[001] - abcm2ps 4.11.4 (Development)
by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
Mon, Sep 5th 2005 02:56
Printing
About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.
Changes: Minor bugs affecting note offsets were fixed.

Information Management
Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: Ajaqs is a Web application that organizes FAQs on a per-project
basis. The UI is templatized, the content is internationalized, and the
styles are highly configurable. Secure login is provided via webapp
security constraints. The backend uses an O-R mapping tool to achieve
independence of database-specific queries. RSS feeds provide subscribers
continuous updates on a per-FAQ basis.
Changes: This release enhances the efficiency of JSP content delivery by
minimizing white-space during compilation of the webapp war-file, and by
using a filter that compresses JSP content before delivery to clients that
support compressed content. See the deployment descriptor web.xml for
details.

About: C++ Sockets is a C++ wrapper for BSD-style sockets. Its features
include transparent SOCKS4 client support and asynchronous DNS. It
implements the TCP, UDP, ICMP, HTTP (GET, PUT, and POST), and HTTPS (using
OpenSSL) protocols.
Changes: A bugfix protecting the socket handler from using deleted
sockets. A lot of warnings for Visual Studio .net 2005 beta have been
removed. There is a fix for BSD sockets sigpipe disable, using
SO_NOSIGPIPE. Solaris uses putenv in HttpdSocket. This release adds the
flag "flush before close", telling a (TCP) socket to send all data before
closing.

Security
About: Ciphire Mail is an email encryption tool. It works in conjunction
with your existing email client. It operates seamlessly in the background
and does not interfere with normal email routines. It encrypts and
decrypts email messages, and can digitally sign each message to provide
authentication and guard against identity theft. It resides on your
computer, between your email client and your email server, transparently
encrypting/decrypting and digitally signing your email communication. It
runs on Windows 2000/XP, Linux, and Mac OS X. It is compatible with all
email clients using standard SMTP, POP3, or IMAP4 (including SSL/TLS
variants and STARTTLS support). It is free for consumers, non-profit
organizations, and the press.
Changes: Better handling of Ciphire signatures (non-western languages).
Internationalization: French (beta) is available. Additional encryption
modes for individual recipient settings. An improved user interface. The
queued mail issue has been resolved. Easier handling of software updates.
A more user-friendly uninstaller. Many minor improvements and bugfixes.

[010] - Cisco Hammer 2.0.20050905
by Rob Patrick (http://freshmeat.net/users/rpatrick/)
Mon, Sep 5th 2005 04:56
System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration
About: chammer (Cisco Hammer) is a tool built on top of the Net::IPBlocker
library that was designed to beat Cisco firewalls, routers, and switches
into submission and compliance. The primary focus is to automate password
changes, deploy configuration templates, fetch configurations, and do just
about any other function a network engineer would peform via Telnet or SSH
to a Cisco box. A command line interface is provided and logging, verbose
output, automatic prompt detection, and automatic device type detection
are included.
Changes: Cisco PIX firewalls, IOS switches and routers, and Catalyst OS
switches are now supported. A new "run" feature was added that allows
sending commands from the command line to multiple Cisco devices across
the network via SSH and/or Telnet, in addition to the previous method of
using configuration templates and macros.

[012] - Conary 0.62.2
by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Mon, Sep 5th 2005 22:06
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: Further improvements were made to system updates. The "lock"
terminology caused confusion in practice and was changed to "pin".

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
About: CPAINT (Cross-Platform Asynchronous INterface Toolkit) is a true
AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript+XML) and JSRS (JavaScript Remote Scripting)
implementation that supports both PHP and ASP/VBscript. CPAINT provides
the code required to implement AJAX and JSRS on the back-end, while the
returned data is manipulated, formatted, and displayed on the front-end in
JavaScript. This allows you to build Web applications that can provide
nearly real-time feedback to the user, including nearly real-time data
updates.
Changes: A plain text response is now returned when using the XML|OBJECT
response type as second parameter to user-defined callback function. A
cpaint.capable property was added for determining AJAX-compatible
browsers. CPAINT parameters when not using the CPAINT API with a proxy
were fixed. Issues with calling object methods were fixed along with HTTP
authentication in the proxy file. Security regarding incoming function
arguments in ASP was fixed.

[015] - DBMAIL 2.0.7
by Aaron Stone (http://freshmeat.net/users/SodaBrew/)
Mon, Sep 5th 2005 15:17
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
About: The DBMAIL package replaces the normal UNIX mailing system. All
email and user data is stored in a database. You can create an unlimited
number of email accounts, which can be checked using the POP3 or IMAP
protocol. Users can maintain their own set of email addresses. It is more
scalable, more secure, and faster than traditional mail systems. DBMAIL
has storage drivers for PostgreSQL and MySQL, and it has authentication
drivers for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and LDAP.
Changes: This release removes all unsafe code from the signal handlers
which may have suffered from unreliable behaviour in the process pool
code. It adds 'ON UPDATE CASCADE' to all foreign key restraints in the
MySQL (InnoDB) and PostgreSQL create_table files. The POP3 AUTH command no
longer returns a list of supported authentication mechanisms when issued
without arguments.

provides UPnP controllers a means to render media content (audio, video,
and images) from a UPnP media server. Content rendering is done using the
GStreamer framework, providing rendering support for the media formats
supported by this framework.
Changes: This is the first, preliminary, source code distribution for

[023] - GNU gengetopt 2.14
by Lorenzo Bettini (http://freshmeat.net/users/bettini/)
Mon, Sep 5th 2005 01:35
Software Development
Utilities
About: GNU gengetopt takes a simple description of arguments and
generates a C function that uses the GNU getopt_long(3) function to
parse and validate the options. It is perfect if you are too lazy to
write all that is required to call getopt_long(3), or need to use many
options. The generated code also works with autoconf or automake.
Changes: Required group options are not checked when the flag
"check_required" is not specified. A function is generated to save the
command line options into a file. Dynamic memory is used for dealing with
a configuration file. The -h,--help and -V,--version options can be
overridden. Infinite loops with texts ending with newlines were fixed.
Variables which refer to a list of acceptable values have names that are
prefixed with the parser name.

About: gui4j is a framework for describing Java Swing GUIs completely in
XML. The GUI is created dynamically based on the XML definitions. Each GUI
window is associated with exactly one top-level XML file. Each XML file can
dynamically include other XML files to support complex GUI definitions.
Each XML file is associated with a Java object that acts as both a
Controller and a Model for the GUI. There is a strong layer separation
between the GUI and the Controller: GUI definitions in the XML files can
access all Java methods of the Controller, but Java methods cannot access
any GUI elements directly. Events are used to trigger changes in the GUI.
It requires Java 1.4.0 or higher.

by Ben Martin (http://freshmeat.net/users/monkeyiq/)
Mon, Sep 5th 2005 01:28
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Filesystems
About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using
C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each file or
directory to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various
data sources and expose them as filesystems and to generate interesting
EA. Current implementations include native (kernel disk IO with event
updates using fam), XML (mount an XML file as a filesystem), DB4, xmldb,
LDAP, HTTP, FTP, eet, sockets, RDF/XML, RDF/bdb, and mbox. EA generators
include image, audio, and animation decoders.
Changes: STLport use was made optional. Clients may now tell libferris it
is in setuid mode. A regression in isDir() logic was fixed. URL reporting
for eaquery:// was improved. New directories were added under eaquery://
to allow a maximum file cutoff for result size. TSearch2 usage was
improved. A minor improvement was made in rpm:// views. root:// is now
more populated. The Lucene index module was changed to use Lucene 1.4.x.
Fixes were made for boost 1.33. mysql++ and KDE3 detection were improved.

complement the standard ones on offer (MakeMemoryIOStream(),
MakeFdIOStream(), MakeHoleyOStream(), MakeLimitingIStream(), and
MakeProxyStream()), and additions for UNIX semantics. For example a file
stream can be created using o_mmap|o_mseq when one wants a memory mapped
file to be used an madvise(2) that access to that area will be sequential.
Changes: Building against stlport is now optional. Some minor IOStreams

Software Development :: Libraries
About: libstldb4 is a C++ wrapper for the sleepycat db4 database. It uses
the STL in the API where sensible, allows standard IOStreams for data
access where sensible, e.g. getting the value of a key should be able to
use an istream interface to allow simple partial value retreival, and
moves the transaction parameter to be the last optional parameter or
provides two versions of the same method for trans/nontrans. The API has
been modified to use more standard types. Operator overloading is used to
allow quick and dirty coding (mydb[ "key" ] = "value";) to set and cerr.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
About: Libxml2 is the XML C library developed for the Gnome project. The
library code is portable (to Linux, Unix, Windows, embedded systems, etc.)
and modular; most of the extensions can be compiled out. Libxml2 implements
a number of existing standards related to markup languages, including the
XML standard, Namespaces in XML, XML Base, Relax NG, RFC 2396, XPath,
XPointer, HTML4, XInclude, SGML Catalogs, and XML Catalogs. In most cases,
libxml tries to implement the specifications in a relatively strict way. To
some extent, it provides support for the following specifications, but
doesn't claim to implement them: DOM, FTP client, HTTP client, and SAX2.
Support for W3C XML Schemas is in progress. It includes xmllint, a command
line XML validator.
Changes: This release includes a very large amount of bugfixes covering
most of the code base. A couple of optimizations were done to improve
parsing speed performance. There is also a big improvement of the XML
Schemas conformance. Incomplete Schematron support was added.

Information Management :: Records Management
About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex query
language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to search through
pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language enables users to
perform far more complex queries than what common search engines currently
support. It can be fed any custom sources, since its abstraction layer
manages the search results and their meta tags in a uniform way. In
conjunction with the local process scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan
enables you to save your requests and replay them later automatically; new
results are sent through email and RSS in realtime. Magellan also provides

Mon, Sep 5th 2005 06:47
Text Processing :: Filters
Text Processing :: General
About: monq.jfa is a class library for fast and flexible text filtering
with regular expressions. In contrast to java.util.regex, monq.jfa allows
a regular expression to be bound to an action that is automatically called
whenever a match is spotted in an input stream. In addition, it is possible
to combine several ten thousand regex/action pairs into one machinery
(called a "deterministic finite automaton" or DFA) for fast parallel text
filtering.
Changes: The regular expressions for an Nfa can now also be specified with
a Jython module, because combining strings into huge regular expressions is
easier with a scripting language than in Java source code. The
monq.jfa.JyFA class loads an Nfa from a Jython module, and
monq.programs.JythonFilter allows you to set up a series of JyFAs on the

support for reliable syslog over TCP, writing to MySQL databases, and
fully configurable output formats (including great timestamps). It is
designed as a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and thus is able to
work with the same config file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features
require changing the config file, but in general, this should be fairly
easy.
Changes: Only minor changes were made compared to the previous release.

[095] - XINS 1.2.5 (Stable)
by Ernst de Haan (http://freshmeat.net/users/znerd/)

Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: XINS is a technology used to define, create, and invoke remote
APIs. XINS is specification-oriented. When API specifications are written
(in XML), XINS will transform them to HTML-based documentation and Java
code for both the client-side and the server-side. The communication is
based on HTTP. XINS competes with the complex SOAP technology. Main design
goals include simplicity, scalability, and testability. XINS is not only a
specification technology, but also an application development framework.
It offers transaction logging, unique log documentation, and active code
generation.
Changes: Two minor bugs were fixed. In the generated client-side code, XML
input data sections were ignored. In the generated server-side code, an
incorrect method was generated if the request had a data section element
that allows PCDATA content.
