  by Sasha Vasko (http://freshmeat.net/users/sashav/)
  Tue, Jan 10th 2006 07:50

Desktop Environment :: Window Managers

About: AfterStep is a Window Manager for X which started by emulating the
NeXTSTEP look and feel, but which has been significantly altered according
to the requests of various users. Many adepts will tell you that NeXTSTEP
is not only the most visually pleasant interface, but also one of the most
functional and intuitive out there. AfterStep aims to incorporate the
advantages of the NeXTSTEP interface, and add additional useful features.

Changes: New features include KDE/GTK application theming, ASRun, menu
hooks for xscreensaver, and hooks for KDE and GNOME apps via systemwide
desktop categories. Sliced images and fullscreen windows are supported.

[003] - AutoGen 5.8.1
  by Bruce Korb (http://freshmeat.net/users/bkorb/)
  Tue, Jan 10th 2006 22:52

Other/Nonlisted Topic
Software Development
Software Development :: Build Tools

About: AutoGen is a tool designed for generating program files that
contain repetitive text with varied substitutions. Its goal is to simplify
the maintenance of programs that contain large amounts of repetitious text.
This is especially valuable if there are several blocks of such text that
must be kept synchronized. Output is specified with a Scheme-enhanced
output template. Input, if required by your template, may come from
AutoGen definitions, CGI data, or XML files.

Changes: The program now builds against the Guile 1.7.x series. Major
changes were made. libtool 1.5.22 is now used. A new version of AutoOpts
was incorporated.

[004] - Automated Argument Helper 1.1.1
  by Scott McKellar (http://freshmeat.net/users/mck9/)
  Tue, Jan 10th 2006 05:59

About: Aargh is a code generator written in C++. Based on specifications
defined in an XML file, it generates C or C++ code to parse a command
line, using the getopt() facility available in Unix, Linux, and similar
environments. It supports command line options with integer arguments,
string arguments, and no arguments. It optionally applies range tests to
validate the option arguments, or calls a user-defined validation
function. The generated code is commented and carefully indented for
readability.

Changes: If a file name supplied by the XML input file does not contain a
period, aargh now adds a period and a default extension: "h" for a header
file, "c" for C, and "C" for C++. From the aargh command line, you can
specify different defaults such as "cpp" or "hpp". With this feature, you
can use a single XML file for C or C++ without editing it to change the
file names.

About: AutoOpts is an integrated part of AutoGen. Based on a very simple
option description file, it will process configuration files, environment
variables, command line options, text strings passed by client programs,
and will make the results easily accessible to the client program. It will
also produce a man page and the info-doc invoking section automatically.

Changes: Licensing was clarified for the tear-off library: it is now LGPL
or BSD at the user's choice. OPT_mumble_VAL2STR() will map a mumble enum
value into a string.

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents
Communications :: Email :: Mailing List Servers

About: AXIGEN is a fast, reliable and secure mail server with an open
architecture. It is designed for easy management and allows full control
of the email traffic from a central Web/CLI admin module. AXIGEN provides
ESMTP, IMAP, and POP3 services and has been tested with standard mail
clients. A special Webmail module enables email access and delivery from
Web browsers. During the evaluation period, users are provided with full
technical support.

Changes: allowStarttls is set to "no", instead of "yes". The default value
has been changed as a workaround for an issue regarding initiating a SSL
connection to an AXIGEN mail serever with no SSL certificate or an invalid
SSL certificate. In this scenario, present commercial versions of AXIGEN
will respond with "connect error".

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: BalanceNG is a modern software IP load balancing solution. It is
small, fast, and easy to use and setup. It offers session persistence,
different distribution methods (Round Robin, Random, Hash, and Least
Resource) and a customizable UDP health check agent in source code. It
supports VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) to set up high
availability configurations on multiple nodes. It integrates pcap packet
dumping for debugging purposes and allows the implementation of a
"transparent forensic logging bridge". It supports "all service load
balancing" based on client IP address which allows almost any protocol to
be supported. It supports single legged operations, either on IP-Level or
as DSR (Direct Server Return / "nPath") configuration.

Changes: The MAC address determination of local clients has been changed
from ARP to "passive learning". Customers with larger numbers of local
clients (over 1000) should upgrade.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Campsite is a multilingual content management system (CMS) for news
Web sites. Campsite's user interface was built with the end user
(journalist, editor, publisher) in mind, and it can be configured to suit
different profiles of end users. Campsite follows the print-newspaper
publishing paradigm, so it structures sites by default as Publications >
Issues > Sections > Articles. Campsite works best for medium-to-large-size
online news publications, but it is capable of handling nimbler sites too.

Changes: Major improvements were made to the backend interface, including
simplified article editing and bulk management of articles. It is now
possible to attach files to articles, which can be displayed on the
frontend and be downloaded by subscribers. An object-oriented API was
added so that you can write your own custom plugins.

orders to be closed at a customer's residence so that they can be
presented with a bill at the time of service. You can also create new work
orders, add new customers, and assign work orders to employees from any
location.

Changes: Major updates were made to all components. Update capability was
added so that reinstallation is no longer necessary. Authorize.net is now
used for credit card billing in addition to PayPal integration. A parts
system for work orders was integrated. Parts can be purchased and shipped
to your location from one of twelve sites, and there is no parts database
or inventory to maintain. It uses an API from In-cite CRM to display parts
list and process orders. Over 9000 computer parts are in stock.

[015] - cryptmount 0.1
  by rwpenney (http://freshmeat.net/users/rwpenney/)
  Tue, Jan 10th 2006 06:02

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Filesystems

About: cryptmount is a utility for GNU/Linux operating systems which
allows an ordinary user to mount an encrypted filesystem. cryptmount was
written to address differences between the capabilities of the loopback
device and the newer, preferred, device-mapper mechanisms of the 2.6
kernel series, which make it more difficult for a non-root user to
configure the devices necessary for access to an encrypted filesystem.
After the initial configuration of the encrypted filesystem, an ordinary
user can mount and unmount the filesystem on demand, solely by providing
the decryption password.

Changes: Mechanisms were added for updating /etc/mtab on mounting or
unmounting. Support for systems using 2.4-kernel headers was improved. The
software is now considered to be in beta testing.

even PINs and passwords, using encryption. It can also be used to
"mind-map" larger compositions like manuals, Web pages, articles, etc. It
is a bit like the KDE program "kjots", but uses the GTK library and
supports a hierarchy of folders. Files can be output to HTML with an
automatic table of contents or to docbook XML. Encryption is supported
with ccrypt(1), gpg(1), and openssl(1), so that musings can be kept
private.

[030] - Instant-Grid 0.2.1
  by Christian Boehme (http://freshmeat.net/users/cboehme/)
  Tue, Jan 10th 2006 06:11

Software Development :: Testing
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Instant-Grid is a Knoppix-based live-CD bundled with a
pre-configured grid environment based on the Globus Toolkit. One PC
started from this CD becomes the Instant-Grid frontend. It also functions
as a PXE boot-server, allowing other PCs in the same local network to boot
the Instant-Grid environment. Together with the frontend, these PCs
automatically form a working test grid. Like with the original Knoppix,
the existing configuration of the participating PC is not touched (except
maybe for enabling the PXE boot-option), and remains instantly available
by a simple reboot.

Changes: Instant-Grid 0.2.1 is based on Knoppix 4.0.2 and Globus Toolkit
4.0.1. During the boot time, all the necessary services are configured
automatically (terminal server setup, Globus services, X.509 certificate
authority, and signed X.509 end entity certificates, etc). The "knoppix"
user is allowed to use the grid services without manual configuration.

  Tue, Jan 10th 2006 23:37

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: SilentJack is a silence/dead air detector for the Jack Audio
Connection Kit. It monitors the peak levels on a single JACK input port
and checks to see if they are below a specified theshold. It then runs a
command after silence has been detected for a given number of seconds. It
then waits for the command to finish and then waits for a grace period
before detecting silence again.

Internet
Software Development
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: Spines is a generic messaging infrastructure that provides
transparent unicast and multicast communication over dynamic, multi-hop
networking environments, providing automatic reconfiguration and network
topology flexibility. It is useful for deploying overlay networks in the
Internet, to achieve additional services not available in the current
networking infrastructure (e.g. overlay multicast), as well as improved
performance for existing services. It creates generic network topologies
with dynamic link characteristics (bandwidth, latency, loss rate, and
burstiness) on regular computer clusters. It creates a logical LAN over
unorganized, multi-hop wireless and hybrid networks.

Changes: Support was added for creating arbitrary network topologies with
custom link characteristics (bandwidth, latency, loss rate) on regular
computer clusters.

Education
Internet
Scientific/Engineering

About: Frink is a calculating tool and programming language designed to
help you in the real world. It tracks units of measurement throughout all
calculations and ensures that answers are correct. It converts between
systems of measurement and has a huge library of physical data. It handles
conversions between time zones, currencies, and historical values of the
U.S. dollar and the British pound, translates between several languages,
does date/time math, and more.

Changes: To work around bugs in Sun's Java implementations, the Swing GUI
for Frink now requires Java 1.5 or later. Java Web Start files were
altered to try and work around bugs in Sun's implementations where the
latest JVM might not be used. In addition, a trial Dashboard Widget for
the Mac was released.

[068] - The TagMogrifier library for PHP 0.2.1
  by Manuel Amador (Rudd-O) (http://freshmeat.net/users/ruddo/)
  Tue, Jan 10th 2006 12:11

Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: The purpose of the Tagmogrifier library is to let you perform fast
and easy-to-program transformations on XML documents. Instead of having to
write your own parser, or directly using the PHP DOM parser, and having to
write your own tree walker and such, you only need to instantiate a class,
add a few match expressions, and assign a function to process every XML
element that matches, DOM-style.

Changes: This release fixes a bug which prevented parsing of XML with
unknown entities.

[069] - Tor 0.1.1.11-alpha (Testing)
  by Martin Balvers (http://freshmeat.net/users/nosferatu/)
  Tue, Jan 10th 2006 23:04

Communications
Internet
Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups
to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. It also enables
software developers to create new communication tools with built-in
privacy features. It provides the foundation for a range of applications
that allow organizations and individuals to share information over
public networks without compromising their privacy. Individuals can use
it to keep remote Websites from tracking them and their family members.
They can also use it to connect to resources such as news sites or
instant messaging services that are blocked by their local Internet
service providers (ISPs).

Changes: This release implements entry guard nodes: it automatically
chooses a handful of entry nodes and sticks with them for all circuits.
Directory bandwidth overhead was substantially reduced. Servers with
dynamic IP addresses are now useful again. IRC and IM connections over Tor
are now more reliable.
