by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering
About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: Explicit yaxis label angles were fixed. Loading and including
diagnostics under the -vv option were improved. The Emacs asy-mode now
respects TeX-electric-sub-and-superscript. The texpath configuration
variable and diagnostics were fixed under MSWindows. Low-resolution
palettes now display correctly. A routine to fill cyclic contours was
added, along with the example fillcontour.asy. A command-line option to
change the current working directory was added. The FAQ was updated.

System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: Bacula is a set of programs that allow you to manage the backup,
recovery, and verification of computer data across a network of different
computers. It is based on a client/server architecture and is efficient
and relatively easy to use, while offering many advanced storage
management features that make it easy to find and recover lost or damaged
files.
Changes: dbcheck has been converted to use 64-bit DB IDs. Autolabeling has
been fixed so that it will not mark a volume in error if the volume was not
actually opened. A few more ACL access checks have been added. The volume
migration error message has been clarified.

by hmahon (http://freshmeat.net/users/hmahon/)
Fri, Dec 29th 2006 23:24
About: cutview detects changes in the contents of the current selection or
cutbuffer0 and stores them in a buffer, which also displays the contents on
the screen. The user can edit or print the contents of a buffer from a
menu. The contents of a buffer can also be locked so that the contents
persist across X sessions. cutview mirrors cutbuffer0 to the selection,
and vice-versa, enabling some tools which don't use selections, e.g., VNC
to work.
Changes: The program will now work with GNOME. Pull-down menus are now
used instead of pop-up menus.

About: Dbblast (Dust bunny blaster) is a utility that automatically
removes dust spots or "bunnies" from JPEG images taken with digital SLRs.
It can be run in batch mode from either a GUI or from the command line. It
supports user configurable blasting threshholds and JPEG image save
quality. All EXIF data is kept in the output JPEG images.
Changes: The exiv2 library is used to save EXIF metadata in the output
JPEG files. The 4.2.2 .pro files were changed so that they create
makefiles on both Linux and Windows. The Fileopen and Filesave dialogs now
remember the most recently opened directory. The marker circle can be moved
with the mouse and resized with the mouse wheel. The -v switch was added to
the command line version. A Windows binary package was added. Command line
parsing was changed.

About: froofyJIT is a C++ 'syntactic sugar' front-end for Paolo Bonzini's
GNU lightning library for dynamic native code generation. It uses C++'s
powerful language facilities to allow GNU lightning instructions to be
expressed in a more concise way that approximates a 'real' assembly
language.
Changes: This release includes froofyQua, a preliminary implementation of
Henry Massalin's "quajects". Also, on the x86, this release causes the C
compiler to generate less code to assemble arithmetic instructions that
contain immediate operands not known at compile time.

About: The GMP compiler simplifies the use of GMP, the GNU multiple
precision library. It scans a C source file for specially marked GMPS
arithmetic expressions and replaces them with plain C.
Changes: This release adds support for C-like compound assignments, and
increment and decrement operators. Code generated by gmpc should be easier
to read, as temporary variables and constants are now logically grouped
together. An assignment precedence bug has been fixed, and doxygen
comments and a doxygen configuration file have been added.

Fri, Dec 29th 2006 00:06
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.
About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 19, which contains 7,293 foods and
140 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals, fats,
calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the essential
polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are expressed
as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of food labeling
in the United States, but also can be fully customized. Foods can be added
from recipes or food labels, and nutrient intake can be graphed. The
program is completely menu-driven and there are no commands to learn.
Changes: This release fixes some minor bugs, including the correction of
the kilojoule value when changing kilocalories for a labeled food. A new
feature is that the meal date can now be entered as a positive or negative
offset from today, such as "-3" or "+1".

timers to avoid Zaptel timing dependencies, greater speed, and more
efficient dialplan execution.
Changes: This release drops Editline support and introduces GNU Readline
as a replacement. app_conference was removed and NConference, a new
feature-rich application, replaces it. A new version of generic timers
providing better performance is now in the core to support FreeBSD 6.2,

[032] - phpMyRecipes 1.2.0
by Todd Palino (http://freshmeat.net/users/toddpalino/)
Fri, Dec 29th 2006 23:10
Home Automation
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: phpMyRecipes is a simple Web-based application for storing and
retrieving recipes. It implements security to allow recipes to be searched
and viewed by anyone, but all functions involving changes require
additional privileges to be granted by the administrator. Recipes are
categorized, and new categories are easy to create. Ingredients are added
to the database on-the-fly as they are used in recipes. Unit types (such
as "cup" or "teaspoon") are also stored in the database, and unit
"plurals" are also handled correctly. A robust search feature that
supports a wide range of criteria, including words found (or not found) in
the instructions, the recipe name, category, and ingredients list is
included.
Changes: The ability to email recipes was added (with a privilege for it).
Uploaded recipe images were added along with printable versions of recipes
and categories in the search page. Miscellaneous functions were separated
out from the config and look and feel.

[033] - Plash 1.17
by mseaborn (http://freshmeat.net/users/mseaborn/)
Fri, Dec 29th 2006 07:10
Security
System :: Filesystems
System :: Operating System
About: Plash is a sandbox for running GNU/Linux programs with minimum
privileges. It is suitable for running both command line and GUI programs.
It can dynamically grant Gtk-based GUI applications access rights to
individual files that you want to open or edit. This happens transparently
through the Open/Save file chooser dialog box, by replacing
GtkFileChooserDialog. Plash virtualizes the file namespace and provides
per-process/per-sandbox namespaces. It can grant processes read-only or
read-write access to specific files and directories, mapped at any point
in the filesystem namespace. It does not require modifications to the
Linux kernel.
Changes: This release adds Python bindings for Plash's object interface,
layered/copy-on-write directories, an update to build glibc 2.3.6, 2.4,
and 2.5 (previously only 2.3.5), security fixes to disallow setting
setuid/setgid bits and to fix the -t option in pola-run, a -e option for
pola-run, and packaging improvements to build packages for three Debian
variants. pola-run now looks up executables in PATH.

[034] - Python Integrated Development Application 0.4.2
by Ali Afshar (http://freshmeat.net/users/aafshar/)
Fri, Dec 29th 2006 07:07
About: Python Integrated Development Application (Pida) is an IDE based
around the idea of reusing existing tools, rather than attempting to write
a set of development tools of its own. It uses Vim as the editor, either
with its traditional user interface or with a user interface that
resembles more common text editors.

[035] - Query Object Framework 0.7.2
by Neil Williams (http://freshmeat.net/users/codehelp/)
Fri, Dec 29th 2006 07:28
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Information Management
Office/Business :: Financial :: Accounting
About: QOF (Query Object Framework), provides a set of C Language
utilities for performing generic structured complex queries on a set of
data held by a set of C/C++ objects. This framework is unique in that it
does not require SQL or any database at all to perform the query. Thus, it
allows programmers to add query support to their applications without
having to hook into an SQL database.
Changes: This release adds KVP_TYPE_BOOLEAN support, extensible error
handling, and new Brazilian Portuguese and Indonesian translations. It
fixes doxygen support (so that it can be disabled cleanly) and a sqlite
error that resulted in spurious temporary files. It improves speed in the
sqlite backend, packages the .pot file directly, and removes
AM_MAINTAINER_MODE. QofError is designed for user-friendly messages and
supports setting errors and error messages on-the-fly to provide user
error messages that are as detailed, relevant, and helpful as possible.

[044] - The Hacker Key Guide 4
by Chris Allegretta (http://freshmeat.net/users/astyanax/)
Fri, Dec 29th 2006 04:34
About: The Hacker Key Guide allows hackers, both current and aspiring, to
encode vital information about their traits into a single line of text,
generally useful for sig files. It is based in principle on the wonderful
Geek Code by Robert Hayden, but is skewed further to the geek programming
niche.
Changes: Category additions include "Cygwin" for Windows, "MMO" and "RTS"
to games, and several new additions to the books section. Answers 2 and 3
in math were changed for those hackers still in secondary school. The
Linux section was completely revamped and updated, and the user-specified
(O)ther option was added to Linux and IDE/text editors. The politics
section now uses the Political Compass website ratings.

[045] - Ultimate++ 612-dev3 (Development)
by Daniel Kos (http://freshmeat.net/users/unodgs/)
Fri, Dec 29th 2006 04:50
Software Development
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Debuggers
About: Ultimate++ is a cross-platform C++ rapid application development
suite. It includes set of libraries (for things like GUI and SQL) and an
integrated development environment. Rapid development is achieved by smart
and aggressive use of C++ rather than through fancy code generators. In
this respect, U++ competes with popular scripting languages while
preserving C/C++ runtime characteristics. Its integrated development
environment, TheIDE, introduces modular conception to C++ programming, and
can be used to develop non-U++ applications.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: User Interfaces
About: ViewKlass is a C++ framework for developing applications that use
the LessTif or OSF/Motif(tm) user interface toolkits. In particular it
provides classes that support the creation of reusable components. It
also provides classes that encapsulate some of the more difficult and
tedious aspects of Motif development. These include classes to handle
the creation of windows, dialogs, and menus. ViewKlass is an open source
implementation of SGI's ViewKit(tm), and should eventually become source
code compatible with a large subset of of that API.
Changes: This release includes fixes to build with the MKS Toolkit
compiler, gcc4.x, and x86_64. A memory leak in VkCheckBox was fixed. Fixes
for a modality problem with VkDialogManager and removing items from a
VkPrefGroup are also included.

by Wyrm Tools (http://freshmeat.net/users/wyrmtools/)
Fri, Dec 29th 2006 23:13
Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
About: Wyrm Tools is a suite of tools for any RPG system. The core
functionality of the platform includes a robust asset management system
and a character generator/editor. Users can use it to create their own
game systems, tools, data formats, etc.
Changes: Although about half of the new code in this release is related to
architectural improvements, several new features were added to the d20 game
system. Most notably, all skills now have their full SRD description
(including all tables), which is displayed in the Summary view when a
skill is selected in any other window. Minimum ability score prerequisites
were added to all feats and are enforced in the character editor. Finally,
the feat prerequisites which were added in the previous release are now
editable in the feat editor without having to manipulate any scripts.
