  Wed, Dec 13th 2006 10:56

Software Development
Software Development :: Build Tools

About: KJam is a very fast build tool. It is a make replacement, and uses
a syntax similar to Jam, but is much more powerful than the original. It
has built-in dependency scanning, per-target viewpathing, C-like control
flow, and a built-in sh-like shell. It is optimized for multi-processor
machines. It can accelerate software builds by launching build actions on
a distributed peer to peer network of build servers. It is designed to
support large projects with thousands of targets, or projects requiring
building on many target architectures.

Changes: Many new features have been added, including "timeout" and
"retry". These are designed to help build robust build systems even in
environments where your tools can crash or hang unexpectedly. If you have
an action that calls an unstable tool, you can instruct kjam to retry that
action several times before reporting an error. If you have a tool that is
prone to hangs, you can specify a timeout after which kjam will terminate
the presumably hung process. There are many other new features and
bugfixes as well.

[029] - LibMySequoia 0.9.6
  by Csaba Simon (http://freshmeat.net/users/secsaba/)
  Wed, Dec 13th 2006 20:45

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: LibMySequoia provides an alternative library for MySQL C client
library (libmysqlclient.so) to benefit from the Sequoia high availability
and performance scalability clustering solution. Native MySQL client
programs can use the Sequoia clustering solution without changing any line
of code in the application. The benefit of this solution is that native C
applications, PHP, Perl, and Python programs using the MySQL C API
interface now can transparently connect to a Sequoia cluster.

Changes: This release fixed issues where character sets were handled
incorrectly, mysql_stmt_store_result did not fill in the max_length field
when asked to, and compilation errors on the x86_64 platform. The default
for persistent connections is now off. A configure option for specifying
the MySQL headers directory was added along with configuration parameters
for the "controller_timeout" and the "ping_delay".

[034] - LON-CAPA 2.2.99.0 (Release Candidates)
  by Gerd Kortemeyer (http://freshmeat.net/users/korte/)
  Wed, Dec 13th 2006 10:51

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing

About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.

Changes: This is the first release candidate for version 2.3. Usernames
and host IDs can now contain "-" and ".". All changes to course parameters
and documents are logged and can be displayed. Users can now delete and
rename internal mail folders. Additional access control features for
portfolio files are available. Users can reset their own password if it is
maintained within LON-CAPA (rather than, for example, Kerberos). Storage
quota can be set on different levels.

[036] - Mantissa 7.0
  by luc (http://freshmeat.net/users/maisonobe/)
  Wed, Dec 13th 2006 20:46

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Mantissa is a collection of various mathematical algorithms in Java
aimed towards simulation. It features a small set of linear algebra
classes, a least squares estimator, some curve fitting classes, several
ordinary differential equation integrators (all supporting multiple
switching functions and dense output), vectors and rotations in a three
dimensional space, algebra-related classes like rational and double
polynomials, various orthogonal polynomials, some optimization algorithms
using direct search methods, and more.

Changes: For many basic objects provided by Mantissa like Vector3D,
Rotation, and the various Polynomial classes, instances are now guaranteed
to be immutable. This greatly simplifies safe sharing of instances without
forcing users to either put severe restrictions on their use of Mantissa
classes or make numerous copies just to make sure everything is safe.
Since the change is a semantic change on the contract of the classes, this
version introduces some incompatibilities with respect to previous ones.
Upgrading to this version is not difficult, though.

are dynamically populated, making them data-aware automatically at run
time with no need to code any database interaction. This framework allows
you to focus on Information System design, with forms and portal
architecture being generated automatically.

Changes: This release provides a new layout form, with multi-column,
automatic generation from a UML CRM model, and iReports integration for
PDF generation of leads.

  by Ben Crowell (http://freshmeat.net/users/bcrowell/)
  Wed, Dec 13th 2006 20:47

Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)

About: Spotter is software that can check students' answers to symbolic
and numerical problems in math and science. It recognizes an answer
regardless of the form it's in, and the instructor can put in helpful
hints as responses to frequently-occurring mistakes. Symbolic answers can
be input in a notation closely resembling normal human math notation
(e.g., xy rather than x*y, and sin x instead of sin(x)). Spotter runs as a
Perl CGI application on a Web server; the student doesn't need to install
any software.

Changes: As the student types an answer, the result is now parsed on the
fly and displayed using MathML.

About: TNV (The Network Visualizer or Time-based Network Visualizer)
depicts network traffic by visualizing packets and links between local and
remote hosts. It is intended for network traffic analysis to facilitate
learning what constitutes 'normal' activity on a network, investigating
packet details and security events, or for network troubleshooting. It can
open saved libpcap (from tcpdump, windump, ethereal, etc.) formatted files
or capture live packets on the wire, and export data in libpcap format or
save the data to a MySQL database to enable the examination of trends over
time.

[067] - wingS 2.1
  by Holger Engels (http://freshmeat.net/users/hengels/)
  Wed, Dec 13th 2006 10:37

Software Development

About: wingS is a servlet development framework for Web applications. It
features Swing-like components and utilizes Swing models, Swing events,
and a very similar API. A special LayoutManager allows you to place
components using designer provided HTML templates. The HTML code
generation of the components themself supports PLAF (Pluggable Look and
Feel), so it is possible to create a different output, like plain HTML,
HTML+CSS, and WML.

Changes: This is primarily a bugfix release, though several improvements
and new features are included as well. In order to make the transition
from wingS 2.1 to the first AJAX-ified version of wingS as smooth as
possible, some core concepts have been aligned with the refined
architecture from the AJAX branch already.
