Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules

About: The Astro::Catalog module is an generic, object-oriented
astronomical catalogue. It provides access to the online USNO-A2 and Guide
Star Catalogues provided by ESO/ST-ECF, and additionally provides
read/write access to ARK CLUSTER format files.

Changes: This release includes many additional IO and Query classes. Among
other things, support has been added for FITS binary tables, STL, GaiaPick,
UKIRTBS, FINDOFF, Astrom, and SExtractor IO formats. This release will be
the last of the V3.x releases and is a check point release on the way to
V4 which, while it contains major feature enhancements, will probably
break backwards compatibility with preceding versions of the module.

[007] - Backup Manager 0.5.8
  by Alexis SUKRIEH (http://freshmeat.net/users/sukria/)
  Tue, Jun 7th 2005 10:34

About: Backup Manager is a small and basic tool for generating archives.
It is designed for those who don't want an obfuscated tool for making
tarballs. It can make tar, tar.gz, tar.bz, and zip archives. It can be run
in a parallel mode with different configuration files. Archives are kept
for a given number of days. Its upload system can use ftp or scp to
transfer the generated archives to a list of remote hosts. The
configuration file is very simple and basic.

Changes: This release fixes a major security hole. The archive repository
is now owned by a specific user and can only be read by the associated
group (both of which are customizable in the configuration file). This
prevent archives from being read by every user of the system. Upgrading is
strongly recommended. Moreover, some interesting features have been added:
logging to syslog is now possible and duplicate archives are now replaced
by symlinks to save disk space. Some minor bugfixes have also been done.

[009] - BioAPI 1.2
  by Michael R. Crusoe (http://freshmeat.net/users/khedron/)
  Tue, Jun 7th 2005 19:07

Software Development :: Libraries
System

About: The BioAPI Specification is intended to provide a high-level
generic biometric authentication model, one suited for any form of
biometric technology. It covers the basic functions of Enrollment,
Verification, and Identification, and includes a database interface to
allow a biometric service provider (BSP) to manage the Identification
population for optimum performance. It also provides primitives that allow
the application to manage the capture of samples on a client, and the
Enrollment, Verification, and Identification on a server. The
specification defines the Application Programming Interface and Service
Provider Interface for a standard biometric technology interface. It is
beyond the scope of this specification to define security requirements for
biometric applications and service providers, although some related
information is included by way of explanation of how the API is intended
to support good security practices. This is the reference implementation
of the standard.

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Monitoring

About: BixData is a system monitoring tool. It monitors services (HTTP,
ping, POP3, SMTP), performance, and processes. You can create critical
notifications and get email alerts for HTTP, ping, CPU, memory, and even
SMART diagnostics. A graphical console for Linux and Windows supports
real-time dynamic graphs. The runtime clients and server component are
lightweight and easy to set up, and run on Linux and Windows.

Changes: New enhancements to notifications provide more information in
email messages and alerts for services that are down. Important fixes for
BixServer on the Linux and Windows platform include better command
execution and more precise ping round trip and time-to-live times.

About: Bomns for Linux is a fast-paced multiplayer deathmatch arcade game.
Its gameplay is best described as "old-school," as it is based on the
popular text-based Bomns franchise. It has several modern conveniences,
however, such as a level editor and GTK2 configuration tool. Despite the
name, Bomns for Linux is quite portable and can easily be built on nearly
any platform.

Office/Business
Utilities

About: kchmviewer is a CHM (Winhelp) files viewer written in Qt/ KDE. It
can be build as a stand-alone Qt-based application or a KDE application.
The main point is compatibility with non-English CHM files, including most
international character sets. It has the features set of standard viewer:
search (including non-English CHMs), bookmarking, font size changing,
index/content browsing, codepage support, and more.

Changes: The most important feature of this release is added support for
complex search queries. Now you can search inside the whole CHM file using
queries like "redhat linux" +fedora -enterprise. Other important chages
are: better KDE support, KHTMLPart browser now supports link navigation,
copy/select, zooming, in-page search and correct encoding change; zoom and
scrollbar position is also stored for KHTMLPart; and ms-its links
(cross-links in CHM documents) are now supported correctly. A KDE version
can now run the standard browser to resolve external links.

  Tue, Jun 7th 2005 04:50

Software Development :: Build Tools
System :: Software Distribution Tools

About: Launch4j is a cross-platform tool for wrapping Java applications
distributed as jars in Windows native executables. The executable can be
configured to search for a certain JRE version or use a bundled one, and
it's possible to set runtime options, like the initial/max heap size. The
wrapper also provides better user experience through an application icon,
a native pre-JRE splash screen, a custom process name, and a Java download
page in case the appropriate JRE cannot be found. The increase in size of
the application is small.

Changes: An Ant task was added for better build integration. The 2.x
documentation was completed. Demo configuration files were converted to
the new XML format and updated. Issues with relative paths in the
configuration were fixed. The command line option that allowed 1.x import
was removed. That function is now available from the GUI only. Minor
bugfixes were made.

  Tue, Jun 7th 2005 04:06

Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing

About: The PCRE library is a set of functions that implement regular
expression pattern matching using the same syntax and semantics as Perl 5,
with just a few differences. The current implementation corresponds to Perl
5.005. PCRE is used by many programs, including Exim, Postfix, and PHP.

Changes: A second matching function that matches using a DFA algorithm was
added. It may have advantages in certain applications. New functionality
has been added to pcregrep, particularly the ability to do multi-line
searches. A second compiling interface returns an error number as well as
an error text. A C++ wrapper is now included in the distribution. A number
of minor changes and bugfixes were made.

[064] - Peeranha42 1.0.1 (Chess)
  by eecid (http://freshmeat.net/users/eecid/)
  Tue, Jun 7th 2005 10:08

About: Peeranha42 is an all-in-one software solution for P2P networks. The
software consists of two components, the P42 Client and the P42 Development
Kit. The client is the core of the software package and has a special
pluggable architecture. Furthermore, it builds up the interface between
the P2P network of JXTA and plugins using P2P networks. Due to the fact
that developing a P2P application is generally much harder and time
expensive than developing a simple client-server application, the client
offers an abstract network layer for easy development of P2P applications
in the form of P42 Plugins in minimum time. Some plugins are available for
download.

Changes: The chess rules for the checkmate function were fixed. Lots of
bugfixes were made in the group game mode. Necessary libraries are
automatically loaded from the current plugin-jar-file.

[069] - qmailtap 1.1
  by kbo (http://freshmeat.net/users/kbo/)
  Tue, Jun 7th 2005 22:15

About: Qmail tap allows system administrators to archive email messages
going to or from particular domains or users. The list of email addresses
to archive or tap are specified with a regex style syntax in a new control
file, control/taps. Each regex line also specifies where to send the
archived messages, so each domain can send their archive messages to a
different email address. Changes to the taps control file take effect on
the next message going through the queue. This code was written to help
satisfy regulatory requirements of US financial institutions who need to
keep archives of email. It also satisfies German and Swiss Email Service
Provider requirements.

Changes: This release adds support for setting an archive email address
for each regex style address to tap. This allows site administrators to
send each domain's archived emails to different archive addresses.

  Tue, Jun 7th 2005 00:43

Communications
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System

About: WANPIPE S-series is a family of intelligent multi-protocol WAN and
ADSL adapters that support data transfer rates up to 8Mbps. All WAN
protocols supported by WANPIPE are implemented in firmware and run on the
card. An advantage of an intelligent adapter is that it offloads the
system CPU and improves stability. By adding a Sangoma WAN/ADSL component
to the Linux kernel, one can create a powerful multi-T1/ADSL
router/firewall with proven reliability of Linux. Sangoma S-series cards
support an optional on board T1/E1 CSU/DSU that eliminates all external
components of a traditional routing solution: i.e. T1/E1 line can be
directly connected to the card. WANPIPE supports the following protocols,
ATM, ADSL, Frame Relay, PPP, MULTILINK PPP, CHDLC, X25(API), BitStreaming
(API), BiSync(API), and SDLC(API). Furthermore, WANPIPE supports custom
API development such as: Credit card verification, Voice-over IP,
Satellite Comm. All device drivers are part of the standard Linux Kernel
distribution.

Changes: Bugfixes were made for ATF TDMV A104 code, including RBS
Signalling and shutdown. Bugfixes were made for AFT TDMV driver for PRI
E1, Wink/RBS, and module unloading. Additional cards supported by TDMV
driver include the A101/2/4. The new AFT V.12 Firmware is required for
A104 clock sync support.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Testing

About: Web Performance Trainer is a load testing and stress testing tool
for Web servers. Its statistical analysis takes your site's performance
criteria, and determines the number of users your Web site can handle.
Because data is collected at the URL level, it not only identifies slow
Web pages, but identifies the particular part of the Web page that caused
the problem. Web Performance Trainer includes hard-to-find features such
as IP spoofing, client certificates, multiple simultaneous test cases,
authentication, SSL recording and playback, automated analysis, and more.

Changes: This release is recommended for all customers running high
numbers of hits/sec in their tests. The change increases the software's
capacity to handle tests that generate large numbers of errors (Issue
#163). It will be mostly visible when running a stress test (i.e. no
delays between requests and no bandwidth simulation). Issue #75 was also
fixed, which allows the parsing of blank hidden Form Field values.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Xapian is a Probabilistic Information Retrieval library. It's
written in C++, with bindings to Perl, Python, PHP, Java, and Tcl. It's an
adaptable toolkit to allow developers to add advanced indexing and search
facilities to their own applications. Included is Omega, a Web site search
app built with Xapian.

Changes: This release fixes a segmentation fault (introduced in 0.9.0)
when Query::get_terms_begin() is called on an empty Query object. This
mainfests itself in Omega when an empty query string is specified. On
platforms that use glibc, the library version of getopt is used rather
than including a distributed copy of the code. There are several
documentation improvements. The RPM packaging has been updated. This
release is the first to include a version of the new flint backend. By
default, this is enabled, but not used unless explicitly requested.

[091] - YACY 0.38
  by Michael Christen (http://freshmeat.net/users/Orbiter/)

Communications :: File Sharing
Information Management
Internet :: Name Service (DNS)

About: YACY is a distributed Web crawler and also a caching HTTP/HTTPS
proxy. Pages that pass through the proxy are indexed and can be searched
using a built-in HTTP server. YACY peers connect each other and form a
P2P-based index exchange network based on distributed hash tables.
Explicit web crawls can be done locally or collaboratively, forming a
global search and distributed indexing engine for the Web. It also
provides URL filtering with blacklist sharing among other proxy peers,
individual Web/servlet page hosting, a file sharing zone, and a database
engine.

Changes: The slow speed and memory organization were enhanced. Parsers for
numerous document formats (PDF, Word doc, RTF, RSS) were added.

[092] - Yada 0.9.0
  by dev/IT (http://freshmeat.net/users/devit/)

Database :: API

About: Yada is a C library that abstracts SQL databases, aiming at
allowing transparent use of multiple database types. To accomplish this,
it uses a compitability layer of functions to bind input and output
variables, prepare statements, and retrieve data. Its functionality and
concept are somewhat like Perl's DBI, but hopefully somewhat improved.

Changes: This release adds documentation, fixes minor bugs, overhauls the
transaction system, and makes error messages static. It does break binary
compatibility with previous versions, but has had its internal structure
reworked a bit to stop that from happening in the future.
