Wed, Jun 22nd 2005 09:47
Communications
Internet
Security
About: The Auditor security collection is a live-system based on KNOPPIX.
It provides tools for analyzing the security of a system. It features a
menu structure that reflects the stages of a security check:
foot-printing, analysis, scanning, wireless, brute-forcing, cracking. In
addition to about 300 security tools, the collection includes background
information regarding standard configuration and passwords, truly
extensive word lists, and more mundane productivity tools.
Changes: There are now two different ISO images because IPW2200-based
systems run into trouble when ipw2100 drivers are installed.

About: authz-tools is a set of tools to manipulate authz files (as used
by mod_authz_svn).
Changes: This release fixes a bug with authz-admin (it did not append a
newline in one place, so some lines were merged, which caused problems).
Paths for a particular repository are shown in the lexicographical order
(this helps to navigate through multiple entries). Preliminary code for
htpasswd files management has been added.

[006] - autopackage 1.0.4
by Mike Hearn (http://freshmeat.net/users/mhearn/)
Wed, Jun 22nd 2005 04:31
System :: Software Distribution
System :: Software Distribution Tools
About: autopackage allows developers to produce "install anywhere"
packages for 3rd party Linux software. The resulting packages support both
graphical and terminal frontends, support dependency checking and
resolution, and use deep desktop integration. Additionally, tools to
enhance the packaged software such as binreloc and relaytool are provided.
By providing an autopackage, developers can ensure their users always have
an easy way of installing the latest release of their software.
Changes: The logic for determining whether support code was using a
terminal was fixed. Within installIcon, the icon theme directory is
touched so that new icons are recognized. Within installExe, the
permissions on .proxy.foo files are changed to be executable. Path
variables within the package's shell script are correctly updated.
Variables in paths-bash are exported.

[007] - Basic Local Alignment Search Tool 2.2.11
by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Wed, Jun 22nd 2005 18:18
About: BLAST is a set of similarity search programs designed to explore
all of the available sequence databases regardless of whether the query is
protein or DNA. It uses a heuristic algorithm which seeks local as opposed
to global alignments, and is therefore able to detect relationships among
sequences which share only isolated regions of similarity. It can be run
locally as a full executable, and can be used to run BLAST searches
against private, local databases, or downloaded copies of the NCBI
databases. It runs on Mac OS, Win32, LINUX, Solaris, IBM AIX, SGI, Compaq
OSF, and HP- UX systems.
Changes: XML output has been brought in sync with the text output, masking
filtered locations in query sequences. The graphic overview is now
implemented in HTML. Query-anchored views now work with
blastx/tblastn/tblastx. PHI-BLAST patterns are shown in the query-anchored
view. The formatter has been rewritten from scratch using the NCBI C++
toolkit.

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering
About: As an alternative to the photochemistry and vibration-free settings
involved with regular holography, this program allows you to create a
transmission hologram using just a computer, a laser printer, and an
overhead transparency. This hologram will behave like one created using a
laser, and can be projected or viewed with a point source. You create a
computer-generated hologram using the MedCosm CGHMaker by specifying an
input file as either a GIF image, a JAVA program, or an XML "point-source"
list. Compute the interference fringes, print on a transparency, and enjoy
your hologram.
Changes: Minor feature enhancements were done to make experimenting a bit
easier. These changes include output window labelling, reorganized output
algorithms, new intensity output, threshold available for all binary
outputs, a median/50% threshold button, display output byte clipping, and
normalized output options.

[013] - Conary 0.60.12
by Edward C. Bailey (http://freshmeat.net/users/yeliab/)
Wed, Jun 22nd 2005 19:31
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: A dependency-related error message has been clarified. AutoDoc
policy now supports symlinks. Autosource files that have changed no longer
confuse cvc updating. Conary configuration files now support line
continuation characters. Several bugs in the multitag handler have been
fixed.

About: DACS, the Distributed Access Control System, is a flexible
role-based access control system, comprising a set of authentication
methods, an Apache 2 module and suite of CGI programs, and a single
sign-on system, oriented towards controlling access to Web service
requests. It also includes a C/C++ toolkit for building new authentication
and access control functionality into programs. It can help manage access
to Web resources in many situations, whether on just one Web server,
several Web servers at one site, or many Web servers spread across the
Internet.
Changes: This release includes many bugfixes, the DACS Quick Start
tutorial (also to be available at dacs.dss.ca), continued development of
the dacs_admin service (not yet complete), and improved documentation.

[015] - DB Solo 1.0.9
by DB Solo (http://freshmeat.net/users/mhantula/)
Wed, Jun 22nd 2005 04:33
Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Systems Administration
About: DB Solo is a powerful database development and management tool for
developers and DBAs. It has an intuitive user interface that allows you to
explore and manage your database objects as well as execute ad-hoc queries.
It supports Oracle, MySQL, Sybase, DB2, Solid, and MS SQL Server. In
addition to viewing and managing objects such as schemas, tables, indexes,
views, tablespaces, users, roles, sessions, and stored procedures, you can
view, edit, print, and export data from tables or the results of queries.
You can also graphically view foreign key relationships.
Changes: Support for adding and dropping constraints was added, which
allows you to add and drop constraints to and from your existing tables.
Primary key, foreign key, and unique constraints are supported. Before a
constraint is added or dropped, you will have the option to review the SQL
command that will be sent to the server. You can now add columns to your
existing tables as well as drop columns from them. Before a column is
added or dropped, you have the option to view the ALTER TABLE command that
will be sent to the server. Notice that DB2 UDB does not support dropping
columns.

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
Software Development
About: JGraph Layout Pro is the next generation of graph layout engine
designed for optimal performance with the open source JGraph core. It has
flexibility and a simple design, enabling you to use circular, tree, and
force-directed layouts with ease in your JGraph application. It comes with
an application note and an example applet that demonstrates features such
as auto-layout, collapsing/expanding of grouped cells, graph morphing, and
selective laying out of sub-graphs.
Changes: A number of changes were made to the default settings and layout
configuration values so that the layouts are more likely to work as
required without requiring user changes. The user manual has been extended
and simplified wherever possible. Some bugs were fixed. South and East
orientations for tree layouts were corrected. The default Spring Layout
performs 50 iteration instead of 0. The default random layout does not
trigger a NPE anymore. It is also possible to set the annealing layout to
be deterministic.

[040] - launch4j 2.0.RC2
by Grzegorz Kowal (http://freshmeat.net/users/grzegok/)
Wed, Jun 22nd 2005 03:18
Software Development :: Build Tools
System :: Software Distribution Tools
About: Launch4j is a cross-platform tool for wrapping Java applications
distributed as jars in Windows native executables. The executable can be
configured to search for a certain JRE version or use a bundled one, and
it's possible to set runtime options, like the initial/max heap size. The
wrapper also provides better user experience through an application icon,
a native pre-JRE splash screen, a custom process name, and a Java download
page in case the appropriate JRE cannot be found. The increase in size of
the application is small.
Changes: The chdir property now allows you to change the current directory
to arbitrary paths relative to the executable (FR #1144907). It introduces
a minor configuration file incompatibility. The embedded JRE path no
longer depends on the chdir function. Static edge was removed from the
splash screen. The Ant task bug was fixed, since build files outside
launch4j's directory didn't work. The following bugs were fixed: a NPE
caused by a missing maxVersion property, a relative JRE path bug, an Ant
task NPE, and a run button bug in the GUI.

[041] - libferris 1.1.50
by Ben Martin (http://freshmeat.net/users/monkeyiq/)
Wed, Jun 22nd 2005 10:11
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Filesystems
About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using
C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each file or
directory to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various
data sources and expose them as filesystems and to generate interesting
EA. Current implementations include native (kernel disk IO with event
updates using fam), XML (mount an XML file as a filesystem), DB4, xmldb,
LDAP, HTTP, FTP, eet, sockets, RDF/XML, RDF/bdb, and mbox. EA generators
include image, audio, and animation decoders.
Changes: New features include the ability to mount evolution email and
contacts, native PostgreSQL mounting support, improvements to
Shell::acquireContext(), better whitespace handling in
parseSeperatedList(), an as-text filter for Word files, a new
is-dir-try-automounting EA which will attempt to automount a file before
reporting that it is not a directory, and a new size EA fallback which
generates its value by reading the byte contents of a file. fca:// formal
concepts now export their object-id as EA. Various speed improvements were
done to the FCA engine.

[042] - libferrisstreams 0.3.12
by Ben Martin (http://freshmeat.net/users/monkeyiq/)
Wed, Jun 22nd 2005 09:35
Software Development :: Libraries
About: libferrisstreams is a collection of base classes for custom
std::basic_streambuf subclasses, SigC signals fired when streambuf
objects are about to be deleted, relative URL handling, easy reference
counting on streambuf objects, a collection of IOStreams which
complement the standard ones on offer (MakeMemoryIOStream(),
MakeFdIOStream(), MakeHoleyOStream(), MakeLimitingIStream(), and
MakeProxyStream()), and additions for UNIX semantics. For example a file
stream can be created using o_mmap|o_mseq when one wants a memory mapped
file to be used an madvise(2) that access to that area will be sequential.
Changes: A readonly IOStream factory, stream, and streambuf class were
added. CleanupURL() now uses the internal ferris_g_get_home_dir() instead
of g_get_home_dir() from glib2, so when a ferrisstreams app changes its
uid, its home_dir is correct for the new user as well. The -release option
is now used instead of -version-info for libtool versioning. A double base
class typedef declaration in ferris_basic_double_buffered_streambuf was
fixed.

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3
About: Perdition is a fully featured POP3 and IMAP4 proxy server. It is
able to handle both SSL and non-SSL connections and redirect users to a
real-server based on a database lookup. Perdition supports modular based
database access. The distribution ships with modules for ODBC, MySQL,
PostgreSQL, GDBM, POSIX Regular Expression, and NIS. The API for modules
is open, allowing abitary modules to be written to allow access to any
data store. Perdition can be used to create large mail systems where an
end-user's mailbox may be stored on one of several hosts, to integrate
different mail systems together, to migrate between different email
infrastructures, and to bridge plain-text, SSL, and TLS services. It can
also be used as part of a firewall.
Changes: This is the first release of perdition in over a year. It
includes lots of updates, particularly a fix for a potential buffer
overflow in the Berkely DB module. The LDAP module can now use arbitrary
URLs if compiled against OpenSSL 2.0.0 or newer. All asynchronous IMAP
messages are now passed back to the end-user. The level to which
add_domain pares down a domain is configurable. And SSL now works in inetd

[059] - Quality Objects Framework 3.1
by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Wed, Jun 22nd 2005 21:51
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Object Brokering :: CORBA
About: Quality Objects (QuO) is a framework for providing quality of
service (QoS) in network-centric distributed applications. These
applications range from embedded applications to wide area network
applications, including many military and commercial applications. QuO
bridges the gap between the socket-level QoS being specified, researched,
and provided by a number of organizations and the distributed object level
where many distributed applications are best written. QuO adds QoS to CORBA
and Java RMI in a manner which is appropriate for creating applications
that can adapt to environments that are unpredictable or have strict
resource constraints.
Changes: Support for CORBA 3 has been added. Qosket components were
implemented, which are runtime instantiations of QoS behavior and QoS
adaptive code that can be assembled along with functional components.
CIAO, MICO, Red Hat Linux 9, Windows 2000, and Mac OS X are now supported.

[061] - RDVIS 20050622
by Kristof Beyls (http://freshmeat.net/users/kbeyls/)
Wed, Jun 22nd 2005 10:03
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
About: The RDVIS tool helps programmers pin-point the sources of cache
misses and poor temporal locality in their source code. The visualization
often directs the experienced programmer towards the necessary program
transformations within a few minutes. The tool consists of two parts: a
GUI that visualizes the low temporal locality patterns, and a patched GCC
compiler to extract the low-locality patterns from programs.
Changes: The ability to create reversed cumulative reuse distance plots
was added, which allows you to easily read the number of cache misses and
cache miss rates from the plots. An example on how to do this was added to
the tutorial. Some minor bugs were fixed.

[062] - Repository in a Box 3.0-beta
by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Wed, Jun 22nd 2005 15:29
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
About: RIB is a software package for creating WWW metadata repositories.
Metadata, from RIB's perspective, is information that describes reusable
objects, such as software. RIB allows the user to enter metadata into a
Java applet, which then sends the information to an RIB server via HTTP.
The information is then stored in an SQL database, where it is
automatically made available in a fully functional Web site (catalog,
search page, etc). Repositories that use similar data models can use the
XML processing capabilities to share information via the Internet.

[063] - rsyslog 0.9.0
by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
Wed, Jun 22nd 2005 11:40
System :: Logging
About: Rsyslog is an enhanced syslogd. Among other features, it offers
support for MySQL and fully configurable output formats (including large
timestamps). It has been forked from the standard sysklogd package. The
project's goal is to provide a more configurable and reliable syslog
deamon. "Reliable" in the previous sentence refers to support for reliable
transmission modes like TCP or RFC 3195 (syslog-reliable).
Changes: This release supports log files larger than 2 GB (where supported
by the OS and file system), and the ability to specify a maximum size for
log files. If a log grows larger, a rotation script (or something similar)
can automatically be called from within rsyslog. It 9.0 includes some minor
changes in preparation for upcoming major ones.

[067] - SpamProbe 1.2
by Brian Burton (http://freshmeat.net/users/bburton/)
Wed, Jun 22nd 2005 10:15
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: SpamProbe is a spam detection program that uses a Bayesian analysis
of the frequencies of terms used in the email. Because it filters email
based on content rather than on general rules, it easily adapts itself to
the types of email that each individual user normally receives.
Changes: This release moves all of the improvements from the latest
experimental release into the stable release. Major improvements include a
newer and more robust email parser and an alternative database format for
people who can't use either PBL or BDB. It includes a new email parsing
algorithm that improves parsing speed and captures more meaningful terms
than the old one. A new auto-train command can be used to build a more
optimal starting database than using the spam/good or
train-spam/train-good commands.

Wed, Jun 22nd 2005 15:15
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System Kernels
About: The Web100 project was created to produce a complete host-software
environment that will run common TCP applications at 100% of the available
bandwidth, regardless of the magnitude of a network's capability. Web100
has endowed TCP with better instrumentation. This instrumentation is the
foundation for both the TCP autotuning performed in process-level code and
the process- level tools designed to locate bottlenecks within the
following major subsystems: the sending application, the sending OS, the
Internet path, the receiving OS, and the receiving application.
Measurement tools have also been built on this instrumentation to display
performance indicators to end-users, as well as provide internal
diagnostics for network and system administrators.

Communications :: Conferencing
Desktop Environment :: Tools
System :: Monitoring
About: x11vnc is a program that allows one to remotely view and interact
with real X displays (i.e. a display corresponding to a physical
monitor, keyboard, and mouse) with any VNC viewer. It is similar to
WinVNC and is designed to be compatible with all Unix variants and
depend on a very small set of standard libraries. It supports a growing
number of command line options, such as -nofb for dual- headed mode with
Win2VNC. It is part of the LibVNCServer project.
Changes: The following new performance and interactive response
improvements are on by default, and additional testing of them may expose
problems. The X DAMAGE extension dramatically reduces the idle load and
picks up changes more quickly. Wireframes reduce lurching when windows are
moved or resized. The X RECORD extension is used to detect some scrolls.
The polling of non-X "raw" framebuffers (a device file, etc.) is supported
via -rawfb. An example is provided for remote access to the Linux console.
