Software Development :: Libraries
About: The ADAPTIVE Communication Environment (ACE) is an object-oriented
(OO) C++ framework that can help you develop and deploy high-performance
software systems faster and better. ACE is especially useful for systems
that use network and/or inter-process communications and that take
advantage of multithreading. While the ACE source code is free, that's not
the only way you save money with ACE. ACE's wrappers and higher-level
patterns help you develop your software quickly and portably, helping you
to complete your projects on time and within budget.
Changes: Codeset negotiation support was moved out of the core TAO library
and placed in a separate library, TAO_Codeset. Typed Event Channel
implementation is now feature-complete. Support for the new Custom Servant
Dispatching (CSD) feature was added. ACE/TAO wide character support was
refactored. Workarounds were added for HP-UX 11i threading bugs. Minor
changes were made to compilation defaults.

[003] - Apache httpd tools 1.1
by Ivan Ristic (http://freshmeat.net/users/ivanrristic/)
Fri, Sep 23rd 2005 03:43
About: Apache httpd tools is a collection of administrative and security
tools originally developed for the book Apache Security (O'Reilly).
Included are tools for Apache httpd monitoring, statistics, log analysis,
DoS detection, and defense.
Changes: A new script, httpd-guardian, monitors all Web server requests
and defends from DoS attacks. (This is just the first of the series of
stateful features that are planned.) The blacklist script can now read
commands from a file. It is thus possible to invoke it as a cron job in
order to reduce the possibility of a Web server spawning too many
processes in response to attacks. Log parsing in logscan was improved to
work with invalid HTTP requests. Several small bugfixes were also made.

[004] - bibEC Process Card 1.2.7.1
by Fabrizio Parrella (http://freshmeat.net/users/dnfnva/)
Fri, Sep 23rd 2005 04:23
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: bibEC Process Card is a class that processes credit card payments
via one of the multiple supported payment gateways. Currently, these
include Plug and Pay, Authorize.net, ViaKlix, and other minor gateways.
Changing between payment gateways is mostly a matter of changing the class
constructor parameter. It provides a payment gateway independent API with
functions for logging the payment activity, setting authentication
credentials, submitting requests, and retrieving the results. Submissions
are performed securely when possible using SSL or Curl.
Changes: Paynet was added as a new gateway. Currency and a parameter that
could force the way to contact a gateway were added.

[011] - Conary 0.62.9
by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Fri, Sep 23rd 2005 17:34
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: Multiple repositories running on one server can no longer have
key cache collisions. The new EnforceConfigLogBuildRequirements policy
looks through config.log files for hints on unlisted build requirements.

About: The GNU Compact Disc Input and Control library encapsulates CD-ROM
reading and control for applications wishing to be oblivious to the OS-
and device-dependent properties of a CD-ROM. It provides an API for access
to SCSI-MMC (multimedia commands) and support for CD image types like
BIN/CUE, cdrdao's TOC, and Nero's NRG, which gives applications using the
library the ability to read disc images as though they were CDs. ISO-9660
filesystem support is included, as are utility programs for displaying CD
and CD-ROM drive information, reading the blocks of a CD, and extracting
files from an ISO-9660 filesytem image. cdparanoia is also included.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
Software Development :: Testing
About: Juxy is a Java unit testing library for XSLT. It allows you to
write JUnit tests for XSLT stylesheets. You can easily setup
transformation context (parameters, variables, current node) and then
invoke the transformation. There are corresponding methods to call or to
apply individual templates and you can even pass parameters to these
templates, or apply templates in different modes. Result of the
transformation can be verified in a number of ways; you can evaluate an
XPath expression or you can perform canonical XML comparison. It works
with any XSLT processor that supports the TRaX API.
Changes: This release adds the ability to trace execution of stylesheet
instructions and an Ant task for batch verification of XSLT stylesheets.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion
Multimedia :: Video
About: LiVES is a simple to use yet powerful video effects, editing,
conversion, and playback system aimed at the digital video artist and VJ.
It uses commonly available tools (Mplayer, ImageMagick, and GTK+), so it
should work on most Unix-like systems. It runs under Linux, BSD, IRIX, and
openMosix (and soon OS X/Darwin). It works with almost all types of video,
and is fully extendable through plugins and the included plugin builder
tool.
Changes: This release has an "mplayer -identify" fix (it was accidentally
omitted in the last release). It fixes two more stability bugs for VJ
mode, adds more realtime effects, fixes DISTDIR for Makefile.am for icons
and RFXScripts, shows progress when resampling/reordering, uses "long" for
timing instead of "long double", improves real-time recording, has updates
to multi_encoder/subencoders, makes real-time effects and clip switches
recordable, adds "event_list" to LiVES, and creates an internal

[038] - LogToMysql 0.95
by David Fletcher (http://freshmeat.net/users/difdif/)
Fri, Sep 23rd 2005 17:32
System :: Logging
System :: Systems Administration
About: LogToMysql contains two simple programs for logging from an Apache
web server to a MySQL database using the piped logs mechanism. It can be
used on either a single server running both Apache and MySQL, or with
separate machines. If separate machines are used, several servers can log
accesses and errors to a single database. The code may be used with both
Apache versions 1 and 2, and other servers capable of piped logging. It is
designed for "common" or "combined" access log formats. No changes are
required to a standard server installation; these are stand alone
programs, not server modules. On an Athlon 1800 machine running both the
Apache server and MySQL, it was possible to sustain logging of over 200
hits per second without problems.
Changes: Changes to prevent segmentation faults in case of attempting to
log when the database is down, or is slower starting up than the Apache
server. Errors are written to standard output if there is no error log
configured.

by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
Fri, Sep 23rd 2005 09:34
System :: Logging
About: Rsyslog is an enhanced syslogd. Among other features, it offers
support for reliable syslog over TCP, writing to MySQL databases, and
fully configurable output formats (including great timestamps). It is
designed as a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and thus is able to
work with the same config file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features
require changing the config file, but in general, this should be fairly
easy.
Changes: rsyslog 1.0.0 and below is vulnerable to SQL injection. Release
1.0.1 fixes this issue. It has no other fixes or enhancements. If you are
using rsyslog to write log messages to a database, you are strongly
advised to upgrade to 1.0.1. For the development branch, a separate
announcement will be made.

System :: Logging
About: Rsyslog is an enhanced syslogd. Among other features, it offers

designed as a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and thus is able to
work with the same config file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features
require changing the config file, but in general, this should be fairly
easy.
Changes: The most important feature is the SQL injection fix. This release
also fixes the handling of broken MySQL connections. It adds the ability to
execute scripts (and other programs) on message reception. Together with
the new filtering engine, this can be used to generate email alerts on
important events, just to name one use case.

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: TCPfork is an userland TCP proxy with advanced load balancing
capabilities. Its core features are the ability to load balance on a
"least connection" basis and the ability to take the machine load into
account ("least load" or "least resource" load balancing). This is
implemented by using the bngagent UDP protocol. It performs "TCP open"
health checks by default and allows the use of external health check
scripts and is compatible with the "mon" monitor script.
Changes: The feature "maximum number of connections per destination" was
added. Minor bugfixes were applied. The manual has been updated.

[070] - The Life of a Geek 2.0alpha1 (Alpha)
by core_dump (http://freshmeat.net/users/core_dump_0/)
Fri, Sep 23rd 2005 05:30
Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
About: The Life of a Geek is very silly console game in which you (a geek)
must keep a computer running until you graduate college. Surf around on the
Internet, battling hackers to gain money and better security for your box.
Drink lots of caffeine to keep yourself awake, since if you go to sleep,
you risk an attack on your computer. Save up money to take a month-long
college course and improve your education, but remember that paying
attention to schoolwork also leaves your computer open to attack. Find a
quick job for a month at places like fast-food restaurants and grocery
stores, but remember again that time away from your computer leaves it
open to attack. Viruses may also appear on your computer, weakening your
computer's health points regularly until cleaned.
Changes: Removed Unix no-extension equivalent of the DOS-formatted TXT
files, since Unix systems can read DOS-formatted text as well. Some
unnecessary code was removed. In-game "show w" and "show c" were replaced
with "w" and "c" as arguments passed to the lifegeek binary. The current
score is now shown after saving a game. Added levels of play were added.

System :: Systems Administration
About: Usermin is a Web interface that can be used by any user on a UNIX
system to easily perform tasks like reading mail, setting up SSH, or
configuring mail forwarding. It can be thought of as a simplified version
of Webmin designed for use by normal users rather than system
administrators.
Changes: A security hole that allows a remote attack if the "Support full
PAM conversations?" option is enabled in the Usermin Configuration module
was fixed. The Cron module allows a start and end date to be specified for
jobs. A simpler interface was added to the Mail Forwarding and Replies
module. The MySQL and PostgreSQL modules allow multiple tables to be
deleted at once, and display search forms when a database has too many
tables. The Upload and Download module can now be used to fetch a file
from the server running Usermin to the PC on which your browser runs.

[079] - WANPIPE 2.3.2-5 (Stable)
by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Fri, Sep 23rd 2005 06:04
Communications
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System
About: WANPIPE S-series is a family of intelligent multi-protocol WAN and
ADSL adapters that support data transfer rates up to 8Mbps. All WAN
protocols supported by WANPIPE are implemented in firmware and run on the
card. An advantage of an intelligent adapter is that it offloads the
system CPU and improves stability. By adding a Sangoma WAN/ADSL component
to the Linux kernel, one can create a powerful multi-T1/ADSL
router/firewall with proven reliability of Linux. Sangoma S-series cards
support an optional on board T1/E1 CSU/DSU that eliminates all external
components of a traditional routing solution: i.e. T1/E1 line can be
directly connected to the card. WANPIPE supports the following protocols,
ATM, ADSL, Frame Relay, PPP, MULTILINK PPP, CHDLC, X25(API), BitStreaming
(API), BiSync(API), and SDLC(API). Furthermore, WANPIPE supports custom
API development such as: Credit card verification, Voice-over IP,
Satellite Comm. All device drivers are part of the standard Linux Kernel
distribution.
Changes: A bug with displaying initial E1 state for AFT A101/2 drivers was
fixed. A segfault on shutdown for AFT A101/2 cards configured for LIP PPP
was fixed. Tighter timeout conditions were added. A bugfix was made in
rx/tx error handling for AFT A301 T3 drivers. A utility was added to
auto-update firmware on all AFT cards.

by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Fri, Sep 23rd 2005 05:49
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System Kernels
About: The Web100 project was created to produce a complete host-software
environment that will run common TCP applications at 100% of the available
bandwidth, regardless of the magnitude of a network's capability. Web100
has endowed TCP with better instrumentation. This instrumentation is the
foundation for both the TCP autotuning performed in process-level code and
the process- level tools designed to locate bottlenecks within the
following major subsystems: the sending application, the sending OS, the
Internet path, the receiving OS, and the receiving application.
Measurement tools have also been built on this instrumentation to display
performance indicators to end-users, as well as provide internal
diagnostics for network and system administrators.
Changes: The kernel was updated to Linux 2.6.13. The congestion control
code was removed, as this is now in the kernel. WAD_NoAI was changed so
that it takes effect also when doing slow start.
