Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share
Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or HP
value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe it's
the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

[001] - ++Skype library 1.0
by Vitaly A. Repin (http://freshmeat.net/users/vitrepin/)
Wed, Jun 28th 2006 07:19
Communications :: Chat
Communications :: Conferencing
Communications :: Internet Phone
About: ++Skype is a C++ library for skype add-on platform independent
software development. It is platform independent, easy to use, and easy to
extend because of the flexible library design, inspired by modern C++
design ideas. Performance is one of the goals: only compile-time
polymorphism is used.
Changes: Search commands are supported. Application to application
communication is supported. New Skype objects are supported: User and
UserManager, Chat and ChatManager, and AudioSettings. Microsoft Visual
Studio 2005 (MS VC++ 8.0) is supported. Other supported build environments
are mingw and Linux gcc. The latest versions of Loki (0.1.5) and Boost
(1.33.1) are supported. A set of ++Skype usage examples is included in the
distribution. And last but not least, a ++Skype tutorial was released.

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering
About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: Parametric surfaces were implemented, and parametric graphs now
respect picture scaling. Fill and FillDraw now work for markers and
superpaths. A bug in reading strings from files was fixed. Support for
MikTeX 2.5 and Autoconf versions later than 2.59 was added. Asymptote and
output filenames can now contain spaces. Interrupts are working again. A
line-based debugger was implemented.

[005] - BasKet 0.6.0 Beta 1 (Development)
by Sebien (http://freshmeat.net/users/Sebien/)
Wed, Jun 28th 2006 07:59
About: BasKet is a desktop organization tool inspired by DropDrawers (from
www.sigsoftware.com). It uses baskets and drawers for organizing various
objects, such as text, URLs, images, sounds, or other documents. Objects
in a basket can be edited, copied, moved, dragged, and so on. This allows
you to stay organized and free your desktop, or to take notes with various
types of content (not only text) in an easy way.
Changes: All features of 0.5.0 are back. Important changes in the
application behavior were introduced, like the rich text notes by default.
A lot of bugs, crashes, and usability glitches have been solved. Those
fixes include a serious bug which occurred when no disk space was left,
and the data were corrupted. New features were added, such as
password-protected baskets and KnowIt and TuxCards importers.

Software Development :: Testing
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Instant-Grid is a Knoppix-based live-CD bundled with a
pre-configured grid environment based on the Globus Toolkit. One PC
started from this CD becomes the Instant-Grid frontend. It also functions
as a PXE boot-server, allowing other PCs in the same local network to boot
the Instant-Grid environment. Together with the frontend, these PCs
automatically form a working test grid. Like with the original Knoppix,
the existing configuration of the participating PC is not touched (except
maybe for enabling the PXE boot-option), and remains instantly available
by a simple reboot.
Changes: One of the new features is an easy to use Web application for the
creation of new users. Almost the entire grid software contained in
Instant-Grid was updated with the most recent versions. Firewall
protection against unsolicited access was added. Usage of Instant-Grid on

[028] - MirBSD #9
by Benny Siegert (http://freshmeat.net/users/benz8574/)
Wed, Jun 28th 2006 07:18
System :: Operating System
System :: Operating System Kernels :: BSD
About: MirBSD originated as a patch set against OpenBSD-current, an ultra
secure operating system and NetBSD derivate, and has since also
incorporated changes from NetBSD, a 4.4BSD-derived ultra portable
operating system. It features bugfixes, code removal for the sake of
simplicity, and feature enhancements over stock OpenBSD as well as a much
more up-to-date GNU toolchain, careful integration of patches from other
projects (such as KAME), and many improvements. It works on the Intel
Pentium and some 80486 machines with more than 32 MiB RAM and the SPARC,
and a port to the PowerPC Macintosh is in preparation.
Changes: In comparison to the last stable release, MirOS #9 adds support
for internationalisation, UTF-8, and iconv. An important bug in the
dynamic linker was fixed, and a live CD was added. mksh, cpio, lynx, the
fxp(4) driver, and other parts of the system were updated.

[029] - Nmap Security Scanner 4.11 (Stable)
by Fyodor (http://freshmeat.net/users/fyodor/)
Wed, Jun 28th 2006 14:01
Security
System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: Nmap ("Network Mapper") is a utility for network exploration,
administration, and security auditing. It uses IP packets in novel ways to
determine which hosts are available online (host discovery), which TCP/UDP
ports are open (port scanning), and what applications and services are
listening on each port (version detection). It can also identify remote
host OS and device types via TCP/IP fingerprinting. Nmap offers flexible
target and port specifications, decoy/stealth scanning for firewall and
IDS evasion, and highly optimized timing algorithms for fast scanning.
Changes: This release includes dozens of more detailed SSH version
detection signatures. It also detects the Nessus daemon. Several bugs were
fixed, including Solaris and HP-UX compilation problems.

[031] - NoMachine NX 2.0.0-37 (Server Manager)
by NXAdmin (http://freshmeat.net/users/NXAdmin/)
Wed, Jun 28th 2006 06:12
Communications
Desktop Environment
Software Development
About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server system based on the X11
protocol. In addition, NX also translates and embeds the MS Windows
Terminal Server and VNC protocols into X/NX. NX is an order of magnitude
faster than VNC or X11 and can run on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec.
By embedding RDP and RFB, it enables users to compress and accelerate
remote Windows and VNC sessions. NX lets you work fluently even across
slow links like modems. The NX project provides a suite of libraries and
X11 proxying agents implementing efficient compression and optimized
transport of X11, SMB, IPP, HTTP, and arbitrary protocols like audio over
the Internet.
Changes: The 2.0.0 release, which is compatible with NX Server 1.5.0,
provides an easier way to install and set-up configuration, as well as
multi-server management and three user levels (guest, manager, and
administrator). There is also better management of the server
configuration with the option to restore all the default settings and the
possibility to start an NX session (console) on the server directly via
the Web.

[032] - Open RObot COntrol Software 0.24.0
by Peter Soetens (http://freshmeat.net/users/kaltan/)
Wed, Jun 28th 2006 06:11
Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: The Open RObot COntrol Software (Orocos) framework applies
software patterns in C++ to achieve real-time execution of software
components and provides an infrastructure to quickly integrate them in a
real-time operating system such as RTAI or RTLinux, although it can be
tested on normal Linux systems. It is designed to appeal to roboticists.
See the Orocos project homepage for an automated download script.
Changes: This major feature release adds component network distribution,
using TAO, but no CORBA knowledge is required. Furthermore, any external
library (or user program) can extend Orocos with its own data types
(structs) for use in capturing, real-time scripting, XML serialization,
and network transport. Finally, this release supports a new component
model, for which components are developed in a separate software project.

[034] - PHP MIME Mail decoder class 2006.06.27
by Manuel Lemos (http://freshmeat.net/users/mlemos/)
Wed, Jun 28th 2006 06:28
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: PHP MIME Mail decoder class is a PHP class to parse and decode MIME
email messages. It supports decoding single RFC 2822 MIME messages or
archives that aggregate multiple messages in the mbox format. It can
decode messages read from files or data strings. The bodies of multipart
messages can be decoded into distinct sub-messages. Optionally, the
message body data can be saved to separate files, so the class can handle
messages larger than the available memory.
Changes: The decoding function now also returns decoded versions of the
message headers with non-ASCII and other special characters. The length of
each body part is always returned even when the body part contents are not
returned nor saved to a file. The bugs of not incrementing body part
numbers to be saved to file and attempting to save empty body parts data
chunks were fixed.

[037] - Plan 9 20060628
by ems (http://freshmeat.net/users/ems9/)
Wed, Jun 28th 2006 07:47
System :: Operating System
About: Plan 9 was born in the same lab where Unix began. Underneath,
though, lies a new kind of system, organized around communication and
naming rather than files and processes. In Plan 9, distributed computing
is a central premise, not an evolutionary add-on. The system relies on a
uniform protocol to refer to and communicate with objects, whether they be
data or processes, and whether or not they live on the same machine or even
similar machines. A single paradigm (writing to named places) unifies all
kinds of control and interprocess signaling.
Changes: Major changes were made to /sys/src/fs, removing some dead code.
Some major bugs were fixed. New features were added and the memory limit
was increased. See also http://9fans.net/archive/2006/06/471.

[038] - POMStrap 1.0.3
by Alag (http://freshmeat.net/users/Alag/)
Wed, Jun 28th 2006 14:06
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: POMStrap is a really simple Java application bootstrap and
classloader trick that allows dependency "classloading" without side
effect. POMStrap uses Maven2 pom files to resolve dependencies required to
launch an application. For example, if your application depends on A-1.0
(and can only work with this version) and B-1.0; and if B-1.0 also depends
on A-2.0, then B-1.0's dependency won't normally be able to be satisfied
without violating another one of your application's dependencies. POMStrap
avoids this kind of dependency conflict.
Changes: This version implements a dependency grouping feature:
dependencies of same maven group ID are grouped in the same bag to be
managed by a common class loader. This reduces the problems with protected
methods accessed by classes within the same package in different jar files.

About: ZK is a Web framework designed to enable Web applications to have
both rich user experiences and a simple programming model. ZK includes an
AJAX-based event-driven engine to automate interactivity, a rich set of
XUL and XHTML components to enrich usability, and a markup language to
design user interfaces without programming.
Changes: This release is mainly for bugfixes. In addition, it supports
cloneable components. Now you can detach components from one desktop in an
event listener and attach them to another desktop in another event
listener.
