by napi (http://freshmeat.net/users/napi/)
Thu, Jun 2nd 2005 07:27
Software Development :: Compilers
About: Axiomatic Multi-Platform C (AMPC) is a C IDE that generates Java
bytecode. It supports a very large subset of ANSI C (1989). It can be used
to develop new applications using C as well as port existing applications
written in C to run on JVM enabled devices. A JNI (JVM Native Interface)
feature is available for calling native C or C++ functions. Also, many
Java methods can be called from AMPC. The asm() directive can be used to
embed Jasmin assembly code within C source code.
Changes: Peephole optimization on the bytecode was added. A bug in

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Systems Administration
About: ClusterIt is a suite of software to allow easy maintenance of
large groups of machines. It does not provide a parallel programing
environment, but is meant to be utilized in managing one, or simply to
manage massive server farms. It includes such features as parallel rsh,

by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Thu, Jun 2nd 2005 12:49
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: The conary emerge feature has been restored to working order. A
regression handling changesets for distributed groups is fixed. This
release alerts users when directories change to symlinks and allows the
user to take appropriate action manually. Build log files are now tagged.

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Internet
Text Processing :: Filters
About: DSPAM is a server-side statistical anti-spam agent for Unix email
servers. It masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and
effectively filters spam using a combination of de-obfuscation techniques,
specialized algorithms, and statistical analysis. The result is an
administratively maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam tool. DSPAM has
yielded real-world success rates beyond 99.9% accuracy with less than a
0.01% chance of false positives.
Changes: A fix for LMTP when talking to dbmail has been made, whereby all
2xx responses (not just 250) are accepted as successful. A bug causing
some badly formatted messages to fail receiving a signature was fixed.
Delivery of false positives when using managed groups has been fixed.

Education
Information Management
About: The FreeMIS project is developing a free and better alternative to
the commercial MIS (management information system) products currently used
in Scottish high schools. It is currently running at North Berwick High
School, where is provides reporting to parents, tracking and target
setting, notifying the school office of unexplained absences from class
via email, and writing positive referrals (certificates which recognise
positive achievements by pupils).
Changes: The DHTML menus are now produced using Tigra rather than
JSCookmenu. Tigra is fully compatible with all modern browsers (JSCookmenu
was buggy on Macs). Several gaps in form processing have been plugged:
users can really change a pupil's register class, and staff details can be
edited. The printing of full reports to parents has been made more
efficient: the system does all the processing first (showing progress as
it does) before outputting to the browser.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: The Midgard Components Framework (also called MidCOM) is an
advanced component architecture which extends the Midgard Web content
management framework. It provides mechanisms for building a Web site using
components without much need for writing code to glue all this together.
The administration site gets built automatically by using those
components. Goodies like a caching engine and subrequests make site
building even easier.
Changes: This is the second release candidate for the upcoming 2.4.0
release. It fixes a major memory leak that appeared during reindexing and
photo bulk upload due to cyclic references in the MidCOM Datamanager. In
addition, several small problems have been resolved throughout the entire

[027] - Network Tracker 0.4.2
by Ali BASEL (http://freshmeat.net/users/alibasel/)
Thu, Jun 2nd 2005 12:51
System :: Networking
About: Network Tracker builds a table which records which user is
connected on which port of a switch by scanning SNMP-enabled devices. It
keeps the inventory of these devices up-to-date by scanning the network
regularly. Devices are also checked with ping and SNMP, and the user is
informed by email when any of the devices is not alive.
Changes: A new script "trackersnmp", which can shut-down/open the switch
port of the given IP/MAC, was added. With a new snortsam plugin
"snmp_interface_down", both projects are integrated. trackerdbgui gets an
optional MySQL username (and then asks for the password) which probably
has write access; otherwise, the default credentials in the
/etc/trackerdbgui.conf are used. All the SQL transactions are logged into
the /var/log/trackerdbgui.log file. Defining the running period of the MAC
tracking process was changed and that value is shown in the output of
tracker -s.

[041] - Tidydoc 0.1a
by Nicolas Burrus (http://freshmeat.net/users/nburrus/)
Thu, Jun 2nd 2005 13:32
Documentation
Information Management :: Document Repositories
About: The goal of tidydoc is to make documentation organization easier.
You can add documents to a pool of documents, give them the right names
and put them into the right directories, and generate a set of HTML pages
to browse your documents. It is written in Python in the spirit of
flexibility and easy tweaking, but with default behaviors that fit the
needs of most people. You can add documents using most transmission
protocols, such as a simple cp or through SSH with SCP. Tidydoc can then
generate HTML files indexing your documents. A simple XML file is required
for each document, including some information. These description files may
be generated by using tidydoc's upload facilities, but this is not
mandatory.

[042] - udp_copy2 9
by lacos (http://freshmeat.net/users/lacos/)

Internet
Utilities
About: This small tool consists of two executables, udp_send2 and
udp_recv2, implementing plaintext non-interactive data transfer over
UDP/IPv4 with a preset transfer rate. On lossy links, it yields better
throughput than TCP-based transfers. It may also be used for smooth user
space throttling. Usage documentation is provided by verbose command line
help. It is platform independent (Unix95 conformance is necessary). It
reads from/writes to pipes. Packet numbers are 64-bit wide (easily
increasible). It dedicates a mode to SNAT/MASQ (the receiver can initiate
transfer from behind a firewall). It features a very precise user space
packet scheduler. It handles SIGSTOP in a rational way. It only transfers
in one direction for one invocation. It needs and uses no synchronous I/O
multiplexing. Shell access is required on both ends.

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Filesystems
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
About: v9fs provides a Plan 9 9P2000 resource sharing protocol for the
Linux 2.6 kernel. This can be used to share files, devices, /proc, /sys,
etc. It also works with Plan 9 file servers, and can be used to mount
synthetic file systems from Plan 9 applications (see the plan9port
project).
Changes: The dentry routines were split out to vfs_dentry to reduce
vfs_inode size. Dynamic rpc struct allocation and associated slab were
eliminated. Vestigial address_space_operations were eliminated. The type
name convention was changed to the Linux kernel standard. A potential slab
leak in init_v9fs was removed. QID is modified to prevent inodes of 0 or 1.
The packet and mistruct slab alloc was changed to kmalloc. BUG() statements
in OOM cases were removed. More bogus kfree checks were cleaned up. Error
cases and redundant assignments in vfs_inode were cleaned up. The way
aname (remotename) is specified and allocated was changed.
