[001] - Accessfs 2.6.13-0.17
  by Olaf Dietsche (http://freshmeat.net/users/olafdietsche/)
  Thu, Sep 1st 2005 14:27

Security
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Accessfs is a file system to manage permissions. It is not very
useful on its own. You need to load other modules like "User permission
based IP ports" or "User permission based capabilities". With these
modules there's no need anymore for most Internet daemons to run as root.

Changes: Updated to Linux 2.6.13.

  by S.Fourmanoit (http://freshmeat.net/users/syfou2/)
  Thu, Sep 1st 2005 14:31

Desktop Environment :: Tools
Multimedia :: Graphics

About: adesklets is an interactive Imlib2 console for the X Window System.
 It provides to scripted languages a clean and simple way to write great
looking, mildly interactive desktop integrated graphic applets (aka
"desklets"). It can also be used as a command line oriented graphics
editor, a bit similar to ImageMagick, but with different functionality.

Changes: The French documentation is up to speed with the English version.
This version includes many small fixes for various platforms: FreeBSD 7
should hopefully be supported unpatched, and manuals have been added for
the desklets submission script to please Debian. The biggest change is
probably the inclusion of an optional shell driver to the interpreter,
which easees administration of adesklets and the quick adaptation of the
code to new window managers.

Software Development :: Internationalization
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Localization

About: The Adobe Source Libraries (ASL) are a collection of C++ libraries
building foundation technology to allow the construction of commercial
applications by assembling generic algorithms through declarative
descriptions.

Changes: ASL was updated to use Boost 1.33.0. Speed was increased by four
times in the xstring engine, both in parsing and lookups. enum_ops was
rewritten to follow its original intent. All-In-One scripts that download
all ASL dependencies, perform the necessary setup, and build the libraries
were released. The Boost patch file was updated.

[006] - Argyll Color Management System 0.51a
  by Graeme Gill (http://freshmeat.net/users/ggill/)
  Thu, Sep 1st 2005 22:54

Multimedia :: Graphics
Printing
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Argyll is an experimental ICC-compatible color management system.
It supports accurate ICC profile creation for scanners, CMYK printers,
film recorders, and display monitors. Spectral sample data is supported,
allowing a selection of illuminants observer types, and paper fluorescent
whitener additive compensation. Profiles can also incorporate
source-specific gamut mappings for perceptual and saturation intents.
Gamut mapping and profile linking uses the CIECAM02 appearance model, a
unique gamut mapping algorithm, and a wide selection of rendering intents.
It also includes code for a fast, portable 8-bit raster color conversion
engine, as well as support for fast, fully accurate 16-bit conversion.
Device color gamuts can also be viewed and compared using a VRML viewer.

Changes: A performance bug in profiling and smart linking was fixed. This
can improve profiling speed by a factor of about 10 in some cases.

[009] - Big Faceless PDF Library 2.5.1
  by BFO (Big Faceless Organization)
(http://freshmeat.net/users/faceless/)
  Thu, Sep 1st 2005 11:00

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Office/Business

About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support and verification for Digital Signatures. Both
variations offer full Unicode support, encryption, embedded TrueType and
Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, spot and calibrated color. Advanced
text layout engine enables complex HTML styles. It is small, fast, easy to
use, and 100% pure Java.

Changes: The PNG de-interlacing routine was failing for some image
dimensions and depths; this has been fixed. An attempt to modify an
unmodifiable map with some Type 1 fonts (since 2.4.3) has been fixed. The
core of the library runs with Java 1.3 again, and will run if calls to
System.getProperties() have Access Restrictions. This has resulted in a
visible change to the API: standardEncryptionHandler.setAcrobat7Security
no longer throws a javax.crypto.NoSuchPaddingException.

[010] - Big Faceless Report Generator 1.1.27 (Stable)
  by BFO (Big Faceless Organization)
(http://freshmeat.net/users/faceless/)
  Thu, Sep 1st 2005 14:21

Documentation
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: The Big Faceless Report Generator is a Java application for
converting source documents written in XML to PDF. Built on top of the Big
Faceless PDF & Graph Libraries, the Report Generator combines these
features and wraps an XML parser around them. Using JSP, ASP, XSL, or
similar, creating dynamic PDF documents directly from a database is now as
easy as HTML.

Changes: Smarter embedded font initialization when italic, bold, and
bold-italic are really the same as the regular font. A rare infinite loop
when laying out some tables with incorrect colspan attributes has been
fixed. Occasional incorrect wrap when white-space="forced" is used has
been fixed. Another tweak to table layout inside paragraphs. No longer
crashes with an invalid 'style="display:;"' attribute. "qrcode" and
"pdf417" codes have been added to barcode. "aes" has been added as an
option for encryption-algorithm, for Acrobat 7.0 encryption. Built with
PDF library 2.5.1 and Graph library 1.1.6.

  Thu, Sep 1st 2005 08:16

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion

About: burnCDDA is a console frontend to cdrdao, cdrecord, mpg123, oggdec,
mppdec, flac, normalize, and mp3_check. It can be used to create audio CDs
from an M3U playlist (the playlist format of XMMS and amaroK). It supports
MP3, OGG Vorbis, Musepack, FLAC, and WAV files, and it might be the easiest
way to copy an audio CD.

Changes: The path to the used programs now can be configured, so it should
be easier to run burnCDDA on non-GNU systems. The filecount function now
uses awk and is much faster. The default device is now /dev/cdrom, and
some other settings in the config file were changed. Some code was cleaned
up, and the man page was updated.

[014] - Conary 0.62.0
  by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
  Thu, Sep 1st 2005 14:29

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: This release supports OpenGPG signatures on troves. It also has
some enhancements for creating groups, and some bugfixes for updating
systems.

[016] - Daffodil Replicator 2.0
  by joshiamogh (http://freshmeat.net/users/joshiamogh/)
  Thu, Sep 1st 2005 00:08

About: Daffodil Replicator is an data synchronization system that ensures
high availability of data in environments that make use of heterogeneous
databases. It can either capture a data-source snapshot or synchronize
changes to maintain a local database at remote client locations. It can
also be used for sharing workload across enterprise database severs by
mirroring vital data on identical databases.

Changes: Support for Firebird was added. Partial table replication tgat
allows a user to ignore specific columns in a publisher database table was
added. Complex database structures where tables have cyclical dependencies
are now supported. The XML file creation process has been reviewed. The
new process drastically reduces the time taken in capturing the insertion,
deletion, and update of records from Replicator Shadow tables and
transmitting the same to the target database server.

  Thu, Sep 1st 2005 22:05

Documentation
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: Daikon is an implementation of dynamic detection of likely
invariants. An invariant is a property that holds at a certain point or
points in a program - these are often seen in assert statements,
documentation, and formal specifications. Invariants can be useful in
program understanding and a host of other applications. It runs a program,
observes the values that the program computes, and then reports properties
that were true over the observed executions. It can detect properties in
Java, Perl, C, and IOA programs, in spreadsheet files, and in other data
sources.

Changes: A new source-based C/C++ front end, Mangel-Wurzel, is now
available. Mangel-Wurzel uses Rational Purify to determine the validity
and extent of pointers. A license for Purify is required. The initial
version is available only for Linux/x86, but future versions are planned
for Windows and possibly other platforms. Kvasir will remain the suggested
C/C++ front end for Linux/x86.

Security
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions :: CD-Based

About: Sentarus Enterprise Edition is a centralized dynamic threat
management solution for medium to large enterprises that integrates
network and host-based intrusion detection/prevention capabilities,
extensible service monitoring/regeneration, system integrity verification,
vulnerability assessment scanning, event correlation, and advanced
reporting capabilities. It supports open standards by utilizing
performance-enhanced versions of the Snort NIDS engine and Nessus
vulnerability assessment engine while operating on a self-contained
hardened Linux distribution.

Changes: This release contains several feature enhancements, with the most
noteworthy being the ability to create time-based rules. time-based rules
enable users to create policies by user-defined time periods. For example,
certain systems will normally be accessed only during standard work hours.
If these systems are accessed outside of normal work hours, time-based
rules can alert you to the possible unauthorized access attempt. In
addition to these alerts, you can create time-based rules to block or
quarantine access to specific resources or network segments during certain
time periods.

Multimedia :: Video :: Capture

About: Kalva is a KDE video recorder that is simple to use and easy to
setup. You can use it to schedule a single movie recording by choosing the
date from a calendar. A serial recording may be scheduled by choosing the

different hardware and quality levels. Kalva can import channellists from
programs like xawtv or xawtv4, and can generate a new one using scantv.

Changes: This is a bugfix release. If you wanted to tune your TV card to a
station whith a channel with 4 letters in version 0.7.95, the last letter
was cut off in the player tab and so kalva would tune MPlayer to the wrong

About: logalert is a log file monitor tool which executes a specific
action whenever it matches a string (pattern) occurrence. It reads an
entire file (or starts at the end, just like tail -f) and keeps track of
any changes, waiting for a specific pattern (a syslog process error, a
user login, etc.) and starting an action you define when it finds it. It
uses regular expressions to match the pattern occurrence and executes
commands via shell interaction. It deals with the log rotation and

[079] - the breve simulation environment 2.3
  by jklein (http://freshmeat.net/users/jklein/)
  Thu, Sep 1st 2005 07:25

Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: breve is a 3D simulation environment designed for the simulation of
decentralized systems and artificial life. While the concept is similar to
existing packages such as Swarm and StarLogo, the implementation, which
simulates both continuous time and continuous 3D space, is quite
different. It also includes an experimental physics engine, allowing the
user to implement real-time physical simulations. Simulations are written
in a simple object-oriented language called "steve". Users define an
agent's behavior by specifying how the agent interacts with the world at
each timestep and how the agent interacts when it collides with other
agents. The ultimate goal of the system is to allow decentralized
simulations to be implemented quickly and easily while providing a
sophisticated set of object classes and libraries to facilitate the
construction of advanced artificial life simulations.

Changes: This version features major enhancements and bug fixes to the
physical simulation engine, including faster, more accurate collision
detection and response, and better control over ball and universal joints.
This version also introduces a new, generic GeneticAlgorithm class for
evolutionary computation.

  Thu, Sep 1st 2005 00:15

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: The Mana World (TMW) is a serious effort to create an innovative
free and open source MMORPG. It uses 2D graphics and aims to create a
large and diverse interactive world. The game aims to be a unique place
for people to interact not only by fighting each other but to play life,
form a community within the community, or just simply chat. Although the
game is never-ending and a linear story cannot be applied, it should have
enough background to describe and predefine tribes, kingdoms, and the
environment overall. Fullfilled quests should lead to certain events
depending on them being solved. Quests should also encourage teamwork.

Changes: This release implemented dynamic updating of static data, which
should allow world expansion to happen independent of client releases. It
also introduced a better font, the option to use the default SDL mouse
cursor, improvements to the buy/sell dialog, and visualizing weapons when
used by other players.

  Thu, Sep 1st 2005 11:02

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Sound Synthesis

About: Transcend can best be described as retro-style, abstract, 2D
shooter. The graphics are geometrical, and the pace is sometimes
frenzied. Two features set Transcend apart from other games. First, its
dynamic graphical engine, which can smoothly morph from one complex shape
to another in realtime, produces striking displays. Combining these
dynamic shapes with subtle randomizations ensures that each new play
through a level is visually different from the last. The second novel
feature is the musical power-up system. As you play through a level, you
are simultaneously assembling an abstract visual collage and arranging a
unique piece of music.

Changes: This release polishes Transcend to a finalized state. A few minor
bugs have been fixed. Several previously-jerky animations and pop-ins have
been smoothed out. The control behavior for picking up pieces has been
improved. Damage graphics for the major anti-glyph have been added.
