[002] - aMule 2.1.0
  by Kry (http://freshmeat.net/users/ElKry/)
  Sun, Jan 1st 2006 21:36

Communications :: File Sharing

About: aMule is short for "all-platform eMule-like file-sharing program",
or, in short, "all-platform Mule". It's a port of the well-known eMule P2P
client for the eDonkey2000 and Kad file sharing networks, supporting most
of eMule's features. Additionally, it provides a small separate Web server
and command line interface to connect to a running aMule via the network.

Changes: This release includes the expected support for Kad network, a PHP
Web server, and a lot of new features and bugfixes, along with CPU and
memory improvements. This is a major stable release, and everyone should
upgrade.

[003] - Botan 1.5.0 (Development)
  by Jack Lloyd (http://freshmeat.net/users/randombit/)
  Sun, Jan 1st 2006 16:49

Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Botan is a library of cryptographic algorithms written in C++. It
includes a wide selection of block and stream ciphers, public key
algorithms, hash functions, and message authentication codes. It has an
easy-to-use filter interface and supports many common industry standards,
including X.509v3.

Changes: This is the first release in the new development tree, forked
from the 1.4.11 stable-tree release. It restructures the library internals
to be more maintainable and flexible; a number of APIs have changed as a
result. The most important changes are that all global/shared library
state is now stored in a single object, and caller applications now have
the ability to control how Botan is initialized in a very fine grained
way. The SEAL, ISAAC, and HAVAL algorithms, all previously deprecated,
have been removed.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: BrowserLauncher2 is a library that facilitates opening a browser
from a Java application and directing the browser to a supplied URL. In
most cases, the browser opened will be the user's default browser.

Changes: This release adds support for SunOS, corrects problems with
Windows 98 support, and adds support for dynamic browser detection on the
Windows platform.

Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Libraries

About: BuGLe is a tool for debugging applications that use OpenGL. It
supports the validation of calls, breakpoints on calls or sets of calls,
examination of state, logging of calls, and more.

Changes: This release greatly improves the texture viewer in gldb-gui, as
well as fixing a number of bugs. It also fixes a buggy shortcut that
caused all kinds of havoc with ATI drivers. If previous releases have
caused weird problems when using an ATI card (whether with gldb, gldb-gui,
or a filter), this release will probably fix it.

  Sun, Jan 1st 2006 06:12

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: The ccontrol program takes over the roles of the compiler and
linker, and reads a configuration file to decide what to do before
invoking them. This is particularly useful for centralized control over
commands and options, such as enabling distcc(1) and ccache(1).

Changes: Debian packaging and the config.status file were removed from the
tarball.

  Sun, Jan 1st 2006 19:48

Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: ColorExplorer is a tool for exploring the color space and finding
out how colors, color names, and numerical color specifications are
related. The user can specify a color by selecting its name from a list of
color names, by adjusting sliders that control the mixture of red, green,
and blue, or by entering a numerical color specification. The numerical
specification of the current color and an example of that color are shown
in a pair of adjacent boxes. The color name list may be searched by
entering a regular expression or by requesting the closest match to the
current numerical color specification. A random color may also be
generated.

Changes: The numerical color specification may now be selected and pasted
elsewhere. The user may now choose between hexadecimal and decimal color
specifications. The interface has been reorganized a bit and made more
colorful.

  Sun, Jan 1st 2006 08:13

Communications
System :: Hardware
Utilities

About: E-Badge Ticker is a tool for programming LED name badges using an
IR (infrared) transmitter under GNU/Linux. It should work without major
changes on almost all other Unix variants. This software has been created
for the inFactory E-Badge IR sold by the German hardware/software/etc.
supplier PEARL Agency. As the PEARL brand inFactory seems to be OEM
reselling this product, it is very likely that this program will work for
other devices.

System :: Archiving

About: Genetic Algorithm File Fitter (gaffitter) is a command-line tool
that uses a genetic algorithm to extract subsets of an input list of files
and directories that best fit a given volume size such as a CD or DVD. This
is used to find different combinations of the files on the list such that
lost space will be minimized.

Changes: This version implements a direct input mode, allowing the user to
enter "size identifier" pairs directly instead of file/dir names. Two new
genetic operators were introduced, resulting in an expressive genetic
algorithm improvement. There were also some minor changes and bugfixes.

About: Geolog is a Perl script (and Windows executable) that you can use
to download all the information from the geocaching Web site
geocaching.com about your own caches, your found caches, and the ones you
missed. It also works incrementally, so after having initially downloaded
everything, the next time only the new caches will be downloaded. The
scripts works under Linux/Unix as well as under Windows (using
ActivePerl). You can also generate HTML pages from the downloaded
information in a rather flexible way by using templates.

Changes: The pre-fork server model was improved for higher traffic.
Extensible architecture improvements allow more customization. It is now
easy to attach HTML and files to email. Outgoing mail is now intercepted
in development mode. Cart triggers were added. Internal XHTML support was
improved. A new $Row object was added for the current list row in embedded
Perl. A new demo application, called "Standard", was added. More payment
gateways are supported, including an interface to CPAN's
Business::OnlinePayment. More languages are supported in the admin UI.
Many other feature enhancements and bugfixes were made.

[031] - kbarcode 1.9.9 (Development)
  by Dominik Seichter (http://freshmeat.net/users/domseichter/)
  Sun, Jan 1st 2006 06:21

Office/Business
Printing

About: KBarcode is a barcode and label printing application for KDE 3. It
can be used to print everything from simple business cards up to complex
labels with several barcodes, such as article descriptions. KBarcode comes
with an easy-to-use WYSIWYG label designer, a setup wizard, batch import of
labels (directly from the delivery note), thousands of predefined labels,
database managment tools, and translations in many languages. Even
printing more than 10,000 labels in one go is no problem for KBarcode.
Additionally, it is a simple xbarcode replacement for the creation of
barcodes. All major types of barcodes like EAN, UPC, CODE39, and ISBN are
supported.

Changes: This release finally includes complete KDE addressbook support.
The KDE addressbook can now be used as data source for batch printing. All
addressbook fields are available as variables in KBarcode. The CSV to SQL
import was fixed, as was importing CSV files containing the separator
character in a quoted area. Additionally, it is now possible to specify
the encoding of CSV data.

About: mlocate is a new locate implementation. The "m" stands for
"merging", because updatedb reuses the existing database to avoid
rereading most of the file system, which makes updatedb faster and does
not trash the system caches as much. The locate(1) utility is intended to
be completely compatible to slocate. It also attempts to be compatible to

[041] - ntpdate 0.1.1
  by Robert Scheck (http://freshmeat.net/users/rosch/)
  Sun, Jan 1st 2006 08:07

System :: Networking :: Time Synchronization
System :: Systems Administration

About: ntpdate is a simple and small replacement for the homonymous and
obsolete tool from the ISC NTP package. ntpdate sets the local date and
time by polling the Network Time Protocol (NTP) server(s) given as the
server argument to determine the correct time. It must be run as root on
the local host. It is not meant for real time synchronization.

Changes: The offset tolerance was changed to +- 125 ms, but the number of
retries was reduced to avoid possible flooding of the time servers. The
cron job now handles non-Red Hat/Fedora Core systems better, and queries
current time servers.

[042] - nut 11.1
  by Jim Jozwiak (http://freshmeat.net/users/jozwiak/)
  Sun, Jan 1st 2006 04:53

Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 18, which contains 7,146 foods and
136 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals, fats,
calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the essential
polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are expressed
as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of food labeling
in the United States, but also can be fully customized. Foods can be added
from recipes or food labels, and nutrient intake can be graphed. The
program is completely menu-driven and there are no commands to learn.

Changes: This release includes a new way to change food quantities in
meals and recipes. Without deleting the food and finding it again in the
database, you can use an optional argument with the number of the food to
change the quantity. This can speed up data entry and works especially
well for editing customary meals to the quantities of the actual meal.
