[001] - aria2 0.4.1
  by SlotGazer (http://freshmeat.net/users/slotgazer/)
  Sat, Apr 29th 2006 13:44

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: aria2 is a utility for downloading files. It has completely new
design concept from its predecessor, Aria, and is written from scratch.
aria2 has a segmented downloading engine in its core. It can download one
file from multiple URLs or multiple connections from one URL. This results
in very high speed downloading, much faster than ordinary browsers. This
engine in was implemented in a single-thread model. The architecture is
clean and easy to extend. aria2 currently supports HTTP, FTP, and
BitTorrent.

Changes: This release changes the choking algorithm and adds the new way
to specify files to download for multi-file torrents. An ability to
throttle upload speed was also added, but it's still experimental.

[002] - CastPodder 5.0
  by Scott Grayban (http://freshmeat.net/users/EvilBorg/)
  Sat, Apr 29th 2006 13:40

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: CastPodder is a media aggregator that automatically downloads
podcasts to your computer or portable device, leaving you 'one click away'
from the latest media feeds. It is based on the iPodder idea of Adam Curry.
PyBMP is needed.

Changes: Lots of neat things and major feedburner fixes were added. All
downloads can be deleted in one click. FB feeds are now bypassed using the
original feed URL.

  Sat, Apr 29th 2006 11:38

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Systems Administration

About: ccollect does (pseudo) incremental full backups with different
exclude lists, using hard links and rsync.

Changes: "pax" (Posix) is now required. "cp -al" (GNU specific) was
removed. "interval" was written with two "l" (ell), which is wrong in
English. The colon in the interval was removed from the name of backup
directories. ccollect will now exit when preexec returns non-zero.
ccollect now reports when postexec returns non-zero. The change to pax
should not feature complte POSIX / UNIX compatibility.

[004] - Chess Training Tools 1.2.14
  by dkappe (http://freshmeat.net/users/dkappe/)
  Sat, Apr 29th 2006 01:05

Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy

About: Chess Training Tools is a collection of chess training tools. It
includes a chess visualization trainer that teaches chess visualization by
drilling you on the color of a particular square, and also on your ability
to tell if two squares are the same color, if two (or three) squares are
on the same diagonal, if two squares are a knight move apart, or if two
squares are two knight moves apart. It includes a weak chess program
(called Vince) that lets you lag the display by several ply, hide all
pieces or all pawns, and block out quadrants of the board. Furthermore, it
includes an opening memorization trainer. The Palm & Pocket PC versions are
missing the mate, opening trainer, and Vince.

Changes: This release added undo, or move takeback to the PlayTest
("Vince").

  Sat, Apr 29th 2006 10:29

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Recovery Tools

About: chpox provides transparent checkpointing and restarting of
processes on Linux clusters. It was originally designed for recovering of
tasks that takes long execution time (i.e. numerical simulations) in case
of system crashes, power failures, etc. It may work with openMosix, is SMP
safe, works as a kernel module, does not require kernel patches or program
recompiling/relinking, and supports virtual memory, regular open files,
pipes, Unix domain sockets, current directory, and child processes.

Changes: This release fixes errors that prevented chpox from compiling
with newer versions of binutils. Linux kernel version 2.4.32 is now
supported.

  Sat, Apr 29th 2006 12:47

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Filesystems

About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using
C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each file or
directory to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various
data sources and expose them as filesystems and to generate interesting
EA. Current implementations include native (kernel disk IO with fam), XML
(mount an XML file as a filesystem), DB4, xmldb, Evolution, Firefox,
Emacs, LDAP, HTTP, FTP, eet, sockets, RDF/XML, RDF/bdb, and mbox. EA
generators include image, audio, and animation decoders.

Changes: A new ferris-filesystem-to-xsltfs-sheets command was added to
automatically generate a set of forward and reverse xslt sheets to obtain
a desired document format. A proof of concept example generates a virtual
Excel 2003 document from a mounted PostgreSQL database. Reverse xsltfs
stylesheets now resolve updates using relative paths by default.
PostgreSQL mounting now exposes some schema metadata. Initial support for
namespaces in mounted XML was added. A bad interaction of implicit "-d"
for ferrisls and overmounting was fixed. Small bugfixes were made for gcc
4.1.x.

  by lrem (http://freshmeat.net/users/lrem/)
  Sat, Apr 29th 2006 23:51

Database

About: MySQL Quota Daemon is a lightweight tool for limiting database
sizes. As the MySQL server has no support for preventing a disk from
getting filled up, an external one is needed. Other solutions are often
bloated or too obscure to use. This one keeps a low profile, being both
nice to the system it runs on and easy to use. A basic front end for
simple management and informing of any quota violation is included.

Changes: This new Lite version doesn't need HTML::Template. Any bugs found
in the default 0.5 release have been fixed in both branches.

[028] - nut 11.4
  by Jim Jozwiak (http://freshmeat.net/users/jozwiak/)
  Sat, Apr 29th 2006 13:53

Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 18, which contains 7,146 foods and
136 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals, fats,
calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the essential
polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are expressed
as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of food labeling
in the United States, but also can be fully customized. Foods can be added
from recipes or food labels, and nutrient intake can be graphed. The
program is completely menu-driven and there are no commands to learn.

Changes: This release reduces the polyunsaturated fatty acid reference
values for Omega-3.

Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: The Object Extensions for PHP provides several classes that add
runtime object extension and callbacks to the language. It allows the
programmer to add methods and properties to an object at runtime by
dynamically extending by another object. It also allows the creation of
object property lists that allow for dynamic setting/getting of values in
a fashion similar to JavaScript objects. These object property lists
support basic value checking.

[031] - pacKAGE oRGANIZER 1.10.7
  by David Rosal (http://freshmeat.net/users/davidrr/)
  Sat, Apr 29th 2006 11:17

System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Systems Administration

About: Paco (pacKAGE oRGANIZER) is a simple, yet powerful tool to aid
package management when installing programs from source code. It uses the
LD_PRELOAD method to track package installations, and provides various
options to keep the installed software organized. It's mainly a command
line application but it has also an optional GTK+ interface.

Changes: Symlinks were not properly logged in paco-1.10.6. There's a new
feature in gpaco: removing files can be interrupted with a "Stop" button
and resumed again with a "Resume" button. There's a new option "--owner",
which is just a more intuitive alias for "--query". The option
"-V|--variable" has changed its behavior. The script pacoball has been
enhanced and reintroduced into the main paco distribution.
