[009] - chroot_safe 1.4
by Henrik Nordstrom (http://freshmeat.net/users/hno/)
Sun, Apr 10th 2005 18:24
Security
System :: Systems Administration
About: chroot_safe is a alternative method for chrooting dynamically
linked applications in a sane and safe manner. By using a little dynamic
linking trick it delays the chrooting until after dynamic linking has
completed, thereby eleminating the need to have a copy of the binary or
libraries within the chroot. This greatly simplifies the process of
chrooting an application, as you often do not need any files besides the
data files within the chroot. In addition to chrooting the application,
it also drops root privileges before allowing the application to start.
Changes: This release contains updated documentation better explaining the
purpose and function of this security tool.

[015] - Dictator 0.9.2
by kmh (http://freshmeat.net/users/kmh1979/)
Sun, Apr 10th 2005 21:14
Education
Information Management
Text Editors
About: Dictator is an on-screen reading application for text files that
was intended for use with The Gutenberg Project. The problem with these
texts is that reading them on screen is not particularly pleasant and
printing them out is worse. Dictator employs the Rapid Serial Visual
Projection (RSVP) method of displaying words consecutively in the same
place, at a user-controllable rate. In theory, this method prevents
unconscious re-reading of adjacent text and decreases the tendency of the
reader to oralise the text, allowing for increased reading speeds.
Changes: All colours and fonts are now customisable. Font dialogs are now
disabled in full-screen mode with wxPython 2.4 due to problems. A layout
bug was fixed in the bookmarks dialog. Rate change at very slow speeds was
fixed to avoid delayed response. Old configuration files are now ignored if
they are incompatible.

[027] - Generic Algorithms for Java 0.7
by David Hall (http://freshmeat.net/users/davidahall/)
Sun, Apr 10th 2005 10:30
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: JGA is a functors library useful for exploring and exploiting
functors as a design and implementation tool to reduce boilerplate coding.
A functor is an object that encapsulates a function or expression: it can
take arguments and produce results, as can any method, expression, or
function (in other languages that support functions). Unlike an
expression, as an object it can be passed as an argument without being
executed, it can be persisted to a database or file, it can be serialized
and passed from client to server (and back), and it can be instantiated at
runtime based on information unavailable at compile-time. This project
borrows the functors from C++ STL library, and extends them with functors
that are natural for Java programmers. It also borrows the notion that
basic functors implementing common operations can be profitably combined
into compound structures to implement more useful logic.
Changes: This release has support for Java 1.5.0_02. The new FunctorParser
(and its type safe extension GenericParser) allows functors to be described
using a Java-like syntax: the parser creates the functor that implements
the logic described in the expression. Hacker's Worksheet is the next
phase in the evolution of the Spreadsheet engine included in the prior
release. This application uses the FunctorParser to implement a
spreadsheet whose expression language looks like Java in most respects.

[063] - Random Music 0.3
by David Veldhuizen (http://freshmeat.net/users/dveldhuizen/)
Sun, Apr 10th 2005 07:51
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3
About: Random Music plays random MP3 tracks from your music collection. It
maintains a flat database of tracks, detailed genres, and weights, and
generates a weighted random playlist from the user-selected genres. The
ID3 and ID3v2 fields (title/artist/album), detailed genre, and weight
(0-9) for the currently-playing track can be edited, and tracks can be
removed from the playlist. For example, a user can select only tracks
with a minimum weight of 5 from the subgenres "Pop - 1970s" and "R&B -
1970s", and the playlist will adjust accordingly.
Changes: This release adds a preferences editor for specifying paths to
music collections and default selection properties, simplifying setup and
ongoing use. It also adds a File field to the Now Playing editor, which
allows files to be moved or renamed by editing the field. This is also
useful to identify tracks with no ID3 tags.

[064] - Rasqal RDF Query Library 0.9.8
by Dave Beckett (http://freshmeat.net/users/dajobe/)
Sun, Apr 10th 2005 10:43
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
About: Rasqal is a C library for querying RDF, supporting the RDQL and
SPARQL languages. It provides APIs for creating a query and parsing query
syntax. It features pluggable triple-store source and matching interfaces,
an engine for executing the queries and an API for manipulating results as
bindings. It uses the Raptor RDF parser to return triples from RDF content
and can alternatively work with the Redland RDF library's persistent triple
stores. It is portable across many POSIX systems.
Changes: SPARQL RDF query support was updated to the 2005-02-17 W3C draft.
Support for casting, data graphs, and graph patterns was added to the query
engine and API. Many query engine internal changes and improvements were
made.

[065] - ratpoison 1.4.0-beta4
by Shawn (http://freshmeat.net/users/sabetts/)
Sun, Apr 10th 2005 14:30
Desktop Environment :: Window Managers
About: Ratpoison is a simple window manager with no large library
dependencies, no fancy graphics, no window decorations, and no rodent
dependence. It is largely modeled after GNU Screen, which has done wonders
in the virtual terminal market. All interaction with the window manager is
done through keystrokes. ratpoison has a prefix map to minimize the key
clobbering that cripples EMACS and other quality pieces of software. All
windows are maximized and kept maximized to avoid wasting precious screen
space.
Changes: Several crash bugs have been fixed. The 'meta' command has been
improved.

[068] - ReleaseForge 0.7
by Phil Schwartz (http://freshmeat.net/users/phil_schwartz/)
Sun, Apr 10th 2005 18:24
About: ReleaseForge is a GUI application designed for project
administrators and release engineers of projects that are hosted at
SourceForge. It is intended to make it easier and faster to create a new
release and edit existing releases rather than using the SourceForge Web
interface. It streamlines the release effort by prompting you for
information regarding your new release (version info, change log, release
notes, files to include, etc). It then seamlessly negotiates with the
SourceForge Web server, creating your release, posting your release
notes/change log, uploading your files to the SourceForge FTP server,
selecting the files for inclusion in your release on the SourceForge Web
server, updating the file attributes of each of the files and then, if
appropriate, notifying monitoring users of the new release.
Changes: This release allows users to submit SourceForge project news.
This feature is available from the Actions menu in the main window.

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: Scilab is a numerical computation system similiar to Matlab or
Simulink. Scilab includes hundreds of mathematical functions, and programs
from various languages (such as C or Fortran) can be added interactively.
It has sophisticated data structures (including lists, polynomials,
rational functions, and linear systems), an interpreter, and a high-level
programming language. Scilab has been designed to be an open system where
the user can define new data types and operations on these data types by
using overloading. A number of toolboxes are available with the system.
Changes: There is a new interface to call Scilab from Java. The TCL
interface has been totally rewritten. There is an improved Scipad editor,
a new debugger, major graphics improvements, major Scicos improvements,
improved efficiency of sparse operators, improved matlab2sci translator,
new import of Excel files, and more. The source compiles on 64-bit
architectures, and the Windows version has been optimized.

[075] - Serving XML 0.2.0
by Daniel Parker (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielaparker/)
Sun, Apr 10th 2005 21:30
Database
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: Serving XML provides a pipeline language for declaratively
adapting content to XML, transforming it through a chain of XSLT
stylesheets and SAX filters, and producing a stream of output to a local
or remote destination. The accompanying console app supports reading
content as XML files, flat files, SQL queries, or SAX events, and writing
it as XML, HTML, PDF, or mail attachments. This software is especially
suitable for converting flat files to XML, with its support for variant
record types, multi-valued fields, namespaces, hierarchical grouping of
records, row-by-row validation with XML Schema, and much more. There is
also an API for embedding the software in a Java application.
Changes: This release added features for date conversion, regular
expression search and replace, and more general record-to-XML mappings.

properly now, and X fonts are finally configured correctly to display all
international letters. The slax-install graphical program was fixed and
heavily tested this time.

[078] - Task Coach 0.29
by Frank Niessink (http://freshmeat.net/users/fniessink/)
Sun, Apr 10th 2005 14:25
Office/Business :: Scheduling
About: Task Coach is a simple todo manager to manage personal tasks and
todo lists. It grew out of a frustration that well-known task managers,
such as those provided with Outlook or Lotus Notes, do not provide
facilities for composite tasks. Often, tasks and other things to do
consist of several activities. Task Coach is designed to deal with
composite tasks.
Changes: New effort in the context menu did not work in release 0.28. When
selecting 'View' -> 'Completed tasks' in the task tree, only completed root
tasks were hidden. What tab is active is now a persistent setting. The
'View' -> 'Tasks due before end of' menu has been reordered. A separate
'Budget' tab has been added to the task editor. The taskbar icon now
indicates whether task effort tracking is on. Effort is sorted from most
recent to least recent. The task/subtask separator in the task list view
has been changed to ' -> '.
