[001] - Aggrevator 0.6.0 beta
  by Adewale Oshineye (http://freshmeat.net/users/adewale/)
  Wed, Dec 8th 2004 07:22

About: Aggrevator is an RSS/Atom aggregator that uses a MySQL 4.1 database
for storage. The main advantage of Aggrevator is that it is scalable. It
has been tested successfully with 4000 simultaneous feeds from a variety
of sources. Once your database is set up, you can connect to it from any
running instance of Aggrevator (with a valid username and password), so
you no longer have to manually synchronize different installations of the
same aggregator.

  Wed, Dec 8th 2004 04:52

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Scientific/Engineering
Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: cb2Bib is a convenient application for rapidly extracting
biblographic references from email alerts, journal Web pages, or PDF
files. It facilitates the capture of single references from unformatted
sources. The references are then written in the BibTeX standard. A PDF
file with the article text, if available, can be easily linked and renamed
by dragging it onto the cb2Bib window. Reference manager applications can
later retrieve, import, and display these BibTeX references.

Changes: This is a minor improvement and bugfix realease. It corrects a
wrong enable/disable behavior in PDFImport button, sets the PDF
copy/move/renaming to be consistently managed by cb2Bib instead of
kfmclient, and adds error descriptions for file related warnings. Also,
it includes an 'IOP Electronic Journals' import regexp, and highlighting
for abstract|introduction|keywords|key words in clipboard panel.

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Recovery Tools

About: chpox provides transparent checkpointing and restarting of
processes on Linux clusters. It was originally designed for recovering of
tasks that takes long execution time (i.e. numerical simulations) in case
of system crashes, power failures, etc. It works with openMosix, is SMP
safe, works as a kernel module, does not require kernel patches or program
recompiling/relinking, and supports virtual memory, regular open files,
pipes, Unix domain sockets, current directory, termios, and child
processes.

Changes: Support for the s390 and s390x architectures was added. A new
dump file format was introduced. Chpox now correctly saves and restores
processes that use GS and FS registers for TLS on the i386 architecture.
Other bugfixes and security fixes were made.

[018] - Domino/JBoss Single Sign On 1.05.01
  by Ken Yee (http://freshmeat.net/users/kenyee/)
  Wed, Dec 8th 2004 20:33

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: Domino/JBoss SSO allows you to create a mixed J2EE/ Domino Web site
that is seamless to your users. Users will only have to log in once,
whether they are in a Lotus Domino Web application or a J2EE application.
Management of J2EE users/roles is done using the standard Notes/Domino
infrastructure so there is no need to learn another environment, use
another database, or modify XML files.

Changes: This version works with JBoss 4.0.0+ and JBoss 3.2.5+. Additional
logging support was added to assist in debugging setup problems.
Interoperability with Websphere was tested (single sign-on with Websphere
is possible, provided you also have a Lotus Domino server in the network).
This allows you to add JBoss servers to your Web infrastructure with
minimal cost.

  Wed, Dec 8th 2004 05:02

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Multimedia :: Video
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: ffmpeg-php is an extension for PHP that adds an easy to use,
object-oriented API for accessing and retrieving information from movies
and audio files. It has methods for returning frames from movie files as
images that can be manipulated using PHP's image functions. This works
well for automatically creating thumbnail images from movie files, and
it's fast enough to extract thumbnails on the fly so that thumbnail images
don't need to be stored. ffmpeg-php is also useful for reporting the
duration and bitrate of audio files (mp3, wma...). ffmpeg-php can access
many of the formats supported by ffmpeg.

Changes: This release adds support for PHP5, a better Gentoo ebuild, and
some minor bugfixes. It can now query duration and bitrate of Windows
Media Audio (WMA) files.

[022] - Firewall Builder 2.0.4
  by Vadim Kurland (http://freshmeat.net/users/vkurland/)
  Wed, Dec 8th 2004 20:00

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Firewall Builder consists of a GUI and set of policy compilers for
various firewall platforms. It helps users maintain a database of objects
and allows policy editing using simple drag-and-drop operations. The GUI
and policy compilers are completely independent, which provides for a
consistent abstract model and the same GUI for different firewall
platforms. It currently supports iptables, ipfilter, ipfw, OpenBSD pf, and
Cisco PIX.

Changes: New policy activation methods using iptables-restore are now
available for Linux/iptables firewalls. Iptables-restore provides for
atomic policy load and allows you to load large policies much faster.
Atomic load means the whole filter or NAT table is activated at once, and
if there is an error, nothing is changed. A new installation method has
been implemented for PIX firewalls. "Safety Net Install" provides a way to
manage access lists on a PIX firewall through the IPSEC tunnel. This
version comes with Japanese and Russian translations.

[023] - Firewall Builder for PIX 1.1.6
  by Vadim Kurland (http://freshmeat.net/users/vkurland/)
  Wed, Dec 8th 2004 20:01

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Firewall Builder for PIX hides the complexity of PIX command line
interface and automatically configures options and parameters that
usually make manual configuration a real chore. With this module, the
same workstation running Firewall Builder can create and manage security
policy on Cisco PIX firewalls, as well as on firewalls built with
iptables, OpenBSD pf, or ipfilter.

Changes: New installation method has been implemented for PIX firewalls.
"Safety Net Install" provides a way to manage access lists on a PIX
firewall through the IPSEC tunnel. Previously this was impossible because
"clear access-list" command would switch firewall into all blocking mode,
which breaks the tunnel. Safety Net Install works around this problem and
maintains communication through the tunnel at all times.

  Wed, Dec 8th 2004 13:45

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Chemistry

About: GNU polyxmass features an integrated mass spectrometry framework
where users are able to define brand new polymer chemistries (within the
polyxdef module), and use these definitions in order to make simple mass
calculations (within the polyxcalc module) or perform complex simulations
of polymer chemistry with related mass data computations (within the
polyxedit module). The framework allows full customization of every aspect
of the polymer chemistry being defined, and of the way the polymer
sequences are graphically displayed. This program was formerly called
"polyXmass".

Changes: This release adds calculation of net electrical charge for a
given polymer sequence at any given pH value, and calculation of the
isoelectric point of a given polymer sequence. These calculations are
based on the definition of pKa values for any chemical group (in monomers
and modifications) that might bring an electrical charge.

About: The Infotrope ACAP Server is an implementation of RFC2244, complete
with asynchronous notification of changes, stored search results, ACLs, and
data inheritance, etc. It supports TLS and SASL encryption as well as
almost the entire base standard, plus a few optional extensions. ACAP
allows applications to store configuration data in a way that's standards
based, fully interoperable, and easily managed by users, administrators,
and technical support teams alike. Infotrope's key features include the
ability to randomly crash the server without data loss, and backing up of
data (even while it's being written) without losing integrity.

Changes: A particularly annoying bug where the server would constantly
perform full dumps of the datastore was fixed. This did not cause any
data loss, but was really silly.

About: IQ is an intelligent IRC robot framework. It is modular, and can
dynamically load and unload modules. Writing modules for the bot is
simple, and any PHP developer should be able to write his or her own
modules to have the bot act as needed. IQ modules utilize a binding system
(modeled after that used by eggdrop) which creates triggers that can be
executed upon any regular event (msg, join, kick, nick, quit, part, etc.),
as well as other bot-specific events (idle, connect, disconnect), and call
a lambda-style function in the module to perform the desired action.
Several official modules are included: weather, Google searching,
gametiger.net searching, DNS, acronym finder, and an intelligent
auto-oping module.

[038] - JDBCImporter 0.63
  by Chris Nagy (http://freshmeat.net/users/cnagyxyz/)
  Wed, Dec 8th 2004 02:34

Database :: API
Utilities

About: JDBCImporter provides a consistent mechanism for importing data
from a file to a database, exporting data from a database to a file, and
generating data. It can run from the command line using an XML config
file or from inside an Ant build script. It works with CSV, fixed data,
and XML files and supports numbers, strings, and date/times as database
column types. Custom classes can be used to parse different file
formats, format column values into different file formats, translate
column values before importing or after exporting, or allocate or release
JDBC connections.

Changes: This release moved the column translator definition into a
'translator' tag inside the 'column' tag and allowed properties to be set
on the column translator. The old way of specifying the column translator
is still available. All of the column translators, column generators,
delimiter parsers, delimiter formatters, and connection definitions have
default prefixes.

  Wed, Dec 8th 2004 09:01

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Kernel TCP Virtual Server is a Layer-7 switching software in the
Linux Virtual Server framework. It can do application-level load balancing
(such as content-based scheduling) inside the Linux kernel. The reason for
implementing it inside the kernel is to avoid the overhead of context
switching and memory copying between user-space and kernel-space. Although
the its scalability is lower than that of IPVS (IP Virtual Server), it is
flexible, because the content of the request is known before the request
is redirected to the real server.

the game easier to use and less difficult for new players. The most
notable additions: a new economy so long term players have less of an
advantage over new players; special Pilot Skills like Dodge Maneuver and

[047] - mpiBLAST 1.3.0
  by Aaron Darling (http://freshmeat.net/users/darling/)
  Wed, Dec 8th 2004 13:57

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics

About: mpiBLAST is an MPI based parallel implementation of NCBI BLAST. It
consists of a pair of programs that replace formatdb and blastall with
versions that execute BLAST jobs in parallel on a cluster of computers
with MPI installed. There are two primary advantages to using mpiBLAST
versus traditional BLAST. First, mpiBLAST splits the database across each
node in the cluster. Because each node's segment of the database is
smaller it can usually reside in the buffer-cache, yielding a significant
speedup due to the elimination of disk I/O. Second, it allows BLAST users
to take advantage of efficient, low-cost Beowulf clusters because
interprocessor communication demands are low. mpiBLAST achieves
super-linear speedup in situations where the database is too large to fit
into RAM, and near linear speedup in other situations. It does not require
a dedicated cluster.

Changes: This release improves reliability, performance, and accuracy.
Streaming results output reduces memory requirements for large query sets.
Database pipelining speeds up data distribution by limiting contention for
a shared filesystem. This release calculates exact E-value statistics
using both the effective query and effective database lengths.

[050] - ngetdaemon 0.29
  by saunders (http://freshmeat.net/users/saunders/)
  Wed, Dec 8th 2004 20:20

Communications :: Usenet News

About: ngetdaemon allows quick and efficient perusing and downloading from
Usenet remotely. Updating and sorting of all headers is done with one
click. The strongest feature is that posts are grouped together in 'file
groups', meaning a post consisting of 100 files is compacted into one line
and determined to be complete, incomplete, par fills, etc. There are no
pretty buttons, animations, etc. Everything is designed to create as
little strain on bandwidth as possible.

Changes: An option to change the refresh speeds of the daemon stats iframe
and download queue iframe was added. The "flushing headers" status was
added to the queue page. The program now detects if the daemon is running
and allows for it to be shutdown and restarted from the GUI. A measurement
of how much RAM is used when updating headers is now shown. The number of
hidden downloads with errors and the number of hidden paused files are now
shown. Empty groups in graphs are now left out. Many small tweaks and fixes

sources, in MS-DOS COM format or CP/M 86 CMD. The new operators HIGH, LOW,
!, &&, ||, and the condtional expression operator ? were added as C-style
synonyms for existing operators. Debug output was improved. Brackets are
used in addition to parentheses for indirect operands.

[067] - Set CD-ROM Speed 1.1.2
  by Michal Kosmulski (http://freshmeat.net/users/mkosmul/)
  Wed, Dec 8th 2004 07:48

System :: Hardware
Utilities

About: Set-cd-rom-speed is an application for setting CD-ROM and DVD-ROM
drive speed, written with KDE Kommander. Fast CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives
have one big disadvantage over older and slower models in that they are
often quite loud because of the disk spinning very fast in the drive.
Using set-cd-rom-speed, you can decrease the drive's speed and thus reduce
the annoying noise.

Changes: An improved heuristic for finding CD and DVD drives is used now.
"CD or DVD Drive" is displayed instead of an empty string if a
human-readable device name can't be determined. install.sh now displays a
warning if Kommander isn't installed. A bug which caused set-cd-rom-speed
to become confused on systems where awk isn't a link to gawk was fixed.

[070] - SMS Server Tools 1.14.8
  by Stefan Frings (http://freshmeat.net/users/sfrings/)
  Wed, Dec 8th 2004 10:59

About: The SMS Server Tools were made to send and receive SMS from one or
many GSM modems. They include a send/receive daemon and some sample
scripts to build an SMS email gateway and for logging into an SQL
database. The daemon waits for files in an outgoing spool directory and
sends them. It puts all received SMS in an incoming spool directory, and
can call any external program for incoming or outgoing notification.

[073] - Stunnix Perl-Obfus 2.4

  Wed, Dec 8th 2004 10:58

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Pre-processors

About: Stunnix Perl-Obfus is a unique solution for protecting your
valuable intellectual property from possible Perl source code
piracy/studying/rework. It's an advanced and extremely reliable obfuscator
for the Perl source code. It converts the Perl source files (.pl and .pm)
into highly mangled and obfuscated forms, making them extremely difficult
to study, analyse, reuse, or re-work for competitors or customers, while
fully retaining functionality of the original source code. It's not a
compiler to machine code, and the obfuscated form will still be the usual
Perl source code, and so will work on all platforms the original source
worked on.

Changes: This release adds better support for some unsafe and rarely-used
Perl constructs. Now it's possible to protect projects containing an
arbitrary number of files. There are various bugfixes and improvements all
over the code and documentation.
