Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering
About: Balazar is a 3D adventure and roleplaying game which is the sequel
to Arkanae. In the game's story, although the three Gods that created the
world have been safely imprisoned in the magical crystal of Arkanae, new
scepters have been reforged, giving birth to new Gods. The player must
find the scepters and imprison the Gods in the Arkanae or free them
forever by dropping the scepters in the Abyss. You'll have to find your
way through the 7 worlds: the Echassian village, the Pompon forest, the
great cathedral, the ice desert, the Arkanae citadel, the Abyss swamp and
finally the Elven Forge.
Changes: This version of Balazar is a full rewrite. The game's full name
is now "Balazar -- Arkanae II, reforged scepters", and has become the
sequel of the famous "Arkanae" game.

About: bib2xhtml is a program that converts BibTeX files into HTML
(specifically, XHTML 1.0). The conversion is mostly done by specialized
BibTeX style files, derived from a converted bibliography style template.
This ensures that the original BibTeX styles are faithfully reproduced.
Some post-processing is performed by Perl code. This is an update of the
bib2html program written by David Hull in 1996 and maintained by him until
1998.
Changes: The lists that bib2xhtml now generates contain CSS hooks. This
provides extreme flexibility in the presentation of the bibliography. This
release also improves the handling of ampersands embedded in URLs, and
fixes the handling of the circumflex character.

About: L7-filter is a Netfilter match module which classifies packets
based on application layer (OSI layer 7) data. This means that it is able
to classify packets as HTTP, FTP, Gnucleus, Kazaa, etc., regardless of
ports. It complements existing matches that classify based on port
numbers, packet length, TOS bits, and so on. Combined with Linux QoS, it
allows for full layer 7 packet shaping.
Changes: The IRC pattern can now handle MIRC color codes. The pattern for
Gnutella is faster. The pattern for Valid-Certificate SSL is faster and
more accurate. The TLS/SSL pattern now catches SSLv3 as well as TLS. The
benchmarking program now has a set of real data to test patterns against.

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing
About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.
Changes: Besides a number of small bugfixes, this release restores edit
functionality in spreadsheet cells, fixes the calculation of the remaining
quota in student portfolio spaces, makes content replication more reliable
on machines joining the cluster, and increases the number of attempts made
to contact machines that have temporarily gone offline.

Information Management
Information Management :: Records Management
About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex query
language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to search through
pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language enables users to
perform far more complex queries than what common search engines currently
support. It can be fed any custom sources, since its abstraction layer
manages the search results and their meta tags in a uniform way. In
conjunction with the local process scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan
enables you to save your requests and replay them later automatically; new
results are sent through email and RSS in realtime. Magellan also provides
full anonymity through smart multi-proxy support.
Changes: Alerts can now be dispatched through an elaborate personal
subscription-based mailing list, enabling users to subscribe to alerts
that others have configured. The whole tool's configuration can now be
done online. Each user can be assigned a specific set of configuration
parameters, including interface module, proxy support, load balancing
policy, etc. Users are now divided in different groups according to their
access level: administrators, managers, and users. Higher level users can
change the access permisions of others, including enabled actions and
sources.

by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
Sun, Sep 4th 2005 01:41
Text Processing
Text Processing :: Linguistic
Utilities
About: Msort is a program for sorting files in sophisticated ways. Records
need not be single lines. Key fields may be selected by position, tag, or
character range. For each key, distinct exclusions, multigraphs,
substitutions. and a sort order may be defined. Comparisons may be
lexicographic, numeric, by string length, date, or time. Optional keys are
supported. Msort uses the Unicode character set and provides full Unicode
case-folding. The basic program has a somewhat complex command line
interface, but may be driven by an optional GUI.
Changes: The main changes are the provision of two new comparison types.
Hybrid comparison is identical to lexicographic comparison except for the
fact that sequences of digits are converted to numbers and compared
numerically, as in Mac OS X filename sorting. Random comparison causes
comparisons on the specified key to be determined by a random number
generator rather than by the data in the key fields.

[063] - Rippy the Aggregator 0.12
by Matthew Skala (http://freshmeat.net/users/mskala/)
Sun, Sep 4th 2005 01:25
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: News/Diary
About: Rippy the Aggregator is a lightweight RSS aggregator written in
vanilla PHP. It downloads headlines from a configurable list of
regularly-updated Web sites, and merges the items into a single list of
all the latest news. Rippy could be used to keep track of several
favourite sites, or as an automatic supply of filler material on a public
Web site. It uses local files to store its persistent information,
requiring no database and no non-default PHP library support.
Changes: New alpha code ("Skippy the Scraper") was added to scrape Web
sites that don't provide RSS feeds themselves. The ability to export
configuration data as OPML was added. A bunch of minor bugs have been
fixed.

the given ID using its title and description. It isn't very easy to use,
but it offers extreme flexibility.
Changes: Polls were implemented. The OVER, FILE, LINK, and ANK
ContentBBCodes were added. POP3 email accounts are now supported via IMAP.

by John Currier (http://freshmeat.net/users/johncurrier/)
Sun, Sep 4th 2005 19:16
About: SchemaSpy is a Java-based tool that analyzes the metadata of a
schema in a database and generates a visual representation of it in a
browser-displayable format. It lets you click through the hierarchy of
database tables via child and parent table relationships. Browsing through
relationships can occur though HTML links and/or though the graphical
representation of the relationships. It's also designed to help resolve
the obtuse errors that a database sometimes gives related to failures due
to constraints.

Sun, Sep 4th 2005 07:17
Communications :: Email
About: Vmailmgr provides a virtualizing password-checking interface to
qmail-pop3d, a delivery agent to automatically deliver mail within a
virtual domain, and a set of tools to manage such a domain. It also has
Courier IMAP support. It uses one uid per domain, and this user can fully

is as easy as adding a line in qmail's virtualdomains file, and running a
few commands.
Changes: Aliases can now have autoresponders. A new "stat" command was
added in the daemon to look up the mailbox size. A "dumpvuser" command was

[079] - WidgetServer 0.7.6
by dvdw (http://freshmeat.net/users/dvdw/)
Sun, Sep 4th 2005 18:54
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: WidgetServer is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables
an application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server
Swing app, or as a Web app without any change and without loss of
functionality. A unified widget-based, object-oriented programming
interface for Web and Swing GUIs is offered to the developer to control
and assemble the GUI, instead of struggling with HTML, JavaScript, and
HTTP requests, or the internals of Swing. For Swing client/server
applications, the framework handles client/server communication, including
compression and security layers. A GUI-builder is included.
Changes: This release brings 'HTML centric page building', which means
that the framework reads HTML code and creates the corresponding page,
including all widgets, automatically. The HTML template section is usable
as a layout manager now, and some performance enhancements are
implemented. Static initialisation of applications is now possible, and
the alignment bug in the HTML/Web enhanced combo box has been fixed. Some
refactoring in the package commonGui has been done to clean up the
interface hierarchy.

Software Development :: Documentation
About: wyoGuide is a tutorial, a collection of guidelines for building
cross-platform applications with a well-designed, consistent look and
feel. It gives ideas and advice on how an application and its GUI could
and should be written. Development with these guidelines gives the GUI of
an application a standard set of base functionality. wyoGuide also
provides sample code for each guideline written in C++ using the wxWidgets
(formerly wxWindows) framework. For a seasoned developer it shouldn't be
difficult to adapt these guidelines to other languages or frameworks.
Changes: A sample modal dialog with persistent data was added. The project
files were updated for wxWidgets 2.6.1, the new stable version.
wyoGuide-Demo was also updated to 1.3.2.
