About: The abcMIDI suite consists of programs for turning ABC music files
into MIDI and vice versa, typesetting them as PostScript files, and
manipulate them in several ways.

Changes: midi2abc was modified to convert MIDI piano music using separate
voices for left and right hand. The resulting ABC files are greatly
improved.

[002] - Acovea 5.1.0
  by Scott Robert Ladd (http://freshmeat.net/users/ChaoticCoyote/)
  Wed, Jun 8th 2005 16:21

Software Development :: Testing

About: Acovea implements a genetic algorithm for finding the "best"
options for compiling programs with the GCC C and C++ compilers. "Best",
in this context, is defined as those options that produce the fastest
executable program from a given source code. The framework can be extended
to other programming languages and non-GCC compilers. It is also useful for
testing combinations of flags for pessimistic interactions, and for testing
the reliability of the compiler.

Changes: Minor bugfixes and internal improvements. Now supports
configuration file versioning and displays the tested version of the
target application. The Acovea-GTK GUI driver works correctly with
libsigc++ 2.0.

  by Alec Thomas (http://freshmeat.net/users/alecthomas/)
  Wed, Jun 8th 2005 02:18

System :: Archiving :: Packaging

About: bpkg is a utility that tries to simplify the process of trying out
new programs from source. For most packages, this can be as simple as
"bpkg <url or tarball>". bpkg will download, extract, configure, compile,
install, generate a package in your system's native format, and finally
integrate that package into your system's packaging system so that you can
remove it cleanly. It has auto-detection for Arch Linux, Slackware, Red
Hat, Gentoo, and SuSE (though not all packaging back-ends are complete).
bpkg is not intended as a replacement for normal packaging utilities.

Changes: Packaging support for Gentoo was added. The --detect-os argument
was added, which displays the OS bpkg thinks you are running. OS auto
detection in the Makefile was added. Installwatch will now be installed
along with bpkg if your OS does not include it. GNU sed is no longer
required. A check for source packages without a vesrion in their extracted
path was added. Various minor bugfixes were made.

[013] - ccbuild 0.3.5
  by A. Bram Neijt (http://freshmeat.net/users/bmm/)
  Wed, Jun 8th 2005 16:18

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: ccbuild finds all programs in the current directory (containing
"int main") and compiles them. For this, it reads the C++ source and looks
at all local and global includes. All C++ files surrounding local includes
are considered objects for the main program. The global includes lead to
compiler arguments. ccbuild splits these arguments for compilation and
linking, keeping the linking arguments back for later use. It should allow
development without any scripting and only simple reusable configuration.
Real deployment/distribution should still be done with autotools. As an
added bonus, it can create simple Makefiles and graph dependencies using
DOT (graphviz) graphs.

Changes: A few new command line options: precompilation of normal headers,
continue on compiler errors. Code cleanup and added support for ".H" as a
header extension (it was forgotten last time). More aggressive distclean
(totally source independent). Some documentation on the site on how
ccbuild code is organized.

[014] - Clean Slate Smalltalk 0.3.4
  by water (http://freshmeat.net/users/water451/)
  Wed, Jun 8th 2005 16:20

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Slate is a prototype-based object-oriented programming language
based on Self, CLOS, and Smalltalk. Slate syntax is Smalltalk-80-based,
rather than trying to be clever and complex. However, the language
semantics, environment, and run-time design are all much more powerful
than in traditional Smalltalk systems. The design goal is to bring
together many excellent existing ideas into one system, and to provide an
environment where design decisions in one area don't constrain others.

Changes: Improved debugging, better cross-platform support, optimized
space-usage of delegation slots and code blocks, added protocols to
numeric, string, sequence, stream libraries, and the extensible AutoLoader
facility for transparent loading of commonly-added features. Many bugs were
fixed and much code was cleaned up, clarified, and documented.

  Wed, Jun 8th 2005 18:09

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: The changemail protocol has been changed to support a
much-enhanced changemail script. It can now fetch sources via HTTPS while
building. By default, it declines to package files in /tmp and /var/tmp,
as well as CVS temporary files. The cvc rdiff command now recognizes and
displays shadows as such.

[019] - Data2XML 1.2
  by Blackmuzzle (http://freshmeat.net/users/Blackmuzzle/)
  Wed, Jun 8th 2005 22:02

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Data2XML is a quick JAXB-based tool for parsing
simple-to-moderately-complex input data into a flat XML representation. It
is meant to replace simple String.substring() operations and keyword
searches in Java by an easy-to-use XML-configured parser. It is
initialized with an XML configuration file that dictates the parsing
rules, and can then be used to convert an input data stream into XML. It
can search for the occurrence of certain substrings and cut the data into
smaller "Tokens" using various conditions like offset definitions. After a
value is read, it can be validated against a set of OR- and AND-connected
tests that check for the occurrence or non-occurrence of certain strings,
check values, etc.

Changes: Support for additional ValueValidators was added, including
length, isShorterThan, and isLongerThan.

  Wed, Jun 8th 2005 05:39

Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Systems Administration

About: DB Solo is a powerful database development and management tool for
developers and DBAs. It has an intuitive user interface that allows you to
explore and manage your database objects as well as execute ad-hoc queries.
It supports Oracle, MySQL, Sybase, DB2, Solid, and MS SQL Server. In
addition to viewing and managing objects such as schemas, tables, indexes,
views, tablespaces, users, roles, sessions, and stored procedures, you can
view, edit, print, and export data from tables or the results of queries.
You can also graphically view foreign key relationships.

Changes: A CREATE TABLE Script Generator for Sybase was added, which
allows you to produce CREATE TABLE statements based on your existing
tables. This allows you take tables in one database, generate the scripts,
and then create the same tables in a different database. Alternatively, you
could use the resulting scripts for documentation purposes or check them
into your source control system. Support for HTML Export was added, which
allows you to export table or view data as well as result sets of your
queries as HTML in addition to the standard CSV export.

About: dbsql2xml is Java tool for transforming a relational database into
hierarchical XML data. It requires JRE 5.0, JDBC, and an SQL DBMS.
dbsql2xml uses an XML document for mapping database tables and columns
into elements of an XML tree.

Changes: Exceptions in processing tables and columns are reported by
printing the values to stdout. Handling of null values was improved.
Global character encoding or per each column of each table was added,
which causes changes in XSD and mapping XML. More restrictions were added
into XSD to prevent errors.

[022] - DictEm 0.0.5
  by Aleksey Cheusov (http://freshmeat.net/users/vle/)
  Wed, Jun 8th 2005 11:32

About: DictEm is an extremely customizable DICT client for (X)Emacs. It
implements all functions of the client part of the DICT protocol
(RFC-2229). Unlike dictionary.el, it widely uses autocompletion that is
used for selecting a dictionary and search strategy. It provides several
hooks that may be used for buffer postprocessing. Built-in hyperlinking
and a highlighting mechanism are based on this ability. It supports the
mechanism of virtual dictionaries that can be used for grouping
dictionaries from different DICT servers into one virtual server.

Changes: This release adds a menu for hyperlinks. The history of DEFINE
buffers is kept, so you can press "l" to go to the previous buffer. A
postprocessing function removes the "XXX definition[s] found" header.
There are more examples of usage, and other changes.

[026] - GNU ddrescue 1.0 (Stable)
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Wed, Jun 8th 2005 07:13

System :: Recovery Tools

About: GNU ddrescue is a data recovery tool. It copies data from one file
or block device (hard disc, cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue
data in case of read errors. GNU ddrescue does not truncate the output
file if not asked to. So, every time you run it on the same output file,
it tries to fill in the gaps. The basic operation of GNU ddrescue is fully
automatic. That is, you don't have to wait for an error, stop the program,
read the log, run it in reverse mode, etc. If you use the logfile feature
of GNU ddrescue, the data is rescued very efficiently (only the needed
blocks are read). Also you can interrupt the rescue at any time and resume
it later at the same point.

Changes: A new logfile format makes multi-part rescue possible. The
logfile is saved to disk every 30 seconds, so in case of a crash you can
resume the rescue with little recopying. The logfile is now also saved in
case of write error on the outfile. A race condition has been fixed. This
bug could result in data not written to the output file but annotated in
the logfile if the computer crashes at the wrong moment.

[027] - GNU Ocrad 0.12 (Stable)
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Wed, Jun 8th 2005 07:14

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
Text Processing

About: Ocrad is the GNU OCR (Optical Character Recognition) program,
implemented as a filter and based on a feature extraction method. It reads
a bitmap image in PBM format and produces text in byte (8-bit) or UTF-8
formats. It also includes a layout analyzer that is able to separate the
columns or blocks of text normally found on printed pages. Ocrad can be
used as a stand-alone console application, or as a backend to other
programs.

Changes: A change in internal representation was made: the blockmap has
been eliminated. The text inside tables delimited by solid lines is now
recognized. Improvements in character recognition have been made. A
possible integer overflow when loading a PBM file has been fixed. The GPL
has been updated to version 2.3.

About: Gravit is a gravity simulator. It uses Newtonian physics using the
Barnes-Hut N-body algorithm. Although the main goal of Gravit is to be as
accurate as possible, it also creates beautiful looking gravity patterns.
It records the history of each particle so that it can animate and display
a path of its travels. At any stage you can rotate your view in 3D and zoom
in and out. Gravit uses OpenGL, Lua, SDL, SDL_ttf, and SDL_image.

Changes: Stereoscopic mode was fixed to show simulation in the center of
your view. The old Makefile is included and autoconf now uses sdl-config.
Many bugfixes were made.

[057] - Python milter 0.8.0
  by Stuart D. Gathman (http://freshmeat.net/users/stuartdgathman/)
  Wed, Jun 8th 2005 16:09

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: The milter module for Python provides a python interface to
Sendmail's libmilter that exploits all its features. Milters can run on
the same machine as sendmail, or another machine. The milter can even run
with a different operating system or processor than sendmail. Sendmail
talks to the milter via a local or internet socket, and keeps the milter
informed of events as it processes a mail connection. At any point, the
milter can cut the conversation short by telling sendmail to ACCEPT,
REJECT, or DISCARD the message. After receiving a complete message from
sendmail, the milter can again REJECT or DISCARD it, but it can also
ACCEPT it with changes to the headers or body.

Changes: Supports Python 2.4. The Milter module has been moved to a
subpackage. A DSN option is provided for the three strikes rule and SPF
SOFTFAIL. dynip has been moved to the Milter subpackage. SPF unknown
mechanism list not cleared has been fixed. Banned extensions are
configurable. There is an option to scan zip files for bad extensions.
This release will properly log pydspam exceptions.

[058] - Raptor RDF Parser Toolkit 1.4.7
  by Dave Beckett (http://freshmeat.net/users/dajobe/)
  Wed, Jun 8th 2005 07:32

Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: Raptor is a C library providing a set of parsers and serializers
for Resource Description Framework (RDF) triples by parsing syntaxes into
RDF triples and serializing triples into a syntax. The parsers support
RDF/XML, N-Triples, Turtle, XML RSS, and Atom 0.3 via RSS tag soup. The
serializers support RDF/XML, N-Triples, and RSS 1.0. Raptor handles
RDF/XML as used by RDF applications such as RSS 1.0, FOAF, DOAP, Dublin
Core, and OWL. It can use either expat or libxml2 for XML parsing, libcurl
when available for URI retrieval, and is portable to many POSIX systems.

Changes: Fixes were made for crashes in the RSS tag soup parser and
serializer and the RDF/XML serializers.

[060] - RDVIS 20050608
  by Kristof Beyls (http://freshmeat.net/users/kbeyls/)
  Wed, Jun 8th 2005 11:22

Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: The RDVIS tool helps programmers pin-point the sources of cache
misses and poor temporal locality in their source code. The visualization
often directs the experienced programmer towards the necessary program
transformations within a few minutes. The tool consists of two parts: a
GUI that visualizes the low temporal locality patterns, and a patched GCC
 compiler to extract the low-locality patterns from programs.

Changes: This release adds "Compare to other .rdvis.zip-file" to the file
menu, which generates a histogram plot of the reuse distances of two
different executions of a program.

[061] - Redet 6.6
  by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
  Wed, Jun 8th 2005 02:01

Software Development
Text Processing :: Linguistic

About: Redet (Regular Expression Development and Execution Tool) is a tool
for developing and executing regular expressions using any of more than 20
search programs, editors, and programming languages. For each program in
each locale a palette showing the available regular expression constructs
is provided. The features of each program are determined by running a test
suite, which guarantees that they will be correct for the particular
program version in use and for the user's locale. The locale may be
changed without exiting Redet. Selections from the palette may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. Definitions can be
added to the palette via an initialization file. The regular expressions
executed are recorded in a history list, from which entries may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. This allows complex
regular expressions to be developed in pieces. When a suitable regular
expression has been constructed it may be saved to a file. Named character
classes may be defined in a file or entered interactively. As long as the
underlying program supports Unicode, Redet fully supports UTF-8 Unicode.

Changes: The Configure menu has been reorganized. The Python programs have
been rewritten to reduce memory usage when processing large amounts of
input. A couple of minor bugs have been fixed.

About: X-Plane is a flight simulator that reads in the geometric shape of
any aircraft and then figures out how that aircraft will fly. It does this
via an engineering process called "blade element theory", which involves
breaking the aircraft down into many small elements and then finding the
forces on each little element many times per second. These forces are then
converted into accelerations, which are then integrated to velocities and
positions. This gives X-Plane the most realistic flight model available
for personal computers.
