About: Annotate provides an annotation facility for DocBook documents. It
enables visitors to an online version of a DocBook document to add
comments to any paragraph or chapter of the document. It extends the
DocBook XSL stylesheets, leading to modified HTML output which contains
anchors at those places where annotations can be made. Comments and notes
are stored in a DBMS. A CGI program then merges the HTML document and the
comments to produce the output for the visitor.

[002] - anyfs-tools 0.83.3b
  by unDEFER (http://freshmeat.net/users/undefer/)
  Fri, Mar 24th 2006 10:38

System :: Filesystems
System :: Recovery Tools

About: anyfs-tools allows you to recover and convert filesystems while
using minimal extra disk space. Unlike other recovery tools, anyfs-tools
doesn't copy all the files found on other disks (or partitions), but only
saves information about the location of the file blocks to an external
inode table. After recovery, a user may mount the damaged filesystem with
anyfs and the external inode table and then interact with all recovered
files with any program.

Changes: There are no more kernel headers in userspace; there are ext2fs
headers only. A bug in anyfs/inode.c was fixed: there was no #include
&ltasm/uaccess.h&gt. A bug in MakeFiles was fixed: it skipped the
src/anysurrect/scan_pes directory in 'make clean' and 'make depend'.

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: aria2 is a utility for downloading files. It has completely new
design concept from its predecessor, Aria, and is written from scratch.
aria2 has a segmented downloading engine in its core. It can download one
file from multiple URLs or multiple connections from one URL. This results
in very high speed downloading, much faster than ordinary browsers. This
engine in was implemented in a single-thread model. The architecture is
clean and easy to extend. aria2 currently supports HTTP, FTP, and
BitTorrent.

Changes: This release fixes memory leaks and bugs related to file copying.
Some performance tuning has been made to reduce message traffic to the
peers.

[004] - Axiomatic Multi-Platform C 1.4.0 (Mac OS X)
  by napi (http://freshmeat.net/users/napi/)
  Fri, Mar 24th 2006 05:58

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Axiomatic Multi-Platform C (AMPC) is a C compiler suite with an IDE
that generates Java bytecode to produce platform independent applicatons.
It supports a very large subset of ANSI C (1989). It can be used to
develop new applications using C as well as port existing applications
written in C to run on JVM enabled devices. A JNI (JVM Native Interface)
feature is available for calling native C or C++ functions. Also, numerous
Java methods can be called from AMPC. The asm() directive can be used to
embed Jasmin assembly code within C source code.

Changes: Error handling and error and warning messages have been improved
for more effective programming.

[005] - beancounter 0.8.6
  by Dirk Eddelbuettel (http://freshmeat.net/users/eddelbuettel/)
  Fri, Mar 24th 2006 01:27

Office/Business :: Financial
Office/Business :: Financial :: Investment

About: beancounter enables stockmarket data analysis and performance
evaluation. It has two main modes. The first is data gathering - both
current data (e.g. closing prices, high, low, volume etc.) and historical
price data can be retrieved efficiently using multiple securities per
requests, and stored in an SQL database (PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQLite are
supported) via easy command line operations. The second mode is data
analysis, based on the previously stored data. This comprises various
performance reports, as well as a Value-at-Risk analysis. beancounter is
implemented as a Perl module, and a Perl command-line frontend to the
module. It supports different stock markets from around the globe, foreign
exchange rates, US mutual funds, and US options.

Changes: The SQL insert/update logic was corrected for data updates
without open/high/low/volume entries such as for mutual fund prices. The
host variable may now be set from the rc file. The utility scripts
setup_beancounter and update_beancounter were changed to bash scripts,
since some smaller shell implementations may fail to execute them.

Desktop Environment :: Tools
Software Development

About: BitRock InstallBuilder allows you to create easy-to-use installers
for Linux (x86/PPC), Windows, OS X, FreeBSD, Solaris (x86/Sparc), IRIX,
AIX, and HP-UX applications. The generated installer for an application
has a native look-and-feel and no external dependencies, and can be run in
GUI, text, and unattended modes.

Changes: The add user action can now take a home directory argument. New
environment variables my_hostame and my_ipaddr. Shortcuts can now be
conditionally installed using rule lists. A new license page parameter
allows multiple license pages. A fix for the getting free disk space
action on Mac OS X systems. A fix for passing CLI options on the Windows
platform. Fonts for the license and text pages have been fixed.

  Fri, Mar 24th 2006 08:09

Communications
Internet
System :: Networking

About: BongoSurfer is a least-cost router for Linux, like the Smartsurfer
program for Windows. It allows you to connect to the Internet with a 56k
modem or ISDN, and chooses the cheapest provider for you. The tariff
database is updated every day from http://www.billiger-surfen.de/. Since
the tariffs only apply within Germany, the program is of little use in
other countries. It features a cost calculator, a traffic monitor, an
online timer, and more.

Changes: This release integrates Teleview, a program which shows the
cheapest prefixes for phoning, supports CAPI-ISDN, and improves security.

team from one such league: you form the team, buy and sell players, get
promoted or relegated, and of course try to be successful.

Changes: This release adds a definition for Sweden and a Swedish
translation, a splash screen, and a definition for Euro 2008. It fixes a
bug that led to a "cup not found" exit after a few seasons and a minor
youth academy bug.

[011] - ByteName 1.7
  by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
  Fri, Mar 24th 2006 01:32

Text Processing

About: ByteName is a tool that for each byte of the input prints a line
consisting of the byte offset, the byte in hex, octal, binary, and
decimal, and its description in a selected single-byte encoding. A command
line flag suppresses printing of lines corresponding to ASCII characters,
which is useful for locating stray non-ASCII codes. It can also generate a
chart for a specified encoding or, for a specified codepoint, generate
descriptions in all known encodings.

Changes: An option has been added that lists the description in all known
encodings for a specified codepoint. This is useful when trying to
identify the encoding of a piece of text. Six additional MS Windows
codepages are now supported.

[012] - Common UNIX Printing System 1.2rc1
  by Michael Sweet (http://freshmeat.net/users/easysw/)
  Fri, Mar 24th 2006 13:35

Internet
Printing
Software Development :: Libraries

About: CUPS provides a portable printing layer for Unix(r)-based operating
systems. It has been developed to promote a standard printing solution for
all Unix vendors and users. CUPS provides the System V and Berkeley
command line interfaces, and uses the Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP")
as the basis for managing print jobs and queues. The Line Printer Daemon
(LPD) Server Message Block (SMB), and AppSocket (a.k.a. JetDirect)
protocols are also supported with reduced functionality. CUPS adds network
printer browsing and PostScript Printer Description ("PPD") based printing
options to support real world printing under UNIX. It includes an image
file RIP that supports printing of image files to non-PostScript printers.
A customized version of GNU Ghostscript 7.05 for CUPS called ESP
Ghostscript is available separately to support printing of PostScript
files within the CUPS driver framework. Sample drivers for Dymo, EPSON,
HP, and OKIDATA printers are included that use these filters.

Changes: This release candidate fixes all known bugs in the 1.2b2 release.

[014] - delsafe 0.2.0
  by psds (http://freshmeat.net/users/psdasilva/)
  Fri, Mar 24th 2006 17:19

About: delsafe is a set of utilities to hopefully allow you to recover
recently deleted files. Basically, when you delete or in certain cases
overwrite a file the original file is moved into a trash can. It does this
by overriding the original unlink, rename, open, and fopen library calls
using the Linux LD_PRELOAD mechanism. Trash cans are placed on top of each
mount point and are accessible by each user directly or through links
placed in the user's home directory. This makes deletion very fast
because, in fact, it is only a renaming. To each filename in the trash can
is appended a time/version stamp.

Changes: First stable release. Code and documentation cleanup.

  Fri, Mar 24th 2006 17:40

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Capture :: Digital Camera
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Multimedia :: Video

About: DVD-Baker generates a DVD consisting of menus and slideshows from a
picture collection stored in a Menalto Gallery G2 Web site or in a locally
stored directory tree. Each "leaf" album (an album that does not contain
sub-albums) is used to create a slideshow. The slideshows (and any
DVD-ready MPEG videos) are made accessible on the DVD with menus that
follow the structure of the Web site or directories. Extra features
include random or sequential autoplay, and audio support. Since
dvd-slideshow is used to produce each slideshow, it supports effects such
as crossfades, crops, and 'Ken Burns' effects.

Changes: Significant improvements have been made, including an updated
dir-dvd-recipe, audio support (including generic and MIDI conversion),
support for converting generic image types, improved compatibility with
bash 2.05b (Debian Sarge), menu overflow handling, differential slideshow
and menu recreation, and more detailed progress indication.

[020] - fastutil 5.0
  by Sebastiano Vigna (http://freshmeat.net/users/vigna/)
  Fri, Mar 24th 2006 08:06

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: fastutil extends the Java Collections Framework by providing
type-specific maps, sets, lists, and queues for Java with a small memory
footprint and fast access and insertion; it also includes a fast I/O API
for binary and text files. The classes implement their standard
counterpart interfaces (e.g., Map for maps) and can be plugged into
existing code. Besides the usual features, fastutil provides
reference-based containers (which do not use equals() to compare objects)
and linked structures. Most iterators provided by fastutil classes are
bidirectional, or even implement the standard list iterator interface.

Changes: This release needs Java 5 and marks a revolution in the way the
classes are organized. fastutil is now strongly based on covariant
return-type overriding. A method x() returning an object of type T can now
be overridden by a method returning an object of type U, where U is a
subclass of (or implements) T.

[045] - otl 0.41
  by david a thompson (http://freshmeat.net/users/thomp/)
  Fri, Mar 24th 2006 13:22

Text Processing :: General

About: otl is intended to convert a text file to a HTML or XHTML file. It
is different than many other text-to-HTML programs in that the input
format (by default a simple highly readable plain text format) can be
customized by the user, and the output format (by default XHTML) can be
user-defined. It can process complex structures such as ordered and
unordered lists (nested or not), and add custom "headers" and "footers" to
documents. The conversion utilizes Perl regex, adding quite a bit of
flexibility and power to the conversion process. Since both the syntax of
the source file and of the output can be readily customized, otl in theory
can be used for many types of conversions. The package also includes
tag-remove, a script for stripping HTML/XHTML-ish tags from documents.

Changes: The "chempretty" script has been removed and replaced with a more
general script, "otlsub". With otlsub, you can perform a set of
search/replace operations on a set of files using a Perl regex for
matching. otlsub supports recursion, allowing you to descend through a
directory tree and process all files matching a filename pattern. otlsub
automatically adjusts references to local files in hyperlinks depending on
directory depth. New otl features include a --descend option (recursive
descent through all subdirectories) and various other minor modifications.

Software Development :: Debuggers

About: remake is a patched and modernized version of GNU make utility
that adds improved error reporting, the ability to trace execution in a

[054] - Restlet 1.0 beta 7
  by Jerome (http://freshmeat.net/users/jlouvel/)
  Fri, Mar 24th 2006 07:48

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: Restlet is a framework that brings the simplicity and efficiency of
the REST architectural style to Java developers. It is composed of two
parts, the Restlet API (alternative to Servlet API) and a reference
implementation (Noelios Restlet Engine). It supports all REST concepts
(resource, representation, data, connector, components, etc.) and is
suitable for both client and server REST applications. The server
connectors provided are HTTP(S), AJP (via Mortbay's Jetty or an adapter
Servlet) and the client connectors are HTTP(S), JDBC, and SMTP (via
JavaMail).

Changes: This release refactors the NRE packages. It's now easier to
distinguish the extra classes provided by the NRE implementation
(LogChainlet, DirectoryRestlet, etc.). FreeMarker has been updated to
version 2.3.6. Support has been added for the Java Service Wrapper tool to
let you run Restlet applications as native services. Binaries for Windows
x86-32 and Linux x86-32 platforms are provided, but other platforms are
also supported. A skeleton configuration file is also provided in the
"bin" directory.

  by Crimperman (http://freshmeat.net/users/crimperman/)
  Fri, Mar 24th 2006 10:43

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Office/Business

About: Ryan's In/Out Board (formerly known as Whosin) is a simple and
quick Perl-driven Web-based in/out board for use on intranets and
extranets. Users can change their status by clicking their name or calling
the script with a name parameter, allowing for desktop shortcuts which give
single click "check-in/out" links. Custom and/or default comments can be
added to their status. No database system is required, you just need a Web
server and Perl. A script to check all staff out is also provided, which is
handy if called as an overnight cron job. It uses the Date::EzDate Perl
module.

Changes: A few people were having problems with data files not being
written to. This version will print read/write errors to the browser if it
encounters them. It does not fix any read/write issues similar to the ones
people were experiencing, because there's nothing to fix as such. Those
errors were related to filesystem permissions and thus beyond the realm of
the script.

[059] - ShaniXmlParser 1.3.6
  by Quentin Anciaux (http://freshmeat.net/users/allcolor/)
  Fri, Mar 24th 2006 13:34

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup

About: ShaniXmlParser is an XML/HTML DOM/SAX parser that can be
validating. It can parse badly formed XML files. It can parse files with
inverted tags and bad escaped &,< and >. It expands all HTML entities. It
is well suited to parse HTML files. It is up to 3 times faster than the
internal JDK 1.5 xerces parser and as fast as the internal JDK 1.4 Crimson
parser, compliant with the jaxp/w3c DOM interfaces, and very small.

Changes: An infinite loop in the DTD parser that appeared in some special
DTD has been fixed. The getReader method, which did not fill entirely its
buffer and failed to correctly determine the charset for HTML files, has
been fixed.

are supported). The Web UI is used for search and crawl monitoring. Files
and directories are indexed and searched by their paths and some other
external attributes, not contents. Historical data (deleted files and
offline hosts information) is indexed, which allows you to have
full-fledged RSS notifications about added, changed, and deleted files in
search results.

[068] - Synbak 1.0.2
  by Ugo Viti (http://freshmeat.net/users/ugoviti/)
  Fri, Mar 24th 2006 10:41

About: Synbak is an application designed to unify several backup methods.
It provides a powerful reporting system and a very simple interface for
configuration files. It can make backups using rsync (over the ssh, rsync,
smb, and cifs protocols), tar (tar, tar.gz, and tar.bz2) archives, tape
(even using multi-loader changer tapes), LDAP databases, MySQL databases,
CDR/CD-RW/DVR/DVD-RW, and more. It can make reports using email, HTML
pages, and RSS feeds. Developers can easily write new backup methods,
reports, and translations.

Changes: Shows the Synbak version in the title of HTML reports. Adds some
useful comments to the example.conf file. Adds a new config directive.
backup_no_make_destdir is useful if you don't want to automatically create
the destination backupdir. This always assumes backup_incremental=no, and
is useful on rsync backup only. The tar method can produce flat tar
archives without compression.

[069] - Systrace 1.6
  by Niels Provos (http://freshmeat.net/users/nielsprovos/)
  Fri, Mar 24th 2006 01:40

Security

About: Systrace enforces system call policies for applications by
constraining the application's access to the system. The policy is
generated interactively. Operations not covered by the policy raise an
alarm, allowing the user to refine the currently configured policy. After
a policy has been sufficiently constructed, further alarms often indicate
security problems. Policies can also be generated automatically for
sandboxing purposes.

Changes: This release supports Linux without requiring kernel changes.
Instead of using Systrace' system call interposition interface, this
version supports a ptrace-based backend for unmodified Linux kernels.

ASCII equivalents including: hexadecimal and decimal HTML and SGML numeric
character references, \u-escapes, standard hexadecimal, raw hexadecimal,
and RFC2396 URI format. Such ASCII equivalents are useful for entering
Unicode in program source or in programs that are not 8-bit safe, and for
testing and debugging. Several options allow Unicode to be converted to
approximately equivalent ASCII, e.g. by stripping diacritics. An optional
GUI is provided.

Changes: This release fixes a bug that triggered an error in the GUI u2a
when neither TMP nor TEMP is defined in the environment.
