Wed, Mar 22nd 2006 02:18
Education
Software Development :: Documentation
System :: Systems Administration
About: The Advanced Bash Scripting Guide is both a reference and a
tutorial on shell scripting. This comprehensive book (the equivalent of
about 646 print pages) covers almost every aspect of shell scripting. It
contains over 300 profusely commented illustrative examples, and a number
of tables. Not just a shell scripting tutorial, this book also provides an
introduction to basic programming techniques, such as sorting and
recursion. It is well suited for either individual study or classroom use.
Changes: Minor rewriting was done in the "Miscellany" chapter. A few
command entries were added in various chapters. A couple of more example
scripts were added. The usual set of bugs were fixed.

Communications :: WAP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals
About: Anyterm provides a terminal emulator on a Web page using Javascript
and an Apache module. The module forks a shell and communicates with the
script using XMLHTTP on port 80, or securely using SSL. This provides you
with shell access to your machine from almost any Web browser, even when
firewalls are in the way. Experimental features include support for WAP
browsers and standalone operation without Apache, and the my.anyterm.org
service provides access without the need to install anything on your
servers.
Changes: This release fixes a bug that resulted in freezes when sessions
timed our or were closed. You should upgrade if you have seen this
problem. It also addresses a couple of build difficulties.

[005] - Axiomatic Multi-Platform C 1.4.0
by napi (http://freshmeat.net/users/napi/)
Wed, Mar 22nd 2006 05:09
Software Development :: Compilers
About: Axiomatic Multi-Platform C (AMPC) is a C compiler suite with an IDE
that generates Java bytecode to produce platform independent applicatons.
It supports a very large subset of ANSI C (1989). It can be used to
develop new applications using C as well as port existing applications
written in C to run on JVM enabled devices. A JNI (JVM Native Interface)
feature is available for calling native C or C++ functions. Also, numerous
Java methods can be called from AMPC. The asm() directive can be used to
embed Jasmin assembly code within C source code.
Changes: Error handling as well as error and warning messages have been
vastly improved for more effective programming.

[006] - BasKet 0.6.0Alpha2 (Development)
by Sebien (http://freshmeat.net/users/Sebien/)
Wed, Mar 22nd 2006 02:17
About: BasKet is a desktop organization tool inspired by DropDrawers (from
www.sigsoftware.com). It uses baskets and drawers for organizing various
objects, such as text, URLs, images, sounds, or other documents. Objects
in a basket can be edited, copied, moved, dragged, and so on. This allows
you to stay organized and free your desktop, or to take notes with various
types of content (not only text) in an easy way.
Changes: This release fixes a data loss risk that was present in every
0.6.0 Alpha 1 version. This version also contains new features originally
planned for Beta 1. Text editors don't close themselves anymore, and in
fact you don't need to close them anymore. The inserter right-part to
group a new note is now disabled. When filtering, all matching notes are
shown, even if they are hidden in a closed group. Keyboard navigation is
almost finished, and you can import from Tomboy and from KJots 0.7.

(http://freshmeat.net/users/faceless/)
Wed, Mar 22nd 2006 05:19
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Office/Business
About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support, verification for digital signatures and text
extraction. Both variations offer full Unicode support, encryption,
embedded TrueType and Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, spot and
calibrated color.
Changes: Support for PDF/A-1b:2005 as an OutputProfile was added. Bitmap
images appearing stretched in some cases were fixed. PDFs with exactly 1k
of junk at the end of the file are now parsed. Better font substition is
used in the viewer. Text can now be displayed in Multiple Master fonts.
Handling of File actions was improved. The position of images extracted
from PageParser was fixed. Documents with no initial color set are
correctly printed. The code now attempts to fail gracefully when
displaying some corrupt TrueType fonts.

[008] - bit 0.1.28
by Rick Vinyard (http://freshmeat.net/users/rvinyard/)
Wed, Mar 22nd 2006 02:41
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Widget Sets
About: bit is a library that makes it easier to dynamically manipulate
data buffers containing fields that do not have octet (byte) boundaries.
An example is the IP header, which is generally dealt with at compile time
via bit fields in a structure. A key feature of the bit library is support
for loading data formats described in XML files and dynamically parsing
those fields at run time. This library was initially created to support
reading various kinds of robotic device I/O (IR sensors, motors), but it
has also been used for run time parsing of IP, TCP, UDP, and RTP headers.
Changes: The dependency on the conexus library was removed, and a small
change was made to allow building on Fedora Core 5. A few minor changes
were made to the Data class, and the smart pointer syntax was cleaned up.

[015] - Conary 1.0.9
by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Wed, Mar 22nd 2006 13:48
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: Many update improvements, and significantly enhanced
documentation for writing recipes.

About: Damn Small Linux is a business-card size (50MB) Live CD Linux
distribution. Despite its minuscule size it strives to have a functional
and easy to use desktop.
Changes: New auto mydsl: an auto scan for a directory named mydsl will
automatically load extensions. DSL natively booted can now recognize the
Qemu virtual hard disk. This allows for shared backup. Qemu has been
upgraded to 0.8 for both Windows and Linux. There is a new background
image (Saturn) to match the current theme. Duplicate saves of wireless and
printer are stopped. The boot options frugal and toram, when used together,
would try to remount /dev/shm; this has been fixed. .xinitrc has been
updated with another correction for better German keyboard support.

Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Systems Administration
About: DB Solo is a powerful database development and management tool for
developers and DBAs. It has an intuitive user interface that allows you to
explore and manage your database objects as well as execute ad-hoc queries.
It supports Oracle, MySQL, Sybase, DB2, Solid, PostgreSQL, and MS SQL
Server. In addition to viewing and managing objects such as schemas,
tables, indexes, views, tablespaces, users, roles, sessions, and stored
procedures, you can view, edit, print, and export data from tables or the
results of queries. You can also graphically view foreign key
relationships.
Changes: The schema comparison tool was improved so that comparison
results can now be viewed and saved as text. More PostgreSQL features were
added, including the ability to add/drop indexes, constraints, columns, and
sequences. Oracle function-based indexes were fixed so that they are now
shown correctly.

Software Development :: Object Brokering
About: EJOE is a lightweight Java client/server component built to send
and receive objects through pluggable (de)serialization mechanisms. It
offers a high-performance, simple, and clean object request broker
(whereby ORB is meant in its natural manner and not in its relation with
CORBA), with server and client components for your client/server
applications. It's a highly scalable implementation of the common
request-process-response pattern based on Java NIO. It does support
optional remote class loading to avoid redundant classpath entries, but
doesn't require stubs and/or proxy objects.
Changes: Two critical bugs have been fixed: A critical, time consuming
lock occurred on some systems. The server component doesn't require
applications to offer an application loop to avoid termination by reaching
the end of the code. This version also contains some enhancements
originally planned for the next major release, and is most likely the most
efficient version to date.

About: EMIPLIB is a library to facilitate the development of programs that
need to stream several kinds of media over IP. The library consists of
several kinds of components that can be linked together in various ways,
thereby providing a flexible framework. It also provides some ready-to-use
classes for the transmission of audio and video over IP. Streams
originating from the same participant can be synchronized.
Changes: A bugfix was made in the audio session. An ESD output component
and a libaudiofile input component were added. Several components can now
use integer based samples instead of only floating point samples, for
better performance on devices without floating point unit.

[043] - Java Parallel Processing Framework 0.12.0
by Laurent Cohen (http://freshmeat.net/users/lolocohen/)
Wed, Mar 22nd 2006 08:15
Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: Java Parallel Processing Framework is a set of tools and APIs to
facilitate the parallelization of CPU intensive applications, and
distribute their execution over a network of heterogenous nodes. It is
intended to run in clusters and grids. It features platform independence
thanks to Java 1.5, does not require you to deploy your application
classes to a server, scales up to thousands of nodes, has a built-in
fail-over mechanism on all the framework's components, and has a
monitoring and administration GUI tool to enable remote monitoring of the
server health and server shutdown/restart operations.
Changes: This release brings one new important feature and a documented
overview of JPPF. A password protection mechanism was implemented in the
administration tool. An admin password is now required to send an
administration request to the server. The default password is "admin" and
can be changed from the tool as well. An overview of JPPF was documented
as a set of slides (presentation). This will serve as the basis for a more
complete user guide.

[048] - libferris 1.1.90
by Ben Martin (http://freshmeat.net/users/monkeyiq/)
Wed, Mar 22nd 2006 07:48
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Filesystems
About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using
C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each file or
directory to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various
data sources and expose them as filesystems and to generate interesting
EA. Current implementations include native (kernel disk IO with fam), XML
(mount an XML file as a filesystem), DB4, xmldb, Evolution, Firefox,
Emacs, LDAP, HTTP, FTP, eet, sockets, RDF/XML, RDF/bdb, and mbox. EA
generators include image, audio, and animation decoders.
Changes: The ability to perform full data journal across processes for
mounted XML was added. The ability to mount libobby was added. A new index
module was added to invoke an external perl script for results. The VM
system updated and optimized. The FerrisCopy code now preserves RDF
metadata as RDF at the destination, and gracefully downgrades kernel EA
into RDF if the destination doesn't support kernel EA. A resource leak in
the Xine plugin was fixed. Handling of larger Etagere is now more
efficient. Logic for using sendfile(2) for file copying was added.

About: MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original
tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your
console (with ncurses). Merging of 2 or more log files is possible. It can
also use colors while displaying the log files (through regular
expressions) for faster recognition of what is important. It can also
filter lines (again with regular expressions). It has interactive menus

can also have windows with the output of shell scripts and other software.
When viewing the output of external software, MultiTail can mimic the
functionality of tools like 'watch'.
Changes: Control characters can be displayed in caret notation. One can
now send signals to running commands. The last exit status of a command
(when using -l/-L with -R) is now displayed in the statusline. When a
window closes, the exitcode of the command that ran is displayed. A pppd
colorscheme was added. Screendump functionality was added. logfiles can
now be truncated from within multitail (press 'T'). The default umask for
created files can be set in the configuration file. The line editor was
improved. 8-bit text encodings were printed incorrectly in reverse.

Internet
Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
System :: Monitoring
About: PHREL is a per host rate limiter. It will track the rate of
incoming traffic on a server and insert a chain into iptables when a
configured threshold is crossed. The inserted chain may either rate limit
or block the offending host for a period of time. The inserted chain is
automatically removed when the offending host's traffic levels return to
normal. PHREL is particularly well suited to protecting nameservers (DNS)
from random hosts that flood requests, and to preventing SSH brute force
login attempts.
Changes: An assert failure on incoming traffic from 0.0.0.0/32 (spoofed)
was fixed. Support for SNMP traps was added. A MIB for PHREL was created

[073] - pmacct 0.10.0
by Paolo Lucente (http://freshmeat.net/users/plucente/)
Wed, Mar 22nd 2006 14:01
Internet :: Log Analysis
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: pmacct is a small set of IPv4/IPv6 accounting and aggregation
tools. A pluggable architecture allows you to store collected traffic data
into memory tables or SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite 3.x) databases. It
supports fully customizable historical data breakdown, flow sampling,
filtering and tagging, recovery actions, and triggers. Libpcap, NetFlow
v1/v5/v7/v8/v9, and sFlow v2/v4/v5 are supported, both unicast and
multicast. Also, a client program makes it easy to export data to tools
like RRDtool, GNUPlot, Net-SNMP, MRTG, and Cacti.
Changes: Collectors are now compiled exporting the full dynamic symbol
table, which allows DSO classifiers to call routines included in the
collector code. The classifiers table is now loaded in a shared memory
segment to keep plugins updated about the changes, and is dynamically
allocated at runtime, allowing an arbitrary number of classifiers to be
loaded. The Pre-Tagging infrastructure adds two new primitives to tag
network traffic: src_as and dst_as. The PostgreSQL plugin no longer makes
use of exclusive locks whenever the sql_dont_try_update directive is
activated.
