by Mike Chirico (http://souptonuts.sourceforge.net/chirico/)
Section: Tutorials
Sat, Jun 4th 2005 00:00
If you have a Gmail account and would like to use it in conjunction with
your personal computers, this tutorial will walk you through configuring
and installing the latest version of Postfix with SASL authentication and
TLS encryption necessary for connecting and relaying mail to
smtp.gmail.com and configuring fetchmail with STARTTLS to fetch messages
from your Gmail account to your local system. It will also discuss how to
forward mail to other computers and how to automatically backup copies of
email messages.

[001] - Apache::Logmonster 2.76
by Matt Simerson (http://freshmeat.net/users/mattsimerson/)

Internet :: Log Analysis
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
About: Apache::Logmonster is a tool to collect log files from multiple
Apache Web servers, split them based on the virtual host, sort the logs
into chronological order, and then pipe them into a log file analyzer of
your choice (Webalizer, http-analyze, AWstats, etc).
Changes: statsdir can now be an absolute path (such as /var/www/html). If
this is so, processor output will be stored in statsdir/vhost. Otherwise,
it works as it used to and output goes to vhost/statsdir. This is useful
if you have a machine other than the Web server that does the processing
and which does not have access to the vhost docroot. The changelog is now
maintained in Tinderbox instead of the POD format. The Web site was
updated to make it easier to navigate.

[003] - CleanSheets 1.3b
by Einar Pehrson (http://freshmeat.net/users/einarpehrson/)
Sat, Jun 4th 2005 06:36
Office/Business :: Financial :: Spreadsheet
Office/Business :: Office Suites
About: CleanSheets is a spreadsheet application that is both extensible
and platform-independent. It features a formula language that closely
resembles that of Microsoft Excel, and extensions for aiding end-user
programmers in developing correct spreadsheets. The application is written
in Java, and relies on ANTLR for generating the formula compiler and the
JFC/Swing JTable component for spreadsheet visualization.
Changes: This release adds support for cell style: font (family, style,
and size), alignment (horizontal and vertical), and color (foreground and
background). Other new features are persistent column and row dimensions,
propagation of copy, move, and delete operations to extensions, and
exporting of tab-separated string transferables. Bugs in copying and table
updates have been corrected.

Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering
About: As an alternative to the photochemistry and vibration-free settings
involved with regular holography, this program allows you to create a
transmission hologram using just a computer, a laser printer, and an
overhead transparency. This hologram will behave like one created using a
laser, and can be projected or viewed with a point source. You create a
computer-generated hologram using the MedCosm CGHMaker by specifying an
input file as either a GIF image, a JAVA program, or an XML "point-source"
list. Compute the interference fringes, print on a transparency, and enjoy
your hologram.
Changes: This release added tooltips and X/Y plate offset entry for
computing larger, multi-plate holograms. Minor internal changes were made
along with a total-ray calculation fix.

Sat, Jun 4th 2005 01:38
About: Fedora Directory Server is a full-featured LDAPv3 compliant server.
In addition to the standard LDAPv3 operations, it supports multi-master
replication, fully online configuration and administration, chaining,
virtual attributes, access control directives in the data, Virtual List
View, server-side sorting, SASL, TLS/SSL, and many other features. The
transactional Berkeley DB 4.2 is used as its data store and a full plug-in

by Emil Brink (http://freshmeat.net/users/emilbrink/)
Sat, Jun 4th 2005 15:08
Desktop Environment :: File Managers
About: gentoo is a file manager written in C. It uses the GTK+ toolkit,
and the two-pane concept, somewhat inspired by DOpus. gentoo strives to be
very configurable, and also to let you do all configuration from a GUI
within the program itself. Using advanced file typing and styling systems,
gentoo determines how to display files in its listings, and also how to act
on them. The package includes a set of over 120 unique handcrafted icons,
for many different types of files.
Changes: A bug with the overwrite confirmation dialog that made it crash
on Solaris was fixed. A new mode that makes a command require a selection
in order to run was added, which prevents using stdin and hanging. Dialogs
can now be positioned by your window manager. A SelectShell command that
(un)selects rows based on the result of running a shell command was added.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
About: Gmerlin is a set of multimedia libraries which comes with several
applications. Applications include a full featured media player with Gtk-2
GUI, an audio/video transcoder, a webcam application, and an ALSA mixer.
The libraries provide many low-level functions like handling of
uncompressed A/V streams or decoding a wide range of multimedia formats.
All libraries were written with good reusability in mind, so you can
easily write your own applications based on gmerlin libraries.
Changes: This release brings Audio CD support and makes the transcoder a
full featured CD ripper which encodes WAV, AAC, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, and FLAC.
On the decoding side, Vivo, Musepack, BMP-, and TIFF images are now
supported. Furthermore, files from anonymous FTP servers may now be played
without downloading them first. The installation became much simpler by
using two new tarballs, one with dependencies and one with all gmerlin
packages.

[018] - Internet DJ Console 0.1.1
by Stephen Fairchild (http://freshmeat.net/users/psoriasis/)
Sat, Jun 4th 2005 00:01
About: Internet DJ console makes it possible for people to connect to a
Shoutcast or Icecast server and be a DJ. It is intended to be something
that the bedroom DJ will want to and enjoy using, and not just be a tool
for streaming music to the Internet. It facilitates live radio shows with
DJ chatter and supports cross-fading for dance mixes.
Changes: De-essing was added to the compressor along with stereo mixing
for microphone channels. Mic channels can now be opened independently by
right clicking on the mic open button. Players now stream at full volume.
A headroom setting was added in the microphone preferences to reduce the
player volume when the mic is open. The compressor indicator now shows a
bar for left and right. A bug that caused compression to be applied twice
when using the same sound source for left and right microphone was fixed.
A bug that let the user set 0 in the noisegate timings causing a division
by zero was also fixed.

About: JFtp is a Swing Java network and file transfer client. It supports
FTP using its own FTP API and various other protocols like SMB, SFTP, NFS,
HTTP, and file I/O using third party APIs. It includes many advanced
features such as recursive directory up/download, browsing FTP servers
while transferring files, FTP resuming and queueing, browsing the LAN for
Windows shares, and more. The FTP API is separated from the GUI and can
also be used in third-party applications. It should ideally be launched in
a Web browser via Java Web Start (contained by the Java 1.4 plugin), but
can also be started locally.

About: JOE (Joe's own editor) has the feel of most IBM PC text editors:
The key-sequences are reminiscent of WordStar and Turbo-C. JOE is much
more powerful than those editors, however. JOE has all of the features a
UNIX user should expect: full use of termcap/terminfo, excellent screen
update optimizations, simple installation, and all of the UNIX-integration
features of VI.
Changes: The default background color can now be set. 256 color xterms are
now supported. The mouse can now resize windows and select menu entries.
During selection with the mouse, the window will auto-scroll when you go
past the edge. An xterm-patch tgat makes "-mouse" mode work better was
included. Syntax files were provided for ADA, AWK, COBOL, SED, Postscript,
and SQL. jpico was improved, and search now looks more like real pico. Grep

About: jsgal is a dynamic Web-based gallery. However, rather than

No offline generation of the Web pages is required; only a list of images
has to be maintained, which allows easy updating and extending of
galleries. This allows you to host dynamic galleries on servers without
scripting support, or on local filesystems (e.g. CD-ROMs).
