[002] - A Sudoku Solver in C 1.10
  by Bill DuPree (http://freshmeat.net/users/wdupre1/)
  Tue, Mar 21st 2006 11:19

About: A Sudoku Solver in C is a console-based program that solves Su Doku
puzzles (a.k.a. Sudoku or Number Place) using deductive logic. It will only
resort to trial-and-error and backtracking approaches upon exhausting its
deductive moves. On an Athlon XP 3000 it solves about 6,600 medium puzzles
per second.

Changes: This release implements a few code cleanups, more speed
optimizations, and the addition of an "explain" option that lists in
detail the steps taken to produce the solution(s) to the puzzle.

[014] - Easy Benchmarking Suite 1.05
  by Karel Kubat (http://freshmeat.net/users/karelk/)
  Tue, Mar 21st 2006 03:06

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
System :: Benchmark

About: The Easy Benchmarking Suite consists of Perl scripts to collect,
analyze, and plot Web site benchmarks. It supports arbitrary concurrent
clients to simulate Web traffic, with each client firing a number of
requests. The suite is "easy" because it can handle all types of requests
(e.g., with session cookies, authentication cookies) and because the
scripts can easily be tweaked to suit particular requirements.

Changes: This release introduced a flag -t SEC in the sitebench script.
When present, benchmarking clients will wait a while before issuing the
next request (the wait time is SEC minus the round trip time of the
previous request, so that requests are SEC seconds apart). This emulates
user behavior more closely.

[018] - ext2hide 0.99.9
  by Jason M (http://freshmeat.net/users/infi_/)
  Tue, Mar 21st 2006 08:24

Security
System :: Filesystems

About: ext2hide allows the user to save and restore an arbitrary number of
files to and from the reserved space in an ext2/3 filesystem's primary and
backup superblocks. Using ext2hide, you can use this reserved section to
store an arbitrary number of files, where they will be completely
invisible to normal filesystem utilities, but still residing in permanent
storage on disk. This can be useful for passwords, public keys, anything
you like.

Changes: This release fixes a bug in 0.99.8 in which offset calculation
was incorrectly performed for reserve superblocks at a byte offset greater
than maxuint32 (4294967296). All users of 0.99.8 are urged to upgrade to
this version immediately.

[019] - FOX 1.6.0 (Stable)
  by jeroen (http://freshmeat.net/users/jvz/)
  Tue, Mar 21st 2006 08:46

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Widget Sets

About: FOX is a C++-based toolkit for GUI development. It includes a rich
set of widgets and has powerful yet simple layout managers, MDI widgets,
and mega-widgets. FOX incorporates support for XDND for drag and drop, X
clipboard and X Selection, watching other I/O channels and sockets, timers
and idle processing, object serialization and deserialization, a registry
to save persistent settings, and 3D widgets using Mesa or OpenGL. FOX
works on Linux, IRIX, Solaris, HP/UX, AIX, Tru64 Unix, Windows 9x,NT,2K
(VC++, GNUWIN32, Borland, VisualAge C++), FreeBSD, and Sequent.

Changes: The FXExpression class was added to evaluate numerical
expressions. It's fast because it compiles to easy-to-interpret byte-code.
It also allows expressions with variable arguments which can be named
arbitrarily. The wakeat() API was added to FXThread. The wakeat() API
sleeps till the given absolute time is reached. The time is expressed as a
64-bit long counting nanoseconds since Jan. 1, 1970.

[020] - Freecycle 0.6alpha

  Tue, Mar 21st 2006 02:27

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Editors
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: MIDI

About: Freecycle is a beat slicer providing amplitude domain and frequency
domain beat matching and zero crossing algorithms. It exports sliced audio
chunks and generates a MIDI file which can be used to play the sliced
loop. Alternatively, you can jam with it as soon as you've made slices
using a MIDI keyboard or sequencer. Freecycle also exports AKAI
S5000/S6000/Z4/Z8 .AKP files to be used with your favorite sampler,
SoundFont files, and supports slice drag and drop from the application to
the desktop. It can process the audio inline using LADSPA effects, as well
as applying envelopes to seperate slices.

Changes: This release replaces the PortAudio and PortMidi support with
ALSA and alsaseq. PortAudio and PortMidi are still supported on systems
without ALSA. The "Bark scale" is now provided for spectrogram plotting,
which enhances the visibility of the audio wave in the frequency domain.
There were also some bugfixes and minor optimisations.

[021] - GNU ddrescue 1.2-rc1 (Development)
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Tue, Mar 21st 2006 13:51

System :: Recovery Tools

About: GNU ddrescue is a data recovery tool. It copies data from one file
or block device (hard disc, cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue
data in case of read errors. GNU ddrescue does not truncate the output
file if not asked to. So, every time you run it on the same output file,
it tries to fill in the gaps. The basic operation of GNU ddrescue is fully
automatic. That is, you don't have to wait for an error, stop the program,
read the log, run it in reverse mode, etc. If you use the logfile feature
of GNU ddrescue, the data is rescued very efficiently (only the needed
blocks are read). Also you can interrupt the rescue at any time and resume
it later at the same point.

Changes: A new option "--complete-only" that instructs ddrescue not to
read new data beyond log file limits has been added. A new argument parser
that replaces "getopt_long" has been added.

  Tue, Mar 21st 2006 13:52

Text Editors

About: GNU Moe is a powerful, 8-bit clean text editor for ISO-8859 and
ASCII character encodings. It has a modeless, user-friendly interface,
online help, multiple windows, unlimited undo/redo capability, unlimited
line length, global search/replace (on all buffers at once), block
operations, automatic indentation, word wrapping, filename completion, a
directory browser, duplicate removal from prompt histories, and delimiter
matching.

Changes: A menu of buffers has been added. A new chapter "Basic concepts"
has been added to the manual. A new argument parser taken from GNU ocrad
has been added. A buffer around "getch()" has been added to speed up
pastes. The efficiency of "append_record" has been improved for
consecutive overwrites. The efficiency of replaces has been improved,
especially consecutive ones. This release allows "reformat paragraph" to
be interrupted with Control-c, "F2" and "F3" to serve as their own abort
keys, and space to select items in menus.

Documentation
Software Development :: Documentation
System

About: The Heirloom Documentation Tools provide troff, nroff, and related
utilities to format manual pages and other documents for output on
terminals and printers. They are portable and enhanced versions of the
respective OpenSolaris utilities, which descend from ditroff and the
historical Unix troff. troff provides advanced typographical features such
as kerning, tracking, and hanging characters. It can access PostScript Type
1, OpenType, and TrueType fonts directly. Internationalized hyphenation,
international paper sizes, and UTF-8 input are supported.

Changes: A revised version of the "Nroff/Troff User's Manual" is now
available. Hyphenation is enabled by default. Several punctuation
characters that were previously taken from the special font are now taken
from the current font instead. Kerning pairs from font metrics files that
include "\[name]" characters now work correctly. Various other fixes and
optimizations regarding kerning have been made. Other fixes concern tables

[030] - Instant-Grid 0.3
  by Christian Boehme (http://freshmeat.net/users/cboehme/)
  Tue, Mar 21st 2006 11:18

Software Development :: Testing
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Instant-Grid is a Knoppix-based live-CD bundled with a
pre-configured grid environment based on the Globus Toolkit. One PC
started from this CD becomes the Instant-Grid frontend. It also functions
as a PXE boot-server, allowing other PCs in the same local network to boot
the Instant-Grid environment. Together with the frontend, these PCs
automatically form a working test grid. Like with the original Knoppix,
the existing configuration of the participating PC is not touched (except
maybe for enabling the PXE boot-option), and remains instantly available
by a simple reboot.

Changes: The most notable new feature of is the ability to use
Instant-Grids as render farms for the parallel rendering of single scenes
with POV-Ray (multiple scenes and movies are planned). A simple Web
interface to this feature is provided. Other changes include bugfixes for
the automatic setup of Ganglia, new Web interfaces to the functional
tests, and several optimizations and improvements of the existing
functionality.

higher-order logic), Isabelle/HOLCF (Scott's Logic for Computable
Functions with HOL), Isabelle/FOL (classical and intuitionistic
first-order logic), and Isabelle/ZF (Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory on top of
FOL).

Changes: This release contains major enhancements in specification
elements, the user interface, and proof tools. The most notable additions
on the theorem proving and specification side are interpretation of locale
expressions in theories, locales, and proof contexts, substantial library
improvements, proof tools for transitivity reasoning, and performance
improvements. On the user interface side, this release contains a new,
general find-theorems command (by term patterns, as intro/elim/simp rules
etc.), new commands for generating adhoc draft documents, and support for
Unicode proof documents.

[063] - Yakuake 2.7.5
  by Eike Hein (http://freshmeat.net/users/eikehein/)
  Tue, Mar 21st 2006 23:57

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals

About: Yakuake is a Quake-style terminal emulator based on KDE Konsole. It
features smoothly rolling down from the top of your screen, a tabbed
interface, configurable dimensions and animation speed, a skinnable GUI,
and a sophisticated DCOP interface.

Changes: Yakuake no longer spawns login shells in new sessions. A keyboard
shortcut to rename the selected session has been added. The keyboard
shortcuts and their names are now consistent with Konsole. A bug that led
to the tab bar not updating after a slotSelectSession DCOP call was issued
has been fixed. A bug that could lead to the slotRenameSession call failing
to set a session label has been fixed. Upon attempting to set an
all-whitespace session label, the label will now fall back to its prior
setting. A warning will now be displayed before quitting the application
with multiple tabs open.

[066] - zoem 06-080
  by Stijn van Dongen (http://freshmeat.net/users/micans/)
  Tue, Mar 21st 2006 04:04

Documentation
Software Development :: Documentation
Text Processing :: General

About: Zoem is a general-purpose macro/programming language that submits
text to a two-stage transformation process. Macro expansion and
interpretation is followed by application of customizable character
filtering rules. Zoem supports inside-out evaluation, comprehensive IO,
control operators, iteration, dictionary stacks, multidimensional data
storage, arithmetic expressions, regular expressions, system commands, and
more. PUD (Portable Unix Documentation) is shipped with zoem. It provides
two mini-languages for authoring manpages and FAQ documents.

Changes: User macros can now inspect arguments to check for vararg
key-value structure with the new \nargs#1 primitive, aiding macros that
can be extended in a backward compatible way. A long standing minor bug in
line count reporting was fixed. The \switch#2 primitive can now associate
multiple cases with a single branch. Within \write#3 invocations, the
session macro \__fnwrite__ is set to the name of the file being written
to.
