[013] - DB Solo 1.0.6
  by DB Solo (http://freshmeat.net/users/mhantula/)
  Wed, Jun 1st 2005 06:15

Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Systems Administration

About: DB Solo is a powerful database development and management tool for
developers and DBAs. It has an intuitive user interface that allows you to
explore and manage your database objects as well as execute ad-hoc queries.
It supports Oracle, MySQL, Sybase, DB2, Solid, and MS SQL Server. In
addition to viewing and managing objects such as schemas, tables, indexes,
views, tablespaces, users, roles, sessions, and stored procedures, you can
view, edit, print, and export data from tables or the results of queries.
You can also graphically view foreign key relationships.

Changes: A CREATE TABLE Script Generator for DB2 was added, which allows
you to produce CREATE TABLE statements based on your existing tables. This
allows you take tables in one database, generate the scripts, and then
create the same tables in a different database. Alternatively, you could
use the resulting scripts for documentation purposes or check them into
your source control system. Support for index and constraint script
generation was added, which allows you to select one or more constraints
or indexes from the index/constraint list and generate the ALTER TABLE
scripts based on the selected objects.

[015] - devialog 0.8.5
  by Jeff Yestrumskas (http://freshmeat.net/users/jeph/)
  Wed, Jun 1st 2005 07:42

Internet :: Log Analysis
Security
System :: Logging

About: devialog is a behavior/anomaly/signature-based syslog intrusion
detection system which can detect new, unknown attacks. It fits
comfortably in a heterogeneous Unix/Linux/*BSD environment at the core of
a central syslog server. devialog generates its own signatures and acts
upon anomalies as configured by the system administrator. In addition,
devialog can function as a traditional syslog parsing utility in which
known signatures trigger actions.

Changes: Two new fields were added to signatures: comments and line. The
comments field allows one to associate a comment with each signature. The
line field enables the original syslog message in which the signature is
based to be stored in the signature itself. A bug which would prevent
non-standard syslog formats from being parsed was fixed. This enabled
support for many more devices.

Changes: MVCs are activated by defect. Many new ISPs were taken into
account. UTF-8 should be posted correctly. This release has functions for
all the modems on the page Faq:ModemSupport (interwiki), and functions
with Linux kernel 2.6.11 (almost no testing of non-regression makes on
2.4.x). It corrects Linetype in /etc/eagle-usb/eagle-usb.conf being

About: The EarthMate Userland Library provides access to the USB device
via libusb and POSIX threads.

Changes: AC_FUNC_MALLOC was removed, as it was causing a linker problem on
Mac OS 10.4.1. A bug which was causing a segfault with gpsd if using the
"no wait" flag (-n) on Linux systems has been resolved. Along with other
numerous bug fixes to the library itself, the gpsd-2.25/emul release was
also updated to stable development source.

[019] - ezXML 0.8.4
  by Aaron Voisine (http://freshmeat.net/users/voisine/)
  Wed, Jun 1st 2005 04:31

Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: ezXML is a C library for parsing XML documents inspired by
simpleXML for PHP. As the name implies, it's easy to use. It's ideal for
parsing XML configuration files or REST Web service responses. It's also
fast and lightweight (less than 20k compiled).

Changes: This release is fixed to compile under Windows when the NOMMAP
make option is set. It also fixes a bug where ezxml_toxml() could
segfault if a tag offset is out of bounds. ezxml_add_child() now works
properly when tags are added out of order. Error messages have been
improved and now include line numbers. A memory leak when entity
references are shorter than their replacement text has been fixed. New
function macros ezxml_new_d(), ezxml_add_child_d(), ezxml_set_txt_d() and
ezxml_set_attr_d() have been added as wrappers that strdup() their
arguments.

About: GeboGebo is a wiki system written for tdbengine. It stores all data
in a local database structure and thus provides an indexed fulltext search.
It uses a simple syntax, and has user lists, pages history, a missing pages
list, and a recent changes list. Image and file upload are possible, but
can be disabled. This allows it to work as a small document management
system. A blacklist allows you to lock existing pages from being edited or
new pages from being created. It can also be run in static mode, where all
pages are additionally held as static HTML pages.

Changes: Images now can be resized manually by applying a second
parameter to them. This release automatically makes a static version of
the declared start page in a Wiki as index.html in the root directory. By
mistake one could use apostrophes and quotes in page names. This is not
allowed any more. Some additional minor bugs have been fixed, too.

Security
System :: Boot
System :: Diagnostics

About: INSERT (the Inside Security Rescue Toolkit) aims to be a
multi-functional, multi-purpose disaster recovery and network analysis
system. It boots from a credit card-sized CD-ROM and is basically a
stripped-down version of Knoppix. It features good hardware detection,
fluxbox, emelfm, links-hacked, ssh, tcpdump, nmap, chntpwd, and much more.
It provides full read-write support for NTFS partitions (using captive),
and the ClamAV virus scanner (including a fairly recent signature database
and a GUI). It also has a network boot facility.

Changes: This release now boots Linux kernel 2.6.11.6, which should
improve support for modern hardware (e.g. S-ATA) drastically. It is now
based on the release 3.8.2 of Knoppix, which means it uses UnionFS making
the complete system writable during execution, and now uses the KDrive
X-Servers (XVesa and XFbdev). This frees up a lot of space (approx. 12MB)
which in turn has been eaten up by the new kernel and loads of package
updates.

[039] - jpegpixi 1.1.0
  by Martin Dickopp (http://freshmeat.net/users/mdickopp/)
  Wed, Jun 1st 2005 06:56

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion

About: "Jpegpixi" is short for "JPEG pixel interpolator". It is a
command-line utility which interpolates pixels in JFIF images (commonly
refered to as "JPEG images"). This is useful to correct images from a
digital camera with CCD defects. Jpegpixi is unique in that it tries to
preserve the quality of the JFIF image as much as possible. Most graphics
programs decode JFIF images when they are loaded, and re-encode them when
they are saved, which results in an overall loss of quality. Jpegpixi, on
the other hand, does not decode and re-encode the image, but manipulates
the encoded image data, protecting the quality of the image as much as
possible.

Changes: In addition to hot pixels in an otherwise black image, the
jpeghotp program can now also find dead pixels in an otherwise white
image. The programs fail gracefully if the locale cannot be set.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: JUCE is an all-encompassing C++ class library for developing
cross-platform applications. It's particularly good for creating
highly-specialised user interfaces and for handling graphics and sound.
The intended users are developers who are building large, complex
applications in C++ and who would like to use just one clean, high-level
API rather than a bunch of different libraries for different purposes or
platforms. Its features include fully lightweight components with
transparency and effects, classes for strings, containers, XML, streams,
file handling, messaging, and event queues, vector graphics, a custom font
engine, image manipulation, OpenGL support, low-latency audio I/O using
CoreAudio, DSound and ASIO, audio buffers and nodes, MIDI file and event
manipulation, Internet streams, undo/redo support, and more.

Changes: Major new features in this release are the addition of new
algorithms to the cryptography classes: MD5, RSA, and Blowfish. There is
also new component layout code, support for OpenGL on Linux, and other
random goodies.

About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want and use a complex query
language with full boolean syntax and proximity operators, which is much
more elaborate than languages provided by Google, Altavista, etc. It can
be fed any sources, since its abstraction layer manages the search results
and their meta tags in a uniform way. In conjunction with the local process
scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan enables you to save your requests and
replay them later automatically: new results are sent through email in

About: MIMEDefang is a flexible MIME email scanner designed to do all
kinds of email processing, including anti-virus scanning, anti-spam
scanning, replacing parts of messages with URLs, adding boilerplate
disclaimers, and so on. It can alter or delete various parts of a MIME
message according to a Perl-based policy filter. It can also bounce
messages with unacceptable attachments and modify SMTP response codes on
the fly. It works with the Sendmail 8.11 and newer "Milter" API, which
makes it more flexible and efficient than procmail-based approaches.

Changes: References to $` and $' were removed from Perl code, because
using these variables can significantly slow down Perl regexp matching.
The fact that filter_relay cannot set the text of the SMTP reply code
because of Milter limitations has been documented.

  by Wray Buntine (http://freshmeat.net/users/wbuntine/)
  Wed, Jun 1st 2005 05:50

Scientific/Engineering

About: MPCA is a comprehensive suite of tools for doing discrete principal
components analysis on data sets of size 100Mb or more. Scaling is done
using sparse vectors, multi-threading, memory mapping, and other POSIX
tricks. Reports, file dumping utilities, and other utilities are included.
The general problem of discrete components analysis is variously called
grade of membership, PLSA, non-neg.matrix factorization, multinomial
admixtures, LDA, and multinomial PCA.

Changes: The software now compiles on Windows and on 64-bit AMD Opteron.
MPI runs and gets results, but is still buggy. The standard run-time
platform (ydin, mpserve, ugui, etc.) was redesigned, along with improved
directory structure and a new control module (mpctl). Rao-Blackwellized
Gibbs sampling (the Griffiths-Steyvers method) runs well. Gamma-Poisson
models (Canny, SIGIR 2004) run in Gibbs and mean-field, but prior
parameters are difficult and not documented. Topic-specific page rank
works well, but setup is not documented.

[058] - MyClient 3.0.0
  by PolarLava (http://freshmeat.net/users/PolarLava/)
  Wed, Jun 1st 2005 08:52

Database :: Front-Ends

About: MyClient is a simple and clean Web client interface for the MySQL
database. It runs with PHP's register_globals off and outputs validated
XHTML and CSS. Features include unlimited multiple tabbed interfaces,
connection to multiple databases, one-button table descriptions, one
button database switching, query save and load, and query results saving.
It is not a full featured administration tool, but rather a multiple
interface command client that improves upon the command line interface
using a Web-based implementation.

Changes: This version is a complete rewrite using an OOP methodology.
MyClient now utilizes an unlimited tabbed interface. The ability to
connect to multiple database sources on a tab by tab basis was added. All
output is now XHTML compliant and the display is configurable via valid
CSS. Additionally, MyClient now runs with PHP's register_globals disabled.

  Wed, Jun 1st 2005 23:10

System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: pasmal is a TCP/IP packet authentication system. When it receives a
sequence of ICMP or TCP packets to any port (open/closed), it will issue a
command on the server. It uses a "smokescreen frame" that features
encrypted authentication packets for avoiding sniffers, as well as a
TCP/UDP key for remotely activating the system. pasmal comes with an
optional Web-based administrator that can handle all its
filter/firewall/port knocking/encoding keys facilities. It also acts as an
intrusion detection system due to its sniffer capabilities.

Changes: A security bug in the non-encrypted port knocking sequencer was
fixed. Macros were added to the intrusion detection engine to firewall
with iptables, drop or log an attacker's IP address, and log network
connections, process information, and who is online and backup the modules
list, passwd, and system.map files during an intrusion.

  Wed, Jun 1st 2005 07:28

Desktop Environment :: Tools
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: SwiXAT is a Swing-based authoring tool for the quick and easy
development of GUI Java applications. It implements a true MVC framework
and uses XML to define the view (SwiXML is used as the XUL engine),
BeanShell as a scripting language for the controller, and JXPath as the
binding mechanism between the view and model. It provides a complete
environment in which it is possible to almost write an entire Java Swing
application without writing Java compiled code. The use of XPath makes it
very simple to traverse the object tree of the application's business
model.

Changes: The ability to import a script directly within a view has been
added. The mechanism to show the view in response to a command has been
made dynamic. The developer can now indicate relative paths for all the
resources, in order to easily relocate the entire application. Some bugs
related to context handling have been fixed. The documentation has been

documents by applying tags to them. Later, documents can be retrieved by
running queries on those tags (e.g., "show me all docs that deal with
'dogs' and 'cats'").

Utilities

About: fish, the friendly interactive shell is a shell that is focused on
interactive use, discoverability, and user friendliness. The design goal
of fish is to give the user a rich set of powerful features in a way that
is easy to discover, remember, and use. fish features a user-friendly and
powerful tab-completion, including descriptions of every completion,
tab-completion of strings with wildcards, and many completions for
specific commands. It also features an extensive and discoverable help
system. A special help command gives access to all the fish documentation
in your preferred Web browser. Other features include syntax highlighting
with extensive error checking, support for the X clipboard, smart terminal
handling based on terminfo, an easy to search, no duplicates history.

Changes: This release fixes the broken help command from version 1.10.
Other changes include bugfixes and improvements to the vared function,
bugfixes for running fish witout the xsel command installed, and multiple
minor bugs in the tab completion code. Changes to the build system in
version 1.9.2 mean that binary packages are now installed to /usr, and not
/usr/local. You may have to restart some services when upgrading from
versions prior to 1.9.2.

[093] - The Sleep Scripting Project 2.0-b7
  by Raphael Mudge (http://freshmeat.net/users/rsmudge/)
  Wed, Jun 1st 2005 14:55

Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Sleep is an embeddable scripting solution for Java applications. It
is heavily inspired by Perl with bits of Objective-C thrown in. Features
include function closures as first-class types, a unified I/O interface
for sockets/processes/files, and the ability to instantiate/query Java
objects. The Sleep Java API allows the language to be extended with new
constructs, operators, functions, and variable containers.

Changes: The integration documentation has been extended. This release
adds cmp and <=> operators, a map(&closure, array) function, and a
compile_closure("string") function. Error reporting has been enhanced in
places. Several bugs have been fixed.

[095] - tntnet 1.4.0pre2
  by Tommi Mäkitalo (http://freshmeat.net/users/tmaek/)
  Wed, Jun 1st 2005 15:09

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: Tntnet is a Web application server for generating Web applications
in C++. HTML pages with some additional tags for inclusion of C++ code are
compiled into shared libraries and served from tntnet. It resembles PHP,
JSP, or Mason, but the programming language used is C++, and the pages are
compiled into native code before serving. Tntnet is fully multithreaded and
supports http-keep-alive for best performance. Dynamic pages are served
about as fast as static pages in other Web servers, while creating Web
applications keeps simple.

Changes: The dependency on boost has been removed. This release uses the
POXIS-regex(3) API instead of boost-regex, which simplifies installation
and reduces binary size. This has no significant impact on the
performance. A memory leak from 1.4.0pre1 was fixed. A user's guide is
provided, as well as a yet unfinished configuration guide.

[098] - Unified I/O 2.3 beta
  by ak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imagero/)
  Wed, Jun 1st 2005 09:06

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Unified I/O is a high performance Java library that provides random
access to any data stream (even over HTTP), and gives a clear
differentiation between read only and read/write access. It features the
ability to access everything (files, streams, and all Java primitive
arrays) using one common interface, the ability to select (and change)
byte order, the ability to define a start offset and requested data
length, and HTTP transfer optimization (only requesting the required data
range). It has an extensible design. Unified I/O contains also following
utilities: BitInputStream, BitOutputStream, PackBits, an RLE4 and RLE8
decoder, a base64 codec implementation, and many others.

Changes: Memory management was added. Two possible strategies are
implemented. The first strategy is applicable regardless memory use:
either DROP_NEVER, in which buffers are never dropped, or
DROP_IMMEDIATELY, in which only one buffer is held in memory. The second
strategy is used if the buffer count exceeds the defined maximum:
DROP_RANDOM drops a randomly chosen buffer, DROP_LRU drops the least
recently used buffer, DROP_FIFO drops the least recently added buffer.

[100] - wavbreaker 0.6 (Stable)
  by Timothy Robinson (http://freshmeat.net/users/tdrobinson/)
  Wed, Jun 1st 2005 14:39

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: wavbreaker is a tool to take a wave file and break it up into
multiple wave files. It makes a clean break at the correct position to
burn the files to an audio CD without any dead space between the tracks.
There is also a commandline tool to merge wave files together (wavmerge).

Changes: ALSA support with the ability to configure ASA or OSS use. A
configuration option to prepend the file number as opposed to appending it
to the file name. The Save As dialog lets you select the directory to put
the new files. Uses the new GTK file dialogs if using GTK+ 2.3 or greater.
This release adds the ability to export to a TOC file, and save window and
pane sizes. A spinner widget to move the cursor marker by precise
increments has been added. A small bug has been fixed: when deleting a
track break, the durations were not updated in the list display. A file
closing bug has been fixed.
