[001] - Access_user Class 1.75
by olaf (http://freshmeat.net/users/olaf2/)
Thu, Apr 7th 2005 10:24
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: Access_user Class is an easy to use system for protecting pages and
registering users. The main features are user login, user registration,
page protection, forgotten password recovery, and email-based account
activation. The class is powered by MySQL and PHP sessions. Inside the
package are examples for all primary methods.
Changes: There is a security problem in older versions which could be
exploited if someone knows the login name of another user. This made it
possible to use the word "new" as password to login. This has been fixed.

Communications :: Ham Radio
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
About: Aldo is a Morse code tutor. It has four kinds of exercises: Classic
exercise, the Koch method, Callsign exercise, and exercises read from
files. In classic exercise, you must guess some random strings of
characters that Aldo plays in Morse code.
Changes: This release adds exercise feedback about copying success per
symbol, and exercise feedback about positions of copy mistakes. In Setup,
a hint about the current parameter value has been added to the input
prompt for all, except the skill parameters. In Setup prompts, pressing
Enter keeps the current parameter value. Koch method parameters are
controllable through Setup. The difficulty parameters of the Koch method
are persistent.

by Valery Reznic (http://freshmeat.net/users/valery_reznic/)
Thu, Apr 7th 2005 07:15
Software Development
System
About: Executable files may be linked statically or dynamically.
Dynamically linked executables use less disk space and memory, but
require appropriative dynamic libraries present in order to run. ELF
statifier make one executable file with no run-time dependencies from a

copied and run on another machine with no need for all of the libraries.
Changes: This release corrects a segfault which occurred if an executable
was statified on a system where the loader has no symbol table and has a
fixed load address (like Debian). A bug (race condition) which sometimes
prevented statifier from working was fixed. The dependency on readelf was
eliminated.

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: Gibraltar is a Debian GNU/Linux-based router/firewall distribution,
fully workable from a bootable, live CD-ROM. Log files can be stored on a
hard disk, and configuration data is stored on a USB mass storage media or
a floppy disk and kept on a RAM disk during run-time. Due to its Debian
base, a vast manifold of firewalling, routing, and proxy packages is
available. It comes with an intuitive, easy to use Web administration
interface and support, and is free to use for home users.
Changes: This release significantly improves the speed of the Web
interface, and solves a previous issue with license checks in
high-bandwidth cases. An important change is the introduction of the TCP
window tracking patch to the firewall code, which checks TCP connections
much more thoroughly than before. Another change is that FreeS/WAN has
been replaced with its successor Openswan, which uses compatible config
files, so this replacement should not need any changes in current
configurations.

[027] - Gwyddion 1.10 (Stable)
by David Necas (Yeti) (http://freshmeat.net/users/yeti2/)
Thu, Apr 7th 2005 12:18
Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
About: Gwyddion is a modular SPM (Scanning Probe Microsope) data
visualization and analysis tool. It can be used for all most frequently
used data processing operations including: leveling, false color plotting,
shading, filtering, denoising, data editing, integral transforms, grain
analysis, profile extraction, fractal analysis, and many more. The program
is primarily focused on SPM data analysis (e.g. data obtained from AFM,
STM, NSOM, and similar microscopes). However, it can also be used for
analyzing SEM (scaning electron microscopy) data or any other 2D data.
Changes: Import modules for five new file formats were added: Applied
Physics and Engineering data files, Image Metrology BCR and BCRF files,
RHK SPM32 files, Nanotec WSxM files, and Nanosurf EZD files. The SpmLab
module can read R6 files, and the Assing AFM module can save files. Two
basic nanoindentations modules were added: Nanoindent adjust and analyse.
Several bugs were fixed.

[031] - Iron Bars SHell 0.3a
by Attila Nagyidai (http://freshmeat.net/users/nagyat/)
Thu, Apr 7th 2005 19:23
Security
System :: Shells
About: Iron Bars SHell is a restricted Unix shell. The user can not step
out of, nor access, files outside the home directory. Two ASCII
configuration files are used for more control. The system administrator
can define which commands may be executed by the user. No other
executables are allowed. The admin also has the opportunity to define what
kind of files the user may create. If a file has a certain extension (such
as .mp3, .c, etc.), ibsh automatically erases it.
Changes: In this release, the admin has the opportunity to create a
separate cmds file for each user. This way the sysadmin has complete
control over sensitive applications, which should only be allowed to a
selected few. The admin also has the opportunity to create a separate
xtns file for each user. The extensions policy has been changed. Now both
globals.xtns and the user extension files will list the extensions that
are _allowed_ ! While the code for the search of illegal/ dangerous
material stored in user space is back, it will not erase any files any
more. Instead, it will remove all rights from that file, so it can not be
executed, or read. This is another "defense line" to stop the user to
execute programs, stored in user space. The access to all Linux binaries
and source code files stored in user space is now be blocked. Absolute
path for restricted users cannot be longer then 255 characters. All files
that are longer (with full path), will be renamed. There are also minor
bugfixes.

Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Jxp is a script processor/template-engine that can execute
template files containing text and Java code. It contains a parser to
parse the script file into an abstract syntax tree and a tree processor
that processes the syntax tree to execute the code using the reflection
API to produce output.
Changes: Functions are now able to access global variables. JxpParser was
updated to include static variable support. A page static variable feature
was implemented. File encoding support was added for CachingPageSource and
subclasses. JxpContext was added to encapsulate JxpPageSource and to add
default environment support. JxpProcessingContext was refactored not to be
JxpInvocable. The config digester was refactored to commons-java 1.5.0. An
unnecessary printing of exceptions in the generateException method was
removed, since that is supposed to be done by the application. File
reloading of FilePageSource when a parse exception occurs was fixed. A

[035] - jaxen 1.1-beta-4
by Elliotte Rusty Harold (http://freshmeat.net/users/elharo/)
Thu, Apr 7th 2005 07:39
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Jaxen is a universal XPath evaluation engine. It is currently
capable of executing XPath expressions against W3C DOM, JDOM, dom4j, and
XOM document trees.
Changes: Although still officially a beta, this release is a vast
improvement over 1.0, and all users are strongly encouraged to upgrade.
With a few small exceptions (most notably the deletion of ElectricXML
navigator), 1.1 is backwards compatible with code written to the 1.0 APIs.
Detailed changes include support for the lang() function. Return nodes are
queried in the correct document order. ancestor::* and ancestor-or-self::*
location steps no longer include the document node. Proper handling of NaN
was implemented. The mod operator works on floating point numbers.

[040] - Monica 3.0
by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
Thu, Apr 7th 2005 04:54

About: Monica is a monitor calibration tool using the FLTK library. It
works as frontend to xgamma to alter the gamma correction for XFree86 or
Xorg. The black point, gray, and color blocks help to find usable settings
for a target of 2.2 gamma, the Web, and sRGB standard. FLTK libs are not
needed for the binary.
Changes: Split-level color patches were added for setting individual
colors to a 2.2 gamma. A Black Point target was added, and color ramps
were removed because they were useless unless your color was way off.
Buttons were added alongside sliders for fine-tuning gamma adjustments. A

compilation warnings were eliminated, and more comments were added. The

Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
About: NcFTP Client (also known as NcFTP) is a set of application programs
implementing the File Transfer Protocol (FTP). It offers many ease-of-use
and performance enhancements over the stock ftp client.
Changes: The internal getline() and Duration() library functions were
renamed to gl_getline() and FTPDuration() to avoid namespace collisions
with glibc and Mac OS X libraries. Additional error response codes from
SITE UTIME are now recognized. If the server does not support setting
timestamps in MDTM, only one attempt is made. Control characters such as
NUL, CR, and LF are no longer allowed in FTP URLs to avoid command
injection. A problem where a timed-out transfer may have been detected but
still locked up the process was fixed. Small compatibility fixes were made

Changes: NcFTPd can now handle group entries whose lines in /etc/group are
longer than 511 characters. Support for alternative password encryption
algorithms (such as Blowfish) on Linux was improved. Compatibility fixes
were made for Solaris 10, HP-UX 10 and SunOS 4. New general.cf options
include allow-mls and count-only-files-owned-by-user-towards-quota. A user
is no longer automatically disconnected if a data connection failed as a
result of a firewalled PORT, but after a failure the user will be forced
to use PASV. A bug where a ncftpd_passwd database could be locked for

Thu, Apr 7th 2005 23:31
Text Processing :: General
About: otl is a Perl application that is a glorified search and replace
engine. The process is customizable; the application can be used to
generate markup such as HTML, XML, etc. from a text file with the user
able to customize the process to a substantial extent. While the program
is designed to be used to process outlines (e.g. lecture notes, etc.) and
generate nice HTML, it could be used in other contexts, as well by just
defining a new set of rules for the substitution process.
Changes: In this version, nested lists are processed better, and there is
improved documentation in the HOWTO . A GNU autoconf automake framework
was added so install is more of a no- brainer, a --pfile flag is now used
to indicate a parameter file, filename globbing is now dealt with, the
parameter file was modified so it specifies the file suffix to tag on
output file, diagnostic information that is written to stdout has been
trimmed, the project now checks to see if the file is already present
before overwriting, and a second script, "tag- remove", was added.

freelook, jumping, a client/server architecture with in-game joining, a
Quake-style console, a powerful language to describe game logic (Vavoom
C), and much more.
Changes: This version supports most of the Boom level editing features
along with many other line specials. A new OpenGL driver for Linux that
should fix problems with the mouse was implemented. Saving of a
cooperative game was also implemented, and bugfixes and improvements were

[063] - Worker 2.10.0
by BOOMERANG (http://freshmeat.net/users/boomerang/)
Thu, Apr 7th 2005 06:54
Desktop Environment :: File Managers
About: Worker is a file-manager for the X Window System with the classical
two panel interface. It features a fully graphical configuration, while
still allowing manual editing of the configuration file without the need
to restart Worker. Any external program can be integrated easily into the
GUI using buttons, hotkeys, and filetype-actions. Worker uses file
recognition by file content or by filename extension (or both). Different
actions with completely configurable commands can be assigned to each
filetype.
Changes: This release adds support for the virtual file system AVFS to
enter archives, FTP sites, and so on. There is a new option which prevents
Worker from entering the current directory when starting external programs.
Worker compiles with the upcoming gcc4, and a warning on 64-bit systems was
also fixed. Temporary files will now be stored in their own directory in
the tmp directory and $TMPDIR is now also honored. There are also some
other improvements and small fixes.
