[006] - Berkeley Unified Parallel C 2.2.2
by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Fri, Mar 10th 2006 13:29
Software Development :: Compilers
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: Unified Parallel C (UPC) is an extension of the C programming
language designed for high performance computing on large-scale parallel
machines. The language provides a uniform programming model for both
shared and distributed memory hardware. The programmer is presented with a
single shared, partitioned address space, where variables may be directly
read and written by any processor, but each variable is physically
associated with a single processor. UPC uses a Single Program Multiple
Data (SPMD) model of computation in which the amount of parallelism is
fixed at program startup time, typically with a single thread of execution
per processor. Berkeley Unified Parallel C provides a compiler for
developing UPC software.
Changes: This release adds auto platform detection. The translator has
been ported to Mac OS X/PPC32, Linux/PPC64, and AIX/PPC32. The runtime has
been ported to Mac OS X/x86, Mac OS X/PPC64, and Cray XD1. There are
Cygwin, RHEL4, and Cray XT3 port-specific fixes. pthreads-related bugs
have been fixed. Auto-retry and DNS failover have been added to upcc HTTP
translation. There are many other bugfixes, code clean-ups, and speed-ups.

[012] - dvd-slideshow 0.7.5
by Scott Dylewski (http://freshmeat.net/users/sdylewski/)
Fri, Mar 10th 2006 11:31
Multimedia :: Video
About: dvd-slideshow makes a DVD-compatible slideshow video with menus
from a batch of pictures. It consists of a set of scripts: dvd-slideshow
reads a text file list of all the pictures you want in one slideshow and
creates a DVD-compatible MPEG movie with your audio tracks and specified
timing. It supports effects such as fades, crops, and the Ken Burns
effect. dvd-menu makes a top-level DVD menu with the output files from
dvd-slideshow. dir2slideshow makes a dvd-slideshow input file from a
directory of pictures. gallery2slideshow makes the input file from your
Gallery album. jigl2slideshow makes the input file from your jigl album.
The output is fed through dvdauthor to create DVDs.
Changes: This release fixes a few major bugs with newer versions of
ImageMagick (6.2.2 and higher) that showed up primarily when using the
KenBurns effect. There are other bugfixes and improvements that should
make this more compatible with the wide variety of Linux systems out
there. Note that the title keyword has changed, so if you re-run your old
slideshows, "title" will have to be changed to "titlebar" for the same
behavior. The title keyword just displays the text in the middle of the
screen.

About: kds (krico's distributed storage) is a distributed storage system.
Its main goal is to work as a session handler for PHP. This package
provides four components: a daemon (kdsd), a command-line cilent (kdsc), a
library (libkds), and a PHP session handler extension. kdsd is a daemon
that uses worker threads to process KDSPROTO requests. It then retreives
or stores data in a BerkeleyDB storage. A nice little curses program is
also supplied to monitor the storage state.

Fri, Mar 10th 2006 12:21
System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: ps-watcher periodically a gets a list of process names via ps. A
configuration file specifies a list of Perl regular-expression patterns to
match the processes against. For each match, a Perl expression specified
for that pattern is evaluated. The evaluated expression can refer to
variables which are set by ps and pertain to the matched process(es),
including the amount memory consumed by the process, or the total elapsed
time. If the Perl expression for a matched pattern evaluates true, then an
action can be run such as killing the program, restarting it, or mailing an
alert.
Changes: Some minimal Cygwin support was added, and support for other

Fri, Mar 10th 2006 13:59
Desktop Environment :: Screen Savers
Games/Entertainment :: Simulation
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering
About: Simulum deals with different simulations of star movements and
their visualizations. At first it looks at the projection and
accumulation of star brightness. In actually doing this it distributes
stars among a three dimensional figure. To get a nice effect it combines
the photographic image production with a moving view point. So the
outcome is the visual impression of flying through a star field. Secondly
it studies different algorithms of particle movements and clustering. The
primary approach uses a combination of Newton's gravitational law, energy,
and impulse conservation. At all these stages an highly dynamic view of
the processes is able to be produced.
Changes: A huge refactoring phase took place. Now the code is much better
organized. A simple gravity engine is included, so you can watch gravity
at work. It has now a nice GUI. You can browse the simulation with your
mouse. The provided unsigned jar includes an applet that can directly be
used by HTML pages; this release includes sample HTML pages. You can also
webstart the signed jar or start it with "java -jar lib/mulumis.jar".

by Richard Curnow (http://freshmeat.net/users/rcurnow/)
Fri, Mar 10th 2006 15:40
System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Software Distribution Tools
System :: Systems Administration
About: spill manages symbolic links under one tree which point to
matching filenames in another. When individual projects are configured
with project/version-specific -- prefix= settings, to keep their
installations segregated, spill can make them appear to be installed in a
common place, e.g. under /usr/local. It can also delete the links
associated with a particular program. It is similar in concept to various
other programs such as stow, depot, and relink. However, it's written in
C, so it isn't reliant on an interpreter being available. It also doesn't
assume complete control of the directory tree where the symbolic links
are created. It can create both absolute or relative symbolic links, the
latter being more convenient in some setups.
Changes: This release adds a -D option to remove the links for a package
given just its name and the path to the links area.

acquire, you can buy new items and improve your armour and weapons. You
can also roam the world in search of evil monsters (and kill them).
Changes: This release speeds path finding by a factor of 20, added cloaks,

and Linux/x86, without requiring any additional software on the user's
computer. All an author needs to do to build a cross-platform
browser-based application or CDROM is to copy scripts to their proper
directories. HTML::Mason and mod_perl-like execution modes are supported
for Perl-driven Web sites.
Changes: This release adds CDBuiler, an advanced browser-based UI for
configuring all properties of a CD. It adds support for PHP 5 for all
platforms. It adds options for configuring browser window properties on
Windows (showing toolbar, statusbar, and so on). It adds a configuration
option not to eject the CD-ROM on server shutdown. It adds the ability to
run user programs before running the Web server (useful for showing
animated logos made as Flash projectors). Perl has been updated to version
5.8.5. Other useful changes have been made.

Security
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking
About: The WiKID Strong Authentication System is a highly scalable, secure
two-factor authentication system consisting of a server, a token client,
and network clients that connect a service such as a VPN or Web page to
the WiKID server to validate one-time passcodes. The user enters their PIN
into the token client, where it is encrypted and sent to the server. If the
PIN is correct, the encryption valid, and account active, the one-time
passcode is generated, encrypted, and returned to the user. It is simple
to implement and maintain, allows users to be validated automatically,
requires no hardware tokens, has a simple API for application support via
a COM object and Java component, supports multiple domains, and supports
replication for fault tolerance and scalability.
Changes: This release cleans the code and should be easier to install. It
removes hard-coded paths.
