[001] - A Simple Version Control System 0.8.8
  by Craig Spurrier (http://freshmeat.net/users/cspurrier/)
  Sun, Jan 29th 2006 11:53

Software Development
Software Development :: Version Control

About: A Simple Version Control System is an easy to install and easy to
to use version/revision control system. It differs from most other version
control systems in that it is designed to keep track of files in place. It
does not allow any changes to be made to files; all changes require the
users to change files externally with FTP or SSH access. It is very easy
to set up and use. Users do not need to work with repository, branches,
commit, and check-out files. All a user needs to do is upload the changes
files and click Update, or if enabled, just wait for it to be updated
automatically.

  Sun, Jan 29th 2006 17:00

System
System :: Systems Administration

About: AcpiTool is a Linux ACPI client. It's a small command line
application, intended to be a replacement for the apm tool. The primary
target audience are laptop users, since these people are most interested
in things like battery status, thermal status and the ability to suspend
(sleep mode). The program simply accesses the /proc/acpi or /sysfs entries
to get or set ACPI values. A computer running a Linux kernel from the 2.4.x
or 2.6.x series with ACPI enabled is needed. It also supports various
extensions for Toshiba, Asus, and IBM Thinkpad laptops.

Changes: This release also calculates an estimated total runtime left when
2 batteries are installed.

About: AQuoSA is an open architecture for the provisioning of Quality of
Service related functionality into the Linux kernel. The project features
a flexible, portable, and lightweight software architecture for supporting
QoS-related services on top of a general-purpose operating system as Linux.
The architecture is well founded on formal scheduling analysis and control
theoretical results. At the core of the software is an adaptive Resource
Reservation layer that is capable of dynamically adapting the CPU
allocation for QoS-aware applications based on its run-time requirements.

  by R. Bernstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/rocky/)
  Sun, Jan 29th 2006 11:55

Software Development :: Debuggers

About: Extended Python Debugger is a (slightly) more complete debugger for
Python than the stock pdb.py debugger. It supports a "restart" command and
stack traces that show fewer ?'s and give better information for exec
statements. Stepping/nexting skips over method/function "defs". It tries
to follow gdb's command set unless there is good reason not to.

Changes: A lot of important changes were made, and changes that will
facilitate growth and increase stability. The ability to do non-
interactive POSIX-shell line tracing was added. Documentation was added
and is greatly revised from pdb.py. Regression tests were added.

  Sun, Jan 29th 2006 16:47

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries

About: FFTW is a fast C FFT library. It includes complex, real, symmetric,
multidimensional, and parallel transforms, and can handle arbitrary array
sizes efficiently.It is typically faster than other freely available FFT
implementations, and is even competitive with vendor-tuned libraries
(benchmarks are available at the homepage). To achieve this performance,
it uses novel code generation and runtime self optimization techniques
(along with many other tricks).

Changes: Speed was improved. The code is now 64-bit clean. A time-limited
planner was added. Various compilation fixes were made.

About: FunionFS is a union filesystem for the FUSE driver that allows a
small read-write filesystem to be superimposed on read-only media such as
a CD-ROM. It is useful for live CD distributions or systems storing files
in a PROM or a compressed filesystem such as CRAMFS.

Changes: There are bugfixes when copying from the read-only filesystem to
the read-write one. This impacts the "mknod", "mkdir", "symlink",
"rename", and "link" functions. These functions are now working correctly
in any conditions. A bad bug in the "link" function has been fixed. When
doing "ls", the status of symbolically linked files was not correctly

Text Processing
Text Processing :: Filters
Text Processing :: General

About: glark offers grep-like searching of text files, with very powerful,
complex regular expressions (e.g., "/foo\w+/ and /bar[^\d]*baz$/ within 4
lines of each other"). It also highlights the matches, displays context
(preceding and succeeding lines), does case-insensitive matches, and
automatic exclusion of non-text files. It supports most options from the
GNU version of grep.

Changes: Refined so that --with-filename (-H) always results in the
filename being displayed, even if only one file is searched. Exit status
has been fixed to match that of grep.

About: Gmsh is an automatic 3D finite element grid generator (primarily
Delaunay) with built-in CAD and post-processing facilities. Its design
goal is to provide a simple meshing tool for academic problems with
parametric input and advanced visualization capabilities. It is built
around four modules: geometry, mesh, solver, and post-processing. The
specification of any input to these modules is done either interactively
using the graphical user interface (based on FLTK and OpenGL) or in ASCII
text files using Gmsh's own scripting language.

Changes: This release adds mesh export of post-processing views, new input
image formats, and much improved background mesh handling.

About: Higher Order Logic (HOL) is a programming environment in which
theorems can be proved and proof tools implemented. Built-in decision
procedures and theorem provers can automatically establish many simple
theorems. An Oracle mechanism gives access to external programs such as
SAT and BDD engines. HOL 4 is particularly suitable as a platform for
implementing combinations of deduction, execution, and property checking.

Changes: This release adds theories of co-inductive (possibly infinite)
labelled transition paths in pathTheory, and of sorting and list
permutations in sortingTheory. It adds a new first-order proof tactic
(called METIS_TAC) that uses an ordered resolution and paramodulation, and
a 'boolification' tool that automatically defines functions that map data
types to boolean vectors. Many extensions, bugfixes, and backwards

Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Imagero Reader is a Java library for reading image files. Supported
file types include BMP, GIF, TIFF, PNG, JNG, MNG, JPEG (including 12-bit
grey), PSD, PBM, PGM, PPM, TGA, EPS, EPSI, and EPSF. The following RAW
file types are also supported, at least partially: MRW, CRW, NEF, DCR, and
DNG. It can read thumbnails, read metadata (IPTC, EXIF, and XMP), edit
metadata, get image width and height, get the number of images contained
in a file, define an area to read, add a ProgressListener, choose an image
channel to read, set a scale factor, set subsampling (JPEG only), and read
an image (or channel) directly into an array.

Changes: Metadata handling has been simplified. MetadataUtils contains
methods to read and edit metadata, read an image as BufferedImage, image
scaling, read ICC profiles, read and extract thumbnails, read image
pyramids, and other tasks. For editing EXIF and IPTC metadata,
MetadataEditor was introduced. JPEG reading speed has been improved,
especially if subsampling is used. A bug in ImageProducerAdapter has been

[042] - libRUIN 0.1.1
  by Julian Graham (http://freshmeat.net/users/joolean/)
  Sun, Jan 29th 2006 20:13

Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: libRUIN (Renderer for User Interfaces in Ncurses) is a rendering
library for various XML-based user interface markup languages (such as
Mozilla XUL), using the Ncurses terminal control library as a rendering
target. GNU Guile and the SDOM Scheme module are used as the "glue" that
manages user input and event handling. An application programmer passes an
XML document (including, potentially, a set of CSS stylesheets) and an
Ncurses WINDOW structure, and libRUIN paints the WINDOW according to the
markup and CSS. The programmer may subsequently pass Ncurses-style input
strings to that WINDOW via libRUIN, and libRUIN will handle the resulting
event flows.

Changes: While most of the core API is in place, the rendering behavior is
by no means stable enough for use in a production environment. Many areas
of the code have been completely rewritten for standards-compliance
reasons; as a result, some features that were working in earlier CVS
versions have fallen by the wayside.

Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 18, which contains 7,146 foods and
136 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals, fats,
calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the essential
polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are expressed
as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of food labeling
in the United States, but also can be fully customized. Foods can be added
from recipes or food labels, and nutrient intake can be graphed. The
program is completely menu-driven and there are no commands to learn.

Changes: This release fixes a bug in which customized fat percentages were
not properly set at the calorie default of 2000, although it worked at
other calorie settings. Changes were made to the essential fatty acid
reference values which, for instance, call for more Omega-3 as Omega-6
levels rise.

  Sun, Jan 29th 2006 11:51

About: RDFParser is a PHP class that loads and parses RDF/RSS files.
These are XML files that are used by many Websites to syndicate
headlines. The class provides an interface to the loaded file and makes
it simple to generate lists/ tables of the source site's headlines.

Changes: The old PHP3 code has been completely replaced with new a new
PHP4/5 compliant parser. The new code uses PHP's built-in SAX parser
(rather than regular expressions), which means it is much faster than the
old code; even a large RSS file like freshmeat's is parsed in under two
hundredths of a second (2800XP/PHP 4.4.0/ Apache 2.0.55). The new code is
also more flexible with regard to parsing slightly non-standard RSS/RDF

About: Thrust is a rewrite of the classic Commodore 64 game of the same
name, ported to Un*x and MSDOS. The object of the game is to lift the
Klystron Pod from the bottom of a cave and return it safely to space. The
Pod is very heavy (compared to the ship), and this makes it tougher than
it may seem. You must be careful not to run out of fuel, crash into the
cave walls, nor let the enemy artillary outposts shoot you down.

Changes: GGI support was added, which finally takes Thrust out of the

making it even closer to the original. Keyboard configuration changes are

etc.). Displaying of big timeleft values has been fixed. The default
config file is now called 'config.inc.php.new'.

[091] - Web100 2.5.7 (Stable)
  by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System Kernels

About: The Web100 project was created to produce a complete host-software
environment that will run common TCP applications at 100% of the available
bandwidth, regardless of the magnitude of a network's capability. Web100
has endowed TCP with better instrumentation. This instrumentation is the
foundation for both the TCP autotuning performed in process-level code and
the process- level tools designed to locate bottlenecks within the
following major subsystems: the sending application, the sending OS, the
Internet path, the receiving OS, and the receiving application.
Measurement tools have also been built on this instrumentation to display
performance indicators to end-users, as well as provide internal
diagnostics for network and system administrators.

Changes: The kernel was updated to Linux 2.6.15.

System :: Software Distribution
System :: Software Distribution Tools
System :: Systems Administration

About: WPKG is a Samba add-on that will help distribute software,
hotfixes, and patches to many clients. You can easily deploy software,
packages, updates, and changes without the need to manually go from one
workstation to another. You simply configure the software that should be
installed on a given machine or a group of machines, and next time these
workstations are booted, the software you specified is installed
automatically.

Changes: A bug causing the addition of multiple entries to the database
was fixed.

[093] - xlit 1.9
  by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
  Sun, Jan 29th 2006 17:05

Text Processing
Text Processing :: Linguistic
Text Processing :: Markup

About: Xlit is a program for converting text from one writing system into
another. It allows the user to define a transliteration simply by typing
the input strings in one window and the strings to which they are to be
mapped in another. Transliteration may be restricted to regions bounded by
specified delimiters or their complements. Xlit can also convert one type
of delimiter to another, e.g. from HZ escapes to XML.

Changes: An initialization file command has been added that allows the
user to define keyboard shortcuts. Attempts to transliterate when no
transliteration has been defined or when there is no text to transliterate
are now trapped. The Help menu has been reorganized, and the menu buttons
for the various popups made into toggles. Bugs in the Save Configuration
command were fixed. Several cosmetic improvements have been made.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Xorio is a Web application framework for Java with an integrated
content management system (CMS). The aim of Xorio is to be a solution that
is easy to use in the beginning but still offers the ambitious user the
possibility to extend and change everything, combined with a gently
inclined learning curve. The core part is a generic implementation of the
model layer (as in MVC) called Structured Content.

Changes: Not very much is working yet and there are probably a lot of
bugs, but you can run a simple Web site on it already.
