[002] - Access_user Class 1.61
by olaf (http://freshmeat.net/users/olaf2/)
Wed, Jan 19th 2005 15:50
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: Access_user Class is an easy to use system for protecting pages and
registering users. The main features are user login, user registration,
page protection, forgotten password recovery, and email-based account
activation. The class is powered by MySQL and PHP sessions. Inside the
package are examples for all primary methods.
Changes: The md5 encoding to the password in the methods login_user() and
get_user_info() has been changed, because there was an error reported
after updating the account with a new password (the second time). All
server variables have been changed to fit the configuration with
register_globals = off.

Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: Active Calendar is a PHP class that generates calendars (month or
year view) as HTML tables (XHTML-Valid). It can produce static calendars
without any links or calendars with navigation controls, a date picker
control, event days and content with event URLs, and linkable days
(optionally URL or Javascript). The layout can be configured using CSS,
and JavaScript is not required. The supported dates (on systems using a
32-bit signed integer Unix time_t) are: 1902-2037 (Unix) and 1971-2037
(Windows), when using the default PHP native date functions, and 100-3000
and later, when using the ADOdb Date Library.
Changes: The class can now display contents within the day passed by the
new public method setEventContent(). The methods enableMonthNav() and
enableYearNav() have been modified to optionally set the calendar
navigation controls. The method showYear() now accepts a parameter to set
the number of months in each row of the year calendar. The generated HTML
class names (CSS layout) can be set in the configuration, to avoid
conficts with existing names of your projects. Finally, a new example
script has been added to demonstrate how to set events using a flat file.

development team can start using the new build artifacts, the
documentation team can review the revision log listing newly implemented
features, and the management team can measure progress more readily. It
supports many reposistory adapters, including CVS, VSS (SourceSafe),
Perforce, Clearcase, PVCS, StarTeam, MKSIntegrity, and FileSystem.
Changes: Many small bugfixes and some new features, including an optional
script to the repository user name to email address maps. This script
facilitates on the fly calculation of email addresses from user names. The
example script will take a repository user name of "jane" and return an
email address of jane at domain.com.

About: cw is a non-intrusive real-time ANSI color wrapper for common
Unix-based commands. It is designed to simulate the environment of the
commands being executed, so that if a person types 'du', 'df', 'ping',
etc. in their shell it will automatically color the output in real-time
according to a definition file containing the color format desired. It
has support for wildcard match coloring, tokenized coloring,
headers/footers, case scenario coloring, command-line- dependent
definition coloring, and includes over 50 pre- made definition files.
Changes: A bug that could cut off the last lines of long output from
programs that process faster than cw was fixed. Passing of the exit value
was added. The "ifos", "ifnos", ifos-else" and "ifarg-else" definition
instructions were added for more specific coloring situatons. The
"nobackground" definition instruction was added to disable stopping the
program (with ^Z). Support for stopping the program while running (with
^Z) was added. Support for Solaris and Cygwin was added. The deprecated
"OS=" argument used in conjunction with "ifarg" was removed. The pre-made
groups, arp, mount, ping, lsof, ps, and df definition files were added or

the compiler generates complete, ready-to-run implementations in PHP or
mod_perl. Applications maintain their state in a relational database and
are inherently fault-tolerant, secure, and scalable.
Changes: Many new language features including improved support for
accessing external databases, customizable table displays, and improved
HTML support including OBJECT and SCRIPT tags, radio buttons, password

Information Management :: Records Management
About: enetman is a network asset management Web application written in
PHP with a MySQL backend. Its intended use is to maintain a structured
list of servers that can be cross referenced by location, manufacturer,
vendor, CPU, and OS. It allows for a user to create and maintain
locations, manufacturers, and vendors along with contact names and phone
numbers to each. It contains a device log that tracks issues that servers
have had, a list of network ports on the server along with IP information
(IP, subnet, gateway, DNS, network card make/model and MAC) for each port
(this includes aliased ports), and a software manager that keeps tabs on
expiration dates of software. It enables the user to create a directory
tree with files that can then be attached to locations, vendors,
manufacturers, software, or servers. It maintains a list of all software
installed on a server and how many licenses are allocated to it.

by Volker Tanger (http://freshmeat.net/users/vtanger/)
Wed, Jan 19th 2005 03:02
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: MoSSHe (MOnitoring with SSH Environment) is a simple, lightweight
(both in size and system requirements) server monitoring package designed
for secure and in-depth monitoring of a number of typical Internet
systems. It was developed to keep the impact on network and performance
low, and to use a safe, encrypted connection for in-depth inspection of
the system checked. It is not possible to remotely run (more or less
arbitrary) commands via the monitoring system, nor is unsafe cleartext
SNMP messaging necessary (yet possible). A read-only Web interface makes
monitoring and status checks simple (and safe) for admins and helpdesk.
Checking scripts are included for remote services (DNS, HTTP, IMAP2,
IMAP3, POP3, samba, SMTP, and SNMP) and local systems (disk space, load,
CPU temperature, fan speed, free memory, print queue size and activity,
processes, RAID status, and shells).
Changes: This release adds "changes only" notifications/alerts, with
stale server status files (i.e. when server removed from monitoring) now
automatically removed. It also adds Linux- SoftRAID monitoring for
LOCALCHECK.

[060] - Openwall Linux kernel patch 2.4.29-ow1 (Linux 2.4)
by Solar Designer (http://freshmeat.net/users/solardiz/)
Wed, Jan 19th 2005 22:23
Security
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
System :: Systems Administration
About: The Openwall Linux kernel patch is a collection of security
"hardening" features for the Linux kernel. In addition to the new
features, some versions of the patch contain various security fixes. The
"hardening" features of the patch, while not a complete method of
protection, provide an extra layer of security against the easier ways to
exploit certain classes of vulnerabilities and/or reduce the impact of
those vulnerabilities. The patch can also add a little bit more privacy to
the system by restricting access to parts of /proc so that users may not
see what others are doing.
Changes: This release was updated to Linux 2.4.29, which added a number of
security fixes, including to the x86/SMP page fault handler (CAN-2005-0001)
and the uselib(2) (CAN-2004-1235) race conditions. The potential of these
bugs is a local root compromise. The uselib(2) bug did not affect default
builds of Linux kernels with the Openwall patch applied.

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: Spines is a software platform that enables rapid development,
experimentation, and easy deployment of overlay networks in the Internet.
It instantiates overlay nodes on the participating computers and creates
virtual links between them. In order to use Spines, applications use an
API very similar to the Unix Socket interface. The API provides TCP and
UDP-like functions for both reliable and best effort communication. Spines
can provide multicast capabilities through an interface similar to IP
Multicast.
Changes: This release increasd general usability with regular networking
applications. The API was changed to closely resemble the regular socket
interface. An option for UDP communication between applications and
overlay nodes was added. Real-Time link and routing protocols were added
for use in time-sensitive applications such as VoIP. Support for large
data packets was implemented along with end-to-end application flow
control for stream-based communication.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Wi.Ser is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables an
application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server Swing
app, or as a Web app without any change. It includes a mixed deployment
mode, which supports one server to serve Swing clients and Web clients at
the same time. The framework uses XML to define an application's GUI. It
provides a common widget-based, object-oriented programming interface for
Web and Swing GUIs, which prevents the developer from struggling with HTML
and HTTP or with the internals of Swing. For Swing client/server
applications the client/server split as well as the client/server
communication is handled transparently by the framework. The project
includes a GUI builder that is based on the framework's functionality
(screenshot, deployed as a Web/HTML application).
Changes: This release fixes some errors in the Web context menu and Web
menu. Major refactoring has been done. A new HTML renderer for partial
page refresh has been added, and a separate version of the framework has
been released under the terms of the GPL.
