[001] - AKFQuiz 4.3.0
by Andreas K. Foerster (http://freshmeat.net/users/AKFoerster/)
Sun, May 28th 2006 09:13
Education
About: The AKFQuiz package lets you easily make your own quiz games or
learning exercises. These can be used either with grquiz in a graphical
environment (SDL), with crtquiz on a text terminal, or with diaquiz in a
GUI environment. There is also a line oriented variant, linequiz, which
can be used as a backend. A CGI-variant can be installed on a Web server
to offer exercises via the Web. A mkquiz tool that generates an HTML file
for to use with the JavaScript akfquiz5.js is also included. Those can
then be published with any Web-space provider.
Changes: There are some bugfixes and improvements in grquiz: you can
toggle between window and full screen mode while grquiz is running, it has
some sound support, and it registers a runtime icon. The internal file
choosers of grquiz and scrquiz were improved, and the elapsed time is
shown at the end of a quiz. The charset converters have been improved a
little.

Communications :: File Sharing
About: aMule is short for "all-platform eMule-like file-sharing program",
or, in short, "all-platform Mule". It's a port of the well-known eMule P2P
client for the eDonkey2000 and Kad file sharing networks, supporting most
of eMule's features. Additionally, it provides a small separate Web server
and command line interface to connect to a running aMule via the network.
Changes: This release focuses on bugfixes and memory leak fixes, and some
minor features and compilation fixes. Upgrading ASAP is recommended.

System :: Diagnostics
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: Bartlby is a network and system monitor, completely written in C,
to provide a scalable framework with the ability to monitor networks of
various sizes. It consists of a core daemon, several plugins, and a Web
GUI (PHP extension). The core daemon checks (over active/passive TCP)
services/hosts and notifies users in case of critical service conditions
(mail, SMS, ICQ, and custom triggers are supported). Bartlby provides an
open plugin interface to give every administrator an easy to use option to
extend the plugin base, and a fully customizable GUI (written in PHP using
a C extension). Nearby everything can be controlled via an XML interface.
Changes: This release features experimental NRPE (SSL and noSSL) support.
Built-in SNMP support is implemented.

Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: Beautiful Soup is a self-contained parser that makes
screen-scraping easy. It parses both good and bad HTML and XML and offers
methods for traversing the parse tree and extracting specific parts of a
document.
Changes: Beautiful Soup now autodetects document encodings and converts
them to Unicode. Methods have been added for manipulating the parse tree.
You can now parse only part of a document, saving time. The API has been
cleaned.

[007] - Blob Wars : Blob and Conquer 0.2
by Scarfy (http://freshmeat.net/users/Scarfy/)
Sun, May 28th 2006 04:58
Games/Entertainment :: Arcade
About: Blob Wars : Blob and Conquer is a 3rd person action shooter. With
the apparent defeat of Galdov and the reclaiming of the Fire, Time, Space,
and Reality Crystals, the Blobs' battle was only just beginning. Bob had
rescued many Blobs and fought many battles, but now he had an ever bigger
task ahead of him. The Blobs' homeworld is still littered with the alien
forces and Bob once again makes it his task to lead the counter attack.
But even without Galdov the aliens are still extremely well organised.
Changes: The game now has nine playable missions. On screen targeting is
easier to follow. Oxygen is limited while swimming in water. A few new
enemies and weapons were added. Shadows have been added to most objects.
Lighting has been added to structures such as doors and lifts.

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Real Time Strategy
About: Boson is a real-time strategy game, like Command & Conquer(tm) or
StarCraft(tm). It uses the QT Toolkit and the KDE libraries. A minimum of
two players is required, since there is no artifical intelligence yet.
Boson is still in late development and not yet playable.
Changes: Units and terrain can now cast and receive shadows. A completely
new, much more realistic radar system has been implemented that allows for
several independent radar stations. Units can make use of ammunition now.
Most units have an infinite amount of ammunition, but the feature is
there. Power plant units (which have been in Boson for a very long time)
now actually generate power.

Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Botan is a C++ library of cryptographic algorithms. It includes a
wide selection of cryptographic algorithms (including AES, DES, SHA-1,
RSA, and DSA, among many others). It also support X.509 certificates and
several common certificate-related formats and protocols. It has a high
level interface, is easily portable to most systems and compilers, and
includes a substantial tutorial and API reference.
Changes: The BER/DER encoder API was substantially redesigned, allowing
for a series of cleanups throughout the library. The x86 assembly module
for Windows was dropped due to bugs. The Qt mutex module was updated to
use the new factory abstraction.

[011] - ClimbLog 3.0
by ssaring (http://freshmeat.net/users/ssaring/)
Sun, May 28th 2006 23:44
Database
Utilities
About: ClimbLog is a Java application for writing down climbing routes in
something like a diary. The entries are stored hierarchically, so it's
easy to navigate and search through the tree. You can add comments for
each entry or tally routes. The data is stored in XML format and can be
exported to HTML.
Changes: The biggest change is the new application name, changed from
jClimber's Diary to ClimbLog. Each route now contains multiple (at least
one) route climbs, so you can store multiple climbs of routes. All dialogs
have been rewritten with improved layout and they are now resizable.
ClimbLog now uses the native Look&Feel on Windows systems. The data is
stored in a new XML format, and the old data will be imported
automatically.

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: Contact Form is a Perl script that allows users to send you email
through a Web interface. It is designed to thwart spammers by not
allowing email to be sent to unknown addresses, or revealing the
addresses that it knows. In addition to this, it does not contain cross
site scripting vulnerabilities or allow arbitrary code to be run on the
host. It provides adequate information in the headers it sends to trace
spammers, can check the validity of all data before sending emails, and
features a customizable interface that allows for arbitrary fields.
Changes: Disallowed text may now be specified. To prevent the most common
form of contact form spam, HTML and message board formatted links are now
disallowed by default.

Changes: This release features new command line options, including
--build-number, --build-tag, and --upgrade-all. --install and --recursive
are now on by default, with options to disable them. Architecture
detection was fixed. A bug with newer versions of CPAN.pm returning undef

Sun, May 28th 2006 00:44
Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Multi-User Dungeons (MUD)
Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
About: Crossfire+ is a friendly fork of the crossfire multi-user RPG game.
Unlike the original project, it focuses mainly on stability and
playability, while also adding more maps and better scriptability and
graphics.
Changes: Server shutdown now cleanly saves all players and maps, even on
"unholy ground", so items no longer get lost by clean shutdowns. Swarm
spells (meteor swarm, bullet swarm) once again work on every type of
floor. "Earth to dust" now correctly removes all destructible walls. The
server now tries to pack as many commands into a single TCP segment as
possible, which both reduces latency and cuts the number of packets sent
by half, making gameplay much smoother and reducing lag. The banking
system was rewritten and is more flexible. For example, it now accepts
smaller coinage.

Software Development :: Bug Tracking
Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Quality Assurance
About: cspot is a semantic annotator designed only for the C programming
language. It is quite similar to cscope, but some more functionality. It
can be used to find the declarations, definitions, and usages of
functions, variables, macros, typedefs, and structs. It can also find
visible identifiers at some position in the source, functions called by a
function, global variables used by a function, usages of local variable
declarations, unused global variables, unused function definitions, and
more. Because it uses sparse, cspot knows more about semantics than
cscope.
Changes: Updating was improved. Variables can now be sought inside a
struct. Bugs were fixed.

Sun, May 28th 2006 00:10
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: Decimail Webmail 3 is an email application written in Javascript.
It is almost entirely client-side, and so has the potential for a rich and
responsive user-interface. The server-side requirement is a Web server, a
simple IMAP-to-HTTP proxy, and any IMAP server; this should result in
lower server load than some CGI Webmail applications. The code is
currently very new and only suitable for experimental use; contributions
and suggestions are welcome.
Changes: Although not yet ready for serious use, in this second Alpha
release, you can see how the AJAX IMAP-over-HTTP user interface looks and
get a feel for how it performs. IMAP sessions are now timed out by the
proxy when unused.

by Aleksey Cheusov (http://freshmeat.net/users/vle/)
Sun, May 28th 2006 04:53
About: DictEm is an extremely customizable DICT client for (X)Emacs. It
implements all functions of the client part of the DICT protocol
(RFC-2229). Unlike dictionary.el, it widely uses autocompletion that is
used for selecting a dictionary and search strategy. It provides several
hooks that may be used for buffer postprocessing. Built-in hyperlinking
and a highlighting mechanism are based on this ability. It supports the
mechanism of virtual dictionaries that can be used for grouping
dictionaries from different DICT servers into the client-side virtual
dictionary.
Changes: The "./configure; make; make install" build system was removed.
The dictem-exclude-databases variable was added to disable some databases
from the autocompletion menu; see example 15 in the README file. Error
messages obtained from the "dict" command are printed in case
initialization fails.

Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: Octod is a "download manager daemon", i.e. a daemon that listens at
the network interface for incoming download jobs and performs them
(simultaneously) in the background. It is intended to run on desktop
systems as a reliable and fast download manager without the overhead of a
graphical user interface, but it can also be used as a centralized
download station running in network environments with multiple users. To
control the daemon, an easy and self-explanatory network protocol has been
defined, so cross-platform, cross-language graphical clients (based on
ncurses, Qt, Gtk, or even HTML/PHP) can be implemented.
Changes: The VERSION, UPDATE, and RESTART commands have been implemented,
so the daemon now supports all the commands from the network protocol. Due
to the updated networking stack, it is able to serve multiple clients at
the same time. Additionally, lots of bugs and issues have been dealt with
and the code has been cleaned up.

About: Tablix is a powerful free software kernel for solving general
timetabling problems. It uses a coarse-grained parallel genetic algorithm
in combination with other techniques to construct sensible timetables from
XML formatted problem descriptions. Tablix can run on a single host as well
as on a heterogeneous parallel virtual machine using PVM3. The default
installation will export finished timetables into XHTML 1.1 format ready
for publishing on the Internet, or into a "comma separated values" format
(CSV) that is suitable for import into a spreadsheet application and
further processing. The kernel supports a very wide range of timetabling
problems, from high school timetabling to barge scheduling. Several
timetable constraints are already implemented in the default installation.
Because of the kernel's modular design, it is easy to add custom timetable
constraints and/or modify existing ones.
Changes: Two header files that were missing from the previous release were
added to the distribution. A bug in the DTD file for the XML format of the
fitness modules reference documentation has been fixed.

[104] - Twisted 2.4.0
by Jean-Paul Calderone (http://freshmeat.net/users/kuran/)
Sun, May 28th 2006 00:09
Communications :: Chat
Communications :: Email
Games/Entertainment :: Multi-User Dungeons (MUD)
About: Twisted is an event-based framework for Internet applications. It
includes a Web server, an SMTP/POP3 server, a telnet server, an SSH
server, an IRC server, a DNS server, a generic client/server pair for
remote object access (Perspective Broker), and APIs for creating new
protocols. It supports integration with GTK+, GTK+ 2, Qt, Tkinter,
wxPython, Mac OS X (PyObjC) and Win32 event loops. It also supports TCP,
SSL and TLS, UDP, Unix sockets, multicast, and serial ports. Supported
protocols include HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, TOC, OSCAR (AIM and ICQ),
SSH, DNS, IRC, NNTP, Jabber, SOCKSv4, Telnet, SIP (for VoIP), and XML-RPC
and SOAP using external packages. Most protocols are supported as both
servers and clients.
Changes: This release includes many fixes for UDP and multicast stdio on
Win32. Many bug fixes were made for Trial, and its support for a large
number of previously deprecated APIs was dropped. Deferred Generators no
longer leak their final result or exception. LoopingCall now supports
functions which return Deferreds. A cooperative scheduler with pluggable
policies has been added. Much of the API documentation has been improved
and a new guide for developing producers and consumers has been added.
This also includes new releases of Conch, Mail, Names, Words, and Web.

About: Conch is an SSHv2, Telnet, and VT102 implementation. It interfaces
well with other Python projects such as Imagination, and includes an
experimental console windowing library (Insults) and support for
rudimentary line editing behaviors. A new implementation of Twisted's
Manhole application is also included, featuring server-side input history
and interactive syntax coloring.
Changes: The in-memory terminal emulator's "expect" functionality now
supports timeouts. The SSH server and client are now approximately five
times faster for bulk-data transfers.

[106] - Twisted Mail 0.3.0
by Jean-Paul Calderone (http://freshmeat.net/users/kuran/)
Sun, May 28th 2006 00:03
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
About: Twisted Mail provides client and server implementations of SMTP,
POP3, and IMAP4. These differentiate themselves from the Python standard
library implementations both by presenting a much higher-level,
easy-to-use interface and in their server components, which allow the
implementation of custom servers for each protocol without dealing with
protocol-level issues. Twisted Mail includes a simple demonstration email
server which accepts messages over SMTP, stores them in a Maildir
arrangement, and can serve them to clients over POP3.
Changes: The IMAP4 client now properly quotes usernames and passwords when
necessary. It also handles unsolicited FLAGS responses. The IMAP4 server
can now parse multiple literals in a single command and to FETCH requests
with multiple BODY parts. A bug where Deferreds returned from IMAP4 client
methods would not receive connection lost notification has been fixed.
Startup time on OS X has been improved. The SMTP server has been sped up.
The POP3 mailbox API has been expanded to allow Deferreds to be returned
in some cases.

[107] - Twisted Web 0.6.0
by Jean-Paul Calderone (http://freshmeat.net/users/kuran/)
Sun, May 28th 2006 04:00
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
About: Twisted Web includes an HTTP/1.0 protocol implementation for both
servers and clients. It also includes a resource framework for
implementing rich, dynamic web applications. It includes support for
authentication either via HTTP AUTH, session URLs, or session cookies. It
supports CGIs and a custom PB-based distribution mechanism for serving
content from separate, persistent processes. It includes SOAP and XML-RPC
support for both clients and servers. It also makes it particularly easy
to deploy new servers with novel or ephemeral use-cases, often with only a
single short command.
Changes: This release adds HTTP Basic auth support for XML-RPC clients,
and fixes several date, time, and If-Modified-Since header parsing
corner-cases. Various performance improvements have been made, and support
for CGIs broken in a few specific ways has been improved.

[109] - wxRemind 0.6.6
by Dan Graham (http://freshmeat.net/users/dgraham/)
Sun, May 28th 2006 16:06
Information Management
Office/Business :: Scheduling
About: wxRemind is a wxPython-based front-end for Remind, a powerful
calendar and alarm application. Similar to the curses-based Wyrd, the
display features a calendar and daily event list suitable for visualizing
your schedule at a glance. Dates and associated events can be quickly
selected either with the mouse or cursor keys, and dates in the calendar
are color coded to reflect the total duration of scheduled events.
wxRemind provides an internal editor or integrates with an external editor
of your choice to make editing of reminder files more efficient, provides
hotkeys to quickly access the most common Remind options, and allows
popup, sound, and/or spoken alarms.
Changes: This release adds path setting and a configuration check for
festival speech synthesis. There are minor cosmetic changes to the analog
clock. Fill color for hands and tick marks is now set by the colorfamily
setting. Tick marks have been changed to circles, and a black border color
has been added to hands and tick marks.
