[001] - abcm2ps 4.11.0 (Development)
  by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
  Tue, Jun 21st 2005 02:51

Printing

About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.

Changes: Bugs affecting the Q: field and %%staffbreak were fixed.
Preliminary support for the new commands "scale=" and "staffscale=" in V:
fields was added.

Communications :: WAP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals

About: Anyterm provides a terminal emulator on a Web page using Javascript
and an Apache module. The module forks a shell and communicates with the
script using XMLHTTP on port 80, or securely using SSL. This provides you
with shell access to your machine from almost any Web browser, even when
firewalls are in the way. Experimental support for WAP browsers is
included, and the my.anyterm.org service provides access without the need
to install anything on your servers.

Changes: This version addresses some more 64-bit issues, resolves a
possible security problem, and makes it possible to pass the HTTP_AUTH
username to the program being run.

Information Management
Multimedia :: Graphics
Office/Business :: Financial :: Point-Of-Sale

About: Barcode Writer in Pure Postscript implements the printing of many
barcode formats entirely within level 2 PostScript, so that the process of
converting the input string into the printed output is performed by the
printer itself. This avoids the need to re-implement the barcode
generation process whenever your language needs change. The project
supports most major barcode formats including EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E,
ISBN, Code 128 (A, B, and C), Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5, Postnet, Code 2
of 5, and Codabar.

Changes: The isbnfont, isbnsize, and isbnpos options were added to allow
the independant manipulation of the upper part of the human readable text
within the ISBN symbology.

[006] - Berkeley DB Java Edition 2.0.42
  by Gregory Burd (http://freshmeat.net/users/gregburd/)
  Tue, Jun 21st 2005 10:22

Database
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Berkeley DB Java Edition is a high performance transactional
storage engine written entirely in Java. Like the highly successful
Berkeley DB product, it executes in the address space of the application
without the overhead of client/server communication. It stores data in the
application's native format, so no runtime data translation is required. It
supports full ACID transactions and recovery, and provides an easy-to-use
interface, allowing programmers to store and retrieve information quickly,
simply, and reliably.

Changes: Support for JTA, JCA, and JMX. Cleaner enhancements improve out
of cache performance. The ability to manage data sets much larger than
than the cache is vastly improved in this release. Sequences are now
supported. The ability to relax the 'I' (isolation) in 'ACID' transactions
is provided by adding support for read committed (sometimes called degree
2) isolation. This complements the existing ability to relax the 'D'
(durability) constraints in favor of speed. These are design trade-offs
left to the developer.

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Information Management :: Document Repositories
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics

About: Berkeley DB XML is a native XML database engine for use within your
product. Made available as a C++ library with language bindings for Java,
Perl, Python, PHP, and Tcl, it integrates directly into your application
(it is not a standalone database server). It provides XQuery access into a
database of document containers. XML documents are stored and indexed in
their native format using Berkeley DB as the transactional database
engine.

Changes: A few small fixes in the packaging of 2.1.7 and some other minor
cleanup.

[009] - ccbuild 0.5.0
  by A. Bram Neijt (http://freshmeat.net/users/bmm/)
  Tue, Jun 21st 2005 21:35

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: ccbuild is like a dynamic Makefile. ccbuild finds all programs in
the current directory (containing "int main") and compiles them. For this,
it reads the C++ sources and looks at all local and global includes. All
C++ files surrounding local includes are considered objects for the main
program. The global includes lead to extra compiler arguments using a
configuration file. ccbuild splits these arguments for compilation and
linking, keeping the linking arguments back for later use. It should allow
development without any scripting and only simple reusable configuration.
Real deployment/distribution should still be done with other tools. As an
added bonus, it can create simple Makefiles and graph dependencies using
DOT (graphviz) graphs.

Changes: Headers may now have any extension except for source extensions.
Include scanning was broken. The argument parser can no longer cause an
abort. Error reporting is much better.

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Systems Administration

About: g4u ("ghost for unix") is a boot-floppy/CD that allows one to
easily clone PC hard disks by using FTP. This is often done to deploy a
common setup on a number of PCs. The floppy/CD offers two functions: it
uploads the compressed image of a local hard disk to an FTP server, and
then it can retrieve that image via FTP, uncompress it, and write it back
to disk. Network configuration is fetched via DHCP. As the hard disk is
processed as an image, any filesystem and operating system can be deployed
using g4u. Easy cloning of local disks as well as partitions is also
supported.

Changes: Serial drivers were added again for those people that need serial
console. Support for IT Express and ATI IXP IDE and Promise SATA150
controllers was added. Many bugfixes and enhancements were taken from
NetBSD-current, including EHCI-based USB improvements. "dmesg" now hints
at pressing space/CR to scroll down.

About: GNU TeXmacs is a free scientific text editor, which was inspired by
both TeX and GNU Emacs. The editor allows you to write structured documents
via a "wysiwyg" and user friendly interface. The program implements high
quality typesetting algorithms and TeX fonts. It is also possible to use
TeXmacs as an interface to computer algebra systems. Finally, TeXmacs
supports the Guile/Scheme extension language, which makes it possible to
adapt the user interface to specific needs, and even to extend the editor.

Changes: This version implements several new facilities for structured
cursor movement. Some old bugs concerning the usual cursor movement were
fixed. The structured variant mechanism has also been further improved,
and more documentation about the Scheme API has been added.

[031] - Heirloom Bourne Shell 050621
  by Gunnar Ritter (http://freshmeat.net/users/gritter/)
  Tue, Jun 21st 2005 04:40

System :: Shells

About: The Heirloom Bourne Shell is a portable variant of the traditional
Unix shell. It is especially suitable for testing the portability of shell
scripts and for processing legacy scripts. The Bourne shell does not
provide as many features as newer Unix shells, but it does provide a
stable shell language. With this in mind, it is also suitable for general
script processing and interactive use. This variant of the Bourne shell
has been derived from OpenSolaris code and thus provides the SVR4/SVID3
level of the shell.

Changes: The "ulimit" command now works portably; using it could
previously crash the shell on some platforms. A manual page has been
added. The shell now also compiles on HP-UX, AIX, and Tru64 Unix. Shell
accounting with the SHACCT mechanism has been enabled.

[036] - JFCML 0.9.6.1
  by Shawn Curry (http://freshmeat.net/users/metasolutions/)
  Tue, Jun 21st 2005 22:58

Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: User Interfaces
Text Processing :: Markup

About: JFCML (JFC/Swing XML Markup Language) is an XUL and embedded
scripting solution for Java. It is a markup language which supports not
only AWT and Swing, but any class accessible to Java's ClassLoader. JFCML
additionally offers scripting support through the Bean Scripting
Framework, enabling the user to dynamically choose from most major
scripting languages. JFCML also offers its own scripting solution,
JFCMLScript. This is a tiny yet powerful script evalution service which is
also applet-friendly. Using JFCML, the user can construct an entire Java
application without writing a single line of Java.

Changes: This version is an emergency re-release. Due to an oversight,
JFCML was not being built for 1.4 compliance as documented. This problem
may have affected several previous versions. In the future, JFCML will be
tested using JRE version 1.4.1_01.

[039] - JSAP 2.0
  by Marty Lamb (http://freshmeat.net/users/mlamb/)
  Tue, Jun 21st 2005 07:56

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: JSAP (Java Simple Argument Parser) not only syntactically validates
your program's commandline arguments, but it converts those arguments into
objects you specify. There's a pretty big (and growing) list of return
types suppored by JSAP, including Integers, Floats, Dates, URLs, and even
java.awt.Colors; you can also add your own in a matter of minutes.
Cascading configuration files can provide arguments not supplied at the
command line, and a custom ANT task is included to generate a JSAP class
based on your commandline configuration.

Changes: A new layout for option help was added to avoid problems with
long option descriptions. The SimpleJSAP class was added to speed up
common configurations. StringParsers were added. Singletons of most
StringParsers were added to avoid unnecessary object creation. Default
values for parameters are now indicated in auto-generated help. No-space
short options, a la GNU getopt, were added ("-b5" == "-b 5"). A means to
determine whether a value was specified by a user or obtained by default
was added. Experimental XML support for JSAP configuration was added.
Several minor bugfixes and documentation corrections were made.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: JUCE is an all-encompassing C++ class library for developing
cross-platform applications. It's particularly good for creating
highly-specialised user interfaces and for handling graphics and sound.
The intended users are developers who are building large, complex
applications in C++ and who would like to use just one clean, high-level
API rather than a bunch of different libraries for different purposes or
platforms. Its features include fully lightweight components with
transparency and effects, classes for strings, containers, XML, streams,
file handling, messaging, and event queues, vector graphics, a custom font
engine, image manipulation, OpenGL support, low-latency audio I/O using
CoreAudio, DSound and ASIO, audio buffers and nodes, MIDI file and event
manipulation, Internet streams, undo/redo support, and more.

Changes: More UI goodies in this release, including an all-new tabbed
component, preferences panel, and key-mappings editor. There are bugfixes,

[041] - KBoincSpy 0.9.0
  by Roberto Virga (http://freshmeat.net/users/rvirga/)
  Tue, Jun 21st 2005 07:46

Scientific/Engineering

About: KBoincSpy is a KDE monitor and control utility for the BOINC
distributed client. It displays a lot of useful information about the
computation of work units, such as the percent of work done, estimates of
the completion time, and credits granted. For some projects, it also
reports interesting data about the content and signifiance of each work
unit being analyzed. Through KDE's IO mechanism, KBoincSpy is able to
monitor remote BOINC clients, and its plugin-based architecture offers
support for a virtually unlimited number of projects.

Changes: This version offers improvements in three areas: project support,
usability, and internationalization. Project support has been greatly
extended both in breadth (more projects) and in depth (more information
extracted from work units). User interface improvements include a
non-tabbed mode and the ability of non-transient windows to save their
size and position. Support for internationalization has been added, and
German and Italian translations are included.

is realized using the KParts object model.

Changes: New applications: Krita (a pixel-based image manipulation
application) and Kexi (an integrated data management application).
Integration of the OASIS OpenDocument file format. Other major
improvements include a completely rewritten Excel filter which can import
Microsoft Excel files very well. KChart has many improvements, making it
much more usable and functional than before. KPresenter supports master

  Tue, Jun 21st 2005 14:18

Security
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: The Linux Intrusion Detection System (LIDS) is a patch which
enhances the kernel's security by implementing a reference monitor and
Mandatory Access Control (MAC). When it is in effect, chosen file
access, all system/network administration operations, any capability use,
raw device, memory, and I/O access can be made impossible even for root.
You can define which programs can access specific files. It uses and
extends the system capabilities bounding set to control the whole system
and adds some network and filesystem security features to the kernel to
enhance the security. You can finely tune the security protections
online, hide sensitive processes, receive security alerts through the
network, and more.

Changes: This version fixed a security bug when checking the "LD_" exploit
, enhanced lids hooks to support capability-enable applications, and
enhanced the Kconfig to make LIDS visible when other modules are marked as

provided nihongobenkyo-import is installed on your system. You can select
the dictionaries in which Nihongo Benkyo will seek entries and you can
give a priority to each dictionary. Last but not the least, Nihongo Benkyo
can scan the selection from other applications.

[060] - PHP Application Distribution Licensing System 0.5.3
  by Oliver Lillie (http://freshmeat.net/users/buggedcom/)
  Tue, Jun 21st 2005 07:56

Software Development
Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Code Generators

About: The PHP Application Distribution Licensing System (PADL) generates
keys that control the distribution of PHP applications according to a
license. It generates license strings that can bind PHP applications to
specific servers, confine execution to a limited time period, or restrict
execution to a single server. The time limiting uses a start period (and a
given start offset to allow for time discrepancies) and an expiry date if
required. When validating a key it is possible to optionally make
applications dial home to check the license key on your own server. It is
also possible to encrypt additional information into the license key.

Changes: Security updates have been added to prevent reverse engineering
of keys. Coding consistency has been applied. The main class has been
split into various subclasses for better control and security. Extra demos
and examples have been given.

About: Perl Internet Protocol Scanner/Sniffer (pipss) is a small series of
tools for creating a 3-dimensional network monitoring system. Packets fly
through the air from IPs to a given firewall/gateway. Pipss uses Tethereal
to gather info, then uses OpenGL to create the scene. Traffic is updated in
real time (about every 30 seconds) and is even color coded. This program
should primarily be used by network admins with a decent amount of traffic
to cover, otherwise it's not really interesting.

Changes: The color of ports can now be customized. There is support for
multiple gateways/firewalls. The running time is much faster.

  by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
  Tue, Jun 21st 2005 22:54

Software Development
Text Processing :: Linguistic

About: Redet (Regular Expression Development and Execution Tool) is a tool
for developing and executing regular expressions using any of more than 20
search programs, editors, and programming languages. For each program in
each locale a palette showing the available regular expression constructs
is provided. The features of each program are determined by running a test
suite, which guarantees that they will be correct for the particular
program version in use and for the user's locale. The locale may be
changed without exiting Redet. Selections from the palette may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. Definitions can be
added to the palette via an initialization file. The regular expressions
executed are recorded in a history list, from which entries may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. This allows complex
regular expressions to be developed in pieces. When a suitable regular
expression has been constructed it may be saved to a file. Named character
classes may be defined in a file or entered interactively. As long as the
underlying program supports Unicode, Redet fully supports UTF-8 Unicode.

Changes: The palette has been greatly improved. Right-clicking on a
feature description now brings up information about that feature, in many
cases quite detailed. Double-clicking on the notation side deletes the
last entry copied into the regular expression or substitution expression
window. Tests and palette entries have been added for a number of
features, including Perl-style conditionals and TRE Agrep in-line cost
setting. In addition, there are numerous small improvements and minor
bugfixes.

the screen by constraining the mouse pointer. When appropriate, the
pointer is also constrained to the taskbar/menubar in order to make target
menu items easier to hit.

Changes: More resizing bugs were fixed. Window borders are now taken into
account properly, and some XFT font issues were resolved.

[095] - YourKit Java Profiler 4.5-EAP7
  by YourKit Team (http://freshmeat.net/users/YourKitTeam/)
  Tue, Jun 21st 2005 06:00

Software Development

About: YourKit Java Profiler is a CPU and memory profiler that makes it
easy to solve wide range of CPU- and memory-related performance problems.
It features automatic leak detection, powerful tools for the analysis of
memory distribution, an object heap browser, comprehensive memory tests as
part of your JUnit testing process, extremely low profiling overhead,
transparent deobfuscation support, and integration with Eclipse, JBuilder,
IntelliJ IDEA, NetBeans, and JDeveloper IDEs.

Changes: CPU sampling accuracy has been dramatically increased for the
platforms that provide appropriate support for thread time measuring. At
the moment these platforms are Windows NT/2000/XP and Solaris. The
connection and telemetry UI was changed. CPU and allocation hot spot lists
have been made more compact and thus more useful by excluding methods that
directly delegate resource consumption to other non-filtered methods.
Eclipse 3.1 RC2 is supported.
