by Nico Golde (http://freshmeat.net/~nion/)
Section: Book Reviews
Sat, Sep 10th 2005 00:00
As the title of the book suggests, this isn't about GNU/Linux. It's not
about the GNU programs that come with the Debian distribution. Instead,
the book with its 600 pages (including a Debian Sarge DVD) is fully
loaded. Martin F. Krafft, an active Debian developer, goes to great
lengths to describe the interplay of Debian's tools and the project's
philosophy.

[001] - Arno's IPTABLES Firewall Script 1.8.4a-STABLE
by Arno (http://freshmeat.net/users/arnova/)
Sat, Sep 10th 2005 07:08
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: Arno's IPTABLES Firewall Script is a secure stateful firewall for
both single and multi-homed machines. It supports NAT and SNAT, port
forwarding, ADSL ethernet modems with both static and dynamically assigned
IPs, MAC address filtering, stealth port scan detection, DMZ and DMZ-2-LAN
forwarding, protection against SYN/ICMP flooding, and extensive user
definable logging with rate limiting to prevent log flooding. It features
support for all IP protocols and VPNs such as IPSec. and is easy to
configure and highly customizable. A filter script that makes your
firewall log more readable is also included.
Changes: This release adds LOG_HOST_xxx_OUTPUT variables, renames
LOG_HOST_xxx variables to LOG_HOST_xxx_INPUT, fixes a bug in sed regular
expressions (which caused, for example, multiple source IPs not to work in
port forwards), and fixes the FORWARD chain for multiple subnets on the
same network interface.

[002] - AuctionGallery 0.9.4
by Stan Vasilyev (http://freshmeat.net/users/deathkrush/)
Sat, Sep 10th 2005 15:45
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
Utilities
About: AuctionGallery is a terminal script that creates picture galleries
for the purpose of putting them into auctions like eBay or Yahoo!
Auctions. It can also be used to automatically generate HTML templates for
auction descriptions. It is aimed at power-sellers who have hundreds of
products listed every day and need an efficient way of generating
galleries and organizing pictures in a coherent directory structure.
Changes: A new command-line option -n item name was added. A links
directory containing useful symlinks was added. The delete_originals
option was added. A bug in which files get overwritten and duplicated
during rename was fixed. Error checking of configuration options was
improved. All convert and rename work is done in a temporary directory to
avoid possible conflicts. Permission problems in the install script were
fixed. The user config file permissions were made chmod 600 to hide
passwords. Config file searching when using the -c option was improved.
The sample configuration file was revised.

[003] - audiokonverter 4.1
by labrum (http://freshmeat.net/users/labrum/)
Sat, Sep 10th 2005 07:07
Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion
About: audiokonverter is a small utility to easily convert between OGG,
MP3, AAC, FLAC, and WAV files in Konqueror by right-clicking on them. It
needs oggenc, oggdec, faac, faad, FLAC, and LAME to work. id3lib and
vorbis-tools are optional, but needed for full functionality.
Changes: kwavencoder has been renamed to audiokonverter. Copying of
metadata between OGG, MP3, and FLAC has been added. The application has
been rewritten, and now supports converting several formats to one format
in one go. The service menu has been cleaned, thanks to the rewrite. Usage
of the replay gain tag for FLAC encoding has been added.

[008] - Cacti 0.8.6g (Development)
by Ian Berry (http://freshmeat.net/users/raxnet/)
Sat, Sep 10th 2005 14:42
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: Cacti is a complete frontend to RRDTool. It stores all of the
necessary information to create graphs and populate them with data in a
MySQL database. The frontend is completely PHP driven. Along with being
able to maintain graphs, data sources, and round robin archives in a
database, Cacti also handles the data gathering. There is SNMP support for
those used to creating traffic graphs with MRTG.
Changes: A number of minor bug fixes have been addressed in this release.
The fixes involve the graph zoom feature, SNMP, and template exporting,
among quite a few additional items. Several new features such as a
tree-based graph export option and a redesigned "list" graph view page
have made it into this release as well.

by Mick Grant (http://freshmeat.net/users/mickgr/)
Sat, Sep 10th 2005 14:36
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Ripping
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing
About: CD-Rchive2 is a complete revamp of the popular but now aged
CD-Rchive program. It is intended to be used with cdrecord-ProDVD,
cdda2wav, and mkisofs for the production of data and music CDs and data
DVDs. Built in tools allow cloning of a complete CD or DVD and writing
copies. A Boot Wizard will guide you through steps required to make a
bootable CD or DVD, write the code, and compile a binary menu program
which runs with isolinux.
Changes: A typo in the bootable CD code hid some menu entries and caused a
ghost entry of another when not selected. A Linux image or a DOS image now
can be booted directly from the boot menu on the created CD/DVD.

[010] - delsafe 0.0.70
by psds (http://freshmeat.net/users/psdasilva/)
Sat, Sep 10th 2005 01:28
About: delsafe is a set of utilities to hopefully allow you to recover
recently deleted files. Basically, when you delete or in certain cases
overwrite a file the original file is moved into a trash can. It does this
by overriding the original unlink, rename, open, and fopen library calls
using the Linux LD_PRELOAD mechanism. Trash cans are placed on top of each
mount point and are accessible by each user directly or through links
placed in the user's home directory. This makes deletion very fast
because, in fact, it is only a renaming. To each filename in the trash can
is appended a time/version stamp.
Changes: A bug that prevented delsafe_create from creating the trash cans
in some circumstances was fixed. Small enhancements were made in
delsafe_clean.

http://indi.sourceforge.net/). This program is a client (a user interface)
and provides functions to control devices connected to a remote system that
is running an INDI server. The features and the structure of the GUI are
similar to the Kstars INDI client. The only advantages are support for
Windows and lower resource requirements.
Changes: An error in textvector reception was corrected. A message window
was added. An API and API documentation were added. Support for .fits BLOB
was added. Support for .ccdpreview was added. Sliders and a spinbutton were
added. Tutorials were added. Support for .stream preview was added.

Sat, Sep 10th 2005 01:27
Communications
Communications :: Internet Phone
Communications :: Telephony
About: Flash Operator Panel displays information about your Asterisk PBX
activity in real time via a standard Web browser with the Flash plugin.
The display and button layout is configurable, so you can have more than
100 buttons on the screen at once. It also supports contexts: you can have
one server running and many different client displays (for hosted PBX,
different departments, etc). It can monitor several asterisk servers at
once. It can integrate with CRM software, by popping up a Web page (and
passing the CLID) when a specified button is ringing. It also can be used
to enable click-to-dial for Web-based applications.
Changes: This release adds internationalization support. Command line
parameters are now accepted. It is now easy to specify a custom logdir,
PID file, and debug level. The web_hostname setting is now optional, which
means that is much easier to get it working and it overcomes the
internal/external view problem that many people were having.

Games/Entertainment :: Multi-User Dungeons (MUD)
About: JamochaMUD offers Unicode, plug-in, and multi-language support (8
different languages) to allow a more enjoyable MUCKing/MUDding experience.
It features command history, synchronized window controls, experimental
SOCKS 5 support, and greatly improved ANSI colour support. It plays nice
on Unix systems, supports a wide range of MU*s, and also includes
emulation of some TinyFugue editor controls. It uses Java 1.1, and
includes classes to be easily reused in other Java applications.
Changes: A bug was fixed which stopped commands starting with a
forward-slash from being sent to the MU* server, due to a conflict with
JamochaMUD's own variable and definition setting features. The user manual
has been updated and is also available in OpenOffice format. JamochaMUD's

[019] - K3b 0.12.4
by Sebastian Trueg (http://freshmeat.net/users/trueg/)
Sat, Sep 10th 2005 07:05
Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing
About: K3b is a CD and DVD burning application for Linux systems optimized
for KDE. It provides a comfortable user interface to perform most CD/DVD
burning tasks, such as creating an audio CD from a set of audio files or
copying a CD. While the experienced user can influence all steps of the
burning process, the beginner may find comfort in the automatic settings
and the reasonable defaults which allow a quick start. The actual burning
is done by the command line utilities cdrecord, cdrdao, and growisofs.
Changes: This release fixes the --cdimage and --dvdimage parameters,
DVD-RW Restricted Overwrite media handling, Index 0 (Pregap) handling in
audio cue files, compilation problems with the latest ffmpeg builds, and
the file browser menu. It always tries to create a new session in case the
old one has been imported, (regardless of the inserted medium's free
space), improves handling of broken cue files (searching the directory for
image files that could fit the cue file in case the FILE entry is bogus),
and uses RAW writing mode for audio CDs (in case the writer does not
support DAO, but RAW).

[033] - ProxyTrack 0.3
by Xavier Roche (http://freshmeat.net/users/xroche/)
Sat, Sep 10th 2005 06:58
Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
System :: Archiving
About: ProxyTrack is a simple proxy server that delivers content archived
by HTTrack sessions. It can aggregate multiple download caches, for direct
use (through any browser) or as an upstream cache slave server. This proxy
can handle HTTP/1.1 proxy connections, and is able to reply to ICPv2
requests for an efficient integration within other cache servers, such as
Squid. It can also handle transparent HTTP requests to allow cached live
connections inside an offline network.
Changes: ICPv2 (RFC 2186) handling has been added, allowing users to plug
the proxy to sibling caches (such as with Squid). Handling of the previous
httrack format (prior to 3.31/2004) has also been added. Several fixes,
including ones for bogus absolute external cache files references, missing
cache locking (leading to server corruption), bad keep-alive handling, and
redirect/error handling, have been added in this release.

[036] - RoadMap 1.0.11 (Stable)
by Pascal Martin (http://freshmeat.net/users/pascalmartin/)
Sat, Sep 10th 2005 01:44
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers
Scientific/Engineering :: Geographical
About: RoadMap is a navigation program for Unix and PocketPC that displays
street maps. Most of the maps are provided by the US Census Bureau, and
thus only the US has a decent coverage at this time. A specific area can
be displayed by entering a street address (street number, street name,
city, and state). It interfaces with a GPS receiver through gpsd or the
serial line to track the car position. It has been designed to be usable
on a Linux desktop or laptop computer, or on a PDA (Linux or PocketPC).
Changes: The look of the street is now much more professional. A Microsoft
PocketPC port was created. It is now possible to take a screenshot of the
map, and one can now "drag" the map using the mouse. Many bugfixes were
made, including fixes for NMEA decoding with some GPS receivers and
disappearing street shapes.

About: PTkSdict is a dictionary using Sdict dictionary format. Unlike
ptkdic or gtkdic, MySQL isn't needed; you can work with dictionary files
directly. It uses Unicode, meaning that words and articles all are in
UTF-8. There are two index levels, compression, and tools to convert from
text files to .dct and vice versa.
Changes: A found records counter was added to the Data application. The
dictionary compiler now contains all modules for sorting, making
dictionary creation possible on Win32. Bugfixes were made.
