Section: Project Reviews
Sat, Jan 8th 2005 00:00
Four years ago, I wrote an article for freshmeat called "The World Free
Web" in which I described a way to make Web content available in a
distributed and anonymous way via Freenet. Back then, I expected, as did
many others, that Freenet was on the verge of completion, and all that
remained was to think of interesting new applications to write on this new
platform.

About: aescrypt2 is a command line file encryption program that relies on
AES-CBC-256 plus HMAC-SHA256. It has been designed to be portable (works
on all Unix flavors and Win32) as well as very straightforward to use.
Changes: This release features strong 256-bit AES encryption, an integrity
check based on HMAC-SHA256, a stronger password hashing algorithm that
prevents fast dictionnary attacks, and largefile support on Linux,
Solaris, *BSD, and Windows. Please note that version 1.0 is not compatible
with aescrypt2-rc1.

streams, and features a fresh and efficient approach to playlist handling.
The emphasis is on the quick and easy user interface, allowing for fast
access to the media library.
Changes: Changes include improved GNOME support, better precision for the
visualizations with GStreamer, and a random track feature for the Smart
Playlists. This release now has built-in support for the iPod, allowing

[004] - ARSC Really Simple Chat 3.0-rc1
by Manuel Kiessling (http://freshmeat.net/users/pgod/)
Sat, Jan 8th 2005 11:48
Communications :: Chat
About: ARSC Really Simple Chat is a Web chat system that uses PHP and
MySQL. It works with every browser in existence, even text-based ones, and
it uses the server push technique or, if possible, its own socket server.
It is very simple to install and use ARSC. It includes some important
features, such as operators, kick-ing, whispering, and more. Multiple
rooms and different languages are available. To run ARSC on your site, you
need a Web server that understands PHP, and can connect to a MySQL
database.
Changes: A refresh link was added to the moderation queue. The install
script now detects if ARSC is already installed, and was extended with the
possibility to set certain parameters at install time for use with external
installation scripts. A bug was fixed which announced a new user twice.

[005] - C++ Regex Engine 0.03a
by unr_stuart (http://freshmeat.net/users/unr_stuart/)
Sat, Jan 8th 2005 00:07
Text Processing
About: C++ Regex Engine provides a robust regular expression library for
use in C++. The syntax of the regular expression language is very close to
the Perl 5 standard. The classes given somewhat mirror those found in
Java's regular expression library, but have several improvements. The
intended audience of this package is anyone who does a lot of data parsing
(e.g. sysadmins), people tired of trying to decipher Perl scripts, and
regular expression beginners who know C++. Some knowledge of the STL's
vector and string will come in handy, but isn't necessary.
Changes: Some MSVC6 compilation problems were fixed and the operational
correctness of the library on 64-bit Linux was verified.

database for the retrieval of the tags. It supports custom file renaming
based on the tags (with any directory stucture), as well as custom tagging
based on the file names. MP3, Ogg, and FLAC are currently supported.
Changes: An MP3 tagging bug was fixed. The UI was improved a lot,
featuring autocompletion of the path field, highlighting of valid masks
for patterns, and easier navigation through the table with the keyboard.
Problems in which Ogg/FLAC files weren't recognized as tagged or untagged
properly and ID3v2 tag was incorrectly overwritten were fixed.

[013] - ffmpeg-php extension 0.4.1
by tkirby (http://freshmeat.net/users/tkirby/)
Sat, Jan 8th 2005 00:17
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Multimedia :: Video
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: ffmpeg-php is an extension for PHP that adds an easy to use
object-oriented API for accessing and retrieving information from movies
and audio files. It has methods for returning frames from movie files as
images that can be manipulated using PHP's image functions. This works
well for automatically creating thumbnail images from movie files, and
it's fast enough to extract thumbnails on the fly so that thumbnail images
don't need to be stored. ffmpeg-php is also useful for reporting the
duration and bitrate of audio files (mp3, wma...). ffmpeg-php can access
many of the formats supported by ffmpeg.
Changes: New getVideoCodec, getAudioCodec, and getAudioChannels methods
were added along with a constructor to create an ffmpeg_frame object from
a GD image. Incorrect error reporting was fixed in get_decoder. A nasty
memory leak in free ffmpeg_frame was made along with many code cleanups.

it can generate all common HTML elements (table, list box, drop down list
box, multi-select list box, etc.) and XML. Developers can easily create
their own templates.
Changes: ArraySQL allows a Java developer to query 2-dimensional Object
arrays (Object[][]) in an SQL-like manner. Improvements have been made in
syntax error checking, and a few bug fixes have been made. ArraySQL is
easy to use.

Sat, Jan 8th 2005 00:13
System :: Boot
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Networking
About: Netplug is a Linux daemon that manages network interfaces in
response to network cables being plugged in and out. If you're familiar
with Windows XP, which just does the Right Thing when you plug an ethernet
cable into a laptop, netplug will need no further explanation. Basically,
netplug brings up an interface and runs a DHCP client when a cable is
plugged into that interface, and it brings the interface down when the
cable is unplugged. On a typical Linux system or laptop, you have to run a
command (such as "/sbin/ifup") manually to handle these events, but netplug
automates this for you.
Changes: A longstanding bug with writing out the PID file was fixed.
Changes were synched from Fedora Core 3. Numerous minor documentation and

does not have to be of the same size, as it calculates the partition
layout itself). Currently, ext2, ext3, minix, MS-DOS, FAT, VFAT, Reiserfs,
XFS, and JFS filesystems are supported. It can restore disks in Software
RAID and LVM mode. It supports the One Button Disaster Recovery (OBDR)
mode, which simulates a bootable CD-ROM on tape.
Changes: Support for Fedorea Core 3, uDev, and LVM2 are finally included.

recognize and enable USB CD-ROM devices at boot time (e.g. with Blade

Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
About: SaVi is satellite visualization software that lets you create, run,
examine, and modify satellite orbits in two and three dimensions.
Simulations of Iridium, Teledesic, Globalstar, GPS, and other satellite
constellations are included. SaVi requires Tcl and Tk on a Unix system.
SaVi works well with the 3D renderer Geomview. Geomview is optional,
though recommended for its 3D rendering capabilities.
Changes: This version polishes and improves SaVi considerably over
previous releases. The coverage panel has been beefed up with a menubar
and playbar making it easier to use and with the ability to display
coverage in an almost infinite variety of colors. Texture-mapping under
Geomview has been improved, and is now of much visibly higher quality. The
installation process has been made more helpful.

[040] - Smieciuch++ 0.6.0
by Sebastian Kaliszewski (http://freshmeat.net/users/sebaska/)
Sat, Jan 8th 2005 21:26
Other/Nonlisted Topic
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Smieciuch++ is a tiny and portable precise garbage collection
library for C++. It is lightweight and easy to integrate into an existing
project. The code is nearly pure standard C++, so it's also very portable.
Precise collection means that the library knows what is a pointer and does
not need to guess (as typical GC solution does).
Changes: This version of the library adds smart pointers to constant data
and weak pointers. There are bugfixes and other changes like support for
std::less over the smart pointers, allowing to use them as ordering
values in standard C++ collections.

practice of adding just a few lines of original text and quoting a
complete message below them.

for gnupg 1.2.4, 1.2.5, and 1.2.6 were included.
