files are distributed by using FTP or SMTP, and
can be sent in parallel and with priority. It provides a GUI to monitor
and control the distribution and extensive logging of all activities.
Changes: When the age-limit option is set and the system is under high
load, it can throw away files even though the age limit has not yet been
reached. When edit_hc removes a host, it only compares the host name to
its length but not the terminating character. Thus, deleting a host could
lead to the removal of the wrong host if the hostname is longer but has
the same beginning as the one to be deleted. These problems have been
fixed.

by Fabrizio Parrella (http://freshmeat.net/users/dnfnva/)
Tue, Nov 23rd 2004 14:18
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: bibEC Process Card is a class that processes credit card payments
via one of the multiple supported payment gateways. Currently, these
include Plug and Pay, Authorize.net, and ViaKlix. Changing between payment
gateways is mostly a matter of changing the class constructor parameter. It
provides a payment gateway independent API with functions for logging the
payment activity, setting authentication credentials, submitting
requests, and retrieving the results. Submissions are performed securely
when possible using SSL or Curl.

[011] - Blackdown Java 2 Standard Edition for Linux 1.4.2-01
by Juergen Kreileder (http://freshmeat.net/users/jkreileder/)
Tue, Nov 23rd 2004 03:30
Internet
Multimedia
Software Development
About: The Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE) is a feature-complete
development and deployment platform. Blackdown provides both a SDK (J2SDK,
formerly known as JDK) and a runtime environment (J2RE) for Linux on
various architectures (ix86, AMD-64, Sparc, PPC, S/390, ARM, m68k). Both
the J2SDK and the J2RE contain the Java Plug-In for Netscape 4.x and
Mozilla/Netscape 6.x.
Changes: This version fixed a security vulnerability with the Java plug-in
in JRE/SDK. Java no longer terminates when the NIO poll- and epoll-based
Selectors return EINTR. A Java Web Start startup deadlock was fixed.
libstdc++ is now linked statically again. A few other small fixes were
made.

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: Libecc is a C++ elliptic curve cryptography library that supports
fixed-size keys for maximum speed. The goal of this project is to become
the first free Open Source library providing the means to generate safe
elliptic curves, and to provide an important source of information for
anyone with general interest in ECC.
Changes: This release added a few theory pages in which the elliptic curve
parameter 'a' is fully analyzed and reduced to a single bit of
significance. The added pages with general mathematical topics handle
Frobenius and the Trace of an element of a field extension. There is also
a new, though still 'hidden' page about Group Theory in this release. Two
new methods have been added to the polynomial class: trace() and normal().

Tue, Nov 23rd 2004 13:56
Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy
About: Chess Training Tools is a collection of chess training tools. It
includes a chess visualization trainer that teaches chess visualization by
drilling you on the color of a particular square, and also on your ability
to tell if two squares are the same color, if two (or three) squares are
on the same diagonal, if two squares are a knight move apart, or if two
squares are two knight moves apart. It includes a weak chess program
(called Vince) that lets you lag the display by several ply, hide all
pieces or all pawns, and block out quadrants of the board. Furthermore, it
includes an opening memorization trainer. The Palm & Pocket PC versions are
missing the mate, opening trainer, and Vince.

[025] - Cyrus IMAP Server 2.2.10 (2.2)
by brashear (http://freshmeat.net/users/derrickbra/)
Tue, Nov 23rd 2004 14:05
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
Internet
About: The Cyrus IMAP server is generally intended to be run on sealed
systems, where normal users are not permitted to log in. The mailbox
database is stored in parts of the filesystem that are private to Cyrus.
All user access to mail is through the IMAP, POP3, or KPOP protocols. The
private mailbox database design gives the server large advantages in
efficiency, scalability, and administratability. Multiple concurrent
read/write connections to the same mailbox are permitted. The server
supports access control lists on mailboxes and storage quotas on mailbox
hierarchies, multiple SASL mechanisms, and the Sieve mail filtering
language.
Changes: A preauthentication buffer overrun was fixed in proxyd. A null
termination issue was fixed in the SASL user canonify routine.

About: DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) is a framework where device
driver source can reside outside the kernel source tree so that it is very
easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors
to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases (as
a stopgap before the code can make it back into the kernel), while also
taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for
new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages since
a separate framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as a
blocking mechanism for distributing code.
Changes: This release includes a fix to handle Red Hat's inclusion of a
/lib/modules/kernel/source symlink in their 2.6.9 and later kernels. The
fix makes it possible to build without kernel preparation again. Another
fix has been made to rectify a problem in ldtarball which was introduced
in DKMS 2.0.2.

[029] - DynChap 0.2
by wvw (http://freshmeat.net/users/wvw/)
Tue, Nov 23rd 2004 14:07
Security
About: DynChap provides an additional pseudo hardware token based
authentication layer for PoPToP virtual private networks. The
authentication uses the user's mobile phone to generate a hash that needs
to be entered along with the user's password in a custom connection
dialogue. Upon connecting, the VPN verifies the authenticity of the hash.
The hash is generated from a serial (by default 32 printable characters)
stored in the J2ME based mobile phone and the current time; the VPN
server compares this hash against the serial and current time, minus or
plus a small deviation (by default 2 minutes). If the username, password,
and hash match, access is granted and the custom dialer is closed, the
connection can now be controlled like an ordinary VPN connection.
Changes: A bugfix for Nokia phones without a time zone. Textual
representation of hashes for smaller displays. XOR'ing the serial before
writing and after reading.

Text Processing :: General
About: ICU provides a Unicode implementation, with functions for
formatting numbers, dates, times, and currencies (according to locale
conventions, transliteration, and parsing text in those formats). It
provides flexible patterns for formatting messages, where the pattern
determines the order of the variable parts of the messages, and the format
for each of those variables. These patterns can be stored in resource files
for translation to different languages. Included are more than 100 codepage
converters for interaction with non-unicode systems.
Changes: ICU locale data is now completely built from the Common Locale
Data Repository 1.2. Many translations have been added or corrected. A new
Universal Timescale mechanism allows quick and reliable conversion between
the different binary representations of date/time that are used on
different platforms. The accept-language API matches Accept-Language (such
as from HTTP) against a list of locales. Calendar/DateFormat performance
has been improved. ICUIO can now read from stdin. There is a major
overhaul of the Users' Guide, which now uses OpenOffice.org.

[051] - MoSSHe 1.2.4
by Volker Tanger (http://freshmeat.net/users/vtanger/)
Tue, Nov 23rd 2004 14:16
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: MoSSHe (MOnitoring with SSH Environment) is a simple, lightweight
(both in size and system requirements) server monitoring package designed
for secure and in-depth monitoring of a number of typical Internet
systems. It was developed to keep the impact on network and performance
low, and to use a safe, encrypted connection for in-depth inspection of
the system checked. It is not possible to remotely run (more or less
arbitrary) commands via the monitoring system, nor is unsafe cleartext
SNMP messaging necessary (yet possible). A read-only Web interface makes
monitoring and status checks simple (and safe) for admins and helpdesk.
Checking scripts for remote and local systems (disk space, load,
processes, users), common services (SMTP, POP3, HTTP) and SNMP queries are
included.
Changes: Safety checks have been added for checks that need
additional/external programs (smmp and localcheck.tempcheck). A bug in
alert handling (line 89) has been fixed. MBMonCheck (CPU temperature, fan
speed, etc.) has been added.

Tue, Nov 23rd 2004 13:54
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: Munin is a system to gather and graph all sorts of information. You
can install a node on the various machines in your network, as well as on a
central server. The nodes will know how to extract various kinds of
information, such as load average and bandwidth usage, and will wait for
the server to request these values. The output is in HTML format. The
server can optionally send notifications if any of the values move outside
of a specified range (and when they move back into it).
Changes: This is a pretty large feature release. A new notification system
(not limited to notifying Nagios) has been made, a couple of design flaws
have been rooted out, comparison views for all the hosts in a group have
been introduced, a lot of new plugins and improvements for the old, and
something to get rid of those pesky bogus peaks in the graph. This version
also introduces a feature freeze on the 1.1 development series, to
stabilise it for the 1.2 stable series.

[061] - PFconf 0.8.1
by Volker Tanger (http://freshmeat.net/users/vtanger/)
Tue, Nov 23rd 2004 14:14
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: Most ACLs (packet filters) don't work with "group" objects where
one can list tables of IP addresses and networks for which one rule is
applied. OpenBSD's "pf" is the notable exception to this rule. So if you
have three email servers and 5 protocols (SMTP, POP3, POP3s, IMAP, and
IMAPS) you will need to write 15 rules instead of one, and not forget a
single permutation. With PFconf you only need one rule, and the script
will take care of the necessary permutations. These scripts are designed
to be fairly simple, leave way room for comments (who ordered that, why is
this rule here, etc.), and the usual quartet: small, efficient, portable,
and easy to use.
Changes: Missed enabling statefulness has been added (i.e. the
"related,established ACCEPT" rules). Missed "statefulness" for ICMP has
been added. "Phoning home" to the demo script has been added. The firewall

[066] - py-radix 0.3
by Damien Miller (http://freshmeat.net/users/damienmill/)
Tue, Nov 23rd 2004 03:50
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
About: py-radix is an implementation of a radix tree data structure for
the storage and retrieval of IPv4 and IPv6 network prefixes. The radix
tree is the data structure most commonly used for routing table lookups.
It efficiently stores network prefixes of varying lengths and allows fast
lookups of containing networks.
Changes: This release warns against modifying a tree while iterating over
it. A Radix.prefixes() method that returns a list of network prefix
strings was added. Argument parsing was improved and now allows keyword
arguments, separate mask lengths, and the specification of packed binary
addresses instead of strings. IPv4 and IPv6 addresses can now be mixed in
the same radix tree. Many more regression tests were added and several
bugs were fixed.

by Caps-Project (http://freshmeat.net/users/caps/)
Tue, Nov 23rd 2004 07:39
Communications :: Chat
Communications :: File Sharing
About: RedCap is a Hotline client that works either with telnet, the "Caps
Interface", or a Web interface. Caps uses the Hotline protocol with some
useful improvements that can be used with the "BlueCap" Hotline server.
The improvements will allow multi-server connections, encryption, advanced
previews, and more.
Changes: You can now summarize downloads. When a transfer is not finished,
the partial files are named my_file.hpf. The task interface now includes
facilities to stop a transfer with "stop_task", cancel a transfer and
remove the file with "cancel_task", and remove a transfer which is
finished or stopped with "delete_task". You can create a local directory
with "lmkdir" and remove a local file with "lrm". A display bug in the
"preview" feature was reviewed. A conversion bug for small file sizes was
corrected. Two things in the agreement display were changed, and now
"agree" and "disagree" are in lowcase.

System :: Software Distribution
System :: Systems Administration
About: ROCK Linux is a distribution build kit for creating Linux
distributions. You can easily design and build your own distribution by
choosing packages, compilers, and optimization options, and optionally
enable the GCC Stack-Smashing Protector for enhanced security. It is also
possible to choose custom configure options, cross-compile, and much more.
Many specialized targets (customized distributions) have already been
created, such as a Desktop, Router, or Minimal distribution. A variety of
architectures are supported.
Changes: All build errors that occurred on the x86 architecture were
fixed. Many tested package updates were merged from the 2.1 branch. A new
"build-bootstrap" package selection provides a small set of packages
necessary to build everything else. This package selection is used for the
"reference build system" to provide cache-files and binary releases.

Tue, Nov 23rd 2004 14:08
System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: The sysstat package contains the sar, mpstat, and iostat commands
for Linux. The sar command collects and reports system activity
information. This information can also be saved in a system activity file
for future inspection. The iostat command reports CPU statistics and I/O
statistics for tty devices and disks. The statistics reported by sar
concern I/O transfer rates, paging activity, process-related activites,
interrupts, network activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU
utilization, kernel activities, and TTY statistics, among others. Both UP
and SMP machines are fully supported.
Changes: A -p has been added to sar that enables it to display device
names as they appear in /dev. sysstat.ioconf support has been added. New
fields have been added to sar -d (more disk activities are displayed). I/O
and transfer rate statistics as displayed by sar -b are available whatever
the version of the kernel is. A workaround has been added for an EMC
PowerPath driver bug to enable iostat to display the proper device name.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
System :: Logging
About: The Freiburg project is an infrastructure to replace shared
libraries with a client/server interface. This system converts a shared
library into a "service" using Unix or inet domain sockets for
communication. The "service" will be usable by any programming language
without additional C programming requirements. An application is a
composition of multiple services using an event-based message bus for
communication. A service can reside locally or remotely using the "client"
or the inetd super-server for startup.
Changes: The API was updated. libtool is not used for the
build-environment, which significantly speeds up building and increases
portability. Transaction work-flow was updated, so there is no longer any
"return-handles" or public transaction API. Speed improvements were made
through better internal caching of used objects and improved header
parsing. The API is now thread-safe, so MUTEX lock is needed for MqCreate
and for MqDelete. Support for C# clients is now available.

[088] - Umbrella 0.5.1
by Kristian Sřrensen (http://freshmeat.net/users/ipqw/)
Tue, Nov 23rd 2004 07:15
Security
About: The Umbrella security mechanism implements a combination of
process-based Mandatory Access Control (MAC) and authentication of files
through Digital Signed Binaries (DSB) for Linux based consumer electronics
devices ranging from mobile phones to settop boxes. Umbrella is implemented
on top of the Linux Security Modules (LSM) framework. The MAC scheme is
enforced by a set of restrictions on each process. This policy is
distributed with a binary in form of execute restrictions (in the file
signature) and within the program, where the developer has the opportunity
of making a restricted fork.
Changes: Some memory allocation bugs were found in the 0.5 release. These
have been corrected, and an Umbrella patched Linux 2.6.9 kernel has been
tested on a working system for more than six days. The script for signing
files and a small description of how to use it were added to the
