  Mon, Sep 19th 2005 09:55

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
Software Development :: Testing

About: actiWATE (Actimind Web Application Testing Environment) is a
software platform intended to make the test automation process simple and
cost-effective. The major component of actiWATE is a Java-based framework
that emulates Internet browser functionality and provides a convenient and
intuitive action-based API for test script development. An automated test
in actiWATE is just a piece of Java code that uses the actiWATE API, so
this test can be executed through different tools (for example, JUnit test
runner). actiWATE collects testing information to log files and generates
test failure reports to simplify problem allocation and correction.

Changes: An extended implementation of the JavaScript Object Model.
Support for HTML image maps and areas. DOM Level 1 properties and methods
implementation. The ability to check the existence of non-HTML resources
(images, objects, and CSS files). Rhino has been updated to 1.6R1.
Language headers in HTTP requests. Improved detection of installed Java by
the TWA installer.

  Mon, Sep 19th 2005 04:52

Education
Information Management

About: Centre is a Web-based student information system. Centre has been
designed to address the most important needs of administrators, teachers,
support staff, parents, students, and clerical personnel. It also adds
many components not typically found in student information systems. Centre
boasts an intuitive interface to manage student demographic information,
perform complex scheduling, and manage student attendance, grades, and
eligibility. Centre greatly cuts down the time it takes to report to state
agencies and distribute student information to teachers, support staff, and
parents.

Changes: This version includes over 200 significant improvements. Foremost
among these improvements are greatly improved student demographic handling,
searching, listing, and reporting, and a completely rewritten scheduler
that efficiently schedules your entire school in seconds instead of hours
or days. The new scheduler handles linked courses that meet on multiple
periods, handles courses that don't meet on every day of the week, and has
better support for block scheduling. A more elegant look was implemented.

  by Phil Schwartz (http://freshmeat.net/users/phil_schwartz/)
  Mon, Sep 19th 2005 09:59

About: DenyHosts is a script intended to help Linux system administrators
thwart ssh server attacks. DenyHosts scans an ssh server log, updates
/etc/hosts.deny after a configurable number of failed attempts from a
rogue host is determined, and alerts the administrator of any suspicious
logins.

Changes: Hostnames can now be specified, in addition to ip addresses, in
the allowed-hosts file. The ALLOWED_HOSTS_HOSTNAME_LOOKUP configuration
parameter has been added, and when set to "yes", each IP address in
allowed-hosts will be resolved to determine the hostname (if available).
This is useful if your SSH server sometimes logs hostnames in addition to
IP addresses.

[025] - DUMA 2.4.19
  by Hayati Ayguen (http://freshmeat.net/users/hayguen/)
  Mon, Sep 19th 2005 13:46

Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Testing

About: DUMA (Detect Unintended Memory Access) stops your program on the
exact instruction that overruns (or underruns) a malloc() memory buffer.
GDB will then display the source-code line that causes the bug. It works
by using the virtual-memory hardware to create a red-zone at the border of
each buffer: touch that, and your program stops. It can catch formerly
impossible-to-catch overrun bugs. DUMA is a fork of Bruce Perens' Electric
Fence library.

Changes: A compile error in duma.c introduced in version 2.4.18 has been
fixed. The Makefile has been fixed and enhanced. A run-time check for
DUMA_PAGE_SIZE from duma_config.h has been added.

About: JSON-RPC-Java provides an RPC implementation that allows JavaScript
DHTML Web applications to call remote methods in a Java Application Server
(remote scripting) without the need for page reloading. It is an enabler
for the next generation of fast and highly dynamic enterprise Java Web
applications. Minimal changes (if any) are necessary to existing
server-side Java code to allow calling from JavaScript (such as the
marshalling and unmarshalling of special types), as JSON-RPC-Java
dynamically maps JavaScript objects to and from Java objects using Java
reflection.

Changes: The ability to handle generic Object and Interface method
signatures was added. The date marshalling format was changed to

Games/Entertainment :: Multi-User Dungeons (MUD)
Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
Terminals :: Telnet

About: KildClient is a MUD client written with the GTK+ windowing toolkit.
It supports many common features of other clients, such as triggers, gags,
aliases, macros, timers, and much more. But its main feature is the
built-in Perl interpreter. At any moment, the user can execute Perl
statements and functions to do things much more powerful than simply
sending text the the MUD. Perl statements can also be run, for example, as
the action of a trigger, allowing you to do complex things. Some built-in
functions of KildClient allow interaction with the world, such as sending
commands to it. KildClient has extensive ANSI support, it can display text
in the standard 16 colors, and also text underlined, in italics,
strike-through, and in reverse video. It supports vt100's line drawing
characters for nice tables and xterm's sequences for a 256-color mode.
KildClient supports MCCP (Mud Client Compression Protocol) versions 1 and
2, and a direct chat system to other users of KildClient or other clients
compatible with the MudMaster or zChat protocols.

Changes: This version has new features regarding the displaying of the
text from the MUD (it can display text underlined, in italics, with more
colors, and more), a new system for auto-login (where you can have more
than one character per world), and more.

About: libextractor is a library used to extract meta-data from files of
arbitrary type. It is designed to use helper-libraries to perform the
actual extraction, and to be trivially extendable by linking against
external extractors for additional file types. The goal is to provide
developers of file-sharing networks, file managers, and WWW-indexing bots
with a universal library to obtain meta-data about files. It includes a
shell-command and bindings for Java (JNI) and Python.

Changes: This release fixes various problems with the decompression code.
In particular, it adds support for older versions of zlib. Various
warnings related to gcc 4.0 were fixed. Files are now mmapped read-only,
which may improve performance, depending on the operating system. The
exiv2 extractor no longer copies the file in memory. The HTML extractor

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: mod_vhs is an Apache 2.0/2.1 Web server module allowing mass
virtual hosting without the need for file-based configuration. The virtual
host paths are translated from any database supported by libhome at request
time from MySQL, LDAP, PAM, or a system password file. PHP security can be
basically auto-configured from the database using this module.

Changes: The openbasedir appending function was fixed. Debugging for
openbasedir stuff was fixed. A warning about an Apache2 NameVirtualHost
oddity was added.

[056] - monq.jfa 0.16
  by Harald Kirsch (http://freshmeat.net/users/pifpafpuf/)
  Mon, Sep 19th 2005 10:08

Text Processing :: Filters
Text Processing :: General

About: monq.jfa is a class library for fast and flexible text filtering
with regular expressions. In contrast to java.util.regex, monq.jfa allows
a regular expression to be bound to an action that is automatically called
whenever a match is spotted in an input stream. In addition, it is possible
to combine several ten thousand regex/action pairs into one machinery
(called a "deterministic finite automaton" or DFA) for fast parallel text
filtering.

Changes: A region-of-interest (ROI) -- similar to monq.programs.Grep --
can now be defined when setting up a finite automaton (FA) via Jython. The
ROI restricts the work of the pattern/action pairs of the FA to the region
of interest. Text outside the ROI can either be deleted or ignored. Unit
tests were added for JyFA. Exception reporting for CallbackExceptions was
(hopefully) improved.

[069] - Plash 1.12
  by mseaborn (http://freshmeat.net/users/mseaborn/)
  Mon, Sep 19th 2005 16:24

Security
System :: Filesystems
System :: Operating System

About: Plash (the Principle of Least Authority Shell) is a Unix shell that
lets you run Unix programs with access only to the files and directories
they need to run. In order to implement this, the filesystem is
virtualized. Each process can have its own namespace, which can contain a
subset of your files. Plash is implemented by modifying GNU libc and
replacing the system calls that use filenames. For example, open() is
changed so that it sends a message to a file server via a socket. If the
request is successful, the server sends the client a file descriptor.
Processes are run in a chroot jail under dynamically-allocated user IDs.
No kernel modifications are required. Existing Linux binaries work
unchanged.

Changes: This release includes an initial version of a new tool, pola-run,
a programmatic interface for starting programs under the Plash environment.
This can be used from Bash scripts and other programs. A race condition
(albeit hard-to-exploit) has been fixed in the code for allocating and
freeing UIDs. libm.so and other libraries are included to enable
co-existence with glibc 2.3.5 in the host installation.

About: SPMS and syspatch are a useful tools to apply OpenBSD patches to a
collection of OpenBSD hosts where you don't want to have a compiler and
the src hierarchy, nor spend the time needed to compile some sources. SPMS
and syspatch are designed for admins who have more than one OpenBSD box to
administer, who work in teams, and don't want to spend time on repetitive
tasks. In case of trouble, you can revert on an applied patch. It will not
mask the process of OpenBSD patching, since you still have to build errata
on a buildhost and understand what is patched.

Changes: Some more code cleanup. Non-root users may now list applied

About: Stunnix Perl Web Server is an advanced Web server developed for
writing browser-based applications and database-driven catalogues or
presentations that reside on CDROM or DVD, internally implemented as
Perl-driven or PHP-driven Web sites that store data in a database also
located on CDROM. It produces a single CD that works on Windows, Mac OS X,

computer. All an author needs to do to build a cross-platform
browser-based application or CDROM is to copy scripts to their proper
directories. HTML::Mason and mod_perl-like execution modes are supported
for Perl-driven Web sites.

Changes: This release adds support for PHP files encoded by the IonCube

About: The WiKID Strong Authentication System is a highly scalable, secure
two-factor authentication system consisting of a server, a token client,
and network clients that connect a service such as a VPN or Web page to
the WiKID server to validate one-time passcodes. The user enters their PIN
into the token client, where it is encrypted and sent to the server. If the
PIN is correct, the encryption valid, and account active, the one-time
passcode is generated, encrypted, and returned to the user. It is simple
to implement and maintain, allows users to be validated automatically,
requires no hardware tokens, has a simple API for application support via
a COM object and Java component, supports multiple domains, and supports
replication for fault tolerance and scalability.

Changes: Binary versions of the WiKID client were added, including one for
Windows. Minor bugfixes were made. Unnecessary files were removed, and

[086] - xsd 1.3.0
  by Boris Kolpackov (http://freshmeat.net/users/bosk/)

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: xsd is a W3C XML Schema to C++ translator. It generates a
vocabulary-specific, statically-typed C++ mapping (also called binding)
from XML Schema definitions. The mapping consists of data types that
represent the given vocabulary, a set of parsing functions that convert
XML instance documents to a tree-like in-memory data structure, and a set
of serialization functions that convert the in-memory representation back
to XML. xsd features C++ standard library-based language mapping,
configurable base character type (char/wchar_t), support for all XML
Schema built-in types, custom Schema to C++ namespace mapping,
platform-independent generated code, and more.

Changes: Automatic morphing of anonymous types to named ones has been
implemented. Parser functions that read from std::istream have been added.
A number of bugs have been fixed.

Communications
Security
System :: Networking

About: Yersinia implements several attacks for the following protocols:
Spanning Tree (STP), Cisco Discovery (CDP), Dynamic Host Configuration
(DHCP), Hot Standby Router (HSRP), Dynamic Trunking (DTP), 802.1q,
Inter-Switch Link Protocol (ISL), and VLAN Trunking (VTP). It helps the
pen-tester in different tasks, such as becoming the root role in the
Spanning Tree, creating virtual CDP neighbors, setting up rogue DHCP
servers, becoming the active router in a HSRP scenario, enabling trunk,
performing ARP spoofing over VLAN hopping, adding or deleting VLANs (via
VTP), and more.

Changes: This release adds --with-libnet-includes and --with-pcap-includes
to the configure script. It adds Darwin OS support to the configure script.
A bug when using more than 1 command line argument has been fixed. Support
has been added for IPv4 filtering for the network daemon in the
configuration file; now expressions with '-', '*' and CIDR are supported.
