[001] - abcm2ps 5.2.1 (Development)
  by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
  Tue, Dec 12th 2006 02:34

Printing

About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.

Changes: This release adds a new %%tablature command and a '-i' command
line option. Some cases of "$n" in lyrics under the staff are handled. A
bug affecting '$0" in strings was fixed.

[002] - AIMLBot (Program#) 2.1
  by ntoll (http://freshmeat.net/users/ntoll/)
  Tue, Dec 12th 2006 07:31

About: AIMLBot (Program#) is a small, fast, standards-compliant yet easily
customizable .NET DLL implementation of an AIML (Artificial Intelligence
Markup Language) based chatter bot. It boasts cross-platform
compatibility, a modular architecture, a simple and logical API, standards
compliant AIML support with the option for extensions via custom tags, very
small size (currently only 52k), and very fast performance (over 30,000
categories processed in under a second).

Changes: Various small enhancements and bugfixes were applied after
feedback from the 2.0 release. An example Web-services based application
is also included for illustrative purposes.

[003] - appctl 1.10
  by Rainer Meier (http://freshmeat.net/users/skybeam/)
  Tue, Dec 12th 2006 02:39

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Software Distribution
Utilities

About: Appctl is a framework for virtually any server software. It
provides a central script called "ctl" which allows you to start, stop,
restart, maintain, or query the current status of an application. It is
meant as a completely generic replacement for application-specific
startup/stop scripts. The project also supplies generic monitoring scripts
for clusters, which can dramatically decrease clustering costs.

Changes: Minor functionality enhancements were made in this release. It
allows the use of pipes inside the ARGUMENTS parameter for a handler. This
allows the piping of STDOUT through programs like 'sed' or to an external
logging program.

[004] - Asymptote 1.19
  by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)
  Tue, Dec 12th 2006 23:26

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: Bezier surface (tensor patch) shading was implemented. The
cylinder function was standardized. The intersect routine now returns an
array of reals. The shipout unitsize arguments have been replaced with a
unitsize function. The seconds function works portably. A winding number
routine was added. Embedded PDF and external movies are supported.
Flowchart routines work with pictures as well as frames. Writing to other
directories requires -global. A final backslash continues a line on the
interactive prompt; a new multiline option facilitates cutting and pasting
code in interactive mode.

[014] - Cowloop 3.0
  by AT Consultancy (http://freshmeat.net/users/atconsultancy/)
  Tue, Dec 12th 2006 14:54

About: The cowloop-driver is a copy-on-write loop driver (block device)
which can be used on top of any other block driver. It shields the lower
driver from any write access. Instead, it diverts all write-accesses to an
arbitrary regular file, called the cowfile. When a modified block is read
again later on, the cowloop-driver obtains the block from the cowfile,
while non-modified blocks are obtained from the original read-only device.
This mechanism allows block-devices to be used in a read-write fashion
without modifying the underlying block-device itself.

Changes: The driver went through an extensive redesign and upgrade.
Several new management utilities were added, based on new driver IOCTLs.
An important bugfix cures the (sometimes occurring) 'Scheduling while
atomic' problem. Greatly improved manual pages were added.

  Tue, Dec 12th 2006 22:15

Desktop Environment

About: Damn Small Linux is a business-card size (50MB) Live CD Linux
distribution. Despite its minuscule size it strives to have a functional
and easy to use desktop.

Changes: The madwifi-ng modules were updated. BusyBox was updated with
support for files larger than 2GB. A new cron implementation was added,
with a new boot option "cron" and a toggle from the control panel. The
"checkfs" boot option was added. The MyDSL structure was simplified by
using the level 1 default auto-scanned /mydsl directory or a
user-specified level 1 directory which contains extensions. mkmydsl was
added, which is a simplified custom ISO maker that is even easier than
before and supports a new MyDSL layout and works for both isolinux and
syslinux CD versions. MyDSL was updated to support direct downloading.

  Tue, Dec 12th 2006 00:16

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Deep is a content management system that serves HTML, preformatted
text, Deep shorthand content, or the output of a Lua script using simple
templates and CSS. There are hooks to sell this content either by single
page or multi-page set through PayPal. You can use Deep to publish other
peoples' work, diverting a percentage of the payments to the publisher and
allowing the rest to go directly to the author. To promote fairness, the
server makes these percentages public. Deep is also a blog server, using
simple uploaded text files for entries and generating all indices on the
fly. It does not use a database and requires only a cgi-bin directory on a
Unix server.

Changes: Requests for resources not listed in a key file or set.key file
are now served the default page. This ensures that any working files
remain private.

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP

About: Fetch and deliver mail is a simple, lightweight replacement for
mail fetching, filtering, and delivery programs such as fetchmail and
procmail. It can fetch using POP3, POP3S, IMAP, IMAPS, or stdin, and
deliver to a pipe, file, maildir, mbox, or SMTP server, based on a set of
regexps. It can be used for both single user and multiuser setups, and is
designed with privilege separation when running as root.

Changes: Matching may be done based on various attributes of mail
attachments, and strings in the config file can now be single-quoted to
avoid having to escape special characters. SMTP delivery and multiple lock
types now work properly.

[035] - Hachoir core 0.7.0
  by Haypo (http://freshmeat.net/users/haypo/)
  Tue, Dec 12th 2006 10:26

Software Development :: Disassemblers
Utilities

About: Hachoir is a Python library used to represent a binary file as a
tree of Python objects. Each object has a type, a value, an address, etc.
The goal is to be able to know the meaning of each bit in a file. Hachoir
is able to open invalid or truncated files. It only reads or computes data
on demand to minimize load times. Many field types are predefined (integer,
bit, string, etc.) and strings with a given character set (such as
ISO-8859-1 or UTF-8) are supported. Addresses and sizes are stored in
bits.

Changes: The component "hachoir" has been renamed to "hachoir-core". The
editor supports Float32, Float64, and Character types. Floats are now
field set: it's possible to read sign, exponent, and mantissa. There is a
new EncodedFile type to parse "encoded" sub-files: compressed, encrypted,
encoded in base64, etc. There are new GenericVector and UserVector types
to parse vectors. Raw display is now closer to hexadecimal representation
for many types. The documentation has been rewritten. FileInputStream()
and FileOutputStream() now have optional "real_filename" arguments to
accept an invalid Unicode filename.

[059] - OMake 0.9.8
  by Aleksey Nogin (http://freshmeat.net/users/nogin/)
  Tue, Dec 12th 2006 07:37

Software Development :: Build Tools
System :: Shells

About: OMake is a build system with a similar style and syntax to GNU make
but with many additional features, including support for large projects
spanning multiple directories, default configuration files simplifying the
standard compilation tasks, support for commands that produce several
targets at once, fast, reliable, automated, scriptable dependency analysis
using MD5 digests, portability, and built-in functions that provide the
most common features of programs like grep, sed, and awk. It also provides
active filesystem monitoring that restarts builds automatically when source
files are modified. A companion command interpreter that can be used
interactively is included.

Changes: The conversion from OMake expressions to shell command lines went
through a major redesign in this release to make it more consistent and
less ad-hoc. OMake documentation was significantly reorganized. An
experimental improved OCaml dependency scanner using the upcoming
"ocamldep -modules" feature and support for the Menhir parser-generator
were added to the standard library. A number of new options to control
OMake's output and verbosity were added; OMake is now more silent by
default. There are many other improvements and bugfixes.

[062] - OpenPKG E1.0
  by Ralf S. Engelschall (http://freshmeat.net/users/rse/)
  Tue, Dec 12th 2006 01:41

About: OpenPKG is a flexible and powerful software packaging facility that
eases installation and administration of Unix software across several
platforms. Consolidating different vendor approaches into a unified
architecture, it assists in administration of large networks previously
complicated by nonconformant systems. It uses RPM to provide an additional
system layer on top of the operating system. It is fully self-contained (no
RPM pre-installation is required), installs itself by means of a tricky
bootstrapping procedure with minimal operating system intrusion, and
supports multiple installation instances.

Changes: This release provides fully backwards-compatible security updates
for third-party open source software based on back-ported security fixes.
All common hardware architectures are supported along with Unix
derivatives including FreeBSD, GNU/Linux, and Sun Solaris.

Office/Business :: Scheduling

About: TimeTrex is a complete Web-based payroll and time management suite

and attendance, check their own timesheet for missed punches, and respond
to flagged timesheet errors. Payroll administrators can quickly generate
paystubs and process payroll based off timesheet information or export
timesheet data to other applications.

Changes: This release adds support for PHP 5.2.0, hierarchical employee
groups, hierarchical employee permissions so supervisors can only
view/edit employees below themselves in the hierarchy, better list and
report filter capabilities, updated tax tables for 2007, and several
bugfixes.
