[001] - abcm2ps 4.12.24 (Stable)
  by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
  Fri, Aug 4th 2006 07:15

Printing

About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.

Changes: This release fixes minor problems with ties.

Software Development :: Internationalization
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Localization

About: The Adobe Source Libraries (ASL) are a collection of C++ libraries
building foundation technology to allow the construction of commercial
applications by assembling generic algorithms through declarative
descriptions.

Changes: Highlights of this release include major refinements of
individual module APIs to better reflect a Model/View/Controller system.
Additional small behaviors were added to several widgets (transparent
scrubby sliders and value incrementing). adobe::debounce_t was extracted
to a general standalone utility. adobe/future/carbon was created, which is
a directory with some utilities that came out of the widgets work that
might be useful elsewhere. Many other bugfixes and updates were made.

About: Ant-Eclipse is a task for the Java build tool Ant, generating
Eclipse projects to be imported and used easily. Ant build scripts are
used as a central place for the configuration of sources and libraries on
which the generated projects are based.

Changes: The tool has been used for over a year, and is considered a

  by Jez (http://freshmeat.net/users/jez/)
  Fri, Aug 4th 2006 10:22

Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: Arabica is a C++ XML parser toolkit that has a full SAX2
implementation (the Simple API for XML), including the optional interfaces
and helper classes. It also implements the W3C DOM (Document Object Model)
Level 2.0 Core, together with XPath 1.0. It delivers UTF-8 encoded
std::strings or UCS-2 std::wstrings, but can also accommodate custom
string types and alternative encodings. It provides uniform SAX2 wrappers
for the expat parser, Xerces, libxml, and the Microsoft XML parser COM
component.

Changes: This release extends the XPath engine to support arbitrary
strings types. It now runs std::string and std::wstring out of the box. A
new dual DOM/Streaming parser has been added. By registering a callback
function, partially built DOM trees can be processed, modified,
manipulated, or even discarded before proceeding to build more of the
tree. The test suite has been extended to include std::string,
std::wstring, and a custom string type. The release also includes assorted
minor bugfixes.

[006] - Armagetron Advanced 0.2.8.2.1 (Stable)
  by z-man (http://freshmeat.net/users/zmanuel/)
  Fri, Aug 4th 2006 18:21

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: In Armagetron, you ride a lightcycle around the game grid. You can
only make sharp turns of 90 degrees and a wall constantly builds up after
you. Make your enemies crash into your wall, but be aware that they are
trying to do the same to you. If you are fast enough, you may be able to
trap them, but the only way to speed up your lightcycle is to drive close
to the dangerous walls. Prepare for exciting strategic preparations
followed by action-packed close combat!

Changes: Three denial of service attacks (or accidents) have been fixed.
Forged clients could crash or freeze a server by sending wrong data that
was left unchecked, and a clumsy remote administrator could freeze the
server by entering commands that produce too much output. 0.2.8.2.1 fixes
all of that.

About: The aim of auch is to visualize harmonics in musical recordings and
the effect of analog/digital filters on the spectrum. There are plenty of
tools that visualize the spectrum. The difference here is that one or two
octaves can be focused on, so that notes, chords, and harmonics become
clear. Another feature is that this tool is aimed comparing audio out (eg.
a .wav file) with audio in. This way, external filters added between the
audio output and input of your sound card can be studied.

  Fri, Aug 4th 2006 10:16

Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Boot :: Init

About: BusyBox combines tiny versions of many common UNIX utilities into a
single small executable. It provides minimalist replacements for most of
the utilities you usually find in GNU fileutils, shellutils, etc. The
utilities in BusyBox generally have fewer options than their full-featured
GNU cousins; however, the options that are included provide the expected
functionality and behave very much like their GNU counterparts. BusyBox
provides a fairly complete POSIX environment for any small or embedded
system.

Changes: This release features a few fixes to lash, ash, tar, dmesg,
passwd, adduser, and modprobe, as well as build tweaks.

  Fri, Aug 4th 2006 23:57

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwknop implements an authorization scheme that requires only a
single encrypted packet to communicate various pieces of information,
including desired access through a Netfilter policy and/or specific
commands to execute on the target system. The main application of this
program is to protect services such as SSH with an additional layer of
security in order to make the exploitation of vulnerabilities much more
difficult. The authorization server works by passively monitoring
authorization packets via libpcap.

Changes: fwknop_serv was added to function as a minimal TCP server over
which SPA packets can be sent. This allows SPA to be compatible with the
Tor network. Crypt::CBC was updated 2.18 after a vulnerability that caused
weak ciphertext to be generated for algorithms that have block sizes
greater than 8 bytes was discovered. The -w IP lookup functionality was
restored after a format change on data returned by whatismyip.com. A
"--L-host" command line argument was added so that the arguments used for
multiple hosts are preserved and can be recalled.

  Fri, Aug 4th 2006 07:12

Security
Utilities

About: integrit is an alternative to file integrity verification programs
like tripwire and aide. It helps you determine whether an intruder has
modified a computer system. integrit's major advantages are a small memory
footprint and simplicity. It works by creating a database that is a
snapshot of the most essential parts of your computer system. You put the
database somewhere safe, and you can then use it to make sure that no one
has made any illicit modifications to the computer system. In the case of
a break in, you know exactly which files have been modified, added, or
removed.

Changes: RipeMD160 is now used for both current-state reports and file
checksums, instead of MD5 and SHA1 (respectively). This release introduces
support for delayed failures.

About: Jxp is a script processor/template-engine that can execute
template files containing text and Java code. It contains a parser to
parse the script file into an abstract syntax tree and a tree processor
that processes the syntax tree to execute the code using the reflection

Changes: This release fixes a small dependency problem. A syntax was added
for specifying text which should not be parsed. The plus operator for
strings was fixed. A default package was added in class lookup. Method
lookup was improved in ReflectUtils (common-java) using a best match
strategy (scoring) instead of first match. The ability to lookup a class

[026] - JSAP 2.1
  by Marty Lamb (http://freshmeat.net/users/mlamb/)
  Fri, Aug 4th 2006 10:37

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: JSAP (Java Simple Argument Parser) not only syntactically validates
your program's commandline arguments, but it converts those arguments into
objects you specify. There's a pretty big (and growing) list of return
types suppored by JSAP, including Integers, Floats, Dates, URLs, and even
java.awt.Colors; you can also add your own in a matter of minutes.
Cascading configuration files can provide arguments not supplied at the
command line, and a custom ANT task is included to generate a JSAP class
based on your commandline configuration.

Changes: This is a long overdue bugfix release. The JRE 1.5 dependency has
been removed (it works with 1.4 again). "-" and "--" can be supplied as
unflagged option values. "-v=value" syntax parsing has been fixed. A
QualifiedSwitch bug that resulted in an exception when no value was
specified is fixed. getUsageName() is fixed for FlaggedOptions.
unregisterParameter() now works for switches.

[029] - Lucene Image REtrieval 0.5
  by Mathias (http://freshmeat.net/users/motte/)
  Fri, Aug 4th 2006 10:20

Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering :: Image Recognition
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: The LIRE (Lucene Image REtrieval) library provides a simple way to
create a Lucene index of image features for content-based image retrieval
(CBIR), which allows searching for similar images. The used features are
taken from the MPEG-7 standard: ScalableColor, ColorLayout, and
EdgeHistogram. Furthermore, methods for searching the index are provided.

Changes: This release includes one major bugfix as well as a new feature.
It can easily be used to identify duplicate images within an index. The
bug was responsible for missing results in the result list in the special
case of equal distance to the query image. The Lucene library has been
updated to 2.0.0.

Education
Games/Entertainment :: Simulation
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering

About: Mars MOLA Viewer displays a fly-over rendering of the Martian
surface, as measured by the Mars Global Surveyor, in real-time 3D
animation. It downloads the Mars Orbiting Laser Altimeter topographic data
files and uses them to drive the rendering. The user controls the position
and the angle of the camera, and can move seamlessly over the entire
Martian surface from -88 to 88 degrees latitude. It is a Java Web Start
program with 1-click installation from your browser (depending on
platform/browser).

Changes: Mars MOLA Viewer now incorporates a Mars clock so the real time
3D terrain renders show the sun and lighting appropriately for your
location, season, and time: you can watch the sun rise or set on Mars, and
see the sun shift with the changing seasons. See the landscape as it would
appear now, or at the date and time of your choice. A new bookmark feature
helps you remember points of interest and return for further exploration.
There's new support for Linux running native on AMD-64, as well as Linux

[064] - XML_PullParser 1.2.0
  by Myron Turner (http://freshmeat.net/users/turnermm03/)
  Fri, Aug 4th 2006 10:23

Text Processing :: Markup
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: XML_PullParser moves the API of the PHP XML facility from an
event-based model to a token-based model. Instead of processing data as it
is passed from the parser to callbacks, a script using PullParser requests
"tokens" from XML_PullParser_getToken() and a number of helper functions.
Tokens are arrays representing XML structures, which become available in
the order in which they appear in the document being parsed. Methods are
provided both to get tokens and to extract their data.

Changes: This release adds error reporting and tracing. Errors are handled
by a new class, XML_PullParser_Errors. User defined errors are also
supported; these are pushed onto the error stack and become part of any
trace. Error reporting is explained in the manual. There is also a bugfix
to XML_PullParser_setAttrLoop_elcd() and a new method,
XML_PullParser_tokenFromChildren(). This release is backwards compatible
with earlier versions, but requires PHP >= 4.3.

  Fri, Aug 4th 2006 09:50

Desktop Environment
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals

About: The xterm program is the standard terminal emulator for the X
Window System. It provides DEC VT102/VT220 and Tektronix 4014 compatible
terminals for programs that can't use the window system directly. If the
underlying operating system supports terminal resizing capabilities (for
example, the SIGWINCH signal in systems derived from 4.3bsd), xterm will
use the facilities to notify programs running in the window whenever it is
resized.

Changes: Many improvements and extensions for keyboard configuration.
Fixes for layout computation and setgid operation.
