[001] - Absolute OS 11.0.6
by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
Wed, Jan 3rd 2007 22:46
About: Absolute OS is a fast Slackware derivative Linux distribution that
uses a Icewm and ROX-Filer window/file manager combination. It comes with
Firefox, The GIMP, MPlayer, K3B, Azureus, Gaim, Frostwire, Gftp, StarDict,
and many other titles all set up and ready to run. Several utilities are
included to ease configuration and management. It is compatible with all
Slackware 11 packages and can be installed just like a Slackware disk,
except that any choice of packages is removed, as it just installs
everything.
Changes: The Filefinder was fixed. XMMS was replaced with Audacious and CD
audio playing now supports direct sound (no cable) by default. An MPlayer
update includes support for ffmpeg conversions (memcoder) and it can now
play .flv (Flash movie) files standalone. Firefox 2.0.0.1 was included. An
email notification setup fix was made.

About: BBclone is a PHP Web counter on steroids which displays individual
logs as well as aggregated data. It is a clone of Big Brother webstats,
except that it is written in PHP and it relies only on flat files (no
database needed). BBclone enables any Web site administrator to have a
very precise view of who visit the website: OS, browser, date, referring
page etc. Main features include reload resistance, hostname resolution,
proxy workaround, and blacklist.
Changes: This release adds support for many robots, many browsers, and
some operating systems, most mobile browsers, some rare user agents like
the PSP, a favorite weekend mod from the forums (it colors the weekend
days differently), a regression suite to evaluate the correctness of
expressions (currently not linked; open show_regression.php to run it),
and color in detailed stats for access of the local IP address to spot
yourself in the log. The ip2ext database has been updated.

Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
About: Doodle is a desktop search engine for Linux. It searches your hard
drive for files using pattern matching on meta-data. It extracts
file-format specific meta-data using libextractor and builds a suffix tree
to index the files. The index can then be searched rapidly. It is similar
to locate, but can take advantage of information such as ID3 tags. It is
possible to do full-text indexing using the appropriate libextractor
plugins. It also supports using FAM to keep the database up-to-date.
Changes: This release fixes a bug on big-endian systems and an error in
handling empty metadata entries. It also adds support for pkg-config. The
database format changed; doodle indices will need to be regenerated.

About: File rename utils are powerful bash utilities that enable various
file renaming actions. These include upper and lowercase conversions and
renaming files numerically or by character substitutions. Other programs
include a KDE-compatible trash can, a swap utility, and renaming of HTML
file and directory pairs. Man page documentation is provided.
Changes: A very handy text utility, 'fromto', was written, which performs

Communications :: Telephony
Desktop Environment
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Speech
About: Julius is a high-performance large vocabulary continuous speech
recognition (LVCSR) engine for speech-related research and development.
You can construct your own speech recognition system, but you need a
separate English acoustic model and language model or grammar file.
Changes: Acoustic computation is now 20-40% faster. New grammar tools were
provided, including "slf2dfa", a toolkit for converting HTK slf to Julian
dfa. An option to load an HTK Config file to set correct acoustic
parameter configuration was provided. Acoustic parameter configuration can
be embedded into the header of a binary HMM file. Preliminary support for
live recognition using an acoustic model with energy normalization was
implemented.

by Jordi Sanfeliu (http://freshmeat.net/users/Mikaku/)
Wed, Jan 3rd 2007 05:10
System :: Monitoring
About: Monitorix is a lightweight monitoring tool designed to monitor as
many services as it can. At this time, it monitors from the CPU load and
temperatures to the users on the system. Network device activity, network
service demand, and even the devices' interrupt activity are also
monitored. It uses RRDtool as its logging and graphing back-end. The
current status of any corporate UNIX/Linux server with Monitorix installed
can be accessed via a Web browser.
Changes: With this new major release, Monitorix comes with a new graph
which shows the different system times spent under the terms: user, nice,
system, and I/O wait (the rest is for the idle time). Those statistic
values are collected directly from the /proc/stat file. The new graph
incorporates support for not only seeing those global values, but the
values for each processor in the system individually (up to 8 processors).

Wed, Jan 3rd 2007 00:02
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: NagiosAppender is a pure Java implementation of a Log4j appender
that allows the developer/administrator to send log records to Nagios via
the NCSA server (using the push model). It provides a simple solution for
developers/administrators whose only alternative is to implement a polling
function against against the output of a standard Log4j appender. The log4j
configuration file provides for user-specific mappings between Log4j levels
and Nagios levels. The configuration file also allows the user to select
whether to set the Nagios 'service' and 'host' programmatically via Log4j
MDC, or via the config file. Later releases support XOR encryption.
Changes: Encryption support for XOR was added. Support for layouts was
added. A functional test was added. The reference jar file provided was

by Michiel (http://freshmeat.net/users/michiel/)
Wed, Jan 3rd 2007 04:12
Communications :: Email :: Mailing List Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: phplist is a mailing list and newsletter manager that allows
posting via a Web page. It works well when used for announcements, and can
handle very large email address lists. Users can sign up to multiple lists,
but will only receive a single copy of cross-posted messages. When signing
up, users can identify their geographical location, and messages can be
targetted to these. You can add place holders in your email that will be
replaced with personal details (such as the person's name). Users can
update their own information, and unlike many other mailing list systems,
they can change their email address. HTML emails are supported.
Changes: This version has a major overhaul of the click track system to
avoid extremely large database tables, while still handling large amounts
of messages, users, and links. The plugin system has been updated to give
more power to plugins. Two new plugins have been added: a PGP plugin to
sign and encrypt messages and an email2fax plugin to allow sending HTML

by Patrick Frei (http://freshmeat.net/users/pfrei/)
Wed, Jan 3rd 2007 04:38
Internet :: Log Analysis
About: Webalizer Xtended is an extension of Webalizer which adds a number
of features and improvements, such as monthly statistics for all "404 Not
Found" errors, including the number of the "404 Not Found" requests and
the corresponding 404 URLs. Furthermore, all colors of the statistics can
be defined by the user. It also fixes several (security-related) bugs in
the original Webalizer code and contains the Geolizer patch to generate
faster and more reliable geographic statistics than the default DNS suffix
method.
Changes: An additional pie chart was added for all response codes. The
"nofollow" option was added to reduce referrer spam. Language files were
updated. The 404-error sorting-algorithm was modified. Some captions which
did not correspond with the human-readable transfer size captions were
fixed.

[066] - x 3.0
by Brett Smith (http://freshmeat.net/users/bretts/)
Wed, Jan 3rd 2007 05:07
About: x intelligently extracts many different archive types. It will get
the contents from tar, zip, rpm, deb, and cpio archives, as well as
compressed files, with one simple command. It helps keep your filesystem
sane by putting every archive's contents into a dedicated directory, and
making sure the owner can read and write whatever's extracted. It can even
recursively extract archives.
Changes: This is the first widely usable version. It has no known bugs and
basic documentation, but has enough features to be useful for daily work.

[070] - Zerotools 0.1
by Aleksandr Koltsoff (http://freshmeat.net/users/czr/)
Wed, Jan 3rd 2007 05:08
System :: Archiving :: Compression
System :: Systems Administration
About: Zerotools are a set of tools to aid keeping virtual disks clean by
filling binary zero to those regions which are no longer in "use". This is
done on-the-fly or manually, depending on which tool suits the needs best.
The tools do not compete with other programs that rewrite removed files in
order to make their restoration close to impossible. Zerotools are mostly
useful for people who compress or archive virtual machines constantly. The
tools are run inside the virtualized Linux system and are
distribution-agnostic.
