Internet :: Log Analysis
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: apachegrep helps you search your Apache common/combined logs for
various bits of information. Built in the spirit of Unix tools, it's
designed to be used standalone or as part of a pipeline of tools to go
over logs and print entire lines, specified fields, or a simple count of
matching lines. You specify which field you want and what regular
expression you want applied to that field.

  Fri, Sep 30th 2005 13:59

Text Editors :: Emacs
Text Editors :: Word Processors
Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: AUCTeX is a much-enhanced (La)TeX environment for Emacs and part of
the GNU project.

Changes: The most important feature is the inclusion of the preview-latex
subsystem, previously available separately. The installation procedures
now also install startup files as part of the process (those had to be
copied manually previously). You are advised to remove previous
installations of AUCTeX and preview-latex before starting the installation
procedure. A standard installation from an unmodified tarball no longer
requires Makeinfo or Perl. Several minor feature enhancements have been
added.

[006] - compileAndGo 4.1
  by Dave Yost (http://freshmeat.net/users/DaveYost/)
  Fri, Sep 30th 2005 10:54

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: compileAndGo is two things: a #! program to wrap compiled-language
source code into a script, and a shell command to compile and run source
code in one step. It caches the executable file or files out of sight and
does make-like automatic recompilation. Wrapping source code in
#!compileAndGo combines the convenience of a script-like executable source
file with the benefits of a compiled language.

Changes: This release can pipe source code into the new cgs variant of the
cg command. Mozilla Rhino JavaScript support has been added. Optional
automatic cache cleaning has been added. The commandName parameter is now
optional. this release uses ~/.TemporaryItems/ on the Mac. Line numbers
are preserved.

About: Firmwareagent adds a function to the FreeBSD kernel that can be
used by other modules to automatically obtain firmware images. Typically,
modules incorporate firmware in their code, which causes legal issues and
wastes memory. Firmwareagent addresses these problems by retreiving the
firmware from the filesystem (other locations can be transparently added).
It is used by the p54u driver.

Changes: This release fixes the random "panic: vrele negative ref cnt" on
system shutdown.

[011] - Fjavac 0.3.0
  by Stephen Tse (http://freshmeat.net/users/stephent/)
  Fri, Sep 30th 2005 01:11

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Fjavac is a Java 5 compiler front-end implemented in the functional
language OCaml. Currently, the compiler can parse and pretty-print almost
all source code for the JDK 1.4.2 and JDK 1.5.0 versions of the language
(including generics, wildcards, annotations, enumerations, static imports,
for-each loops, and variable arity arguments). A full compiler (with type
inference, capture conversion, and type checking) is underway.

Changes: The compiler can now parse and pretty-print almost all of the
source code supported by JDK 1.4.2 and JDK 1.5.0, including generics,
wildcards, annotations, enumerations, static imports, for-each loops, and
variable arity arguments.

About: Guido van Robot, or GvR for short, is a minimalistic programming
language that provides just enough syntax to help students learn the
concepts of sequencing, conditional branching, looping, and procedural
abstraction. Its biggest strength is that it permits this learning in an
environment that combines the thrill of problem-solving with instant
visual feedback.

Changes: Many bugs related to the syntax localization were fixed in the

[014] - HTTP extension for PHP 0.14.1
  by Michael Wallner (http://freshmeat.net/users/_mike_/)
  Fri, Sep 30th 2005 08:29

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: HTTP extension for PHP allows building absolute URIs, RFC-compliant
HTTP redirects, RFC-compliant HTTP date handling, parsing of HTTP headers
and messages, caching by "Last-Modified" and/or ETag (with an 'on the fly'
option for ETag generation from buffered output), sending
data/files/streams with (multiple) ranges, negotiating user-preferred
language/charset, and convenient request functionality built upon libcurl.
PHP5 classes: HttpUtil, HttpResponse (PHP-5.1), HttpRequest,
HttpRequestPool, and HttpMessage.

Changes: This release adds ETag hashing through PHP's CRC32()
implementation, HTTP_ETAG_MHASH_*, HttpMessage::TYPE_*,
HttpRequest::AUTH_*, HttpRequest::METH_*, and HttpResponse::ETAG_*
constants, the missing HttpMessage::setBody(), missing support for raw
post data in HttpRequest, and a new language/charset negotiator. It
changes HttpMessage::toString([include_parent = true]) to false and
renames HTTP_GET constants to HTTP_METH_GET. It fixes PHP-5.0 building and
protected property access. php_info() now shows supported ETag hash
algorithms.

About: The Informa RSS Library provides a convenient Java API for handling
news channels and metadata about them. Different syntax formats (like RSS
0.91, 1.0 [RDF], 2.0, and Atom 0.3) for feeds are supported. There is also
basic support for channel information descriptions (OPML). A full-text
engine (Lucene) can be used for indexing and searching the news items. Two
backends for storing the data are currently provided: In-Memory and
Hibernate (which allows you to persist news items into allmost any JDBC
compliant database).

Changes: Support for the Atom 0.3 news feed syntax has been improved. The
poller and cleaner worker threads are now daemons. Session locking in
HibernateUtil has been reworked to improve thread safety. Many more
improvements to the Poller module. Many small bugs related to encoding
problems have been fixed. The JDOM library has been updated from b10 to

  Fri, Sep 30th 2005 14:02

Communications
Information Management
Information Management :: Records Management

About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex query
language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to search through
pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language enables users to
perform far more complex queries than what common search engines currently
support. It can be fed any custom sources, since its abstraction layer
manages the search results and their meta tags in a uniform way. In
conjunction with the local process scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan
enables you to save your requests and replay them later automatically; new
results are sent through email and RSS in realtime. Magellan also provides
full anonymity through smart multi-proxy support.

Changes: A new driver for the Google Blog search engine has been added.
The cluster selection parameters can now be saved for later use; these
parameters also apply to email alerts and RSS feeds, in order to strip
irrelevant results before sending them to the alert subscribers. A few
minor bugs have been fixed in the GUI.

The threaded implementation has handled graphs of up to one million nodes
within hours, and is widely used in the field of protein family analysis.
It comes with a wide range of sibling utilities for handling and analyzing
graphs, matrices, and clusterings.

Changes: mcl now has better dump modes and iterand analysis capabilities

no longer requires the macro processor zoem by default, and many sibling
analysis applications have received minor improvements.

[033] - NetTraf 1.4.0
  by Rangel Reale (http://freshmeat.net/users/rangelreale/)
  Fri, Sep 30th 2005 11:17

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: NetTraf consists of a daemon that gets information from a Linux
interface and sends it on the network to NetTraf clients. Clients then can
use the information to show to the user how the connection is performing.
This program is mostly useful with dial-up connections on a masqueraded
server, so all users on the network know when the connection is active,
and if there is too much traffic on the line. This package DOES NOT comes
with any client applications; you can find them on the homepage. The
author needs help to develop a Linux client.

Changes: This release adds password support (the PASS command). The
password can be changed in the ./src/connections.c file; the default
password is "nettraf". The client can display the current IP of the
selected interface (using the IPADDR command).

and fits in most MTA configurations. A key feature is the non-standard,
generic administration hierarchy which not only seperates "normal users"
from "administrators", but enables the mailserver-master to create
instances between them. You will be able to let other users create their
own sub-users and thus either share a single mail server between different
