[001] - 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons Character Generator 2.6
by Slicer (http://freshmeat.net/users/slicer/)
Sun, Sep 25th 2005 02:21
Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
About: 3rd Edition Dungeons and Dragons Character Generator is an
HTML/JavaScript Web page that allows the user to quickly and easily create
new Dungeons and Dragons characters. The characters can be of any of the
eleven classes, any of the playable races, and may start at any level from
1 to 220. Generation requires some simple input, after which the character
is displayed on a basic character sheet. It allows you to select your
starting stats, add ability points, and pick skills, equipment, feats, and
spells. It runs on most operating systems with most modern browsers.
Changes: This release fixes a long term issue with Internet Explorer. If
you had trouble using the character generator before in IE, your problem
should be resolved with this update.

[002] - Amber for Parrot 0.2.3a
by Roger Browne (http://freshmeat.net/users/eiffel/)
Sun, Sep 25th 2005 02:18
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Amber for Parrot is an object-oriented scripting language for the
Parrot virtual machine. It combines the traditional advantages of
scripting languages with support for software correctness and large-scale
software engineering. Amber for Parrot has syntax and semantics somewhere
between those of Eiffel and Ruby.
Changes: New library classes include command-line argument handling and
regular expression matching (using Perl 6 rules). There are new examples
for regular expressions, Conway's Game of Life, and a basic GUI example.
Strings and characters now support escape codes. Local variables can now
be initialized at the point of declaration. The documentation has been
improved.

[003] - backstep 0.3
by Christopher (http://freshmeat.net/users/cacarroll/)
Sun, Sep 25th 2005 19:08
About: Backstep is a program that draws icons for minimized windows on
your desktop. It works in conjunction with various window managers or
desktop drawing programs. It allows windows to be identified by position
rather than with a taskbar and also provides the ability to group windows
together so that when a window is shown or hidden, so are all the windows
in its group. A graphical configuration dialog is provided for editing the
icons' appearance.
Changes: This release makes all the icon frames the same size. It also
fixes a bug where window managers (like Metacity) that show an animation
when a window is hidden would display the animation in the wrong place the
first time the icon was shown.

[004] - beancounter 0.8.2
by Dirk Eddelbuettel (http://freshmeat.net/users/eddelbuettel/)
Sun, Sep 25th 2005 02:30
Office/Business :: Financial
Office/Business :: Financial :: Investment
About: beancounter enables stockmarket data analysis and performance
evaluation. It has two main modes. The first is data gathering - both
current data (e.g. closing prices, high, low, volume etc.) and historical
price data can be retrieved efficiently using multiple securities per
requests, and stored in an SQL database (PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQLite are
supported) via easy command line operations. The second mode is data
analysis, based on the previously stored data. This comprises various
performance reports, as well as a Value-at-Risk analysis. beancounter is
implemented as a Perl module, and a Perl command-line frontend to the
module. It supports different stock markets from around the globe, foreign
exchange rates, US mutual funds, and US options.
Changes: A new "--splitby" command has been added to adjust historical
data, as well as new tests to ensure data sanity for splits. Market
capital displayed has been corrected for smaller capitalization stocks.
The example portfolio in setup_beancounter is now US-only, as Yahoo! no
longer supplies reliable FX quotes for key currencies.

[005] - Block Rage 0.2.2
by Sea Duck (http://freshmeat.net/users/seaduck/)
Sun, Sep 25th 2005 14:00
Games/Entertainment :: Arcade
About: Block Rage is a falling blocks arcade game with a 2-player hotseat
mode. You control three-tiled blocks falling from the top of the screen.
Your aim is to make the tiles explode by placing three of the same type in
a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row. Inflicting chain reactions earns
you more points. In the 2-player hotseat mode, it will also send your
opponent an unpleasant surprise.
Changes: Serious bugs from the initial release have been fixed: crashing
upon entering the hall of fame, modifier keys not working while editing
your name, and SDL_QUIT events not being handled properly. Pathnames and
environment variables are now handled much more carefully. The build and
installation process has been enhanced, and should support Gentoo ebuilds
well.

Sun, Sep 25th 2005 05:32
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Ripping
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing
About: CD-Rchive2 is a complete revamp of the popular but now aged
CD-Rchive program. It is intended to be used with cdrecord-ProDVD,
cdda2wav, and mkisofs for the production of data and music CDs and data
DVDs. Built in tools allow cloning of a complete CD or DVD and writing
copies. A Boot Wizard will guide you through steps required to make a
bootable CD or DVD, write the code, and compile a binary menu program
which runs with isolinux.
Changes: Functionality was added when ripping tracks from CD to
automatically convert to .mp3 instead of .wav via a checkbox on the .wav
tab page. This requires lame to be installed. A problem of occassional
incorrect audio device specification on single device machines such as
laptops was fixed.

[015] - delsafe 0.0.71
by psds (http://freshmeat.net/users/psdasilva/)
Sun, Sep 25th 2005 02:17
About: delsafe is a set of utilities to hopefully allow you to recover
recently deleted files. Basically, when you delete or in certain cases
overwrite a file the original file is moved into a trash can. It does this
by overriding the original unlink, rename, open, and fopen library calls
using the Linux LD_PRELOAD mechanism. Trash cans are placed on top of each
mount point and are accessible by each user directly or through links
placed in the user's home directory. This makes deletion very fast
because, in fact, it is only a renaming. To each filename in the trash can
is appended a time/version stamp.
Changes: A bug that prevented delsafe_clean from deleting links to
directories was fixed.

Desktop Environment
Desktop Environment :: Window Managers :: Window Maker
About: Dyne:bolic GNU/Linux is a live bootable distribution, an operating
system which works directly from the CD without the need to install or
change anything on the hard disk. It is user-friendly, recognizes your
hardware devices (sound, video, firewire, and USB), and offers a vast
range of software for multimedia production, streaming, 3D modeling,
photo, peer-to-peer filesharing, Web browsing and publishing, word
processing, email, encryption, and networking. It also includes games and
a world navigator. It does automatic clustering, joining the CPU power
between any other dyne:bolic on the local network, and works on modded
XBOX consoles as well.
Changes: Scripts have been completely rewritten, binaries have been all
recompiled including the latest GNU/Linux core technologies, and all
components have been refactored to be modular and customizable. Dyne:II
contains the SDK needed to develop itself, has support for more hardware,
is extensible thru drop-in modules, is mult-iuser, has advanced thin
client functionalities, and a new framebuffer mode, and still works with a
minimum of a Pentium MMX with 64MB RAM -- and even less without X.

by Dr MindHacker (http://freshmeat.net/users/darklogic/)
Sun, Sep 25th 2005 02:15
Security :: Cryptography
About: EverCrack is a cryptanalysis engine. The overall design goal is to
systematically break down complex ciphers into their simplex components for
cryptanalysis (by the kernel). The kernel consists of an algebraic design
(comparison and reduction) for breaking uniliteral, monoalphabetic ciphers
instantaneously. Currently, it can break a 4000-word cipher in
milliseconds. EverCrack currently has multi-language support for the user
interface and cracking encryption in other language dictionaries (English,
German, French, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, Dutch, and Portuguese).
Changes: The "statword" utility was added for analyzing the frequency
distribution of words by length in ciphertext.

by Matthias Andree (http://freshmeat.net/users/mandree/)
Sun, Sep 25th 2005 19:04
Communications :: Email
About: Fetchmail is a free, full-featured, robust, well-documented
remote-mail retrieval and forwarding utility intended to be used over
on-demand TCP/IP links (such as SLIP or PPP connections). It supports
every remote-mail protocol now in use on the Internet: POP2, POP3, RPOP,
APOP, KPOP, all flavors of IMAP, and ESMTP ETRN. It can even support IPv6
and IPSEC.
Changes: The --service option was revived. SSL socket setup problems now
result in a socket error (not an auth error as before). getaddrinfo()
errors are logged. A bogus service name resolver error was fixed. The
config dump now properly describes the --envelope setting. The
documentation was updated. envelope <num> Delivered-To was fixed. Build
problems on newer Mac OS X, Solaris (with --disable-nls), FreeBSD 4
(Kerberos IV), and systems where SSL requires -ldl were resolved.

can be run under real mode DOS. It also has many new features. For
example, it can be booted through BOOT.INI of Windows (grldr) and kexec of
Linux (grub.exe). The disk emulation feature is another enhancement over
GNU GRUB, and can be used to run legacy DOS/Windows9x systems with floppy
or hard disk images.
Changes: A commandline option, --config-file="FILENAME_OR_RAW_COMMANDS",
was added for GRUB.EXE which causes GRUB.EXE to be treated as a Linux
kernel. A bug which causes installation failure when BOOTLACE.COM is used
for large disks was fixed.

by Michael Holzt (http://freshmeat.net/users/kju/)
Sun, Sep 25th 2005 23:18
Internet
System :: Networking
About: gwhois is a generic whois client (and server) which strives to
know the right server to query for each and every top level domain and IP
address. You can ask gwhois about a domain or IP address, and it will
automatically forward your query to the appropriate server. It even
queries whois servers that can only be reached by a Web form, and outputs
the results as text. It can be used as a client or as a relaying server,
so you can use your normal whois client to ask gwhois.
Changes: The .com, .net, .ae, .az, .ly, .pr, and .jp domains were updated
and fixed. The .jobs, .travel, and .eu domains were added. Looking up "tld
xx" shows the IANA listing for the given TLD. The query string is no longer
forced to lower case, thus allowing the addition of flags like "-B" to RIPE
queries. IPv6 block 2a01::/23 (RIPE) was added.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Jeff's Java Scanf Library is an implementation of the C-Runtime
scanf, fscanf, and sscanf functions. The syntax of format strings is very
similar (%*s, %3d, etc.) to that of the standard C implementation of
scanf. Instead of taking wrapper objects, all scanf functions return an
Object[], whose types can be inferred from the format string.
Changes: Javadocs and packaging have been added. All classes are now
members of the com.bleugris.io package. %c and %s can now be qualified
with a [] pattern or a [^] pattern. The old manner of parsing has been
replaced with the java.util.regex package. One may now force the
conversion type to an applicable wrapper (e.g. force %d to return a
java.lang.Short), or still allow for default conversion.

About: libtrash is a shared library which implements a trash can on

Changes: A work-around necessary due to an undocumented "feature" in GNU

that was returned.

About: MemAid is like a traditional flashcard program to help you memorize

This means that your learning process becomes much more efficient, because
the neural network gradually adapts to your personal memory model.

corruption when switching databases or doing XML import/export was fixed.
The font setting is honored in the input and edit dialogs. The code was

use spreadsheet-like grids on a Web site. It is both flexible and
powerful, with a rich set of features and an easy to use API for the
developer. OS3Grid works well with Mozilla 1.6+, Internet Explorer 5.5+,
and FireFox.
Changes: New methods "get_row_attrs()" and "set_row_attr()" enable the
developer to hide application specific row attributes inside the row
structure. These attributes are always available and tightly bound to the
row, allowing the developer to implement special features. See the example
"Using OS3Grid to Edit a Dataset" for an advenced demo. The new method
"get_col_attrs()" enables the developer to inspect cell information.

About: Process Change Detection System is a script to monitor changes in
processes--not to monitor if your Web server is still running, but to see
if there are new programs running. When debugging a honeypot logging, you
often see that there's an extra inetd running, to open up a backdoor port.
Or, less dramatically, people login to a system and "forget" to logout.

Text Processing :: Linguistic
About: Redet (Regular Expression Development and Execution Tool) is a tool
for developing and executing regular expressions using any of more than 20
search programs, editors, and programming languages. For each program in
each locale a palette showing the available regular expression constructs
is provided. The features of each program are determined by running a test
suite, which guarantees that they will be correct for the particular
program version and the user's locale. Executed expressions are recorded
in a history list, from which entries may be copied to the regular
expression window with a mouse click. This allows complex regular
expressions to be developed in pieces. It fully supports UTF-8 Unicode as
long as the underlying program does.
Changes: This release contains numerous small feature enhancements,
especially in the configuration system. More things are configurable,
including all of the program-specific settings. Custom character widgets
may be defined within the init file (with no reference to external files).
The current configuration may be saved to a file that will recreate it when
read as an init file.

[089] - WP Clipart 0.2
by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
Sun, Sep 25th 2005 02:51
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Text Processing :: General
About: WP Clipart is an attempt to make a useful clipart package of public
domain images for use in word processors. It contains nearly 5,000 pieces
of non-transparent PNG clip art, which is exactly what AbiWord prints and
scales well. It has been optimized for use in all word processors (scaled
down, midtones expanded for inkjet print quality, etc.) It is suitable for
documents as well as Web graphics, but also has business application
(credit cards, promo graphics) and educational uses (pictures of all US
presidents, all country flags, all US states, sign language alphabet).
Changes: A cross-platform image viewer with a copy-to-clipboard function
was added. It shows a thumbnail (up to 240x240 pixels) and keeps the
original proportions. It allows pasting on Windows and also into AbiWord
and the Gimp on Linux. The viewer is written in Python with wxWidgets, but
it is distributed with the clipart as precompiled executables for Linux and
Windows, so dependencies should not be a problem. The clipart itself was
further expanded and somewhat reorganized. Images of clothes, tools,
art/paintings, and several categories were added.
