[001] - Adobe Source Libraries 1.0.16
by Foster T. Brereton (http://freshmeat.net/users/fbrereto/)
Fri, May 5th 2006 01:04
Software Development :: Internationalization
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Localization
About: The Adobe Source Libraries (ASL) are a collection of C++ libraries
building foundation technology to allow the construction of commercial
applications by assembling generic algorithms through declarative
descriptions.
Changes: The adobe::filter algorithm was added. This is similar to
adobe::transform, but the op function is passed an instance of an
output_iterator and can generate more than (or fewer than) a single
result. adobe::file_monitor_t was added, and is a utility for being
notified of when a file is modified on-disk by a third party. Many updates
were made to the Generic Image Library (GIL). Significant updates were made
to the ASL documentation.

[002] - Aircrack-ng 0.5
by Thomas d'Otreppe (http://freshmeat.net/users/aircrackng/)
Fri, May 5th 2006 00:38
Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking
About: aircrack-ng is a set of tools for auditing wireless networks. It's
an enhanced/reborn version of aircrack. It consists of airodump (an 802.11
packet capture program), aireplay (an 802.11 packet injection program),
aircrack (static WEP and WPA-PSK cracking), airdecap (decrypts WEP/WPA
capture files), and some tools to handle capture files (merge, convert,
etc.).
Changes: airodump-ng now hops on 2.4Ghz channels by default and supports
OpenWrt devices (using prism0 as the capture interface). When starting,
airodump-ng no longer incorrectly captures data on channel 10. Korek
chopchop was optimized for aircrack-ng and aireplay-ng. A bug in which
aircrack-ng did not use all CPUs on SMP systems was fixed.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Message Boards
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: News/Diary
About: The Atom Publishing Protocol framework for Ruby aims to simplify
the implementation of Atom Publishing Protocol (APP) support in Web
applications. It achieves this by implementing a framework that handles
the protocol-level duties for the programmer, while not making any
requirements for the site design.
Changes: This release fixes some showstopper bugs and brings the framework
functionality closer to the APP specification 0.8.

Internet
Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Avahi is a framework for Multicast DNS Service Discovery
(mDNS/DNS-SD a.k.a. Zeroconf) on Linux. It allows programs to publish and
discover services running on a local network with no specific
configuration. For example, you can plug into a network and instantly find
printers to print to, files to look at, and people to talk to.
Changes: Fixes a buffer overflow in avahi-core. Refuses to process invalid
UTF8 data. Automatically reconnects to the DBUS if kicked. Doesn't hit an
assert() in the client libs when the Avahi daemon is terminated.
Enumerates all service types in the database in the Service Discovery
Applet for Gnome. Deals properly with local non-ASCII hostnames. AMD-64
and FreeBSD portability fixes. Double DNS server entries in avahi-dnsconfd
are filtered. A locking bug in avahi-sharp's EntryGroup.AddService() has
been fixed. This release has been ported to Solaris (incomplete).

[006] - Backup Manager 0.7.3 (Development)
by Alexis SUKRIEH (http://freshmeat.net/users/sukria/)
Fri, May 5th 2006 00:32
About: Backup Manager is a tool for generating archives easily. It is
designed for those who don't want an obfuscated tool for backing up their
system. It can make tar, tar.gz, tar.bz2, and zip archives, can perform
incremental backups, and can upload archives to remote hosts with FTP,
SSH, or RSYNC. It can be run in a parallel mode with different
configuration files. The configuration file is simple to understand. The
backup process can also be customized thanks to hook scripts.
Changes: This release provides two new upload methods. The first one is
called "ssh-gpg" and lets you upload your locally-built archives to
untrusted remote places. During the upload (which is performed with SSH),
the archives are encrypted using GPG. The other one, called "s3", is able
to upload your archives to the Amazon S3 Storage service (if you have a
valid account). This release also comes with a couple of bugfixes (so
filenames with spaces are now fully supported) and provides some new
options.

[007] - BasicQuery 01.02.00
by David Read (http://freshmeat.net/users/Monead/)
Fri, May 5th 2006 21:32
Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Testing
About: BasicQuery is a Java-based application used to access databases
through JDBC. It features a Swing-based GUI and includes capabilities
useful to developers when testing SQL statements against a database. It
also produces timing information, which is valuable during tuning
exercises.
Changes: This production release encompasses support for 6 languages, a
soft-reference-based results cache, and numerous options for controlling
application behavior, including reporting of client and server details.
Upgrading is recommended. On the source code side, this version completes
the integration of log4j, JUnit, and Cobertura. The test suite is fairly
complete, other than automating the testing of the GUI components.

About: bbsengine is a modular, object-oriented application framework that
implements and manages templates, permissions, membership, database
access, etc. It includes modules that allow for news, forums, links, and
so forth.
Changes: Use of the Smarty Template engine was improved, and the way the
forums work was redesigned. The potential for SQL-injection type attacks
has been mitigated. Please note that this is a beta-quality release.

[009] - BitTorrent 4.9.2 (Beta)
by Moritz Barsnick (http://freshmeat.net/users/barsnick/)
Fri, May 5th 2006 07:36
Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
System :: Software Distribution
About: BitTorrent is a tool for copying files from one machine to another.
FTP punishes sites for being popular. Since all uploading is done from one
place, a popular site needs big iron and big bandwidth. With BitTorrent,
clients automatically mirror files they download, making the publisher's
burden almost nothing.
Changes: This release features a completely new UI, the introduction of
smart download/queuing behavior (as well as smart seeding behavior), a
torrent priority system, encryption support, download rate control, fast
extensions, and torrent "title" support. Progress bars, transfer rate
graphs, error handling, and reporting have been improved.

About: Bounce-O-Matic reads through the system log files at a specified
time interval (via cron)and finds unwanted attempted logins. It writes
these attempts to an iptables drop file and emits a drop command to
iptables. The script was developed with the idea of getting some
immediate results from a basic setup of iptables, SSH, and Snort.

Fri, May 5th 2006 07:56
Software Development :: Internationalization
Software Development :: Libraries
About: cintoo Messages is a framework to make internationalization easier
for Java applications. It supports locales for threads, and bundles can be
associated with different packages. This allows the usage of different
bundles for different parts of the application, such as plugins, an
installer, or a logging system. Bundles can be managed and associated with
packages without any changes in the code. This makes bundle management and
refactoring much easier than with other solutions. cintoo Messages
supports global locales for client applications written in Swing or SWT
and thread-local ones for serverside Web applications.

[014] - ColorExplorer 1.6
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
Fri, May 5th 2006 15:47
Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: User Interfaces
About: ColorExplorer is a tool for exploring the color space and finding
out how colors, color names, and numerical color specifications are
related. The user can specify a color by selecting its name from a list of
color names, by adjusting sliders that control the mixture of red, green,
and blue, by entering a numerical color specification, by copying it from
the history list or elsewhere on the display, or by requesting a random
color. The numerical specification of the current color and an example of
that color are shown in a pair of adjacent boxes. The color name list may
be searched by entering a regular expression or by requesting the closest
match to the current color.
Changes: It is now possible to copy the color from a chosen pixel on the
display if your window system is X11.The ordering of color names now
groups similar colors better. Positioning of the color name balloons has
been improved.

[015] - Conary 1.0.14
by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Fri, May 5th 2006 10:34
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: Branches have been deprecated in favor of shadows. Cvc merge can
now merge to arbitrary versions, not just the latest. The repository
server can log all XML calls.

now goes directly to rab and RMS. Better RMS terminal handling has been
added. On the x86_64 architecture, there is some reduced stability, due to
a kernel stack overflow due to stack growth; clustering and swap files are
disabled. You can now use dir on ext2. Writing to ext2 is not finished,
and should not be used.

Fri, May 5th 2006 10:26
Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: Java Parallel Processing Framework is a set of tools and APIs to
facilitate the parallelization of CPU intensive applications, and
distribute their execution over a network of heterogenous nodes. It is
intended to run in clusters and grids. It features platform independence
thanks to Java 1.5, does not require you to deploy your application
classes to a server, scales up to thousands of nodes, has a built-in
fail-over mechanism on all the framework's components, and has a
monitoring and administration GUI tool to enable remote monitoring of the
server health and server shutdown/restart operations.
Changes: An algorithm based on the Monte Carlo algorithm was implemented,
to automatically optimize the size of the tasks bundles. The security
policy for the nodes can now be automatically uploaded from the server,
making its deployment effortless. The layout of the screensaver-based
nodes has been improved, and an animation was added to it (flying JPPF

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: KatchTV is an "Internet TV" application for KDE. It makes it easy
to subscribe to "TV" channels from all over the Internet in the form of
podcasts, so that you can browse channels, download shows, and watch them,
all from one convenient interface. It is very similar to Democracy TV, but
focuses on KDE integration, using KHTMLPart and embedded players such as
kaffeine. It's much faster and lighter on resources if you run a KDE
desktop without GTK apps. Installation is easy as long as your
distribution has PyKDE and PyQt.
Changes: This release adds a much nicer, friendlier user interface. It
notifies the user when a new version is available. It handles downloads of
unenclosed media items (or items from feeds to which you haven't
subscribed) just as well as subscribed feeds. If you later subscribe to a
feed, any items that you previously downloaded manually will take their
place in the feed. Version numbers are now easy to see. The "Ready to
Watch" page now shows file sizes, to help users manage their disk space.
This release saves subscribed channels and downloads in separate data

and robustness to network partitions, and reduce network congestion by
localizing access traffic. To ensure data protection, redundancy and
cryptographic techniques are used.
Changes: Recent crashes on startup due to invalid data in the data store
have been fixed. A new CORBA interface has been added to manipulate
objects by client application (and a corresponding command line tool).
This release introduces a new pro-active replication system and the

Fri, May 5th 2006 10:34
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Message Boards
About: The Sethi Family Guestbook is a multi-format guestbook script
written in PHP. It features page spanning, (optional) private comments,
user-selection of number of entries per page to display, multiple
guestbook formats (elegant, simple, or standard), and background color. No
database is required.
Changes: Now supports image verification using random text as part of a
CAPTCHA system. It incorporates elements designed to foil bots by
confusing OCR software, and also uses strong PHP session security in order
to disallow them getting around it (e.g., preventing brute force attacks,
slip-through attempts, etc.). It also disallows blank sessionIDs (a great
anti-spam technique for guestbooks, etc. to use against spambots that
exploit PHP's vulnerability to fake requests with blank sessionIDs). It
supports multiple formats, mangled email display, and a fully customizable
interface.

[064] - Simple persistence for Java 1.3.0
by Robert (http://freshmeat.net/users/demonofthesystem/)
Fri, May 5th 2006 15:50
Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Simple persistence for Java is an object/relation mapping framework
for Java. It is designed to be easy to use. There are no XML files to
write, no tables to create, no IDs to generate, and no primary keys to
fiddle with; just point it to the database, check the API documentation
for three basic methods, and code away. It supports transactions, has its
own simple query language (very similar to SQL), and can handle object
references, lists, and maps.
Changes: Full, automatic polymorphism support was added. All store
operations and the query language itself are now aware of class
inheritance, and handle it accordingly. Selecting for a superclass, for
example, will return objects of various matching subclasses, if present.
The library continues to require no configuration.

baseline to support several local configurations or multiple servers with
a single set of scripts.
Changes: This is a maintenance release, for use with Slackware versions
8.0 through 10.2. It fixes a major bug in rc.inet1 that affected
ethernet-up when using a broadband DHCP connection. Other minor bugs were
fixed, including the correct reporting of status on start/stop of NFS/SMB
servers. The installation script and the configuration documentation were
upgraded.

[080] - UFRaw 0.8
by Udi Fuchs (http://freshmeat.net/users/udifuchs/)
Fri, May 5th 2006 00:30
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
About: UFRaw is a utility for converting and manipulating raw images from
digital cameras. It can be used as a stand-alone tool or as a Gimp plugin,
and images can be batch processed using the commandline interface. UFRaw
reads most existing raw formats using Dave Coffin's raw conversion utility
DCRaw, and it supports basic color management using Little CMS, allowing
the user to apply color profiles. For Nikon users, UFRaw has the advantage
that it can read the camera's tone curves. Even if you don't own a Nikon,
you can still apply a Nikon curve to your images.
Changes: This version includes initial zoom support. The zoom is limited
to 50% and there is no scrolling yet. Auto balance, auto exposure, auto
black, and auto curve were updated. The auto exposure should be more
accurate, and the rest should simply work faster. New cameras supported in
this version are Canon D30, Leaf Aptus 22/65/75, Leaf Valeo 6/17, Leica
D-Lux 2, and Olympus E-330.
