Software Development :: Libraries
About: AqBanking is a modular and generic interface to online banking
tasks, financial file formats (import/export) and bank/country/currency
information. It provides frontends for Qt, KDE, GTK, and console.
AqBanking uses backend plugins to actually perform the online tasks. HBCI,

supported. AqBanking is used by GnuCash, KMyMoney,and QBankManager.
Changes: AqGeldKarte has been fixed and adapted to Libchipcard3, which is
now required instead of Libchipcard2. The QBanking frontend is now less
verbose. Qt should be found on Darwin. Some other minor bugs have been
fixed, and the bank data files for Germany have been updated.

[008] - BlockHosts 1.0.5
by Avinash Chopde (http://freshmeat.net/users/avinash1/)
Wed, Dec 27th 2006 17:16
System :: Networking
About: BlockHosts is a script to record how many times "sshd" or "proftpd"
is attacked. When a particular IP address exceeds a configured number of
failed login attempts, that IP address is added to /etc/hosts.allow, with
the deny option. A check is also made for stale entries in hosts.allow,
and these will then be deleted.
Changes: This release fixes the bug where the ignore-offset argument was
not being acted upon. It adds a new regular expression to catch more
instances of SSHD failures.

About: The d command runs a command in the background and redirects its
output to a file. The output file is annotated with start and end time,
the actual command used, cwd, host, etc. You can ask the d command to
extract the last command from the output file and run it again, you can
ask it to append to the file or not, and other goodies. It comes with

[031] - Open Administration for Schools 2.20
by Les Richardson (http://freshmeat.net/users/richl/)
Wed, Dec 27th 2006 22:53
Education
About: Open Administration for Schools (OAfS) is a Web-based school
administration package. Open Admin does demographics, attendance,
discipline, report cards, and has an online gradebook and parent viewing
function. It is designed for elementary, K-12, and small high schools. It
generates plain HTML and uses LaTeX for PDF generation. It also includes
special education and division-wide central office modules (all schools
run on the same server with different virtual sites; two sites per school,
one for teachers, and one for the office). Parent functions are by separate
parent/school site.
Changes: A new Transporation System was added to provide more
comprehensive information about student transport to and from school,
including attendance information in bus supervisor PDF reporting.
Scripting was added to improve automation with provincial authorities via
improved XML query functions.

Security
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
System :: Systems Administration
About: The Openwall Linux kernel patch is a collection of security
"hardening" features for the Linux kernel. In addition to the new
features, some versions of the patch contain various security fixes. The
"hardening" features of the patch, while not a complete method of
protection, provide an extra layer of security against the easier ways to
exploit certain classes of vulnerabilities and/or reduce the impact of
those vulnerabilities. The patch can also add a little bit more privacy to
the system by restricting access to parts of /proc so that users may not
see what others are doing.
Changes: This release was updated to Linux 2.4.34. Minor documentation
updates have been made.

Database :: Front-Ends
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: PM Report is a PHP/MySQL report generator. It creates customizable
reports and is very simple to setup and use. You can select which
database, table, and individual fields to use on your report. You can also
select the order in which the fields should appear on the report, the field
you would like to group by, the field you would like to sort by, and
whether or not you would like a total for each column. Once the report has
been generated, you can highlight individual rows and export the results to
CSV.
Changes: Report generation and saved reports now work using POST variables
instead of GET variables, so longer tables no longer cause errors.

[038] - rdup 0.3.5
by Miek Gieben (http://freshmeat.net/users/miek/)
Wed, Dec 27th 2006 23:54
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: rdup is a utility inspired by rsync and the Plan9 way of doing
backups. rdup itself does not backup anything; it only prints a list of
the names of files that have changed since the last backup. It also
handles files that are removed, allowing for correct incremental backups.
Auxilary scripts are needed to act on this list and implement the backup
strategy. This way rdup can be kept lean and mean.
Changes: An exclude option was added and rdup-restore was refactored.

Wed, Dec 27th 2006 23:13
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
System :: Monitoring
About: StreamCruncher is an Event Processor. It supports a language based
on SQL which allows you to define "Event Processing" constructs like
Sliding Windows, Time Based Windows, Partitions, and Aggregates. Such
constructs allow for the specification of boundaries (some are time
sensitive) on a Stream of Events that SQL does not provide. Queries can be
written using this language, which in turn can be used to monitor streams
of incoming events. It also provides a feature similar to materialized
views. Joins and sub-queries are also supported to allow event
co-relation. A database is used underneath to do the heavy lifting.
Changes: The highest/lowest window construct was enhanced with an "update
group" clause. More real-world examples including ReStockAlertTest,
SLAAlertTest, TopSellingItemsTest, and ShipmentAggregatorTest were added
to the test cases.

[046] - Tapestry JSCookMenu 2.20
by perseios (http://freshmeat.net/users/perseios/)
Wed, Dec 27th 2006 05:03
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: Tapestry JSCookMenu provides a component for the Apache Tapestry
Web framework that makes it possible to create JavaScript menus and
navigation sidebars easily with an arbitrary number of hierarchical pop up
sub menus. The famous JavaScript "JSCookMenu", written by Heng Yuan, is
encapsulated within the component. The component gives an easy
Tapestry-like programming interface to the Web developer. There are some
built-in themes for the look of the menu. There is a WYSIWYG tool
available to create sophisticated themes within minutes.
Changes: JavaScript links (javascript:...) didn't work because of
timestamp decoration this has been fixed. An item to demonstrate a
JavaScript link has been added in the XML-model example. The section about
JavaScript links was changed in the manual. Nesting in span-tags is not
necessary to make them render. The horizontal separator for submenus in
Themes Office and SmartGreen was broken.

About: Frink is a calculating tool and programming language designed to
help you in the real world. It tracks units of measurement throughout all
calculations and ensures that answers are correct. It converts between
systems of measurement and has a huge library of physical data. It handles
conversions between time zones, currencies, and historical values of the
U.S. dollar and the British pound, translates between several languages,
does date/time math, and more.
Changes: A "Save History" menu item was added to the AWT GUI. This allows
you to save your calculations to a text file so they can be later
incorporated into a program, or edited and run later as a program. In
addition, warnings were added to the "What's New" page about how (all)
Java applications will produce incorrect Daylight Saving Time conversions
for the United States in 2007 and beyond unless the Java Virtual Machine
is updated. This is due to new rules for Daylight Saving that will take
effect in 2007.

[050] - VMware 6 Beta Build 36983 (Workstation Development)
by Moritz Barsnick (http://freshmeat.net/users/barsnick/)
Wed, Dec 27th 2006 10:19
About: VMware allows you to run 'virtual machines' inside a Linux host. It
is not an emulator. It provides a virtual computer within the host which
can boot whichever OS you decide to put on the filesystem image that is
used as a harddrive. It will run DOS 6.22, Win 3.1, Win9x,
WinNT/2000/XP/2003, Linux, Novell, and more. The only main requirement is
a 400 MHz or better machine, along with lots of RAM (128M minimum, 256M
recommended).
Changes: Support for several operating systems, most notably Windows Vista
and Solaris 10, was added. 64-bit guest support was improved. Support for
multiple monitors, also for those not physically available on the host,
was added. Integrated virtual debuggers for Visual Studio and Eclipse were
added. Virtual machines can now run in the background, detached from the
screen, as in VMware Server. They can also act as VNC servers without
special software on the host or guest. Copy and Paste buffer support and
Drag and Drop functionality were enhanced. High-Speed USB (2.0) devices
are now supported.
