[003] - arpalert 0.4.3 (Release Candidate)
  by Thierry FOURNIER (http://freshmeat.net/users/fourniert/)
  Thu, Jun 9th 2005 14:25

Security
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: arpalert uses ARP address monitoring to help prevent unauthorized
connections on the local network. If an illegal connection is detected, a
program or script is launched, which could be used to send an alert
message, for example.

Changes: A little function in unauthorized request detection: the target
255.255.255.255 allows you to ignore a MAC address.

  by Sasha Vasko (http://freshmeat.net/users/sashav/)
  Thu, Jun 9th 2005 10:13

Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals

About: aterm (AfterStep term) is an xterm replacement, based on rxvt
v.2.4.8. It includes features such as NeXT style scrollbar, resource
efficient pseudo-transparency. It understands root background changes by
AfterStep Pager and Esetroot. The primary goal of aterm is to provide cool
visual features without resource consumption. It can be compiled to utilize
AfterStep's libasimage for wider image format support.

Changes: This release reimplements support for scaling background images
and fixes detection and usage of standalone libAfterImage for background
images.

[005] - Barcode Writer in Pure Postscript 2005-06-09
  by Terry Burton (http://freshmeat.net/users/terryburton/)
  Thu, Jun 9th 2005 03:51

Information Management
Multimedia :: Graphics
Office/Business :: Financial :: Point-Of-Sale

About: Barcode Writer in Pure Postscript implements the printing of many
barcode formats entirely within level 2 PostScript, so that the process of
converting the input string into the printed output is performed by the
printer itself. This avoids the need to re-implement the barcode
generation process whenever your language needs change. The project
supports most major barcode formats including EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E,
ISBN, Code 128 (A, B, and C), Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5, Postnet, Code 2
of 5, and Codabar.

Changes: A minor fix was made to the positioning of human readable text
within the Code 128 symbology.

System :: Boot :: Init

About: cinit is a fast executing, small, and simple init with support for
profiles. It is aware of dependencies and executes processes in parallel.

Changes: "Need" dependencies had a small bug where one service would not
wait for the needed service if some other process is already working on
it. Another bug in which umount had the wrong arguments was fixed. A
missing call to sync() before umount was added. A bug in the profile code
where cinit accepted cprofile=profile but didn't care about it was fixed.
The shipped tarball was updated to support openssh and fsck for the root
device. cinit.reboot was added to the reboot system (in bin/). More
documentation was added.

  Thu, Jun 9th 2005 16:26

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: Don Ceferino Hazaņa is a game similar to Super Pang. You are
attacked by little green balls which are bouncing around and which you
have to kill with your knife. Your knife, however, is limited to being
thrown upwards, so you have to get under the balls to kill them. Even
worse, if you "kill" a large ball, it doesn't just vanish, but breaks
apart into two smaller balls. Levels consist of little platforms connected
by ladders, so you can go up and down or find cover if needed.

[015] - Fityk 0.5.0
  by Marcin Wojdyr (http://freshmeat.net/users/wojdyr/)
  Thu, Jun 9th 2005 10:56

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Chemistry
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: Fityk is nonlinear curve-fitting and data analysis software. It
allows data visualization, separation of overlapping peaks, and least
squares fitting using standard Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, a genetic
algorithm, or Nelder-Mead simplex method. It only knows about common
bell-shaped functions (Gaussian, Loretzian, Pearson 7, Voigt,
Pseudo-Voigt) and polynomials, but more sophisticated formulae can be
easily added if necessary. It also enables background substracting, data
calibration, and task automation with a simple script language. It is
being developed to analyze powder diffraction patterns, but is also used
in chromatography, photoluminescence, infrared, and Raman spectroscopy,
and can be used to fit analytical functions to any kind of data. The most
similar program to Fityk is probably PeakFit.

Changes: This release adds data editing and transformations (eg.
integration).

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Scientific/Engineering :: Geographical

About: The GeoServer project is a full transactional Java (J2EE)
implementation of the OpenGIS Consortium's Web Feature Server (WFS)
specification with a completely integrated Web Map Server (WMS). Users who
would like to access and modify their geographic data over the Internet
using flexible, industry-approved standards should take a look at
GeoServer or one of the existing commercial Web Feature Servers. It is
built as a thin layer on top of the excellent GeoTools2 GIS toolkit, and
includes a STRUTs-based Web administration interface for easy
configuration.

Changes: This version has the same capabilities as the GeoServer 1.3-RC1,
but with new support for coverages. It implements a large portion of the
WCS specification. The ArcGrid, GeoTIFF, Image, and GRIB formats are
supported. It features an easy-to-use, Web-based interface for data
configuration and sharing through WCS and WMS.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML

About: GeSHi is a generic syntax highlighter for PHP that takes any source
code and highlights it in XHTML and CSS. It features case-sensitive or
insensitive highlighting, auto-caps/non-caps of any keyword, an unlimited
scope for styling, the use of CSS in which almost any aspect of the source
can be highlighted, the use of CSS classes to massively reduce the amount
of output code, function-to-URL capabilities, line numbering, and much
more. Over 30 languages are supported, including Java, C, PHP, HTML, CSS,
SQL, Pascal, C++, XML, ASP, and ASM.

Changes: HTML, Javascript, and PHP5 are now supported languages. A bug in
the support of case insensitive keywords was fixed. Now every element of
parsed code should have the correct name. (Changes were made to make it
both easier and more reliable to name contexts.)

About: Hogmem is a program for managing memory status in development or

prevent the VMM from swapping the reserved memory to disk. This can be
beneficial in various test cases where resource limits are not a
meaningful method for memory status management.

Changes: Memory configuration is read from the kernel, not from the proc
filesystem. By default, the application allocates 25% of system memory.
This behaviour can be overwritten by setting the limit from the command
line. The default installation path has been changed to /usr/sbin.

[029] - Jaikoz 1.1
  by paul taylor (http://freshmeat.net/users/paultaylor1/)
  Thu, Jun 9th 2005 16:25

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Editors

About: Jaikoz is an audio tagger for ID3 and MP3. It has many advanced
automation features, making it quick and easy to correct the meta-data in
your audio tags. It works especially well with large music collections. It
uses a spreadsheet view to allow you to edit information more quickly than
other applications, and provides many autoformatting tasks that do most of
the work for you. For example, it compares your MP3s to each other to help
correct missing information or spelling mistakes.

Changes: Jaikoz now supports updating meta-information from the
MusicBrainz Database. It uses the existing metadata and a value calculated
from the actual music to compare it against MusicBrainz on a track-by-track
basis, then updates the data based on matching records. This is extremely
accurate, and because it is fully automated, you can correct 99% of your
tracks in one evening unattended.

About: Java Security Component Framework (JSCF) is a pluggable security
component system with a JDBC-like interface. It allows connections to be
made to registered security components with defined operations used mainly
for mail, such as encrypting, decrypting, verifying, and signing streams.
An implementation that works with the popular gpg program is included.

Changes: The release included a new URL style for connecting to the
included GPG component to avoid problems under Windows, completely
rewritten communications with the external gpg process to avoid hanging
during the encryption of large mails and to improve performance, and
updates in the documentation to clarify the URL change. More test cases

[031] - JFCML 0.9.5

  Thu, Jun 9th 2005 22:48

Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: User Interfaces
Text Processing :: Markup

About: JFCML (JFC/Swing XML Markup Language) is an XUL and embedded
scripting solution for Java. It is a markup language which supports not
only AWT and Swing, but any class accessible to Java's ClassLoader. JFCML
additionally offers scripting support through the Bean Scripting
Framework, enabling the user to dynamically choose from most major
scripting languages. JFCML also offers its own scripting solution,
JFCMLScript. This is a tiny yet powerful script evalution service which is
also applet-friendly. Using JFCML, the user can construct an entire Java
application without writing a single line of Java.

Changes: Listener support was improved. "Proxy" listeners are provided to
be used as any listener type. The user may specify actions for each method
provided by the specified interface, and JFCML will use BSF to evaluate
them. Previously, the creation of these proxy classes was delegated to the
scripting language. Extendability was improved. An interface describing the
configuration of the JFCML interpreter is defined by JFCMLConfiguration.
The JFCMLWindowFactory uses instances of this interface to obtain a
configured TagHandler and SAXParser. This provides a single, overridable
configuration point for JFCML.

Information Management :: Records Management

About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex query
language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to search through
pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language enables users to
perform far more complex queries than what common search engines currently
support. It can be fed any custom sources, since its abstraction layer
manages the search results and their meta tags in a uniform way. In
conjunction with the local process scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan
enables you to save your requests and replay them later automatically; new
results are sent through email and RSS in realtime. Magellan also provides
full anonymity through smart multi-proxy support.

Changes: The Google Web driver has been updated in order to parse the
output of the search engine correctly, since the output has been slightly
modified recently.

[065] - Rasqal RDF Query Library 0.9.10
  by Dave Beckett (http://freshmeat.net/users/dajobe/)
  Thu, Jun 9th 2005 10:09

Database :: Database Engines/Servers

About: Rasqal is a C library for querying RDF, supporting the RDQL and
SPARQL languages. It provides APIs for creating a query and parsing query
syntax. It features pluggable triple-store source and matching interfaces,
an engine for executing the queries and an API for manipulating results as
bindings. It uses the Raptor RDF parser to return triples from RDF content
and can alternatively work with the Redland RDF library's persistent triple
stores. It is portable across many POSIX systems.

Changes: The query engine has been updated to support sorting query
results implementing SPARQL ORDER BY (no duplicates are removed yet), and
the SPARQL query language support has been updated for some recent syntax
changes.

[070] - Synopsis 0.8
  by Stefan Seefeld (http://freshmeat.net/users/stefans/)
  Thu, Jun 9th 2005 22:08

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Documentation

About: Synopsis is a multi-language source code introspection tool that
provides a variety of representations for the parsed code to enable
further processing such as documentation extraction, reverse engineering,
and source-to-source translation. It provides a framework of C++ and
Python APIs to access these representations and allows Processor objects
to be defined and composed into processing pipelines, making this
framework very flexible and extensible.

Changes: While this release mainly focusses on an internal redesign, there
are still a number of major enhancements and new features. Synopsis now
contains a new C parser. Lots of bugfixes were made to the C++ parser. A
number of bugfixes were made to the HTML formatter. Synopsis' internals
have been largely redesigned to eventually expose public C++ and Python
APIs to the lower-level code representations such as parse trees or symbol
tables.

[077] - wgrab http file fetcher 1.1.2
  by Elden Armbrust (http://freshmeat.net/users/earmbrust/)
  Thu, Jun 9th 2005 22:38

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: wgrab is an HTTP file fetcher similar to wget that is designed to
be small, fast, and cross-platform compatible natively. The compiled wgrab
is approximately 1/10th the size of wget, making it ideal for distributions
like DSL and other miniature distributions.

Changes: Support for 404 error messages was added, and 404 documents will
not be downloaded unless the -i/--ignore-errors command line switch is
given. The problem with the executable being larger than 20k was fixed by
using the strip utility to remove debugging information from the standard
executable created by install.sh. Support for standardized port
identification (host.com:port) was added. Experimental support for
multiple HTTP versions was added.

[078] - xajax 0.1 beta

  Thu, Jun 9th 2005 04:04

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: xajax is a PHP class library for easily creating powerful PHP-
driven, Web-based AJAX applications. Developers can use the library to
asynchronously call PHP functions and update the content of your a
Webpage without reloading the page. It is designed to be easy to
implement. To keep the presentation markup relatively clean and avoid
having to create a lot of JavaScript functions to update the Web content,
it allows you to control a great deal of the content through XML responses
from PHP functions.

Changes: Request data and XML responses are now UTF-8 encoded to support
internationalization. The approach using a single request method for all
requests in your application was abandoned. Now, each PHP function you add
to xajax can specify which request method to use for that particular
function (POST/GET). The request type defaults to POST unless otherwise
indicated in the second argument to the $xajax->addFunction() method. The
$sRequestType parameter to the xajax constructor was removed accordingly.
Other changes were also made.

About: ZWord is a qte / qpe based app that produces crossword solutions
based on partial words with '?' wildcard charactors. It also generates
anagrams from all or partial letters of a known length word, again using
wildcards if required. It uses large custom dawg dictionaries drawn from
Webster's Dictionary, The Oxford English Dictionary, The MOBY project
Crossword Dictionary, and various word lists covering names and places,
plus less common English usage words. Despite the size of the
dictionaries, the search algorithms are very fast and the binary tree
structure of the dawgs makes for a very targeted and fast search. It also
offers integration with bedic format dictionaries (if installed) for word
lookups and definitions in a popup window.
