[001] - ALSA driver 1.0.7 (Stable)
  by Moritz Barsnick (http://freshmeat.net/users/barsnick/)
  Wed, Nov 24th 2004 02:57

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio

About: The Advanced Linux Sound Architecture is composed of several parts.
The first is a fully modularized sound driver which supports module
autoloading, devfs, isapnp autoconfiguration, and gives complete access to
analog audio, digital audio, control, mixer, synthesizer, DSP, MIDI, and
timer components of audio hardware. It also includes a fully-featured
kernel-level sequencer, a full compatibility layer for OSS/Free
applications, an object-oriented C library which covers and enhances the
ALSA kernel driver functionality for applications (client/server, plugins,
PCM sharing/multiplexing, PCM metering, etc.), an interactive configuration
program for the driver, and some simple utilities for basic management.

Changes: This release fixes many bugs. It brings new drivers for
via82xx-modem, AudioScience asihpi, and Portman2x4.

[002] - Apache Portable Runtime 1.0.1
  by Graham Leggett (http://freshmeat.net/users/minfrin/)
  Wed, Nov 24th 2004 02:18

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: The mission of the Apache Portable Runtime (APR) project is to
create and maintain software libraries that provide a predictable and
consistent interface to underlying platform- specific implementations. The
primary goal is to provide an API to which software developers may code
and be assured of predictable if not identical behaviour regardless of
the platform on which their software is built, relieving them of the need
to code special-case conditions to work around or take advantage of
platform-specific deficiencies or features.

Changes: This release marks the incorporation of a number of fixes.

[003] - Apes 2.5
  by PtiYo (http://freshmeat.net/users/PtiYo/)
  Wed, Nov 24th 2004 05:33

About: Apes is a process production tool (in the project management
meaning of the term). It enables you to model according to the SPEM
standards. Once the model is created, it enables you to generate a Web
site that documents the process. The advantages offered by this tool are
conformity with a standard, the ability to validate a process model, and
the ability to easily modify a model and to regenerate the associated Web
site.

Changes: The core architecture has changed and separated into three
modules, modelization of components with Apes, presentation of components
with Pog, and publication of components with IEPP. A fourth module is in
construction to cover execution. The new Apes features are work
definition, work product state, new types of diagrams (context diagrams,
responsibility diagrams, work definition diagrams, flow diagrams, and
activity diagrams), and interface customization.

About: Easyval is a very basic implementation of interval arithmetic,
using hardware doubles as interval bounds. The first target of this
library is that the interval arithmetic containment criterium is

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Huisrekening is a small utility to ease the sharing of expenses
among friends. It supports multiple users, though everyone can alter
anyone's data. It uses PHP/MySQL/Apache, and should be easy to install.
The only supported language is Dutch.

Changes: A method for dealing with large numbers of activiteiten has been
introduced. "Afrekeningen" allow users to group many different
"activiteiten" (events) and "betalingen" (payments), and facilitate a
reset of the debit-credit balance. Another new feature is "rekeningen"
(accounts), which can manage money but do not participate in
"activiteiten". Minor changes include the possibility to choose a prefix
for the database table names, so that multiple huisrekeningen instances
can coexist in the same database. The user interface has been cleaned up.

  Wed, Nov 24th 2004 01:39

Internet
Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Ipfreeze is a program that listens to the netlink device. It takes
the source address from every incoming packet and adds it to a Netfilter
"blacklist" chain. The address is removed from this chain after a
user-definable period of time. This allows you to create rules that detect
and halt certain odd behaviors, such as ports scans, syn floods, or
connection attempts on forbidden ports. The attacker's IP address is
blacklisted using the QUEUE target. There is also a whitelist where you
can declare hosts that you never want to be blacklisted.

Changes: It is now possible to manage blacklist in the NAT table. This
allows firewall to automatically redirect packets to another host (fake
server, honeypot, etc.) instead of just dropping them.

[034] - Metabase 2004.11.24
  by Manuel Lemos (http://freshmeat.net/users/mlemos/)
  Wed, Nov 24th 2004 11:28

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: Metabase consists of a set of PHP classes to access and manage
databases using an API that assures DBMS independence. It supports MySQL,
PostgreSQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL server, Microsoft Access, ODBC,
Interbase, Informix, MiniSQL, and SQLite flat file databases. There is a
function library that interfaces with DBMS specific driver classes, a
parser class that interperts a custom XML format used to describe database
schemas, and a manager class that installs database schema objects (tables,
indexes, sequences) using the Metabase API. The manager class is also able
to upgrade a previously installed database to a new schema without
affecting that data that was stored since the database was installed or
was upgraded for the last time. There is also schema reverse engineering
support to help migrate database-specific applications and start using
Metabase.

Changes: The default value for sequence auto-incremented fields was
dropped in the MySQL schema manager class, as it is no longer supported
under MySQL 4.1. The determination of the debug callback function was
fixed for when the schema manager database setup arguments are passed as a
connection string. PHP warnings are suppressed when a schema file name is
incorrect. A few regular expressions used in the schema parser class were
fixed.

[035] - Mini vMac 2.5.0 (Development)
  by Paul C. Pratt (http://freshmeat.net/users/prattpc/)
  Wed, Nov 24th 2004 02:49

System :: Emulators

About: Mini vMac is a minor spin off of the program vMac. Its goal is to
provide the simplest usable emulation of a Macintosh. Mini vMac, like
vMac, emulates a Mac Plus, a Macintosh computer sold between 1986 and
1990. They both can be used to run old software that otherwise couldn't be
used on recent machines, including nearly all of the earliest Macintosh
software. Like vMac, it requires a ROM image file to run, and so can be
legally used only by those who own a Mac Plus.

Changes: Some highlights of this release are emulation of the extended
Parameter RAM, assorted fixes, and more speed in the Macintosh version.

Communications
Communications :: File Sharing
Internet

About: P2P Sockets makes it easy to write peer-to-peer applications based
on JXTA. P2P Sockets allows programmers to gain much of the power of JXTA,
such as NAT and firewall traversal, without being exposed to its
complexity. It does this through ports of popular software projects to
work on the JXTA peer-to-peer network. This includes a Web server (Jetty),
a servlet and JSP engine (Jetty and Jasper), and more. P2P Sockets also
introduces implementations of java.net.Socket and java.net.ServerSocket
that can work on the JXTA network as well as a simple, light-weight,
distributed, human-friendly, and non-secure DNS system.

Changes: A critical bug has been fixed that was preventing P2P Sockets
from working with the latest version of JXTA. Ported to JXTA 2.3.1.
Significant performance improvements. This release embeds the JXTA
profiler rather than its own for automatic peer configuration. A much
simpler, easier, and smaller internal design. Completely revamped and
up-to-date documentation. Support for easily creating peer-to-peer
WikiWikis. Ported to the 2.0.2 version of the Apache Commons HTTP client.

[055] - Python milter 0.7.2
  by Stuart D. Gathman (http://freshmeat.net/users/stuartdgathman/)
  Wed, Nov 24th 2004 11:18

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: The milter module for Python provides a python interface to
Sendmail's libmilter that exploits all its features. Milters can run on
the same machine as sendmail, or another machine. The milter can even run
with a different operating system or processor than sendmail. Sendmail
talks to the milter via a local or internet socket, and keeps the milter
informed of events as it processes a mail connection. At any point, the
milter can cut the conversation short by telling sendmail to ACCEPT,
REJECT, or DISCARD the message. After receiving a complete message from
sendmail, the milter can again REJECT or DISCARD it, but it can also
ACCEPT it with changes to the headers or body.

Changes: Recognizes PTR records for dynamic IPs. Implements a "3 strikes
and you're out" policy for email senders. Implements a coherent policy for
SPF "neutral" and "softfail" results. Provides an RHS blacklist macro for
sendmail. Fixes some SPF bugs.

which can be on different servers. It's very stable and provides
statistics, control, and reporting through specific orders (like starting
up a connection pool, shutting it down, getting statistics from that
specific pool or for the whole SQuaLe instance).

Changes: This release implements large file support so that the log file
can grow bigger than 2GB on systems that can support it. There are
documentation updates for squale-run and random cleanups in the contrib
source code.

[061] - Stager 1.1
  by UNINETT AS (http://freshmeat.net/users/uninett/)
  Wed, Nov 24th 2004 11:19

Database :: Front-Ends
Internet
Internet :: Log Analysis

About: Stager is a system for aggregating and presenting network
statistics. Though tailored for using NetFlow data from the flow-tools
package, it is generic and can be customized to present and process any
kind of network statistics. The backend collects data with flow-tools
and stores reports in a database, automatically handling the aggregation
of hourly statistics into days, weeks, and months. The Web frontend
presents data in tables, matrices, or plots. The reports are fully
customizable, and their definitions are stored in the database.

Changes: The main improvements in this release are improved stability,
resource control, and automatically fetching missing data in backend.
Overview report is improved with better performance, support for sorting,
and manual and automatic selection of columns. There are many bugfixes and
other improvements.

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
System :: Logging

About: The Freiburg project is an infrastructure to replace shared
libraries with a client/server interface. This system converts a shared
library into a "service" using Unix or inet domain sockets for
communication. The "service" will be usable by any programming language
without additional C programming requirements. An application is a
composition of multiple services using an event-based message bus for
communication. A service can reside locally or remotely using the "client"
or the inetd super-server for startup.

Changes: This version uses libFreiburg 2.0 libraries, includes an API
update, updates the transaction work-flow so that there is no 'returnhdl'
any more, no longer uses environment variables, includes a speed increase
of ~50%, includes a new statistics subcommand for $context, and a new
timer subcommand for $context.

[067] - Usepackage Environment Manager 1.8b4 (Beta)
  by Jonathan Hogg (http://freshmeat.net/users/hoggy/)
  Wed, Nov 24th 2004 11:31

Desktop Environment
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities

About: Usepackage is a tool for managing the Unix environment for a
multi-tool, multi-platform site. It is designed to simplify login scripts
and allow administrators to control users' environments centrally. This
tool should be considered primarily designed for sites where users have to
deal with a number of different tools, or versions of tools, that are
installed in different locations and require environment variables to be
set. This is particularly a problem for developers, or anyone who has to
manage a large toolset across multiple platforms (e.g. different versions
of the Sun JDK which require various environment variables to be set
correctly). One or more central configuration files control a number of
different "packages" and their associated environment and dependencies for
different platforms (this includes the standard PATH, MANPATH, and
LD_LIBRARY_PATH variables). A single user command, use, can be invoked to
source the appropriate environment information into the users' current
shell.

Changes: This release supports basic checking for the existence of
directories before adding them to a path (or setting a variable) using the
new "?=" and "?+=" operators. The order that variables are sourced into the
environment has been changed to better support using other variables as
parts of updates to the environment (e.g. "FOO=/opt/foo,
PATH+=$FOO/bin;").

  Wed, Nov 24th 2004 15:33

Internet
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing
System :: Networking

About: webCDwriter can be used to make the CD- and DVD-writer(s) connected
to a Linux box available to all users in your network. It consists of the
server CDWserver and the clients webCDcreator and rcdrecord. CDWserver
stores the files transmitted by the clients, reserves the CD-writer and
controls the CD-writer using cdrecord. webCDcreator is a Java applet that
runs within your browser or by Java Web Start, assists you when putting
together a CD, and transmits the files. Finally rcdrecord is a command
line client that tries to offer the functionality of cdrecord over the
network with full multi-user support.

Changes: This release fixes several small bugs, and the commercial server
supports SSL encrypted client connections.

[070] - White Water 2.26
  by Sir Logic (http://freshmeat.net/users/danwillett/)
  Wed, Nov 24th 2004 02:01

Internet

About: White Water allows people with limited or metered bandwidth to
publish files for download by thousands of people without saturating
their bandwidth. Downloaders participate by distributing chunks of the
file amongst themselves but gain by downloading several parts of the file
simultaneously. The download speed will generally be limited only by the
downloaders own bandwidth, not that of the publisher. It can also be used
in server or proxy mode, publishing and downloading files for entire
networks whilst providing more permanent sharing of cached files.

Changes: This release fixes file descriptor reference counting which
caused an assert() after serving lots of files in proxy mode, adds a
--verify-cache option, and no longer verifies the cache on every proxy
startup (because it takes ages with a large cache). There are also a few
other changes and fixes.

[071] - Wi.Ser Beta 0.5.8

  Wed, Nov 24th 2004 05:56

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Wi.Ser is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables an
application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server Swing
app, or as a Web app without any change. It includes a mixed deployment
mode, which supports one server to serve Swing clients and Web clients at
the same time. The framework uses XML to define an application's GUI. It
provides a common widget-based, object-oriented programming interface for
Web and Swing GUIs, which prevents the developer from struggling with HTML
and HTTP or with the internals of Swing. For Swing client/server
applications the client/server split as well as the client/server
communication is handled transparently by the framework. The project
includes a GUI builder that is based on the framework's functionality
(screenshot, deployed as a Web/HTML application).

Changes: This release makes some new tags available in the GUI builder.
The GUI builder now has a more dynamic layout, and the preview functions
were enhanced. A bug in the HTML splitpane renderer has been corrected.

About: XMille is the classic game of Mille Bourne for X Windows. It is
card game against the computer in which each player tries to reach 700 or
1000 miles in a hand. Each player tries to avoid accidents, flat tires,
running out of gas, and break downs while trying to cause these same
maladies in the opponent. The final object of the game is to be the first
team to accumulate a total of 5,000 points in several hands of play. In
doing so, you must try to complete a trip of exactly 700 or 1,000 miles in
each hand played. Also known as Mile Stones, Mile Bones, Mille Borne.

  Wed, Nov 24th 2004 07:31

Communications :: Email
Security
Security :: Cryptography

About: Z1 SecureMail Gateway is a central, server-based software solution
which provides encryption and digital signatures for the entire email
traffic of an organization. It works with organizational certificates and
certificates for individual users, groups or organizational units. It
provides its services transparently to end users. Z1 SecureMail Gateway
automatically finds the certificates of external users or companies via
the Internet. Secure email traffic to customers, suppliers, and partners
is easily established, no matter whether or not they also deploy Z1
SecureMail Gateway. Packages for Red Hat and SuSE are available for
download.

Changes: A statistic module was added for summaries and graphical charts
on mail traffic and security. It shows how many email messages went in and
out, how many of them were encrypted and/or signed, which standard was used
(PGP or S/MIME), and more. User friendliness for the "INFO" User Command
was improved. The "ONLY" User Command was improved to work with PGP and
SMIME. Bugs were fixed. External key management (named Z1 BOT) now
supports Online Service Certificate Protocol (OCSP).
