Multimedia :: Video
System :: Installation/Setup
Utilities

About: A.M.I.C.U.S. (Automatic Multimedia Installation Configuration
Utility System) helps users quickly and easily install and configure
MythTV on generic PC hardware. It uses the Debian Netinst CD to install
GNU/Linux and just the required packages to allow a functional MythTV on
low end hardware.

Changes: This release supports the Hauppauge PVR-x50 and BT8x8 tuners and
includes a bootable CD ISO image with a Debian Testing installation and
all the .debs needed for MythTV.

  by z-man (http://freshmeat.net/users/zmanuel/)
  Sat, Mar 4th 2006 06:59

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: In Armagetron, you ride a lightcycle around the game grid. You can
only make sharp turns of 90 degrees and a wall constantly builds up after
you. Make your enemies crash into your wall, but be aware that they are
trying to do the same to you. If you are fast enough, you may be able to
trap them, but the only way to speed up your lightcycle is to drive close
to the dangerous walls. Prepare for exciting strategic preparations
followed by action-packed close combat!

Changes: A compiler bug in some versions of GCC has been worked around,
and strict adherence to resource naming standards is now enforced. Apart
from that, this release adds only minor bugfixes (camera stuck in free
mode), tweaks (wall texture), and configurability (menu key and smart
camera).

[003] - Ascii2Binary 2.9
  by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
  Sat, Mar 4th 2006 07:32

Utilities

About: The Ascii2Binary project consists of two complementary programs
that convert between textual and binary representations of numbers.
Ascii2Binary reads input consisting of textual representations of numbers
separated by whitespace and produces as output the binary equivalents. It
is useful for generating test data and linking programs that generate
textual output to programs that require binary input. Binary2Ascii
converts binary numbers to text. In both programs, the type and
size/precision of the input or output is selected using command line
flags.

Changes: Binary2ascii now optionally delimits the output as per the
locale. A precision of 0, previously treated as an error, is now
permitted.

[004] - bit 0.1.26
  by Rick Vinyard (http://freshmeat.net/users/rvinyard/)
  Sat, Mar 4th 2006 06:00

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Widget Sets

About: bit is a library that makes it easier to dynamically manipulate
data buffers containing fields that do not have octet (byte) boundaries.
An example is the IP header, which is generally dealt with at compile time
via bit fields in a structure. A key feature of the bit library is support
for loading data formats described in XML files and dynamically parsing
those fields at run time. This library was initially created to support
reading various kinds of robotic device I/O (IR sensors, motors), but it
has also been used for run time parsing of IP, TCP, UDP, and RTP headers.

Changes: This release updates the buffer to reflect changes in the conexus
library and cleans the automake/autoconf files.

[005] - BitEvolution 1.1.1
  by Scott Gillette (http://freshmeat.net/users/scottagillette/)
  Sat, Mar 4th 2006 07:27

Software Development :: Libraries

About: BitEvolution is an easy-to-use client/server application that you
can use to keep your distributed application up to date. Modeled after the
Apache ANT project, it is a task-based application intended to eliminate
the work required to write, test, and debug a home-grown update
application. Your distributed application does not have to be written in
Java to take advantage of BitEvolution.

Changes: This release adds an introduction to writing custom update tasks.
This tutorial takes you through implementing and deploying a simple update
task from start to finish. The release also fixes a null pointer exception
in the Client and Server classes which occurred when specifying an
unqualified configuration file on the commandline.

[007] - C++ Regex Engine 1.05.02
  by unr_stuart (http://freshmeat.net/users/unr_stuart/)
  Sat, Mar 4th 2006 05:47

Text Processing

About: C++ Regex Engine provides a robust regular expression library for
use in C++. The syntax of the regular expression language is very close to
the Perl 5 standard. The classes given somewhat mirror those found in
Java's regular expression library, but have several improvements. The
intended audience of this package is anyone who does a lot of data parsing
(e.g. sysadmins), people tired of trying to decipher Perl scripts, and
regular expression beginners who know C++. Some knowledge of the STL's
vector and string will come in handy, but isn't necessary.

Changes: This release fixes a bug in the split function that caused
certain splits to not do anything.

[014] - DNS Flood Detector 1.12
  by Dennis Opacki (http://freshmeat.net/users/dopacki/)
  Sat, Mar 4th 2006 21:11

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
System :: Networking

About: DNS Flood Detector was developed to detect abusive usage levels on
high traffic nameservers and to enable quick response in halting (among
other things) the use of one's nameserver to facilitate spam. DNS Flood
Detector uses libpcap (in non-promiscuous mode) to monitor incoming dns
queries to a nameserver. The tool may be run in one of two modes, either
daemon mode or "bindsnap" mode. In daemon mode, the tool will alarm via
syslog. In bindsnap mode, the user is able to get near-real-time stats on
usage to aid in more detailed troubleshooting.

Changes: Address filtering options are now available, as are fractional
query rates for better precision. This update also fixes several crashes
and segfaults that affected overall reliability.

  Sat, Mar 4th 2006 05:59

Database
Database :: Front-Ends

About: GsqlR2 is a GTK+ 2 interface to Oracle that aids in Oracle
application development and testing. Its features include a schema
browser, multiple SQL work areas, SQL syntax highlighting, bind variable
entry widgets in the command window, and SQL*Plus-style command scripting.
For SQL statement analysis and tuning there is a tree-style SQL statement
"explain plan" facility and the ability to load SQL statements from the
runtime cursor cache (V$SQL table), Oracle Statspack repository, the
Oracle Automatic Workload Repository in Oracle version 10g, and full AWR
reports.

Changes: The major enhancement in this release is the fully non-blocking
interface. While long-running user-submitted queries are running, the
interface is now fully usable. (It was set mostly non-sensitive before.)
Result spooling to text files is much better than before; semantics are
outlined in the changelog. The DBMS_SPACE tab for tables and indexes now
has an option for performing only the UNUSED_SPACE procedure and not
SPACE_USAGE, as it can an extremely resource intensive operation.

  Sat, Mar 4th 2006 05:49

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: Heirloom mailx (formerly known as "nail") is derived from Berkeley
Mail and provides the functionality of the System V and POSIX mailx
commands. Additional features include support for MIME, IMAP (including
caching and disconnected use), POP3, SMTP, S/MIME, international character
sets, maildir folders, message threading, powerful search methods, scoring,
and a Bayesian junk mail filter. Mailx can be used as a mail batch language
in nearly the same way as it is used interactively. It can thus act as a
mailbox filter, can fetch mail from remote accounts, and can send files as
attachments.

Changes: The program has been integrated into the Heirloom project as
"mailx". An error in SMTP address syntax that caused mailx to fail sending
messages to a Sendmail X server has been fixed. The SMTP AUTH password can
now be typed directly at the terminal. A SMTP transfer child process can
now be aborted in a controlled manner with SIGTERM, saving the current
message to the dead.letter file.

About: psyced is a distributed chat and messaging system based on the
Protocol for SYnchronous Conferencing. PSYC is multicast and routed
between servers and clients in a scalable and efficient way, but users can
also comfortably use IRC clients, telnet, Web chat, or Jabber to enter the

that are freely programmable and cannot be hacked. It also provides
gateways to several IRC networks, but unlike IRC, everyone can run a
server and be an equal member of the PSYC network.

Changes: This release comes with a new centralized configuration scheme

[056] - socklog 2.0.3 (Stable)
  by Gerrit Pape (http://freshmeat.net/users/pape/)
  Sat, Mar 4th 2006 06:58

System :: Logging

About: socklog cooperates with the runit package to create a small and
secure replacement for syslogd. socklog supports system logging through
Unix domain sockets (/dev/log) and UDP sockets (0.0.0.0:514) with the help
of runit's runsvdir, runsv, and svlogd. socklog provides a different
network logging concept, and also does log event notification. svlogd has
built in log file rotation based on file size, so there is no need for any
cron jobs to rotate the logs. socklog is small, secure, and reliable.

[059] - TCPDuP 0.50b
  by Benjamin Rossi (http://freshmeat.net/users/benrossi/)
  Sat, Mar 4th 2006 21:24

Internet
Internet :: Proxy Servers
System :: Networking

About: TCPDuP is a command-line networking utility that can proxy TCP
service to a remote host:port pair, thus duplicating the availability of
that service. It differs from using netcat and a named pipe in that it
supports multiple concurrent connections. It is also faster than using a
pipe and netcat due to less overhead and use of asynchronous I/O. Other
features include local command execution, a daemon mode, and verbose
output/logging.

Changes: A modular framework by which new functionality can be easily
developed is now used. Two modules are built in: pair and cmd, which
duplicate a remote service and capture the I/O of a locally executed
command respectively. It is now possible to limit bandwidth to a specified
amount in bits per second, regardless of the module used.

[060] - TCPfork 2.55
  by Thomas Obermair (http://freshmeat.net/users/thomasobermair/)
  Sat, Mar 4th 2006 21:04

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: TCPfork is a userland TCP proxy with advanced load balancing
capabilities. Its core features are the ability to load balance on a
"least connection" basis and the ability to take the machine load into
account ("least load" or "least resource" load balancing). This is
implemented by using the bngagent UDP protocol. It performs "TCP open"
health checks by default and allows the use of external health check
scripts. TCPfork 2.x introduces a highly optimized multithreading
connection scheduler, allowing fast processing of high numbers of
concurrent connections.

Changes: The BngAgentService contribution for Windows was included in the
distribution. The license revocations were updated. Solaris 8 support was
discontinued. The manuals were updated to 2.55.0.

[061] - tntnet 1.5.0
  by Tommi Mäkitalo (http://freshmeat.net/users/tmaek/)
  Sat, Mar 4th 2006 21:26

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: Tntnet is a Web application server for generating Web applications
in C++. HTML pages with some additional tags for inclusion of C++ code are
compiled into shared libraries and served from tntnet. It resembles PHP,
JSP, or Mason, but the programming language used is C++, and the pages are
compiled into native code before serving. Tntnet is fully multithreaded and
supports http-keep-alive for best performance. Dynamic pages are served
about as fast as static pages in other Web servers, while creating Web
applications keeps simple.

Changes: This stable version has many improvements and unified naming
conventions (mixed case with class names starting upper-case, methods
lower-case). Some performance and stability improvements were made.

[062] - TunaPie 0.9.0 (Stable)
  by James Stone (http://freshmeat.net/users/lunadog/)
  Sat, Mar 4th 2006 21:16

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Video

About: TunaPie is a directory browser for Internet radio and TV streams.
At present, it uses the shoutcast server, but compatibility with other
services is planned. Tunapie allows you to search for streams and then
launch your audio player (XMMS) or NSV viewer (Mplayer) of choice. It also
allows recording of audio and video streams using streamripper.

Changes: A recording timer is now available, which makes it possible to
record streams at a specific time in the future, even if tunapie is not
running at the time. It uses the "at" queue. The search function now looks
within "Now Playing" as well as genres and station names.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering

About: VortexGE is a software 3D renderer for the X environment that was
created without using OpenGL/MesaGL. It also supports 2D image
manipulations and audio access and is intended for creating Linux games
without needing 3D card acceleration.

Changes: Dithering support was added for the 8 BPP display mode. All I/O
functions can now accept file names (via "const char*" or "const
std::string&") or an instance of istream/ostream-derived classes. Lua
5.1.0 is now used as the scripting engine backend, replacing Lua 5.0.2.
Some symbols were renamed and optimizations and bugfixes were made.
