[001] - A Sudoku Solver in C 1.0
  by Bill DuPree (http://freshmeat.net/users/wdupre1/)
  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 02:53

About: A Sudoku Solver in C is a console-based program that solves Su Doku
puzzles (a.k.a. Sudoku or Number Place) using deductive logic. It will only
resort to trial-and-error and backtracking approaches upon exhausting its
deductive moves. On an Athlon XP 3000 it solves about 6,600 medium puzzles
per second.

[004] - Asymptote 1.02
  by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)
  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 13:54

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: Lighting was implemented for surfaces described by functions and
matrices. A bug in the positioning of axis labels was fixed. The type of
randMax was fixed. Configuration and diagnostics were improved; the "dir"
setting in configuration files is respected. Under MSDOS, the
configuration file is now %USERPROFILE%/.asy/config.asy; configuration
settings now work as documented. On Unix systems, installation can
optionally be performed without root privileges. The patches to pstoedit
were removed, since they are now included in pstoedit 3.44.

[005] - Backup Manager 0.7.2 (Development)
  by Alexis SUKRIEH (http://freshmeat.net/users/sukria/)
  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 06:14

About: Backup Manager is a tool for generating archives easily. It is
designed for those who don't want an obfuscated tool for backing up their
system. It can make tar, tar.gz, tar.bz2, and zip archives, can perform
incremental backups, and can upload archives to remote hosts with FTP,
SSH, or RSYNC. It can be run in a parallel mode with different
configuration files. The configuration file is simple to understand. The
backup process can also be customized thanks to hook scripts.

Changes: This release provides a new burning system that can be run
interactively in order to burn the whole repository into several optical
media (CDR/DVD). The process burns data until the medium is full and then
ask the user to put a new medium for following up. It's also now possible
to burn all the archives of a specific day with the command line. The dar
support has been enhanced with better support of incremental backups and
bugfixes. More than 16 known bugs have been closed since the last release.

About: ByteName is a tool that for each byte of the input prints a line
consisting of the byte offset, the hex value of the byte, the octal value
of the byte, and its description in a selected single-byte encoding. A
command line flag suppresses printing of lines corresponding to ASCII
characters, which is useful for locating stray non-ASCII codes.

  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 23:21

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: check_logfiles is a plugin for Nagios which checks logfiles for
defined patterns. It is capable of detecting logfile rotation. If you tell
it how the rotated archives look, it will also examine these files. Unlike
check_logfiles, traditional logfile plugins were not aware of the gap
which could occur, so under some circumstances they ignored what had
happened between their checks. A configuration file is used to specify
where to search, what to search, and what to do if a matching line is
found.

  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 03:07

Games/Entertainment :: Multi-User Dungeons (MUD)
Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: Crossfire is a multi-player graphical arcade and adventure game
made for X. It has certain flavours from other games, especially Gauntlet
and the rogue-like games (Nethack, Moria, Angband, and Ragnarok). Any
number of players can move around in their own window, finding and using
items and battling monsters. They can choose to cooperate or compete in
the same world.

Changes: This release contains numerous minor changes, stability
enhancements, and bugfixes. Some of the major changes include shop
specialization and new transports. Shops no longer all give the same
prices, instead varying prices based on what they normally deal with. Also
added were ships that can be controlled by the player as a new mode of
exploration and transportation.

[016] - DataparkSearch 4.38
  by Maxim Zakharov (http://freshmeat.net/users/maxime/)
  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 16:08

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Text Processing :: Indexing

About: DataparkSearch is a Web search engine tool. It features support for
http, https, ftp, nntp, and news URLs, htdb virtual URL support for
indexing SQL databases, text/html, text/xml, text/plain, audio/mpeg (MP3),
and image/gif mime types built-in support, external parsers support for
other document types, the ability to index multilangual sites using
content negotiation, searching of all of the word forms using ispell
affixes and dictionaries, stopwords and synonyms lists, boolean query
language support, results sorting by relevancy, popularity rank, last
modified time, and importance (a multiplication of the relevancy and
popularity ranks), support for various character sets, and phrases
segmenting for the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Thai languages. It has
accent-insensitive search, mod_dpsearch for Apache, and support for
internationalized domain names.

Changes: The name of the search template can now be passed via the
path_info part of the URL. For ispell-based fuzzy search, if no exact
match is found in the dictionary, an entry with the longest match suffix
is taken to produce word forms. The indexer accepts a DP.PopRank META tag
to assign the initial value for a page's PopularityRank. An indexer trap
on Debian Linux has been fixed. robots.txt processing has been fixed for
records with two or more User-Agent fields. The default value of the
--with-wrdunifactor configure parameter has been changed to 1.5.

  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 23:01

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for rapidly developing search
engines on any relational database. It's scalable, fast to develop, and
fast to search. It runs on any JDBC-supported relational database. It can
work on any new systems or old legacy systems that need full-text search,
without changing existing systems. It's based on the high-performance
Lucene API. It has a Web UI for configuring data retrieval, content
indexing, and displaying templates. It can also serve as a Lucene learning
tool or RAD tool. The search results are rendered by Velocity as HTML, XML
Web service, CSV, or anything you want.

Changes: This release adds noResults.vm to templates to display search
instructions to end users. It will only search indexes with non-negative
displayOrder in multi search. It shuts down indexing when there is a JDBC
driver mismatch. It corrects error messages when a wildcard search matches
too many records. It fixes a CJKAnalyzer highlighting problem when
searching on ID.

About: Extended Virtual Synchrony for Java is a pure Java implementation
of the totem single-ring protocol, which provides process group membership
and reliable multicast with totally ordered messages. Because of its
token-based design, this protocol is unique in achieving effective flow
control, and is ideal for implementing replication in small clusters.

Changes: The previous release incorrectly handled the case of 2 network
adapters. It now forces the user to specify one. A bug in the code that
collected free nodes in the message buffer and put them back in the free
list has been fixed. A bug in updating the last safe message id has been

About: FUPlayer is a full featured music manager and player for the GNOME
desktop. With it, you can play music from your hard drive, create
playlists, do real file management using its Trash, and play, rip, and
burn audio CDs. It features an interface similar to those of many modern
manager-style players, but with many improvements, such as true non-modal
search and browse functionality, find-as-you-type, and drag destination
highlighting. It aims to be extremely user friendly and efficient to use.

Changes: The scrolling track-playing label has been backported from the
0.3.0 development work. It doesn't quite fit aesthetically in a few ways.

[033] - idioskopos 0.1.11
  by Rick Vinyard (http://freshmeat.net/users/rvinyard/)
  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 16:05

Software Development

About: idioskopos (Greek: idio- inward, within, private; -skopos look,
aim, target) is a C++ library that attempts to simplify the addition of
object reflection and introspection. The idioskopos library is based
heavily on the approach taken in Gtkmm to wrap the gobject interface.
However, it is a standalone library and depends only on the sigc++
library.

Changes: Significant changes in this release and a few code cleanups. The
concept of property iterators and support for the C++ subscript operator [
] were added to the introspectable hierarchy. Reference properties were
modified a bit, documentation was improved a bit, and there is a new
example 'iterating' that demonstrates how to use the new iterators to use
introspection and traverse a tree of introspectable objects.

[058] - Pinot 0.44
  by Fabrice Colin (http://freshmeat.net/users/colinf/)
  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 20:56

About: Pinot is a metasearch tool built around the GTKmm toolkit, the
Xapian information retrieval library, and the language guessing
functionality of libtextcat. It enables one to query search engines, and
display as well as analyze and locally index the returned results. It can
also be used as a lightweight desktop search tool (local documents and
mbox mail accounts can be imported and indexed). The type of documents is
currently limited to plain text, HTML, PDF, and MS Word.

Changes: Document labels no longer have colours. Selecting a label on an
index lists those documents that have the label. The dependency on OTS was
dropped; abstracts are now generated at search time based on query terms.
The curl library is now used by default for HTTP access, instead of Neon.
Several bugs were corrected. Following the introduction of autotools in
0.43, the PDF, RTF, and MS Word tokenizer libraries were not built
correctly. A potential deadlock was fixed in the UI. It would sometime
occur when listing the index and saving the preferences in quick
succession.

[061] - Program D 4.6
  by Noel Bush (http://freshmeat.net/users/noelbush/)
  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 22:54

Communications :: Chat
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: Program D is a widely used AIML bot platform. It is
feature-complete and well-tested. It supports unlimited multiple bots in a
single server instance, and has an open-ended architecture for interacting
via any interface imaginable. The standard release provides a J2EE Web
application implementation. Drop-in listeners are available for IRC, AIM,
and Yahoo!. It includes an automated testing framework for testing
knowledge bases, and is packaged with an AIML Test Suite that verifies
that the program itself complies to the AIML specification.

Changes: This is a highly-recommended release which introduces some
interesting performance improvements, fixes a number of important bugs,
and brings some major architectural improvements. Most notably, Program D
can now be deployed as a .war file to a Web application server, and can
interact with a Web client using "AJAX" technologies. This final release
follows three release candidates which ironed out a few minor issues.

[062] - Proxifier 0.7.6b
  by Brad Cable (http://freshmeat.net/users/Aeiri/)
  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 20:57

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: Proxifier is an easy to install three tier Web proxy. Its features
include the ability to remove cookies, the HTTP referer field, the HTTP
user-agent field, scripts on the page, and objects, altering the
user-agent string to whatever you please, and tunnelling your proxied
traffic through a second proxy.

Changes: Major reworking in the regular expressions. AJAX-based JS is
working to a small extent. Script detection wasn't working, but is now
fixed by using preg_split. on[event] attributes now execute Javascript
correctly. If you aren't using the new "Encode URLs" option, Javascript is
not required anymore (like 0.7.4.1 and previous). The old implementation of
the "Encode URLs" option required Javascript no matter what. Countless
other major and minor bugfixes.

[063] - prtunnel 0.2.7
  by Josh Beam (http://freshmeat.net/users/joshb/)
  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 13:49

Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: prtunnel tunnels a TCP connection through to a remote server using
an HTTP or SOCKS5 proxy. It is useful if you are behind a proxy and want
to use a program that doesn't have native proxy support.

Changes: A bug that would cause malloc(0) to be called in some situations
(which could cause problems on some systems) has been fixed. The server
timeout, if specified, is now set before the proxy server successfully
connects to the remote server, which will prevent the program from hanging
if the proxy does not respond to the client.

[064] - Ragel State Machine Compiler 5.4
  by Adrian Thurston (http://freshmeat.net/users/age/)
  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 16:04

Software Development :: Code Generators

About: Ragel compiles finite state machines from regular languages into C,
C++, Objective-C, or D code. It allows the programmer to embed actions at
any point in a regular language and to control non-determinism in the
resulting machines. It understands concatenation, union, kleene star,
subtraction, intersection, epsilon transitions, and various other common
operators. Through the use of labels and epsilon transitions, Ragel
supports the building of state machines using a named state and associated
transition list paradigm. Its finite state machines are closed under all of
its operators. This property allows for arbitrary regular languages to be
described. It can be used to create a parser for any language that is
regular.

Changes: Some simplifications were made to the transition list
representation in the frontend. Two guarded concatenation operators were
added. A strong subtraction operator was added.

[068] - Seek & Destroy Music Duplicates 1.6
  by igor tavcar (http://freshmeat.net/users/tigor/)
  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 05:51

About: Seek & Destroy Music Duplicates is a tool for locating and removing
duplicated music files. It does not crash on corrupted files and normally
suggests the best song from amongst the duplicates. It uses an incremental
scanning strategy and uses relatively few system resources. MP3, Ogg, WMA,
and AAC formats are supported. It allows specified directories to be
excluded from the search, and the state of the scanner can be saved to
engage incremental scanning when the tool is used periodically. ID3 tag
and data comparators are supported. An XML report can be produced.
Duplicates are always moved to the destination folder and not deleted.

Changes: Setting the roots when roots are already scanned was optimized:
the revalidation process is now triggered only on "lock" changes. In the
GUI, a human-readable alert is shown if the session format compatibility
exception is raised in the session deserialization process. Hot keys for
menu items "Save Session" and "Save Session As" have been added. On
application exit, the confirmation panel is shown if session state has
been changed. The slowness of removing the duplicates was fixed. The
problem with the console skipping "move" events was fixed.

message-IDs in the text and make them clickable in order to open a search
window. A dialog window that informs you when XPN downloads new articles
in watched threads was added. Some improvements were made in Global
Search, so it is possible to perform multiple searches. XPN now checks if
there are other instances running. This behavior should prevent database
break off. Some bugs in header management were fixed. A bug that caused
crashes with multipart articles with email attached was fixed.

[092] - xen-tools 1.2
  by Steve Kemp (http://freshmeat.net/users/skx/)
  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 06:21

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
System :: Software Distribution Tools
System :: Systems Administration

About: xen-tools is a collection of scripts that allow you to manipulate
virtual images for the Xen virtualization software. With the tools
installed, you may create new instances of Debian, complete with
networking, OpenSSH, and user accounts, with one simple command. Images
may also be easily updated, listed, or deleted.

Changes: This release includes several bugfixes relating to the generation
of the Xen configuration file for each generated Xen instance. The caching
of Debian binary packages also works as expected, significantly reducing
the amount of bandwidth used when creating multiple virtual instances. The
test suite was also updated to include more tests of the code to ensure
future correctness.

[094] - xterm patch #210
  by T.E.Dickey (http://freshmeat.net/users/tedickey/)
  Sun, Mar 12th 2006 20:55

Desktop Environment
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals

About: The xterm program is the standard terminal emulator for the X
Window System. It provides DEC VT102/VT220 and Tektronix 4014 compatible
terminals for programs that can't use the window system directly. If the
underlying operating system supports terminal resizing capabilities (for
example, the SIGWINCH signal in systems derived from 4.3bsd), xterm will
use the facilities to notify programs running in the window whenever it is
resized.

Changes: Provide for displaying UTF-8 title strings. Several other small
bugfixes.

[095] - Zoph 0.5.1
  by Jeroen Roos (http://freshmeat.net/users/jeroenr/)

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation

About: There are many photo-gallery programs available. Zoph is different,
as it concentrates on the management of large collection of photos instead
of just showing them on the Web. It can store a lot of information about
your photos, including the regular EXIF info, photographer, location,
title, description, rating, and the people in the photo. Photos can appear
in multiple albums and categories. Additional features include search,
slideshows, lightboxes, email, access privileges, and multiple languages.

Changes: Several bugs have been fixed in this release. Most notable are
some encoding issues that caused trouble when you used quotation marks in
text fields, the sort order of places, and a bug on the search page that
caused it to malfunction when using a translated version of Zoph. The mail
classes have been updated to the most recent version.
