Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Apache Cocoon is a Web development framework built around the
concepts of separation of concerns and component-based Web development.
Cocoon implements these concepts around the notion of "component
pipelines", each component on the pipeline specializing on a particular
operation. This makes it possible to use a Lego(tm)-like approach in
building Web solutions, hooking together components into pipelines without
any required programming.
Changes: This is another maintenance release. It contains several bugfixes
and a lot of minor enhancements and improvements.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: BFilter is a smart filtering HTTP proxy. Its primary purpose is
removing banner ads. Unlike the majority of similar tools, it doesn't rely
on a list of blocked URLs, but instead parses HTML on the fly, and detects
ads using a set of heuristic rules. BFilter has a built-in Javascript
engine that detects js-generated ads.
Changes: A possible deadlock, as well as several minor bugs, were fixed.
Ad detection accuracy was improved. The JavaScript engine was updated.

Fri, Dec 22nd 2006 10:14
Communications :: BBS
Communications :: Chat
Communications :: Email
About: Citadel is an advanced messaging and collaboration system for
groupware and BBS applications. Users can connect to Citadel using any
telnet, WWW, or client software. Among the features supported are public
and private message bases (rooms), electronic mail, real-time chat,
paging, shared calendaring, address books, mailing lists, and more. Unlike
other collaboration servers, Citadel provides its own data stores and is
therefore extremely easy to install; you don't have to "bring your own"
email and database because they're built in. The server is multithreaded
and scalable. In addition, SMTP, IMAP, and POP3 servers are built-in for
easy connection to Internet mail. Citadel is both robust and mature; it
has been in production since 1987.
Changes: This release adds a powerful, flexible subsystem for server-side
sorting and filtering of incoming mail. Each user can build a set of rules
using an easy point-and-click interface, and advanced users can enter
scripts using the Sieve language.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers
About: GeoTools is a GIS toolkit that is used for OGC-based projects via
GeoAPI interfaces. It includes two great SLD based renderers and tools for
raster access and reprojection as well as plugins for Shapefile, ArcGrid,
ArcSDE, Postgis, OracleSpatial, MySQL, and many more.
Changes: The main focus of this release is improving raster support. While
plug-ins for a variety of rasters existed previously, all of them were
memory constrained and not really suitable for real software. This release
brings very solid, scalable, fast support for ArcGrid, GeoTiff, GTOPO30,
World Images and Image Mosaics and Pyramids. There is also support for the
Filter 1.1 spec, a much more complete IP provenance review, better support
for older PostGIS versions, and more visibility for plug-ins. There are
many other small bugfixes and improvements.

[020] - GNU CD Input and Control Library 0.01 (rbcdio)
by R. Bernstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/rocky/)
Fri, Dec 22nd 2006 19:15
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio
Multimedia :: Video
Software Development :: Libraries
About: The GNU Compact Disc Input and Control library encapsulates CD-ROM
reading and control for applications wishing to be oblivious to the OS-
and device-dependent properties of a CD-ROM. It provides an API for access
to SCSI-MMC (multimedia commands) and support for CD image types like
BIN/CUE, cdrdao's TOC, and Nero's NRG, which gives applications using the
library the ability to read disc images as though they were CDs. ISO-9660
filesystem support is included, as are utility programs for displaying CD
and CD-ROM drive information, reading the blocks of a CD, and extracting
files from an ISO-9660 filesytem image. cdparanoia is also included.
Changes: This package contains cdio and iso9660 libraries to about the
same level of completion as the Python (pycdio) and Perl (Device::Cdio)
libraries. Example programs include getting a listing of the tracks of a
CD or CD image, extracting a file from an ISO9660 image, and showing
CD/DVD ROM devices attached and the Hardware Model/Revison information for
each. The package has been tested on GNU/Linux, Cygwin, and Solaris. (a bit
of linking wizardry is needed to figure out how to link on OS X.)

[021] - GNU Gatekeeper 2.2.5
by Jan Willamowius (http://freshmeat.net/users/willamowius/)
Fri, Dec 22nd 2006 01:45
Communications :: Telephony
System :: Networking
About: The GNU Gatekeeper is a free H.323 gatekeeper based on the OpenH323
project. You can use it to manage a Voice-over-IP network and let endpoints
(e.g., Netmeeting) communicate through symbolic names. It also has an
external interface for billing and other applications. It runs on a number
of Unix versions (including Linux and Solaris) and Windows.
Changes: This release fixes some issues larger installations had with call
failover and should generally improve stability. Some of the new features
in this release are virtual queue support for LRQs, support for
canMapAlias for LRQs, syslog accounting module on Unix, status port
filtering (suppress not needed messages), improved H.235 support, a new
DNS SRV routing policy, improved support for NAT detection and handling,
support for working with unknown neighbor gatekeepers, and the addition of
registration priorities.

by Christian Grothoff (http://freshmeat.net/users/grothoff/)
Fri, Dec 22nd 2006 19:22
Communications :: File Sharing
Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: GNUnet is a peer-to-peer framework with focus on providing
security. All peer-to-peer messages in the network are confidential and
authenticated. The framework provides a transport abstraction layer and
can currently encapsulate the network traffic in UDP (IPv4 and IPv6), TCP
(IPv4 and IPv6), HTTP, or SMTP messages. GNUnet supports accounting to
provide contributing nodes with better service. The primary service build
on top of the framework is anonymous file sharing.
Changes: Most of the changes focus on improving internal APIs. Users
should expect to see noticeable improvements in stability and performance.
as well as minor visual and functional improvements. In particular, files
from stopped downloads are deleted, error messages can now be communicated
from gnunetd to clients, and the new Guile-based gnunet-setup allows
scripting of interdependencies between options. The performance of various
operations was improved. GNUnet should work better on OS X, BSD, and
Solaris. This release also fixes a huge number of minor bugs.

[026] - Herrie 1.1
by Ed Schouten (http://freshmeat.net/users/EdSchouten/)
Fri, Dec 22nd 2006 09:49
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
About: Herrie is a command line music player. It has a split-screen file
manager and playlist interface and supports a number of file formats (MP3,
Ogg Vorbis, wave, FLAC, etc). It also has some nice features, including a
chroot() function for untrusted setups (remote logins, parties, etc).
AudioScrobbler is also implemented using Curl.
Changes: This release is mainly focused on source code cleanup. There are
a lot of fixes and new features. The file browser and playlist now contain
a percentage at the top right indicating their vertical progress (like
Mutt). Herrie can now be controlled with SIGUSR1 and SIGUSR2 to pause/skip

[027] - Infon Battle Arena 139
by Florian Wesch (http://freshmeat.net/users/dividuum/)
Fri, Dec 22nd 2006 03:33
Games/Entertainment :: Real Time Strategy
Games/Entertainment :: Simulation
About: Infon Battle Arena is a networked multiplayer real-time programming
game featuring little creatures fighting for food. You upload your Creature
Code (written in Lua) to a game server using a telnet Interface. The game
server then runs your code. The graphical client can be used to watch
running games or replay recorded games.
Changes: This release adds a new rendering architecture that allows
different output plugins for the client. The server can now load
precompiled code and offers new commands for both users and
administrators. It also offers a competition mode that allows automated
fights between bots.

[028] - Instant-Grid 0.6
by Christian Boehme (http://freshmeat.net/users/cboehme/)
Fri, Dec 22nd 2006 10:31
Software Development :: Testing
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Instant-Grid is a Knoppix-based live-CD bundled with a
pre-configured grid environment based on the Globus Toolkit. One PC
started from this CD becomes the Instant-Grid frontend. It also functions
as a PXE boot-server, allowing other PCs in the same local network to boot
the Instant-Grid environment. Together with the frontend, these PCs
automatically form a working test grid. Like with the original Knoppix,
the existing configuration of the participating PC is not touched (except
maybe for enabling the PXE boot-option), and remains instantly available
by a simple reboot.
Changes: This version supports parallel rendering of animations or movies
with POV-Ray. Gridsearch allows searching text documents on all grid
clients, and with the Workflow Manager you can describe complex grid jobs
in an easy way. Kernel space has been replaced with user space NFS for
enhanced stability, and a bug that caused frontends with Firewire
interfaces to behave erratically has been fixed.

[044] - OpenL2TP 0.15
by James Chapman (http://freshmeat.net/users/katalix/)
Fri, Dec 22nd 2006 18:10
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
About: OpenL2TP is an L2TP client/server written specifically for Linux.
It has been designed for use as an enterprise L2TP VPN server or for use
in commercial, Linux-based, embedded networking products. It consists of a
daemon, openl2tpd, which handles the L2TP control protocol exchanges for
all tunnels and sessions, a plugin for pppd to allow its PPP connections
to run over L2TP sessions, a Linux kernel driver for efficient datapath,
and a command line application for management.
Changes: This release fixes bugs in persistent tunnel handling. Previous
versions had problems with recreating sessions in persistent tunnels when
connected to a Microsoft XP L2TP server. It also fixes tunnel reference
count issues when using persistent tunnels, which could leave stale tunnel
pointers around, which might have lead to an openl2tpd program exception.
Such failures could be induced by deleting a persistent tunnel while it
was in certain states. There were also problems deleting persistent
tunnels if they had made one or more reconnect attempts. These are also
fixed.

[059] - TNV 0.3.5
by jgood (http://freshmeat.net/users/jgood/)
Fri, Dec 22nd 2006 14:54
Internet :: Log Analysis
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: TNV (The Network Visualizer or Time-based Network Visualizer)
depicts network traffic by visualizing packets and links between local and
remote hosts. It is intended for network traffic analysis to facilitate
learning what constitutes 'normal' activity on a network, investigating
packet details and security events, or for network troubleshooting. It can
open saved libpcap (from tcpdump, windump, ethereal, etc.) formatted files
or capture live packets on the wire, and export data in libpcap format or
save the data to a MySQL database to enable the examination of trends over
time.
Changes: This release adds host sort functions based on arrival time or
IP.

[060] - Veejay 0.9.9
by Niels Elburg (http://freshmeat.net/users/nelburg/)
Fri, Dec 22nd 2006 13:13
Multimedia
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Video
About: Veejay is a visual instrument and real-time video sampler. It
allows you to "play" the video like you would play a piano. While playing,
you can record the resulting video directly to disk (video sampling).
Veejay can be operated live by using the keyboard (which is completely
user definable) or remotely over TCP/IP. Veejay can be used to manipulate
video in a realtime environment such as visual performances or for
(automated) interactive video installations.
Changes: The GVeejayReloaded interface has a brand new preview renderer
that is more stable and efficient. Also, it includes a grid where you can
compose a sample sequence. Last but not least, it includes a simple SRT
editor to subtitle video. The Veejay server now uses threading to capture
from video devices and/or the network. It uses a real-time and lossless
(de)compressor for network streaming, preview rendering, and direct to
disk recording. An OSD bar that displays timecode and the current playing
sample was added, together with four new effects.

[063] - XMLSysInfo 0.98.28
by Moritz Grimm (http://freshmeat.net/users/mgrimm/)
Fri, Dec 22nd 2006 18:09
System :: Diagnostics
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: XSI is an easy-to-use, secure, and comprehensive system monitoring
daemon that replies to network queries with XML-encoded system information
and statistics. This data can then be analyzed, graphed, or otherwise
presented by a front-end.
Changes: This release comes with complete documentation of the XML output
in hyperlinked XHTML, describing all possible elements and attributes.
While the documentation was written, several small but important issues,
bugs, and inconsistencies were found and fixed. The result is the largest
changelog between releases so far, and a much better XMLSysInfo.
