Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share
leadership? Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

[001] - Access_user Class 1.92
by Olaf (http://freshmeat.net/users/olaf2/)
Fri, Oct 20th 2006 04:48
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: Access_user Class is an easy to use system for protecting pages and
registering users. The main features are user login, user registration,
page protection, forgotten password recovery, and email-based account
activation. The class is powered by MySQL and PHP sessions. Inside the
package are examples for all primary methods.
Changes: It's now possible to store the session data in your database.
This is much safer if you use sessions on a shared hosting server. The
password is always encoded with MD5 now. session_destroy() was added to
the logout method. The links used in the email messages are now double
MD5-encoded.

[002] - AgileWiki 3.5.0.10
by Bill la Forge (http://freshmeat.net/users/laforge49/)
Fri, Oct 20th 2006 21:52
Database
Documentation
Information Management
About: AgileWiki is a Java-based wiki that provides a virtual wiki for
each registered user, complete with access control, versioning,
hierarchical structures, namespace management, and semantic relations,
qualifiers, and inferencing. This is a rich system that is also easy for
casual users to browse or add content. Prototypes for this system also
included an email client and server-to-server content sharing.
Changes: The new uses command lists all the various uses of a Named Rolon.
The cit command now lists citations ordered by pathname. The qualifierFor
command is now scoped for SemanticRelationDu, not DU. The instances
command is now working for common DUs in the Ark's DescriptorUnits Drawer.
The required feature has changed for the qualifierFor, ruleReferences,
relations, instance, and includedBy commands. The cit, qualifierFor, and
ruleReferences commands are no longer applicable when there is nothing to
list.

[007] - AVL Array 1.0
by Martin Knoblauch Revuelta (http://freshmeat.net/users/comocomocomo/)
Fri, Oct 20th 2006 04:39
Software Development
Text Editors
About: AVL Array is an STL-like container for C++ that fills the gap
between vector (or deque) and list, providing both fast random access and
fast insertion/removal, all O(log n). This is not a map; in an avl_array,
the "keys" always range from 0 to size-1, and they automatically change on
insertion or removal. As a sequence container, like vector and list, it
respects the order of elements.

Fri, Oct 20th 2006 01:59
System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression
About: bdmn is client/server-oriented backup system. The daemon runs on
the machine being backed up, and the client runs on the machine that
stores the backup. It is very simple, but very fast. It only uses tar,
gzip, uuencode, and Perl, so it is portable to many operating systems. It
includes a very simple access control system for itself.
Changes: bdes encryption can be used on a bdmn stream. uuencode can be
used on a bdmn stream, which fixes some problems. check.pl was updated so
that "make install" creates bdmn.conf alone. Some bugs were fixed.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis
About: Breakage is a drum machine with unusual real time programming and
performance. Breakage uses neural networks and matrix operations for
composition above the note level, unlike traditional step sequencers which
edit one note at time.
Changes: This version has a major user interface redesign. You can now
change the neural net status (in, out, or bypass) per channel, making
Breakage much more flexible. Samples can now be loaded by drag n' dropping
from the browser onto the channels. More preferences are saved between
sessions. The pattern database can merge several pattern files together.
Breakage now generates an average pattern. One known bug: the average
pattern isn't always up to date.

Fri, Oct 20th 2006 01:54
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Ripping
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing
System :: Archiving
About: cdrtools (formerly cdrecord) creates home-burned CDs/DVDs with a
CDR/CDRW/DVD recorder. It works as a burn engine for several applications.
It supports CD/DVD recorders from many different vendors; all SCSI-3/mmc-
and ATAPI/mmc-compliant drives should also work. Supported features
include IDE/ATAPI, parallel port, and SCSI drives, audio CDs, data CDs,
and mixed CDs, full multi-session support, CDRWs (rewritable), DVD-R/-RW,
DVD+R/+RW, TAO, DAO, RAW, and human-readable error messages. cdrtools
includes remote SCSI support and can access local or remote CD/DVD
writers.
Changes: A bug (introduced with 2.01.01a17) that sometimes caused cdrecord
to abort on single layer DVD media was fixed. Mkisofs now implements the
rrip (Rock Ridge) v-1.12 protocol, which allows you to have correct inode
numbers and thus working hard links. The link count fields for directories
and hard linked files are now correct. Mkisofs now supports better and
faster hashing, and inode caching is now on by default for recent Cygwin
versions. The makefile system was enhanced.

[014] - check_logfiles 1.3.6.1
by lausser (http://freshmeat.net/users/lausser/)
Fri, Oct 20th 2006 14:18
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
About: check_logfiles is a plugin for Nagios which checks logfiles for
defined patterns. It is capable of detecting logfile rotation. If you tell
it how the rotated archives look, it will also examine these files. Unlike
check_logfiles, traditional logfile plugins were not aware of the gap
which could occur, so under some circumstances they ignored what had
happened between their checks. A configuration file is used to specify
where to search, what to search, and what to do if a matching line is
found.
Changes: This patch release fixes a bug where your protocol directory
could be filled over time with up to 2000 empty protocol files. At the
request of some users who implemented the syslogd checking, a new $delay
parameter was introduced.

[015] - Clorox 0.1
by Daniel Myers (http://freshmeat.net/users/dsmcsail/)
Fri, Oct 20th 2006 22:02
About: Clorox is shared memory system for AJAX Web applications. Instead
of forcing the programmer to manually make requests to the server for new
data, Clorox presents them with the illusion of data structures shared
between the client and server. These data structures look exactly like
ordinary JavaScript objects, and they support flexible, user-defined
policies for data caching and prefetching. It thus provides better
performance than straightforward AJAX implementations with reduced
programmer effort.

[016] - Common Text Transformation Library 207
by Igor Kholodov (http://freshmeat.net/users/cttl/)
Fri, Oct 20th 2006 01:29
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Common Text Transformation Library is a library of C++ classes and
functions to parse and modify STL strings. CTTL substring classes may be
compared, inserted, replaced, and parsed with EBNF grammars. The compiled
program implements a fast, thread-safe, re-entrant recursive descent
parser.
Changes: This release adds lambda expression support for CTTL grammars.
New expression functionality includes higher-order functions (functional
composition) and closures (delayed function calls). Sample code
demonstrates ways to generate abstract syntax trees with CTTL.

[017] - Common UNIX Printing System 1.2.5
by Michael Sweet (http://freshmeat.net/users/easysw/)
Fri, Oct 20th 2006 11:21
Internet
Printing
Software Development :: Libraries
About: CUPS provides a portable printing layer for Unix(r)-based operating
systems. It has been developed to promote a standard printing solution for
all Unix vendors and users. CUPS provides the System V and Berkeley
command line interfaces, and uses the Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP")
as the basis for managing print jobs and queues. The Line Printer Daemon
(LPD) Server Message Block (SMB), and AppSocket (a.k.a. JetDirect)
protocols are also supported with reduced functionality. CUPS adds network
printer browsing and PostScript Printer Description ("PPD") based printing
options to support real world printing under UNIX. It includes an image
file RIP that supports printing of image files to non-PostScript printers.
A customized version of GNU Ghostscript 7.05 for CUPS called ESP
Ghostscript is available separately to support printing of PostScript
files within the CUPS driver framework. Sample drivers for Dymo, EPSON,
HP, and OKIDATA printers are included that use these filters.
Changes: This release fixes minor printing, networking, and documentation
issues and adds support for older versions of DBUS and a translation for
Estonian.

About: Console Lines is a "Lines" game for the Unix terminal. It requires
a certain terminal size, supports a mouse (curses or GPM), and works with
various ncurses libraries.
Changes: Support for smaller terminals (as small as 19x19). Support for
terminal resize. Support for black and white terminals. Support for
command line options. A workaround for a nasty ALTLinux/Debian GPM bug.
Persistant high scores. A man page has been added.

[020] - cppmake 0.4
by icanoop (http://freshmeat.net/users/icanoop/)
Fri, Oct 20th 2006 11:24
Software Development
Utilities
About: Cppmake is a front-end to make that builds C++ programs with less
effort and more accuracy than writing makefiles manually. Building a C++
program with cppmake is similar to compiling a Java program. The idea is
that you specify a classpath and cppmake will automatically find all the
classes needed by your program. Once found, all of the classes are
compiled and linked into an executable or library. It's similar to
makedepend, but more powerful. The difference between cppmake and
makedepend is that cppmake infers source dependencies from the header
dependencies it discovers and recursively finds all the source
dependencies required to build. It then generates a complete makefile for
the build (without any editing on your part) and actually builds the
executable or library by invoking make.
Changes: This release has a built-in C preprocessor it uses to find source
dependencies. It no longer relies on GCC to find dependencies for a build.
This results in a huge performance increase on Cygwin and a small
performance increase on Linux. If the built-in preprocessor does not work,
you can still use GCC to find dependencies with the --depfinder=gcc option.

by lemke (http://freshmeat.net/users/lemke/)
Fri, Oct 20th 2006 04:32
Software Development :: Code Generators
About: Dragon is a powerful parser generator. It produces a consequent,
object-oriented, integrated scanner and parser solution. It also scales
for very large grammar defintions. Since dragon parses LR(1) grammars, the
generation algorithm is quite CPU intensive. Using LR(1) instead of LALR
decreases efficiency of the parser, but avoids some reduce/reduce
conflicts in some cases. Dragon provides a very clean and structured way
for the integration of application specific context code. Dragon combines
the lexical and syntactical analysis and the corresponding code
generation.
Changes: Java code generation was added.

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: The "Faster Java Serialization" project aims to provide faster Java
serialization by inspecting classes and generating tailor made
serialization code on the fly. This serialization code is reused for every
object of the same class. Objects are serialized to a NIO ByteBuffer,
eliminating the need for numerous memory copies that take place during
normal serialization to files or network. Currently, there are some
limitations on the kinds of objects that can be serialized.

by Charles Cazabon (http://freshmeat.net/users/twoflower/)
Fri, Oct 20th 2006 21:54
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: getmail is intended as a simple, secure, and reliable replacement
for fetchmail. It retrieves email (either all messages, or only unread
messages) from one or more POP3, SPDS, or IMAP4 servers (with or without
SSL) for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into
qmail-style Maildirs, mboxrd files, or through external MDAs (command
deliveries) specified on a per-account basis. getmail also has excellent
support for domain (multidrop) mailboxes, including delivering messages to
different users or destinations based on the envelope recipient address.
Changes: A debug logging message that would show up in messages if --trace
was used and the message was passed through an external filter was
disabled. Additional sanity checks were added to ensure a recent-enough
version of Python is used, as Python 2.2 would throw an exception.

About: gscan2pdf is a GUI to ease the process of producing PDFs from
scanned documents. You scan in one or several pages and create a PDF of
selected pages. At maturity, the GUI will have similar features to that of
the Windows Imaging program, but with the express objective of writing a
PDF, including metadata. Scanning is handled with SANE via scanimage. PDF
conversion is done by libtiff. Perl is used for portability and ease of
programming, with gtk2-perl for the GUI.
Changes: A bug importing from temp was fixed. A bug in which no PDF file
was created if JPEG compression was selected was fixed. A FAQ and more
tooltips were added. Bugs with the interface for various scanners were
fixed. Right mouse button menus were added. All strings were wrapped in
gettext calls for internationalization. The "rounded br-" warnings from
scanimage are now ignored. The appearance of the HTML was improved. Spaces
in device-dependent options and strange characters in device names are now
tolerated. FileChooser is now used instead of the old FileSelection.

[042] - JChav 1.1.0
by Paul Goulbourn (http://freshmeat.net/users/goul/)
Fri, Oct 20th 2006 10:38
Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Quality Assurance
Software Development :: Testing
About: JChav is a way to see the change in performance of your Web
application over time by running a benchmark test for each build you
produce. It is an Ant task that, when used in conjunction with the JMeter
ant task, produces historic views of the performance of your application.
Charts are produced for individaul pages of the application along with
summary data. If integrated with cruise-control or similar build tools,
you will get an idea if the changes you are making to your Web application
are improving or degrading performance.
Changes: The y-axis (response time) is now uniform across all charts by
default. This means when you look at the summary page you're comparing
like with like. This option can be controlled by the Ant option of
uniformyaxis="true|false". The max value for some tests was not set if the
first value in the results was both the min and max values. This showed up
as a chart with a huge y-axis scale. Minor chart changes: the thumbnail
graphs no longer show the (unreadable) x-axis labels, saving a bit of
screen space. A Maven 2 plugin has been contributed.

by Nuno Carvalho (http://freshmeat.net/users/nunomrc/)
Fri, Oct 20th 2006 08:05
About: The Group Communication Service (jGCS) intends to provide a generic
API for applications that need group communication primitives, such as
virtual synchrony or atomic broadcast. It is a Java based common API to
several toolkits such as Spread, Appia, and JGroups.
Changes: The main changes made to the jGCS packages are mainly in the
bindings, since the interface itself is stable. The Appia binding now
supports closed and open groups and can be configured to discover the
addresses of group members from an external process and send messages to
that group. The Spread version runs with Spread 4.0.0 and contains some

[070] - Rebound 0.9.1
by Joshua Gerth (http://freshmeat.net/users/hrakaroo/)
Fri, Oct 20th 2006 14:22
Games/Entertainment :: Real Time Strategy
About: Rebound is a reimplementation of the game called Diamonds which
existed for the Macintosh in the early 90s. It is a cross between a puzzle
and an action game. The game play requires the player to use the ball on
the screen to hit bricks and destroy them. However, rather than hitting
the ball with a paddle like breakout, the player controls the left and
right movement of the ball with the arrow keys. The ball still bounces up
and down on its own, but there is no bottom to fall off of.
Changes: All the images are finished/updated, and sound has been added.
The game has a total of seven playable levels and an intro screen to give
basic help. Minor enhancements include a countdown timer and the ability
to get an extra ball, and each level has its own background image. This
release includes a Win32 binary release.
