  Sun, Jun 5th 2005 12:06

Education
Software Development :: Documentation
System :: Systems Administration

About: The Advanced Bash Scripting Guide is both a reference and a
tutorial on shell scripting. This comprehensive book (the equivalent of
about 646 print pages) covers almost every aspect of shell scripting. It
contains over 300 profusely commented illustrative examples, and a number
of tables. Not just a shell scripting tutorial, this book also provides an
introduction to basic programming techniques, such as sorting and
recursion. It is well suited for either individual study or classroom use.

Changes: Several bugfixes. More new material has been added, including 5
new example scripts (among them a new spam hunter script). Coverage of a
few key commands has been expanded.

  by wedesoft (http://freshmeat.net/users/wedesoft/)
  Sun, Jun 5th 2005 08:28

Database :: Front-Ends

About: anymeal is a cookbook database front-end. It can handle more than
100,000 recipes, and can search recipes for a given set of ingredients. It
is designed to be lean and flexible.

Changes: The compiler for Mealmaster-recipes now tolerates overly long
ingredient lines (found in cases such as Mealmaster export of
B&S-software) as well as the multi-column subformat. The documentation
about how to convert text files from ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8 was invalid. The
appropriate command-line for doing this is "recode latin1..utf8
<textfile>".

[014] - Efax-gtk 3.0.2 (Stable)
  by Chris Vine (http://freshmeat.net/users/cvine/)
  Sun, Jun 5th 2005 04:16

About: Efax-gtk provides a GUI frontend for the efax fax program. It
interfaces with efax directly, replacing the scripts supplied with efax,
and can be used for receiving and sending faxes, and for viewing,
printing, and managing faxes which have been received and sent. It also
has a socket interface that provides a "virtual printer" for sending faxes
from word processors and similar programs, and can automatically e-mail a
received fax to a designated user and automatically print a received fax.

Changes: An option has been added to the mail_fax script to enable the
received fax to be emailed in PDF (Portable Document Format) as well as
PS (PostScript) formats. When the program exits it will clean up by also
closing any fax viewing program instance running. Implementation of fax
lists simplified and improved. Other cleanups were also made.

[019] - fwsnort 0.7.0
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Sun, Jun 5th 2005 20:38

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwsnort translates snort rules into an equivalent iptables ruleset.
By making use of the iptables string match module, fwsnort can detect
application layer signatures which exist in many snort rules. fwsnort adds
a --hex-string option to iptables, which allows snort rules that contain
hex characters to be input directly into iptables rulesets without
modification. In addition, fwsnort makes use of the IPTables::Parse Perl
module in order to (optionally) restrict the snort rule translation to
only those rules that specify traffic that could potentially be allowed
through an existing iptables policy.

Changes: This release adds support for the Snort pass action by using the
ACCEPT target, adds support for the Snort log action by using the ULOG
target (which can then log the packet via the pcap writer), adds support
for all fwsnort alerts to be logged via the ULOG target instead of the LOG
target, adds support for the "resp" keyword to allow it to drive the
Netfilter argument to the REJECT target, adds "pcre" to the unsupported
list (which knocks the fwsnort translation rate down to about 50% for
Snort-2.3 rules (pcre is heavily utilized)), and adds "priority" and "rev"
to comment lines.

  Sun, Jun 5th 2005 20:33

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML

About: GeSHi is a generic syntax highlighter for PHP that takes any source
code and highlights it in XHTML and CSS. It features case-sensitive or
insensitive highlighting, auto-caps/non-caps of any keyword, an unlimited
scope for styling, the use of CSS in which almost any aspect of the source
can be highlighted, the use of CSS classes to massively reduce the amount
of output code, function-to-URL capabilities, line numbering, and much
more. Over 30 languages are supported, including Java, C, PHP, HTML, CSS,
SQL, Pascal, C++, XML, ASP, and ASM.

Changes: Email addresses and URLs in highlighted source code are
automatically made into links. CSS support has been greatly improved, and
a language file added for CSS (so you can try highlighting CSS files on
the demo form). The get-keywords script has been improved with new options
and now uses its own copy of the PEAR files it needs. Context naming
support has been greatly improved, which will lead to an important
optimisation in speed and RAM usage in the next build.

[028] - JDBCImporter 0.67
  by Chris Nagy (http://freshmeat.net/users/cnagyxyz/)
  Sun, Jun 5th 2005 20:27

Database :: API
Utilities

About: JDBCImporter provides a consistent mechanism for importing data
from a file to a database, exporting data from a database to a file, and
generating data. It can run from the command line using an XML config
file or from inside an Ant build script. It works with CSV, fixed data,
and XML files and supports numbers, strings, and date/times as database
column types. Custom classes can be used to parse different file
formats, format column values into different file formats, translate
column values before importing or after exporting, or allocate or release
JDBC connections.

Changes: This release includes a fix for the way strings containing
whitespace are handled with respect to parsing numbers and dates. Several
new features were added: the ability to specify a file of SQL statements
that are executed before or after the import, the ability to specify a
custom export engine per entity, and the option to trim whitespace before
and after a column value (before it is passed to the import engine).

[034] - Kernel Mode Linux 2.4.31_001 (For Linux 2.4)
  by Toshiyuki Maeda (http://freshmeat.net/users/tosh/)
  Sun, Jun 5th 2005 05:56

System :: Operating System Kernels
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of
user programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can
access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user programs
are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege level), so
scheduling and paging are performed as usual. Although it seems dangerous,
the safety of the kernel can be ensured through such methods as static type
checking, software fault isolation, and so forth.

[039] - My Own Building System (MOBS) 2.1
  by Dervish D (http://freshmeat.net/users/dervishd/)
  Sun, Jun 5th 2005 08:18

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: MOBS is a building system a la autoconf, but a lot easier for both
developers and users. It's very easy to use and tune, even for
medium-sized projects. If you want your project to be configurable and
accept most "./configure" options but without the hassle and burden
autoconf and friends impose, this is for you. It has good documentation
and a low steep learning curve, and even has a bit of application
framework in order to ease development.

Changes: Due to a design flaw, "Makefile" must be called "Makefile.in"
now. This prevents a nasty situation where the end user could do "make"
before configuring the project with "0".

About: OpenNTPd is a portable implementation of the Network Time Protocol.
It provides the ability to sync the local clock to remote NTP servers and
can act as an NTP server itself, redistributing the local clock.

Changes: Handling of network error conditions has been improved: some
conditions that caused excessive CPU use on Linux or the server to shut
down are now handled correctly. Logging has be made quieter and small
adjustments will only be logged in debug mode. Query intervals are now

  Sun, Jun 5th 2005 04:17

System :: Systems Administration

About: pwdutils is a collection of utilities to manage the passwd and
shadow user information. The difference to the shadow suite is that these
utilities can also modify the information stored in NIS, NIS+, or LDAP.
PAM is used for user authentication and changing the pasword. It contains
passwd, chage, chfn, chsh, chpasswd, expiry, gpasswd, grpck, groupadd,
groupdel, groupmod, grpunconv, newgrp, pwck, pwconv, pwunconv, useradd,
userdel, usermod, vipw, and a daemon for changing the password on a remote

change passwords no matter where they are stored.

Changes: This release contains a lot of bugfixes like for useradd -D.
libnscd is now used to clear the nscd cache on Linux if an account or
group was modified. groupmod and usermod got new options, which allows to
remove and add single users from a singe group or list of groups. passwd
got a new option to read the password from stdin (for example from a

[058] - sg_utils and sg3_utils 1.15 (Linux 2.4)
  by Douglas Gilbert (http://freshmeat.net/users/dpgilbert/)
  Sun, Jun 5th 2005 04:09

About: sg_utils and sg3_utils are packages that contain tools for working
with devices that use the SCSI command set. They include variants of the
Unix dd command called sg_dd and sgp_dd that speed copies to, from, and
between SCSI disks and CDROMs. sg_map and sg_scan supply information about
SCSI devices and how they are related to other drivers. There are utilities
for timing and testing SCSI devices and retrieving mode and log page data.
The sg3_utils package is for the Linux 2.4 and 2.6 series, while sg_utils
is for the 2.2 series with some support for the 2.0 series.

Changes: This release cleans up the man pages, especially sg_format and
sg_reset. It makes various utilities more robust with non- sg device
nodes, and adds more sanity checking to sg_modes to detect and decode
malformed responses. It also extends sg_map to cope with sparse disk
device names. sg_ses update.

[065] - The Sleep Scripting Project 2.0-b8
  by Raphael Mudge (http://freshmeat.net/users/rsmudge/)
  Sun, Jun 5th 2005 05:53

Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Sleep is an embeddable scripting solution for Java applications. It
is heavily inspired by Perl with bits of Objective-C thrown in. Features
include function closures as first-class types, a unified I/O interface
for sockets/processes/files, and the ability to instantiate/query Java
objects. The Sleep Java API allows the language to be extended with new
constructs, operators, functions, and variable containers.

Changes: The interactive console was rewritten. A bug with tuple
assignment was fixed. The templates were reworked for the binary functions
bread, bwrite, pack, and unpack. A subarray(array, n, [m]) function for
extracting subarrays was added. This release is a candidate for Sleep
2.0-stable.

[066] - TinyCA 0.7.0 (TinyCA2)
  by Stephan Martin (http://freshmeat.net/users/stmartin/)
  Sun, Jun 5th 2005 23:29

Security

About: TinyCA is a simple GUI written in Perl-Gtk to manage a small
certification authority. It works as a frontend to OpenSSL. TinyCA lets
you manage x509 certificates. It is possible to export data in PEM or DER
format for use with servers, as PKCS#12 for use with clients, or as S/MIME
certificates for use with email programs. It is also possible to import
your own PKCS#10 requests and generate certificates from them. It also
lets you create and manage SubCAs for more complex setups. The most
important certificate extensions can be configured with the graphical
frontend. English, German, Spanish, and Czech translations are included.

Changes: The program was completely rewritten using Perl-Gtk2 bindings.
Existing CAs can be used with both versions without migrating any data.
