[001] - ATA over Ethernet driver 20 (For Linux 2.6)
by Ed Cashin at Coraid (http://freshmeat.net/users/ecashinCoraid/)
Thu, Jan 19th 2006 11:32
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Mirroring
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
About: This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet
(AoE) network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block
devices like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as
local device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).
Changes: The timer for a new AoE device is now activated only once.

System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: The ATA over Ethernet Tools are intended for use in conjunction
with an ATA over Ethernet (AoE) driver for a Linux 2.6 kernel. They
perform simple tasks like listing available devices, triggering device
discovery, and restricting the network interfaces on which AoE is
performed.
Changes: The aoe-revalidate command now reports errors to the user.

[003] - BitEvolution 1.0.0
by Scott Gillette (http://freshmeat.net/users/scottagillette/)
Thu, Jan 19th 2006 23:26
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: BitEvolution is an easy-to-use client/server application that you
can use to keep your distributed application up to date. Modeled after the
Apache ANT project, it is a task-based application intended to eliminate
the work required to write, test, and debug a home-grown update
application. Your distributed application does not have to be written in
Java to take advantage of BitEvolution.
Changes: A new feature was added to the Client application to allow it to
start a specified application when an update check is complete. A new
attribute was added to the client properties file, which indicates if the
client should run in silent mode. Updater.getCurrentVersion() and
Updater.setTimoutDuration(int) were added. The Updater class was updated
to request multiple file "chunks" at a time. An issue where files
specified in an update_file task that did not exist were not being
reported as not existing at server startup was fixed.

About: The Blue Frog is a client application that is a part of the Blue
Security Do Not Intrude Registry solution. It enables clients to easily
submit opt-out requests to spammers. Opt-out requests are published by
Blue Security based on human analyzed reported spam that originates from
user reports. The application is scriptable through Lua scripts using a
glue library. Effort has been put into implementing a sandbox Lua
environment that is isolated from any local IO related operations on the
running machine.

Information Management
About: Centre is a Web-based student information system. Centre has been
designed to address the most important needs of administrators, teachers,
support staff, parents, students, and clerical personnel. It also adds
many components not typically found in student information systems. Centre
boasts an intuitive interface to manage student demographic information,
perform complex scheduling, and manage student attendance, grades, and
eligibility. Centre greatly cuts down the time it takes to report to state
agencies and distribute student information to teachers, support staff, and
parents.
Changes: This release has been used by supported clients for some time
now. The number of bugfixes alone justified a major release, but lots of
enhancements were also made. Enhancements have been made to Users,
Attendance, Gradebook, Eligibility, Grades, Scheduling, Student
Demographic Information, and others.

[006] - Citadel 6.70
by Art Cancro (http://freshmeat.net/users/ajc/)
Thu, Jan 19th 2006 07:35
Communications :: BBS
Communications :: Chat
Communications :: Email
About: Citadel is an advanced messaging and collaboration system for
groupware and BBS applications. Users can connect to Citadel using any
telnet, WWW, or client software. Among the features supported are public
and private message bases (rooms), electronic mail, real-time chat,
paging, shared calendaring, address books, mailing lists, and more. Unlike
other collaboration servers, Citadel provides its own data stores and is
therefore extremely easy to install; you don't have to "bring your own"
email and database because they're built in. The server is multithreaded
and scalable. In addition, SMTP, IMAP, and POP3 servers are built-in for
easy connection to Internet mail. Citadel is both robust and mature; it
has been in production since 1987.
Changes: This release introduces message journaling, an important feature
that allows all messages and other communications to be recorded to a
destination chosen by the system administrator or compliance officer,
allowing Citadel systems to be used in environments which are required to
retain messages for compliance with industry regulations such as
Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA.

[007] - CoaSim 4.0.5
by Thomas Mailund (http://freshmeat.net/users/mailund_birc/)
Thu, Jan 19th 2006 23:17
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
About: CoaSim is a tool for simulating the coalescent process with
recombination and gene conversion under the assumption of exponential
population growth. It efficiently constructs the ancestral recombination
graph for a given number of individuals and uses this to simulate samples
of SNP and micro satellite haplotypes/genotypes. The generated sample can
afterwards be separated in cases and controls, depending on the states of
selected individual markers. The tool can accordingly also be used to
construct cases and control data sets for association studies.
Changes: Multi-marker disease models are now also available for phased
genotype data.

by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Thu, Jan 19th 2006 11:48
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: Most policy has been separated from conary proper, and moved
instead to the conary-policy package. This release features optional
rate-limiting for uploads and downloads.

by unrtst (http://freshmeat.net/users/unrtst/)
Thu, Jan 19th 2006 23:18
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Data.FormValidator's aim is to bring all the benefits of the Perl
module Data::FormValidator over to JavaScript, using the same input
profiles. They can be dumped into JavaScript objects using the Perl module
Data::JavaScript. Profiles declare the required and optional fields and any
constraints they might have. They may be shared between your backend Perl
code. Frontend JavaScript validation may be done, allowing for consistent
and thorough validation on both the backend and frontend. The results are
provided as an object, which makes it easy to handle missing and invalid
results, return error messages about which constraints failed, or process
the resulting valid data.
Changes: A problem where some functions were not terminated by a
semi-colon, so JavaScript compactors would end up creating broken code was
fixed.

About: JavaScript::Squish provides methods to compact Javascript source
down to only what is needed. It can remove all comments, put everything on
one line (semi-)safely, and remove extra whitespace. It breaks the process
down into individual steps, and one can pick and choose what parts to
complete to get a custom amount of compactness. It is distributed as a
Perl module and a handy bin script (so you don't need to know Perl to use

Thu, Jan 19th 2006 14:11
Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Utilities
About: KThinkBat is a laptop battery monitor for the KDE-Kicker. It is
inspired by the "Battery Maximizer" included with Levono (former IBM)
ThinkPads. Although there are allready some battery monitor applications
for the K-Desktop Environment, they ar mostly too small to see the current
battery charge at a glance. Features include display of current battery
strength as a percentage, and visually as a gauge, display of the current
online/offline state, and display of current power consumption. It has
support for a second battery. On ThinkPads, it can use the SMAPI BIOS
interface.
Changes: This release adds support for a second battery (via ACPI or the
ThinkPad-only SMAPI BIOS), and a different gauge fill color if the battery
reaches its (low) alarm capacity.

About: The libebt library provides a clean way of getting human-readable
backtrace messages in C++. It uses the RAII (resource acquisition is
initialization) idiom to manage backtrace stack items without requiring
macros, control structures, or an external debugger.
Changes: When using uClibc++, -pedantic will no longer be passed to the
compiler. Makefile.am now uses check_ rather than noinst_ for test
programs. libebt::Backtraceable<>'s template constructor now explicitly
asks for a reference to a string rather than letting the compiler pass by

by Kate Ward (http://freshmeat.net/users/sfsetse/)
Thu, Jan 19th 2006 06:55
System :: Logging
About: log4sh is a logging framework for shell scripts that works similar
to the other wonderful logging products available from the Apache Software
Foundataion (eg. log4j, log4perl). Although not as powerful as the others,
it can make the task of adding advanced logging to shell scripts easier,
and has much more power than just using simple "echo" commands throughout.
In addition, it can be configured from a properties file so that scripts in
a production environment do not need to be altered to change the amount of
logging they produce.
Changes: There are huge improvements in the documentation with this
release. All functions are now documented, and the main documentation has
been updated as well. Some more performance improvements were added. Some
older functions that were present in the 1.2 series are now added back for
backwards compatibility. Some bugs were fixed.

status such as 'unread', 'mark', 'color-label', and 'attachment' were
