by AboutEdit (http://freshmeat.net/users/aboutedit/)
Fri, Feb 10th 2006 11:29
Text Editors
About: About:Edit is a client/server application that allows you to use
your browser to edit your text and source code files directly on the
server, enjoying most if not all of the conveniences of the traditional
desktop text editors, including syntax highlighting, multiple document
editing, and much more.
Changes: This release is a complete behind-the-surface rewrite that boosts
performance throughout application layers, and is particularly noticeable
when working with large files. In addition, this version adds complete
multilingual support, SFTP (FTP over SSH) support for accessing files, the
ability to select text with the mouse, highlighting of multi-line strings
and variables in strings, custom colouring of HTML tags and attributes,
and more.

[004] - APSR 0.17-13
by Martin Kluge (http://freshmeat.net/users/sventek/)
Fri, Feb 10th 2006 08:44
System :: Networking
About: APSR is a network testing tool designed to send and receive
arbitrary network packets. Its main purposes are firewall, security,
routing, and a lot of other tests. It can also be used to analyze your
network. The project is split into three main programs: apsend to create
and send packets, aprecv to dump the network traffic, and the apsrlib
which provides the appropriate low-level functions. A very wide range of
protocols are supported by the aprecv program. The application layer is
implemented through modules using a simple API. Modules can be written in
Perl, Ruby, C, or PCL (a special-purpose packet construction language).
Changes: A lot of compilation problems have been fixed and the code has
been cleaned. Some (Free)BSD-specific bugs have been fixed. No new
features have been added. Users are advised to upgrade to this release.

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Mailing List Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: bMail is mailing list/newsletter software. Unique features such as
the ability to email subsets (or "groups") of subscribers instead of the
whole list set it apart from alternatives.
Changes: New icons were introduced. The iCandy Junior set was removed due
to licensing issues. A Web-based installer was added. The new install
procedure requires you to make small modifications to setup/config.php.
See setup/config.sample.php for an example. Web based configuration was
implemented. A robust upgrade script was added. Core changes were made to
the architecture, and a new database API is used. The database structure
was updated. Many code cleanups were done. The Xinha WYSIWYG editor was
fixed. A potential SQL injection attack in sendmail.php was addressed. The
administrator password is now encrypted.

Fri, Feb 10th 2006 17:35
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
About: CoaSim is a tool for simulating the coalescent process with
recombination and gene conversion under the assumption of exponential
population growth. It efficiently constructs the ancestral recombination
graph for a given number of individuals and uses this to simulate samples
of SNP and micro satellite haplotypes/genotypes. The generated sample can
afterwards be separated in cases and controls, depending on the states of
selected individual markers. The tool can accordingly also be used to
construct cases and control data sets for association studies.

[013] - Dada Mail 2.10.6
by justin simoni (http://freshmeat.net/users/skazat/)
Fri, Feb 10th 2006 00:44
Communications :: Email :: Mailing List Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: Dada Mail is an intuitive, Web-based email list management system,
which runs on any hosting account that can execute custom CGI scripts.
Dada Mail is also a conceptual art project. Dada Mail handles double
opt-in/opt-out subscriptions, and can send complex announce-only and/or
discussion mailing list messages. It also provides archiving, viewing,
searching, resending, and syndicating (through RSS or Atom) sent messages.
Dada Mail produces valid XHTML and sticks to best practices when creating
email messages.
Changes: This version of Dada Mail includes many new features, including a
screen caching scheme, to allow often-used and resource-intensive HTML
screens to be cached to be shown again, instead of relying on redundant
processing of the same information. This version also includes
optimizations to Dada Mail's SQL backend, including a unified SQL handle
where one SQL connection is used at a time, instead of many. This release
is suggested for anybody using Dada Mail on a busy Web site or a Web site
with limited resources.

[017] - Easy Benchmarking Suite 1.03
by Karel Kubat (http://freshmeat.net/users/karelk/)
Fri, Feb 10th 2006 02:30
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
System :: Benchmark
About: The Easy Benchmarking Suite consists of Perl scripts to collect,
analyze, and plot Web site benchmarks. It supports arbitrary concurrent
clients to simulate Web traffic, with each client firing a number of
requests. The suite is "easy" because it can handle all types of requests
(e.g., with session cookies, authentication cookies) and because the
scripts can easily be tweaked to suit particular requirements.
Changes: This release involves a major functionality extension: data
collection and plotting capabilities were extended so that performance
histograms can be plotted. Furthermore, client startups are now
synchronized more effectively.

[021] - GNU CD Input and Control Library 0.0.1 (Perl-Device-Cdio)
by R. Bernstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/rocky/)
Fri, Feb 10th 2006 11:48
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio
Multimedia :: Video
Software Development :: Libraries
About: The GNU Compact Disc Input and Control library encapsulates CD-ROM
reading and control for applications wishing to be oblivious to the OS-
and device-dependent properties of a CD-ROM. It provides an API for access
to SCSI-MMC (multimedia commands) and support for CD image types like
BIN/CUE, cdrdao's TOC, and Nero's NRG, which gives applications using the
library the ability to read disc images as though they were CDs. ISO-9660
filesystem support is included, as are utility programs for displaying CD
and CD-ROM drive information, reading the blocks of a CD, and extracting
files from an ISO-9660 filesytem image. cdparanoia is also included.
Changes: In this initial object-oriented Perl interface to libcdio, audio
CD controls, device controls, disc classification, various block CD read
routines, and some track routines are provided. There are several example
programs in the package demonstrating use.

About: Ivman is a flexible userspace volume manager for Linux. Originally
an automounter, it can also be used to run arbitrary commands when certain
devices are added to or removed from the system, when properties on
existing devices change, or when devices emit conditions. Unlike
gnome-volume-manager, it runs from a console. It uses D-BUS and HAL to
listen for new devices, and uses pmount for mounting.
Changes: This release respects HAL storage.automount_enabled_hint
property. It respects HAL device locks. A small 'ivman-launch' script is
included to manage a per-session instance of Ivman.

selected in the Nautilus interface. Each time you right-click on one or
several selected files in Nautilus, Nautilus Actions will parse its
configuration files to see if a program has been set for this selection.
If one has been set, it will add an item to the menu that allows you to
execute the program on the selected files.
Changes: The layout of Nact has been changed to provide a usable interface
on small resolution screens. Nact allows a configuration to be duplicated
to ease the creation of several similar actions. Some grammar and spelling
errors have been fixed. The default "Manage Actions" action has been
removed from the popup menu. Nact is now only accessible from the desktop
preferences menu. The configurations list is sorted alphabetically in
Nact's dialogs. More than twenty language translation have been added or
updated. Lots of other minor bugfixes were made.

[046] - SPMS/syspatch 0.6
by LEM (http://freshmeat.net/users/olem/)
Fri, Feb 10th 2006 15:13
System :: Software Distribution
System :: Systems Administration
About: SPMS and syspatch are a useful tools to apply OpenBSD patches to a
collection of OpenBSD hosts where you don't want to have a compiler and
the src hierarchy, nor spend the time needed to compile some sources. SPMS
and syspatch are designed for admins who have more than one OpenBSD box to
administer, who work in teams, and don't want to spend time on repetitive
tasks. In case of trouble, you can revert on an applied patch. It will not
mask the process of OpenBSD patching, since you still have to build errata
on a buildhost and understand what is patched.
Changes: This release uses SPMS::* Perl modules to clean up the source and
make syspatch easier to maintain and develop by more than one person. It
has POD documentation for SPMS modules, better /var/db/spms/index.db
initialization, and better control over untar operations.

[047] - SWAMP 1.4.1
by digitaltom (http://freshmeat.net/users/digitaltom/)
Fri, Feb 10th 2006 08:40
Information Management :: Workflow Frameworks
About: SWAMP is a workflow processing platform in which the workflow is
designed in an XML based language in one file which is read by the SWAMP
server. It avoids hardcoding business logic, and workflows can be built
from different workflow "patterns" like simple actions, decisions,
selections, loops, and custom code. The SWAMP server automatically creates
a Web GUI from the workflow definition file that guides users through the
business logic process based on their roles. Notification is sent if
required. Overview pages over all running workflows and much more are
available.
Changes: This release removes the ImageMagick dependency and the generated
files from project tarball, adds HTML documentation to the RPM distribution
(building as noarch), and fixes bugs in webSWAMP. Workflows can now provide
a script snippet to set their color in the workflow list (useful for
highlighting priorities).

Fri, Feb 10th 2006 13:07
About: Web Performance Analyzer is a Web performance tool that allows
designers to measure, analyze, estimate, and track Web page performance.
It is available as a standalone program and an Eclipse plugin. WPA
captures Web pages as you browse and reveals dynamic HTTP requests,
forwards, and other low-level details that aren't visible from a browser.
But unlike other simple protocol sniffers, WPA can tell you if your Web
pages are getting faster or slower by replaying recorded sessions and
comparing the current performance to previous measurements.
