  Mon, Jun 13th 2005 08:31

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Systems Administration

About: Cluster SSH opens terminal windows with connections to specified
hosts and an administration console. Any text typed into the
administration console is replicated to all other connected and active
windows. This tool is intended for, but not limited to, cluster
administration where the same configuration or commands must be run on
each node within the cluster. Performing these commands all at once via
this tool ensures all nodes are kept in sync.

Changes: This release adds custom cluster files, removes window flickering
when retiling, and updates the man page for both old and new options.

[015] - Conary 0.60.9
  by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
  Mon, Jun 13th 2005 11:39

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: Automatically determines the main directory for packages when
cooking recipes. A new commitaction script has been added that loads
arbitrary modules, including an existing module that provides changemail
service (based on the previous changemail script).

[016] - Cowloop 2.15
  by AT Consultancy (http://freshmeat.net/users/atconsultancy/)
  Mon, Jun 13th 2005 01:30

About: The cowloop-driver is a copy-on-write loop driver (block device)
which can be used on top of any other block driver. It shields the lower
driver from any write access. Instead, it diverts all write-accesses to an
arbitrary regular file, called the cowfile. When a modified block is read
again later on, the cowloop-driver obtains the block from the cowfile,
while non-modified blocks are obtained from the original read-only device.
This mechanism allows block-devices to be used in a read-write fashion
without modifying the underlying block-device itself.

Changes: A 'cowmerge' command that merges all modifications stored in a
cowfile into the base file (rdofile) was added. It is possible now to open
the same cowdevice more than once to allow filesystems like reiserfs and
xfs to be used on a cowdevice.

[017] - DSPAM 3.4.8
  by Nuclear Elephant (http://freshmeat.net/users/jzdziarski/)
  Mon, Jun 13th 2005 08:27

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Internet
Text Processing :: Filters

About: DSPAM is a server-side statistical anti-spam agent for Unix email
servers. It masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and
effectively filters spam using a combination of de-obfuscation techniques,
specialized algorithms, and statistical analysis. The result is an
administratively maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam tool. DSPAM has
yielded real-world success rates beyond 99.9% accuracy with less than a
0.01% chance of false positives.

Changes: This release corrects some minor decoding annoyances, fixes
managed groups, and adds quoting for dots on single lines, which some
MTAs/LDAs interpret as a message termination character.

  Mon, Jun 13th 2005 16:38

Games/Entertainment :: Multi-User Dungeons (MUD)
Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: ErisMUD is a MUD/MOO server/engine written in Python and supports
many features: it has rooms, NPCs, items, player creation, ANSI colors,
etc. SQLite is used to store the data, so no files are required for
building (unlike LPMUD). Short and easy internal commands take care of the
development and maintenance. The only things not implemented are skills,
combat, quests, levelling, etc. These are left to users so as to make sure
every MUD using ErisMUD is different.

Changes: This release fixes a nasty bug that crashed the server when
getting the "Transport endpoint is not connected" error. It adds the emote
command. It is basic; no grammar check for verbs yet.

[021] - fdmess 0.7.1a
  by Maurizio Monge (http://freshmeat.net/users/monx/)
  Mon, Jun 13th 2005 23:34

Software Development :: Debuggers

About: fdmess is a small utility to redirect file descriptors of running
processes and more generally tweak them. It works by attaching with ptrace
to an existing process and forcing it to execute some syscall. This way,
you can force a process to drop privileges, to redirect a file descriptor
to a file or a TCP/IP connection, to connect a descriptor to the
descriptor of another running process with a Unix socket, or to set a file
descriptor equal to the descriptor of another running process. Since the
code hooks are architecture-dependent, only the Linux-x86 and Linux-x86_64
architectures are currently supported.

Changes: A README with a small tutorial was added. The tell= option was
added to the the position of file descriptor (this has not been tested on
x86_64). The program should now work with executable stack. The default
verbose level was set to 1. A compilation fix was made for Fedora.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Editors
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: MIDI

About: Freecycle is a beat slicer that provides amplitude domain and
frequency domain beat matching and zero crossing algorithms. It exports
sliced audio chunks and generates a MIDI file that can be used to play the
sliced loop. It also exports AKAI S5000/S6000/Z4/Z8 .AKP files for use with
your favorite sampler. A LADSPA interface with full control parameter
automation and some quite basic but powerful routing schemas is also
provided. With traditional amplitude (scope) view, a fully integrated
spectrogram view is also offered, which is useful for LADSPA filter
visualization. Freecycle has a basic OSS output and preliminary JACK layer
connectivity.

Changes: Crop now crops the entire project (wave, beatlines, and LADSPA
automation). Some memory leaks that occurred when loading or saving
projects frequently were fixed. The LADSPA automation frame now shows the
value when dragging a line, polyline, or spline.

includes a STRUTs-based Web administration interface for easy
configuration.

Changes: The biggest improvement is that JAI is no longer required, as
GeoServer can now write GIF, PNG, and JPEG without relying on it (though
installation is still recommended). GeoServer is on the 2.1.x stable
branch of GeoTools, along with UDIG. Other improvements include better SLD
error handling, better handling of coordinate transformations, Min/Max
ScaleDenominator in SLD, WMS speed improvements, and a host of other small
fixes.

[028] - Gizmo Daemon 0.3
  by fLithm (http://freshmeat.net/users/fLithm/)
  Mon, Jun 13th 2005 08:36

System :: Hardware

About: Gizmo Daemon is a program for controlling your computer based on
events from input devices. It has built-in support for all Linux input
devices, including keyboards with special keys, joysticks, remotes, dials,
and more. It lets you control applications, launch programs, change the
system volume, switch desktops, and directly control XMMS/BMP. It has
special support for the Griffin PowerMate USB Dial, allowing certain
events to be visualized on the PowerMate's LED (such as XMMS/BMP sound
output, CPU usage, etc.). It features support for RF Remotes such as the
ATI X10 Remote, allowing it to have per-application key mappings and
configurable sensitivity settings (handy for MythTV users). It also has
XOSD support for nifty (TV-friendly) on-screen displays.

Changes: This release fixes a segfault in the Lua scripting engine and
adds an additional keymap to the ATI X10 RF remote for mplayer. The client
will differentiate between mplayer and other active programs and will send
the mplayer keymap only when mplayer is active.

[030] - Gled 1.2.5
  by Matevz Tadel (http://freshmeat.net/users/osschar/)
  Mon, Jun 13th 2005 08:33

Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: Gled is a C++ framework for rapid development of applications
requiring a GUI, 3D graphics, or support for distributed computing. It
extends the ROOT framework (a standard data-analysis tool in high-energy
physics) with mechanisms for object collection management and
serialization, multi-threaded execution, GUI auto-generation (object
browser and editor), and dynamic visualization (OpenGL). The distributed
computing model of Gled is a hierarchical tree of nodes connected via
TCP/IP sockets. Gled provides authentication and access control, data
exchange, proxying of object collections, and remote method-call
propagation and execution. It can be dynamically extended with library
sets. Their creation is facilitated by a set of scripts for creation of
user-code stubs. Simple tasks and application configuration can be done
efficiently via the interactive C++ interpreter (CINT). Gled is used for
development of programs in high energy physics and as a research tool in
distributed and grid computing.

Changes: This release encompasses many usability improvements stemming
from the development of the Event Visualization Framework for the ALICE
experiment (dedicated to the study of quark-gluon plasma formations in
high-energy lead-lead ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, the
world's most powerful particle accelerator, now being built at CERN). The
bootstrap procedure has been revised for clarity and configurability. The
OpenGL render-driver and GUI have been extended and made easily
configurable. Readability of GUI elements has been improved. Experimental
support for OpenAL has been added.

to a node in any of the providers, or even layered on top of another,
enabling the consolidation of multiple directories to a single location.

Changes: This release corrects some bugs with file lengths in Zip files
and adds some additional constructors and useful methods. It has been
brought into sync with MfGames.Utility changes.

  by D. Moonfire (http://freshmeat.net/users/dmoonfire/)
  Mon, Jun 13th 2005 09:37

Software Development :: Libraries

About: MfGames.Utility is a C# library that contains various functions and
frameworks, such as an auditing and logging framework. It also implements a
Mersenne Twister as a random number generator, an entropy framework, and
collections that use the framework for selection. The library also
contains many useful classes to simplify code, such as an abstract
reference system inspired from the Unix file system, additional conversion
classes, and timing or animation managers. This library requires no
additional packages or libraries beyond those supplied in Mono or .NET
1.0.

Changes: This release expands some of the retrieval functions of
AttributeTreeCollection and adds hooks to the Clone() and child creation
for the AttributeTree, including allowing the class to overwrite the type
of object being created. It reworks the ConfigStorage class and makes it
no longer singleton.

About: The RDVIS tool helps programmers pin-point the sources of cache
misses and poor temporal locality in their source code. The visualization

GUI that visualizes the low temporal locality patterns, and a patched GCC
 compiler to extract the low-locality patterns from programs.

Changes: Arrow colors can now be stored in and retrieved from a file. The
colors of bars in histogram plots follow the colors of arrows when they
are changed. Distributions of reuse distances can now be shown next to
histograms, so that plots similar to the ones in Chen Ding's and Yutao

Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: Serving XML provides a pipeline language for declaratively
adapting content to XML, transforming it through a chain of XSLT
stylesheets and SAX filters, and producing a stream of output to a local
or remote destination. The accompanying console app supports reading
content as XML files, flat files, SQL queries, or SAX events, and writing
it as XML, HTML, PDF, or mail attachments. This software is especially
suitable for converting flat files to XML, with its support for variant
record types, multi-valued fields, namespaces, hierarchical grouping of
records, row-by-row validation with XML Schema, and much more. There is
also an API for embedding the software in a Java application.

Changes: This release adds support for repeating groups in flat file
record mappings, required for converting edi files to XML. A new section
"Converting edi files to XML" in the online examples shows how this works.

  by William Fulton (http://freshmeat.net/users/wsfulton/)
  Mon, Jun 13th 2005 13:56

Software Development :: Compilers

About: SWIG is a software development tool that connects programs written
in C and C++ with a variety of high-level programming languages. SWIG is
primarily used with common scripting languages such as Perl, Python,
Tcl/Tk, and Ruby, however the list of supported languages also includes
non-scripting languages such as Java, OCAML and C#. Also several
interpreted and compiled Scheme implementations (Guile, MzScheme, Chicken)
are supported. SWIG is most commonly used to create high-level interpreted
or compiled programming environments, user interfaces, and as a tool for
testing and prototyping C/C++ software. SWIG can also export its parse
tree in the form of XML and Lisp s-expressions.

Changes: An improved runtime type system. The speed of module loading has
improved in modules with lots of types. Various improvements with typemaps
and template handling. Fewer warnings in generated code. Improved colour
documentation. Many C# module improvements (exception handling, prevention
of early garbage collection, C# attributes support, and more flexible type
marshalling/asymmetric types.) Minor improvements and bugfixes specific to
the C#, Java, TCL, Guile, Chicken, MzScheme, Perl, Php, Python, Ruby, and

delivery binary, only filtering at delivery time. It's very easy to plug
it into a working system. It connects to the spamd daemon, acting just
like the spamc client.

Changes: Big messages can safely pass thru spamdeliver. Initial procmail

[089] - Stunnix Perl Web Server 1.5
  by Stunnix (http://freshmeat.net/users/stunnix/)
  Mon, Jun 13th 2005 11:27

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: Stunnix Perl Web Server is an advanced Web server developed for
writing browser-based applications and database-driven catalogues or
presentations that reside on CDROM or DVD, internally implemented as
Perl-driven or PHP-driven Web sites that store data in a database also
located on CDROM. It produces a single CD that works on Windows, Mac OS X,
and Linux/x86, without requiring any additional software on the user's
computer. All an author needs to do to build a cross-platform
browser-based application or CDROM is to copy scripts to their proper
directories. HTML::Mason and mod_perl-like execution modes are supported
for Perl-driven Web sites.

Changes: A lot of improvements in support for PHP on all platforms. Now
browser-based applications based on SPWS can be installed into a directory
with spaces in its name. Perl plain CGI scripts work quickly and flawlessly
on Windows now. Apple MacOS X 10.4 (Tiger) is now officially supported.
Samples of applications have been added for Windows, Mac OS X, and Windows
based on Stunnix Perl Web Server that utilize Perl/DBI, PHP, and MySQL and
SQLite.

[096] - udp_copy2 25
  by lacos (http://freshmeat.net/users/lacos/)
  Mon, Jun 13th 2005 01:31

Internet
Utilities

About: This small tool consists of two executables, udp_send2 and
udp_recv2, implementing plaintext non-interactive data transfer over
UDP/IPv4 with a preset transfer rate. On lossy links, it yields better
throughput than TCP-based transfers. It may also be used for smooth user
space throttling. Usage documentation is provided by verbose command line
help. It runs on UNIX 95 conformant systems, including OpenVMS. It reads
from/writes to pipes. Packet numbers are 64-bit wide (easily increasable).
It dedicates a mode to SNAT/MASQ (the receiver can initiate transfer from
behind a firewall). It features a very precise user space packet
scheduler. It handles SIGSTOP in a rational way. It only transfers in one
direction for one invocation. It needs and uses no synchronous I/O
multiplexing. Shell access is required on both ends.

Changes: This release added OpenVMS support and was tested with Compaq C
V6.2-003 on OpenVMS Alpha V7.3-2.

[098] - upgrade.php 12
  by milky (http://freshmeat.net/users/milky/)
  Mon, Jun 13th 2005 08:30

Software Development :: Libraries

About: The upgrade.php script provides PHP backwards compatiblity. It does
so by automatically defining workalikes for more recently introduced PHP
core functions when run in an older interpreter version. This allows a
developer to safely use the more advanced features of PHP while still
getting most applications to run on outdated servers.

Changes: The strripos() and strpbrk() functions' edge behavior has been
fixed. The core script is better commented now, and some exotic functions
have been moved out of it. New emulations have been added for mhash, odbc,
PHP4 exceptions, and bcmath functions. The gettext module has been extended
with an incomplete but extremely fast plural-forms handler (as a separate
version).

[102] - Web Performance Trainer 2.7 Build 431
  by Michael Czeiszperger (http://freshmeat.net/users/czei/)
  Mon, Jun 13th 2005 13:53

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Testing

About: Web Performance Trainer is a load testing and stress testing tool
for Web servers. Its statistical analysis takes your site's performance
criteria, and determines the number of users your Web site can handle.
Because data is collected at the URL level, it not only identifies slow
Web pages, but identifies the particular part of the Web page that caused
the problem. Web Performance Trainer includes hard-to-find features such
as IP spoofing, client certificates, multiple simultaneous test cases,
authentication, SSL recording and playback, automated analysis, and more.

Changes: This release is of interest if you are using client certificates
in your test cases. The use of client certificates through a proxy server
was fixed. The virtual users were modified to switch out client
certificates each time a business case is repeated instead of assigning a
client certificate to each thread at the beginning of a test. A very minor
was fixed so that entering a non-numeric value for the repeat delay on the
profile tab now displays a more appropriate error message.

[104] - Xconq 7.5.0-0pre.0.20050612
  by Elijah (http://freshmeat.net/users/thelenocist/)
  Mon, Jun 13th 2005 11:46

Games/Entertainment

About: Xconq is a general strategy game system. It is a complete system
that includes all the components: a portable engine, graphical interfaces
for several platforms, multiple AIs, networking for multi-player games,
and an extensive game library. The games in the library range from ancient
civilizations to the far future, from simple to very complicated. Xconq's
forte is turn-based strategy with overhead map views, using a
hexagonally-tiled world. It includes a game design language GDL, which is
a declarative language that lets you define the units, terrain, etc, then
fill in tables defining their interaction. Literally hundreds of different
properties and tables are available to the game designer.

Changes: This release is mostly geared towards game designers, since a
number of new features were added for game design. There are some bugfixes
in this release. This is snapshot release, so some things may be broken.
Bugfixes include a crash in Sdlconq, improper unit property assignments in
the network receive code, and a crash in Skelconq's argument parsing. There
are more materials consumption restrictions. Operational roles are starting
to take over for plans. Much old cruft in the code has been removed.
